The essays included in Encounters 1 range from considerations of identity and intention to technology and nature, from standardized systems of construction to phenomenological approaches to architecture. With references to anthropology, psychology, sociology and philosophy alongside examples drawn from literature, theater, music and the visual arts, Pallasmaa delineates an architectural landscape of active, deep, humanistic cultural engagement. Encounters 1 binds together a highly selective collection of essays, lectures, and articles in an edited, thematically comprehensive format. An equally careful selection of images accompanies the essays.

Encounters 2 – Architectural EssaysJuhani Pallasmaa

Edited by Peter MacKeith

“I see the fundamental task of architecture as the mediation between the world and ourselves, history, present and future, human institutions and individuals, and between the material and the spiritual. This is nothing short of a poetic calling ... Architecture can strengthen and maintain our grasp of the world and ourselves, and support humility and pride, curiosity and optimism.”

Juhani Pallasmaa

These essays are drawn from an intensive decade of teaching, lecturing and writing in the new millennium, as well as from a lifetime of critical observations on both architects and artists. New intellectual territories are explored, focusing on concepts of “vagueness” and “atmosphere.” Importantly, a series of artistic and architectural “portraits” are nested inside the thematic structure and amongst the more abstract contemplations. Portraits are drawn of prominent Finnish artists such as Kain Tapper, Juhana Blomstedt, Maaria Wirkkala, Jorma Hautala, and Raimo Utriainen and notable Finnish architects such as Alvar Aalto, Reima Pietilä, and the partnership of Mikko Heikkinen and Markku Komonen. These are all leavened by further commentaries on Steven Holl, Fred Sandback, and Rachel Whiteread – and the great Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala as well as the award-winning Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki.

the limits of architecture Between Fiction and Reality(2009)

architecture of the sPectacle

My focus here is on the boundaries and edges of architecture itself

as a cultural, mental, and artistic practice, rather than a survey of

geographical or socially paracentric developments in architecture.

Today architecture is often seen as a realm of individual freedom, a

practice without boundaries or phenomenal essences, and devoid of

inherent internal rules.

During the past three decades, we have experienced an unforeseen

era of architectural euphoria, omnipotence, hubris, and self-indulgence.

Novelty and uniqueness have been accepted as the sole criteria of archi-

tectural quality, and our art form seems to have become a global pursuit

of spectacular forms, images, and visual effects. As a consequence, the

art of building has adapted the psychological strategies of image and

persuasion deployed in commercial advertising. In The Society of the

Spectacle, Guy Debord defined spectacle as “capital accumulated to the

point where it becomes an image.”1 Hal Foster recently noted that with

Frank Gehry and other architects the reverse is now true as well: spec-

tacle is “an image accumulated to the point where it becomes capital.”2

Debord makes the thought provoking further comment: “All that once

was directly lived has become mere representation.”3 Architecture, too,

is descending from lived existential experience into aestheticized re-

presentation.

Today’s obsession with the unforeseen and unexpected has been

made possible by extraordinary accumulations of wealth, new techni-

cal inventions and materials, commercial strategies of branding, and in

particular, globalization and global mobility, both material and imma-

terial. The computer has decisively aided the generation and computing

Bijoy JainSpirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award 2012

“Projects are developed through careful consideration of place and a practice that engages intently in an environment and culture, the physical and emotional engagement of the people involved; where building techniques and materials draw from an ingenuity arising from limited resources.”

Bijoy Jain

Indian architect Bijoy Jain and his office Studio Mumbai Architects combine excellently traditional craftwork and architecture using meagre resources. The book presents Studio Mumbai’s workshop and five wooden residential buildings built in the tropical state of Maharashtra, on the coast of the Arabian Sea, and at a resort in the Himalayan Mountains. What all the buildings have in common is the combination of traditional work methods and the demands of modern life. Wooden beams obtained from demolished buildings get a new lease of life in the hands of skilled joiners. The treatment of materials and the beauty of the joints are stunning.

Bijoy Jain was born in Mumbai, India, in 1965 and received his M. Arch from Washington University in St Louis, USA, in 1990. He worked in Los Angeles and London between 1989 and 1995 and returned to India in 1995 to found his own practice.

Leti 360 resortLeti, Uttaranchal, India, 2007

Situated 2300 meters above sea level and nine kilometres from the nearest motorable road, the project is perched on a promontory at the foothills of the Indian Himalayas. The site is accessed along a narrow walking path carved into the mountainside, part of a network of trails used by local villagers for daily travel and transport. The trail culminates at the central living and dining structure built on a plateau, around which four guest dwellings are discreetly set into existing agricultural terraces.

The design was influenced by the inherent constraints of building in the region, concerns of environmental impact and cultural sensitivity, and careful observation of indigenous materials, climate, landscape and access to the site.

