CUA rch 2014 Walton Critic ELIANA BÓRMIDA Professor in Residence (September and October 2014) Sacred Space and Cultural Studies Concentration* Eliana Bórmida is one of the two principals of Bórmida & Yanzón Architects, an international, award-winning office operating from Mendoza, Argentina. Their portfolio contains remarkable projects related to nature, wine, lodging, agro-industrial architecture, and more. Balancing contemporary demands and consciousness with the values of local tradition, their buildings are beautiful, simple, tectonic, and sophisticated. It is an experiential architecture that defines a spatial narrative full of sensations and emotions that kindly invites our actions and always grounds us in local nature, culture, and history. Bórmida & Yanzón’s work has been covered in the international press (including the New York Times and the Financial Times) and recognized with many awards, including the 2012 Konex Award, the 2011 ParexKlaukol Prize, and several “Best of Wine Tourism” global awards for five years straight (2009 through 2013). Their oeuvre has been published in architecture journals, magazines and books such as SUMMA+, WALLPAPER, Revista D&D, and Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture. Bórmida was a professor at the Universidad de Mendoza for 30 years, teaching history of architecture and urbanism. She was named “Outstanding Woman” by the Mendoza Federation of Business Leaders in 2012 and “Notable Woman of Mendoza” in 2008. During her residence at CUA’s School of Architecture and Planning, she will direct a three-week-long design studio centered on the intersection between nature, everyday life, and spirituality. As the 2014 Walton Critic, she will participate in the life of the school through guest talks, reviews, and spontaneous meeting with students and faculty. Eliana Bórmida’s residence is made possible in part by the Clarence Walton Fund for Catholic Architecture. Past Walton Critics include architects Antoine Predock (2009), Craig Hartman (2010), Juhani Pallasmaa (2011), Alberto Campo Baeza (2012), and Claudio Silvestrin (2013). * The Sacred Space and Cultural Studies concentration is one of very few programs in the world in which architecture graduate students, faculty, and professionals can reflect upon, learn, research, and profess the deepest spiritual and cultural roots of place-making. We pursue this interest by engaging the inspiring conversations between the physical and the metaphysical, matter and spirit, life and intention, with the eyes of architecture.
