When QPAC was conceived over 30 years ago the intent was to create an organisation that contributed to the cultural, social and intellectual development of all Queenslanders. Numerous studies confi rm what many who work and participate in the arts intrinsically know: that participating in the arts – be it as an artist, performer, or audience member – has a variety of benefi ts to individuals and society.

At QPAC actively connect people, ideas and content with the aim of enhancing arts literacy to create a sense of connected communities that live, work and play alongside one another and are as appreciative of opera as they are of football.

What you see on stage is the fi nal result of many hours hard work and creative energy. The nature of the performing arts is such that the result is ephemeral…you have to be there to capture the experience. In many ways the performance is but one side of the story; I’d encourage you to dig deeper to use our resources to discover more about the performances you see, to feel connected with the artist on stage and the writer in the wings and to share your experience with those around you and in your community.

2014 is shaping up to be one of our biggest years on record. This is the fi rst year our three signature works will occur in one calendar year: Clancestry, A Celebration of Country, Clancestry, A Celebration of Country, Clancestry, A Celebration of CountryOut of the Box Festival and the Australian debut of American Ballet Theatre as part of the QPAC International Series. These programs though diverse in content, are at the heart of what makes QPAC a space for people to experience the arts and create connections.

Swan LakeOf all the great classics performed by American Ballet Theatre today, Swan Lake remains the quintessential ballet, the one that defi nes the standards of the Company, tests its dancers and ennobles the spirit of the audience.

This romantic fable of ill-fated passion, dreamlike transformation and ultimate forgiveness is set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious score. Three MasterpiecesDemonstrating their incredible versatility and depth of talent, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) will perform a triple bill showcasing ballets by three of the world’s leading contemporary choreographers:

• Bach Partita by Twyla Tharp, revived by ABT in 2013 for the fi rst time in 28 years, has been cited as, ‘a treasure house of dance innovation’ (New York Times);

• Seven Sonatas by Alexei Ratmansky, a former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet and arguably the world’s most sought-after contemporary choreographer; and

• Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins, considered by many to be the American character ballet par excellence.

This triple bill showcases ABT’s ability to bring an edgy and fresh approach to ballet, proof of their status as one of the world’s leading dance companies.

Queensland Ballet is honoured to be the fi rst company in Australia to present this celebrated work of 20th century dance.

Serenade, one of legendary choreographer George Balanchine’s earliest works, is a milestone in the history of dance. As fresh and illuminating now as when it was created in 1934, this iconic work re-shaped classical ballet into poetic geometry with a drifting, swirling ensemble, awash with beauty and bathed in light.

BANGARRA DANCE THEATRE

Patyegarang

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, Bangarra – Australia’s multi award winning dance theatre company – commemorates the story of a young Eora woman, Patyegarang, who shared her culture and language with one of the fi rst settlers in the place we now call Sydney.

As the colonial fl eet arrived on Eora country in the late 18th Century, Patyegarang befriended the colony’s timekeeper, Lieutenant William Dawes, gifting him her language in an extraordinary display of trust and friendship, which now inspires our imaginations about ‘fi rst contact’.

In Dawes’ notebooks, rediscovered in 1972, are transcripts of this remarkable cultural exchange. Patyegarang’s words are a window into a rich, complex and utterly different perspective on her world, its values and its sacred meanings.

Bangarra liberates Patyegarang from the library shelves, putting spirit into her heart, as a striking visionary and educator. Cribb Island was once a burgeoning seaside holiday destination, but when the Depression hit, it became the home for the unemployed. Brisbane residents saw it as a shameful home of down-and-outs, but the people who lived there knew it as a tight-knit community. In the 1980s, Cribb Island became no more as the community was forcibly relocated to make way for the new Brisbane airport.

Bernard Lanskey and Stephen Emmerson have been making music together for decades. Meeting as undergraduates at the University of Queensland, they both later studied in London with inspirational pianist Peter Wallfi sch. Now based in Singapore where he is Director of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Bernard returns home to perform a stunning concert of duets with his friend and colleague, Stephen Emmerson.

The afternoon opens with Brahms’ deeply touching homage to Robert Schumann – a neglected masterpiece written in honour of his friend – and culminates in Schubert’s Fantasie, a work of heartrending beauty and drama and perhaps the greatest piano duet ever written. Masterpiece Series 3: The Planets

Queensland Youth Symphony (QYO) presents a program of cosmic proportions. A trip through the galaxy, a world premiere, and a concerto with one of the hidden gems of the orchestra make up this evening full of shimmering grandeur.

The program begins with the world premiere of a work by QYO composer-in-residence Samuel Dickenson. Holst’s trademark work, The Planets, conjures vivid depictions of seven planets, such as Mars, the Bringer of War, and War, and War Mercury, the Winged Messenger.

In a rare appearance of the tuba as solo instrument, award-wining tubist Andreas Hofmeir takes the stage for Duda’s Tuba Concerto No. 1. Acclaimed internationally, Hofmeir ‘handles his weighty instrument so light-footedly that some violinists will be envious – from the lowest depths to a tenor brilliance.’

Musicians are drawn from the immense talent within The Con’s Bachelor of Popular Music which has launched the careers of graduates hailing from The Delta Riggs, The John Steele Singers, Nine Sons of Dan and Wolfmother.

QPAC’s Melbourne Street Green is the perfect venue to experience this weekly ‘mini festival’ come alive through the warmth of wood fi res, hot and cold beverages, delish comfort food options and smiling faces. Angel or devil, king or clown – what to wear?

Not always an easy decision. How a performer looks should tell the audience something about their character and circumstances. They must complement the production style, while still looking like they are wearing clothes the character would select.

The costume designer analyses the text or scenario and, in consultation with the director and set designer, an overall concept for the production is developed. Sketches are made of each of the characters and these sketches, often including details of accessories and fabric samples, become

the blueprints for the costume makers. When the costumes are complete, with hair and makeup added, the fi nal ‘look’ of the character emerges for both the performer and the audience.

Out of the Box 2014 Keynote AddressRussell Granet, Executive Director of the Lincoln Centre Education (New York), the educational cornerstone of Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts, US, will explore the concept of Imaginative Learning, begun in 1975 and experienced by over 20 million teachers, school administrators, parents, community members, teaching artists, pre-service teachers, university professors, and artists. The Lincoln Center Education plays a pro-active, dynamic part in the preparation of young minds for the world of adulthood and the demands of the workforce.