The project was constructed over a period of seven months with the help of more than 70 village masons, carpenters, and craftsmen. They leased out the land and provided the labour, but they did impose one important condition: the work schedule had to respect the cycle of the seasons and the customs that this has always dictated. The farmers/builders halted the works for the two months preceding the arrival of the monsoons (in June) and winter (in December) to shelter their animals and prepare their homes for the incessant rain and snow.

The project is a passive reworking of the landscape through gathering, moving and condensing native materials into cohesive but temporary structures that do not attempt to challenge the transformative effects of time. Thick dry-stacked stone walls provide weight and texture to each structure while glazed surfaces visually connect occupants with the surrounding landscape. Locally quarried stone and other building materials were proportioned and unitized and transported to site by porters and mules.

Illustrated Building Dictionary Finnish-English-FinnishErkki Jokiniemi and Nikolas Davies

The Illustrated Building Dictionary contains terminology used in architecture, construction history, styles and decorations, building technology, machinery and tools, materials and their treatment, urban and traffic planning, as well in transactions with authorities and the implementation of projects. The Dictionary contains the entire central vocabulary of the building sector explained and translated from English to Finnish and from Finnish to English; from words that are in daily use to more specialised terminology, from established concepts to professional slang. Precise plans, sections, facades and axonometric drawings, presented as line drawings, have been made specifically for the book, with the purpose of clarifying concepts that are difficult to describe only verbally. The pictures show building types, building materials, tools and equipment, urban and traffic planning concepts and historical styles as well as illustrate both traditional and contemporary building techniques.

Alvar Aalto – The Mark of the HandHarry Charrington and Vezio Nava, editors

This book reveals Alvar Aalto’s creative performance through a series of conversations with the members of his atelier spanning a period of fifty years from 1944 to 1994. Over sixty projects covering the full range of Aalto’s work are discussed, giving the reader a sense of Aalto’s work that goes far beyond the limited canon of buildings usually discussed in critiques of Aalto’s work. The conversations place these projects in their time, and among the people and milieu that wrought them, so we hear about the buildings not just as art historical artefacts, but also as part of a dynamic, and often contentious, environment, as well as how the atelier itself formed an integral part of Aalto’s achievement.

Vezio Nava is an architect who worked at the Alvar Aalto atelier from 1961–1984. He was involved in the detailed design of several projects including the Finlandia Hall, and he was the job architect for Riola Church in Italy.

Harry Charrington is an architect who worked at the Alvar Aalto atelier from 1985–87. He later completed his PhD at the LSE on Alvar Aalto’s social and artistic practice. He has written extensively about the Aalto atelier in journals and books.

“One of Aalto’s skills was to find good people to work with, sympathetic people who were on the same wavelength with him, who could work in the same spirit.”

“When we entered the Tiilimäki studio as new colleagues, we were immediately infected by the strong personality of the maestro. Gradually, hopelessly, we became, more or less, small Alvar Aaltos.”

“Aalto’s own character was equally human, admirable and fallible, he was kind, cunning, caring, cruel…”

´What this book on Alvar Aalto illuminates is not only the personalities, the office’s atmosphere, the working conditions (including union pay) or the era’s context against the backdrop of considerable numbers of works that have rarely been studied by Aalto historians, but, and I might say for the first time, it sheds light both on how a work of architecture is conceived (from sketches, even by employees – some of which are reproduced in the book – to working drawings always studied in models) as well as on the importance and sometimes decisive role of his partners and small staff in the results achieved, not to mention the great specialization of his artisans.´ Domus

The theme of the playing cards is Finnish design from the 1900s and early 2000s. The suits are divided as follows: spades: ceramics and glassware, hearts: furniture and lamps, diamonds: textiles, clothes and jewellery, clubs: equipment and tools. The kings, queens and jacks are designers and who are literally clothed in their own creations. The numbered cards depict design objects and the two jokers are persons who have had a significant influence in Finnish design.

Alvar Aalto Summer HomesErkki Helamaa, Jari Jetsonen

This book presents small, intimate and personal summer houses and saunas designed by Aalto – early works as well as later ones that have been published only rarely. Included are two summer homes that Aalto designed and built for himself: Villa Flora (designed together with Aino Aalto), from Aalto’s early production, and the world-famous Experimental House in Muuratsalo. The summer homes featured in the book were designed by Aalto for his relatives, close friends or clients for whom he already designed larger commissions. Villa Vekara, the Korpikoto Hunting Lodge, Villa Kihlman, the Enso-Gutzeit Country Club and Sauna, Villa Eino Manner and Villa Oksala were all individually designed and took into account the wishes of the client.

Alvar Aalto ApartmentsJari Jetsonen, Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen, Markku Lahti

The book presents ten apartment blocks and two student dormitories by Aalto built in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and the United States, from the 1920s to the end of the 1960s. Among them are Standard terrace housing in Kauttua, Finland, Baker House, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, USA, National Pensions Institute employee housing in Helsinki, Finland, Neue Vahr apartment building in Bremen, Germany and Schönbühl apartment building in Lucerne, Switzerland.
