This fundraiser is being held to increase the amount given in grants and scholarships to high school seniors pursuing an art career. With the cost of a college education on the rise each year, we would like to have more to give.

30+ artists and crafts people will be turning wine barrels into art by the end of October. The art will be placed in wineries and tasting rooms through the month of November, where they will be available for sale by silent auction or purchased with a “buy it now” price. Any art

December 8th at the Chehalem Cultural Center from 4-6pm.

Your name will appear on all literature and signage for the event. Donations are tax deductible.

Wendy Goodwin Violinist, vocalist, composer and educatorWendy has distinguished herself as a versatile and creative presence

vocal stylings joining Classical, Jazz and Americana. Ms. Goodwin currently performs extensively with Windham Hill/Ark Music recording artists Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning. The trio’s 2010 Christmas album, Under the Wonder Sky has been featured on

Dunning and Goodwin are members of Coram Deo Ensemble, an international chamber group that concertizes in both the United States and Europe. Their 2011 release, Antiphon is a beautifully sublime mix of sacred, classical, ambient and Celtic inspired music.Wendy began violin lessons at age three, with supplemental training in piano and voice along the way. Her love and passion for music in its many forms extended throughout her education with diverse experiences ranging from the Portland Youth Philharmonic to the Mark O’Connor Fiddling Camp. Goodwin’s improvisational giftedness and training have freed her from the written line and she

His CD Beautiful Bones has garnered critical acclaim and achieved commercial success. Since its release it has remained in the top 3 of CDBaby’s Top Seller list for Orchestral Jazz. Recorded with a full

symphonic jazz orchestra, the record features Jack, fellow trombonists Bill Watrous, Jeff Uusitalo, Stan Bock, and Coro trombones de la Americas, as well as vocalist Shirley Nanette. Videos of the Beautiful Bones CD Release Concert have had over 100,000 viewings.

Jack teaches applied studies at George Fox University and coaches its low brass choir. Rod Stewart, Mannheim Steamroller, and Il Divo are among the acts for which Jack has served as orchestral contractor.

Water Tower After 5 years on the road, 4 albums under their belt and multiple international tours, Water Tower has been brewing up a storm in the folk music world.  They have toured extensively in both the USA and abroad, and performed live on the BBC, NPR, and RTE.  Based in Portland, Oregon these young gents got their start busking on street corners playing traditional old time and bluegrass, eventually honing their sound as a solid dance band playing square dances and bluegrass festivals up and down the west coast. Truckstop Darlin’ Truckstop Darlin’ comes out of the amazing music scene of the Great Northwest, more specifically, Portland, Oregon. Jeffrey Martin Writing about things he doesn’t understand helps Jeff Martin make sense of the world around him. The mystery of songwriting is what draws him to the craft, and it is this mystery that leaves the listener breathless and amazed at the remarkable character of this passionate artist. “I don’t sit down to write a song so much as I’m sat down by a song,” Martin will say. The Harmed Brothers Consisting of lead vocalists Ray Vietti on guitar and Alex Salcido on banjo, Alec La Roche on stand up bass and Ben Kilmer on drums, the band’s origins go back to teenagers playing music in the rural

met. Growing up and going their separate ways, Vietti ended up on the West Coast in Oregon, and the Kilmers on the East Coast in Western North Carolina. It was in the small forest town of Cottage Grove, Oregon, where Vietti met and teamed up with Salcido. In 2010, Ray and Alex released their debut album All The Lies You Want To Hear. The album, and the band’s high-energy stage performance garnered the attention of record labels and producers alike. The Harmed Brothers chose to release their next album on the indie label Lackpro Records. In May 2012, The band released their long-awaited sophomore effort Come Morning.

Ben Rice brings real vintage blues into the modern era. Twisting soul, roots blues, and west coast blues with rockabilly, funk, and rock. Ben Rice, as Lloyd Jones put it, “gets it.” Already established as a virtuosic guitar player, his soulful voice and inventive twists on blues are creating a buzz up and down the West coast. Rice’s last all original CD “Pour Me Some Whiskey” is being praised as being among the best CD releases from the Northwest. Although Rice is young, he is experienced. Playing along with some of the top musicians in the National Blues Scene. First picking up

awards, nominations, and a music degree from the University of Oregon. In a music world saturated with young guitarists, his reputation is building. Not as a “hot rod guitar player” but as a good band leader, great songwriter, wonderful performer, soul inspiring singer, and a guitar player that can do it all, “Of course he does, it’s Ben, he can do everything.”

For many years, the Humlie Kids were weaned on the music of yesteryear. They learned the music song by song, rhythm

music. They would love to record a music album (CD) for all to enjoy their music. In fact they have already begun the recording process, but they need help to go the distance. Call to ArtistsPlanetary Path of Newberg and the Chehalem Cultural CenterThis call to artists combines art and science. The Chehalem Cultural Center and the Planetary Path of Newberg Project are accepting proposals from artists for six different outdoor public art installations depicting Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune.

