Last month we reported on a long-standing voluntary water restriction, (for those that weren t aware or dont visit the towns website) and in afollow up chat with town officials it seems that the town is taking steps towards alleviating the original issue. Up until recently, if the water levelin the towns system sinks below 6 feet deep, the pump doesnt have enough pressure to effectively push the flow of water towards the plantand on to you. They are currently working on installing a bypass pump on the raw water line that will allow the water to flow even in severedrought conditions. While it hasnt become a big problem yet, the town is doing what is needed to make sure it never becomes one. While thisrestriction is still effective, the hope to be done with the project and off the restriction in

the next month. We will report any change in future issues and you can read all the details

on the current restriction at www.townoframseur.org.

CCommunityLife At The WellA guest columnAt the center of the Village is a deep well of

life-giving water where the townspeoplemeet. As they draw water their voices blend inthe culture, society and wisdom that theyshare. Each month meet here at the well tohear those voices. Sometimes we will justnever know why things happen as they do.We are close here, in our community.Everybody knows everybody and sometimesheartbreak touches us all at once.

Sandy and Paul have a son, who was

born prematurely. Tim is three now. Sandy canhave no more children. Bo is the answer andhas become Tims four-legged brother. Bo isa Border Collie mix and has a black circlearound one eye. Bo came into their livesbefore Tim and slept under the empty crib as ifwaiting for his best friend. Since Tims birth Bohas stayed at his side. They are never apart.Like brothers the two play in the safety of thefenced back yard. Behind the yard is abeautiful wooded area. Today the imaginationruns away in play and centers around an oaktree that has fallen over the fence, propped onits limbs, not touching the fence. The leavesprovide the walls of the clubhouse as theyplay under the tree. Dad says he is going tocut up the tree and move it Tim tells Bo, wholistens intently, turning his head to one side, but Im glad its still here, Tim sees a smallred dog on the other side of the fencewatching them. Hey, you guys, come eat!

Mom calls, and the pair leave their fun andreluctantly go inside. Playing in the clubhousewas more fun than eating.

It is Saturday, so the family enjoyseating lunch together. I saw a red dog outsideour fence Tim tells his folks. You mean likeClifford, the big red cartoon dog? Tims Dadlaughs, thinking it was part of Tim simagination at play. No, a real dog Timinsists and this very important conversation is

lost in the shuffle of life, as the parentscontinue their own grown-up conversation. Back outside the red dog has foundits way over the fallen tree by climbing up theroots and walking across the trunk. The fence, even though the tree never touched it, did notkeep him out. Bo and Tim, always together, head back out to the clubhouse. Bo sees thered dog as it moves straight toward them andtears into it as it lunges for Tim. Teeth rip skin, and the fur flies while Tim screams. The red

dog gets away over the tree again and Bo is

bleeding, with his face and ears torn. The

screams bring the parents from the house andneighbors look over the fence. Tim sobsholding Bo and desperately tries to kiss himok again. Bo tries to wag that he is ok. Thered dog came over the tree they finally hearTim say. Paul races toward the woods, pickingup a stick to use as a club, for his ownprotection. Its a fox, he yells after a fewminutes. Its dead over here. Looks like Bogot the best of it he calls, not yet knowing itwas the other way around.

Why would a fox come out of thewoods, into the open, right in the middle of theday? Dad asks Animal Control, when he callsthem on the phone, trying to make sense ofthe situation. It is not usual for a fox toapproach humans, especially with a dogaround. It would never come that close to ahouse in a normal situation. Since thebehavior was abnormal, we should check thisfox for rabies. Do you still have the fox? they

ask. They instruct Paul that someone willcome immediately and pick up the fox fortesting. They also want to see Bo s rabies tag.Bo doesnt wear his tag. It is kept safely in afile with his certificate. Sandy will get theinformation and let them know the dates ofBos rabies protection. The officers take thefox, handling it with gloves and put it in a bag. They will call in 24 hours, with results of thetests.

Bo and Tim get baths to soothe the

wounds and wash the blood away. But thefear and trauma is not washing away. It istense and not normal around the house. If Ihad just cut that tree, Paul regrets That foxcould not have gotten into the fence. Sandyanswers, also regretfully, He told us at lunchthat he had seen it, why did we not go outthere ourselves and look for it?

A very long 24 hours later we learn

that the fox is rabid. This is bad news since inthe same 24 hours it is learned that Bo in factdid NOT have his rabies vaccine. It was ayear past due. Where does the time go?Paul mourned. Tim had held and kissed Bowhere the blood and saliva spewed from thefight. Animal Control Representatives advisethat, by law, Tim must begin the rabiesvaccine immediately. He gets 5 Immuneo-globulin shots along with his first rabies shot. One shot in each thigh, one shot in each arm,

one shot in each hip. Tim will need another

rabies shot each week, for six weeks. At least

the vaccine is not given in the stomachanymore, as it used to be.

Animal Control made one more visit, this time to take Bo. By law, Bo would have tobe put down. He was exposed to rabies andhis options were few. He sat in the cage of thetruck. This cant be happening Sandy says, crying softly as Tim sobs uncontrollably, in herarms, both of them wracked with grief. Timhas never lived without Bo to share his life. Bo

saved Tim from the fox. Doesn

t that count?Bo whines for Tim, not understanding hisconfinement in the cage, suffering from hisown wounds and needing to love Tim all-better; like he had all of Tims (and Bos) shortlife. How could I have let Bos rabies boosterbe forgotten? Paul says, tears streamingdown his cheeks as well. Bo will be takenaway and put to sleep. If the family wants thebody, they must pick it up for burial, otherwiseit is tossed into the landfill. Two of the

neighborhood men pick up Bos body, because the family is just too distraught andheartbroken. Several neighbors help to dig thegrave and then Bo is buried in the back yardat the spot where he shared the clubhousewith Tim.

We neighbors have carried food intothe lonely, empty house where Tim continuesto grieve for Bo. We have cried with them andshared their heartache. We have vowed never

again to allow such an avoidable loss of life tohappen in our community on our watch. Wesupport a rabies clinic two times a year righthere in our village to make it easy foreverybody to keep up with the time their petsare due for shots.

Bo won the fi ght with the fox and lostthe fight for his life. Now a permanentmemorial to Bo is built in their front yard, itsays, Save A Life, Keep your Rabies

Vaccines UP TO DATE Love, Bo.

    11/12

I realize most of our readers wouldnt know who DJ Jazzy

Jeff or The Fresh Prince are if they were break dancing on

your front lawn. But to those children of the 80s/90swho got my musical play on words, the title to that song

seems eerily ominous to what Im starting to realize is a

huge breakdown today. Dont know? Just watch the news.

Good Morning America recently revisited the 2007story of a father who went on a bank-robbing spree to get out of all thedebt he fell into trying to keep his family at a certain lifestyle.Inexplicably, the daughters called him their Robinhood - casting himas a hero doing what he had to do for his children. Add that to other

recent stories like the exasperated Mom who buckled her kids into thefamily vehicle and let them careen into the lake and drown. Or theWake County parents whose kid hit his head on a table but wasdiscarded conspicuously in his closet. Now, as a dad-in-training, it hasme wondering: is this what its like to be a parent?

Lord, please dont let me be that parent. I usually don t getstressed about much in life - but should I be preparing for a life ofexcruciating pain and a slow slide into insanity? No, this is where I getoff. I know many parents will tell me I dont know what Im talking aboutbecause Im not a dad yet, but I reject this lie of modern parenting. Inwhat world is materialism and popularity important enough to rob abank so your kids can have Abercrombie clothes? Why would we everlet our kids be bad enough to actually KILL them? Ive been reading abook called Baby Wise that suggests something so controversial, itsbeen banned in some stores. They suggest that (wait for it...) THECHILD SHOULDNT BE THE CENTER OF THE FAMILY. (gasp)

We wonder why our kids think they are the center of the worldwhen we taylor to their every whim, let them dictate what happens, and

refuse to set up consequences for

them. If you actually do these things, you are considered crude, old-school, even abusive. But to me,w h a t s m o r e a b u s i v e t h a nestablishing an existence centered inselfishness and no consequences:then letting them loose in the realworld for a rude awakening. All so theparent doesnt have to do the hard, yet loving things that need to bedone. My little girl will be here at theend of October, so its almost time toput my money where my mouth is.And like the song says, in her eyes Iprobably just dont understand - butfor once, I think I actually do.

Ive always thought one of the best things about the news media is the way it gets people fired up. Just letsomeone start spouting off some opinions and youre off to theraces! Even though this paper makes sure the coverage isobjective, we like to stir the pot on occasion with the aptly titledOPINION EDITORIAL. We always welcome your thoughts onanything that we print. One of the most common ways to give usfeedback is through our Facebook page. Any Facebook user cansearch for and Like the Ramseur Review page and get all sortsof updates and interaction. But, surfer be ware: any commentsmay be used in this section to highlight varying public opinions. With that being said; here is this months selected feedback:

What do you think? We want to know!

    Let your voice be heard!

(Ben) What Brian is referring to is Julys OpEd where I discussed the

source of Americas freedom. (If you missed it, its available online)My point wasnt to lament separation of church and state, but tosuggest that our founders realized that freedom came from a HigherBeing instead of a government. While this (ex) reader did exactly whatI want you to do - chime in - I hope that youll take a moretolerant...dare I say liberal approach to reading this paper. You wontalways agree with us, but that doesnt mean you cant read it anyway!