The artistic interpretations of the planets will be installed along a .87-mile scale model of the solar system along a walking tour through Newberg’s Cultural District and civic corridor. The Planetary Path of Newberg is intended to merge science and art to create a unique and educational attraction for students, visitors and community members.

Proposal submissions are due on August 1, 2013. The artist’s submission form and detailed information is online at www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/exhibit/planetarypath/

The Planetary Path of Newberg is a project of the Newberg-Dundee Ford Institute Leadership Program. Project funding is through The Ford Family foundation, private grants and donations.

Celebrating commitment to our community, Carlton’s Walk in the Park – a benefit for local charities – combines fabulous artists and musicians with outstanding local restaurants and wineries for one magical summer weekend in Yamhill County’s wine country. Last year’s Carlton’s Walk in

the Park was a great success, with both an increase in attendance as well as in income generated from the event. Thanks to all who attended, contributed and volunteered!Since its inception in 2003, Carlton’s Walk in the Park has raised over $225,000 to support local community and civic organizations including food banks, education, police and fire departments and athletics.This grassroots event began with the vision to give back to the communities of Yamhill and Carlton. To date, this event has done so much more. Carlton’s Walk In the Park is more than a summertime celebration.

Graduates recognized for artistic achievementsThe Arts Alliance of Yamhill County presented $1,800 in awards this spring to six graduating seniors from the county’s high schools who have distinguished themselves in the arts.

The $800 Marg Johansen Scholarship went to Bridget Keaveney, a senior at the Sheridan Japanese School. Keaveney has not only excelled in visual arts but also has shared her talents in community service, according to the teachers who recommended her for the award. She is a member of both the National Honor Society and the National Japanese Honor Society. Last year she organized an art show that incorporated themes of acceptance and social issues. This year she has taught eighth- through 12th-grade students a class called Change, in which the history of oppression toward women was discussed, along with ways to address it. She also has been a summer-camp and after-school peer tutor in Japanese. Keaveney plans to major in studio art at Mills College.

The award is named for Marg Johansen, a weaver and educator who died in 2004. She was an active member of the local arts community, and her work can be seen in many locations internationally. The Marg Johansen Scholarship is presented annually by the Arts Alliance of Yamhill County (AAYC) to a graduating high school senior from Yamhill County who exemplifies artistic achievement and intends to pursue further education in an arts-related field, including visual arts, music, dance, theater or creative writing.

The Arts Alliance also presented $200 Student Recognition Awards to five graduating seniors from Yamhill County. These students were nominated by teachers and counselors at their high schools for outstanding achievements in the arts. This year’s recipients were:• Raul Rodriguez, Dayton High School;• Cydney Simpson, McMinnville High School;• Sebrina Arruda, Sheridan High School;• Ida Aaron, Willamina High School;• Matthew Garand, Yamhill-Carlton High School.

AAYC WELCOMES TWO NEW BOARD MEMBERS

Pat Angland

Meet Pat Angland, who is an incoming member of AAYC’s Board of Directors. She will be serving a two-year term as secretary. She’s been living in Yamhill County since 1992, and retired from McMinnville School District in 2005. Pat has been volunteering, serving on the Education Committee for AAYC since 2005. Pat began her artistic endeavors in second grade as a director of the many variety shows in her neighborhood, and they raised some coin for the

cards and is active in the local group that meets and designs the cards at the McMinnville Senior Center. Creative writing is her newest passion, and Pat is a member of a local writing group. She also has helped with the Terroir Creative Writing Festival for several years. Pat has served on the AAYC Board before, beginning a year or so before Currents Gallery opened on Third Street. She researched cooperatives from British Columbia to Berkeley in the year prior to the opening. She also helped craft the structures that still serve to support the membership. Her two years as acting director of the gallery were active and exciting. She hopes to bring that enthusiasm and energy to the Board of Directors of AAYC. “The Arts Alliance mission, of nurturing the creative spirit in all, is a fabulous goal,” Pat says, “because it is the creative that feeds our spirits.”

and a life long supporter of the arts. She has been a community activist serving on Chamber Board of

Association Board and currently the past president of the Chehalem Cultural Center Association. She is a strong proponent of arts education and making certain that music and theater, as well as both 2 and 3 dimensional arts, are a part of our day to day life. Kris says, “One of my personal passions, and a twelve year project, is to see the Chehelem Cultural

arts of our region.” Kris is mother of two grown children,

her toes. She enjoys music, fused glass and painting as a means of refreshing head, heart and soul.

Interested in turning a wine barrel into art or furniture and donating it to the auction?

The barrels are free and the artist will receive 10% of the sale price. Barrel Art not sold in November

will be auctioned at our December 8th event.
