There is something magical about live performance, whether it’s in a trick of the lights, a theatrical sleight of hand, an enchanting backdrop or musical interlude. When the house lights go down and the stage lights up, a new world is created and it lasts only as long as that performance, never to be re-created exactly alike.

This summer QPAC is full of magical experiences. Dinosaurs come to life in the Cremorne Theatre which has been transformed into a pre-historic grotto for Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo™. Giggle and Hoot will jump out of the TV and appear live on stage in the Playhouse and the world’s biggest musical, The Lion King,

continues to showcase Disney’s theatrical magic in the Lyric Theatre. This musical phenomenon was recently announced as the highest grossing show in any entertainment medium surpassing movies like Titanic and Avatar, and other musical favourites The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. Immediately after The Lion King the Lyric Theatre turns green for Wicked’s return to Brisbane.

In the Concert Hall, a brand new event in The Illusionists series takes centre stage…The Illusionists 1903 transports audiences back in time to when the grand illusionists were the masters of suspense. The Concert Hall will also host QPAC’s longest running annual program event, the Spirit of Christmas – a concert that celebrates the end of the year and the magic of Christmas. Now in its 31st year, QPAC’s Spirit of Christmas showcases the QPAC Choir, Brisbane Chorale and Brisbane Birralee Voices along with soloists Simon Burke and Christie Whelan Browne under the direction of renowned Australian conductor Simon Kenway and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

In 2015, QPAC celebrates 30 years of live performance. There will be many magical moments throughout the year and I hope that you can join with us to celebrate this milestone.

Home to more than 1,400 performances across the year, there are often a number of shows on each day. But what you might not know is that you can enjoy your time with us just as much outside the theatre as you do inside.

Swing by every Friday at dusk for Green Jam Sessions; a free evening of smooth jazz, chilled beverages and great company held on QPAC’s Melbourne Street Green. Unwind to cool tunes played by the multi-talented musicians from the Queensland Conservatorium Gri� th University as they showcase their impressive skills with a repertoire of jazz standards, contemporary grooves and laid back funk.

We’ve completely refurbished our restaurant, with new decor and a new menu to make your occasion that much more special. We’ve opened up our café with a wonderful green area, creating the perfect place for a co� ee or a light meal before a show. We’ll be giving our bistro a makeover soon too to give you even more options to meet friends and hang out.

Visit our free exhibition The Art of The Lion King and trace the journey from animated fi lm to blockbuster live musical. Bringing together, text, images and video with original design elements, this exhibition explores the design, music, movement and staging of this unique production.

Over coming months, we’ll be looking at ways to make your time unique. Whether you are dining with us, catching a show or just hanging out, we want you to encounter strange, wonderful and captivating performances, artworks and designs at every turn. Foyers might become the rehearsal rooms for aspiring artists and our outdoor spaces could turn into a stage for the next generation of performers.

Giggle and Hoot & Friends

Jimmy Giggle, Hoot and Hootabelle are setting o� on a giggle-icious live stage adventure with their friends the Bananas in Pyjamas and Hoopla Doopla’s Zap, Mimi and Jango this summer!

Giggle and Hoot and Friends is a 50 minute stage spectacular with everyone’s favourite songs, dancing, and of course fun and laughter.

Giggle and Hoot, the multi award winning and much loved ABC4Kids preschool program, focuses on preschooler’s lives and routines through songs, stories, friendship, laughter and imagination. Digital Natives #nofi lter

The show Digital Natives #nofi lter is made up of three short plays all of which explore this title in their own unique way.

The show is performed by ASPA-FTV Creative Theatre Production (CTP) Students. The CTP course is designed to provide students with a holistic and creative theatre experience, culminating in a live performance with a professional edge. This is an extremely exciting and unprecedented theatre experience for young Brisbane actors!

CTP Students were given the title six months ago and then collaborated with their teacher/Director to create an original play. Over the course of the semester students have assisted in the writing and producing of the show and will now star in the production on the 13th December.

Boston MarriageThe erudite Anna and Claire dwell together on the fringes of the Boston elite, but to keep themselves in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed, Anna has been accepting expensive presents from a wealthy married man who’s become besotted by her. Claire, meanwhile, is aging disgracefully and is set on seducing a much younger woman, and wants not only Anna’s blessing but her help.

Boston Marriage is a quick-fi re comedy riddled with the wicked wit of the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer behind Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow, David Mamet. With sarcasm and ribald banter it chips away at the pretensions and proprieties of high society and blows apart class distinction, while exploring the compromise needed to keep a marriage alive.

Boston Marriage is directed by Andrea Moor, who delighted audiences and critics alike and won a Matilda Award for 2013’s Venus in Fur.

Legendary rock pioneer, Ian Anderson – best known as the fl ute and voice behind the genre-defying Jethro Tull – will breathe new life into the best of his epic catalogue in Australia this December.

When Jethro Tull released their iconic album Thick As A Brick in 1972, front man Ian Anderson led the way in revolutionising the rock concept album.

To commemorate this stand-out moment in rock and roll history, Anderson will revisit Thick As A Brick, and will include songs from Thick As A Brick 2 with the best of Jethro Tull – including Locomotive Breath, Aqualung, Living in the Past and Bouree – as well as selected tracks from his album Homo Erraticus.

Don’t miss one of the luminaries of rock music as he showcases a catalogue that has shaped modern rock.

New Year’s Eve GalaFor 30 years the Queensland Pops Orchestra has provided the ultimate New Year’s Eve event.

The musical experience will take you from the gondolas of Venice to the razzmatazz of Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue performed by award winner pianist Alex Raineri. Young virtuoso violinist Cherin Lee will also make her Pops debut with the gypsy sensation Zigeunerweisen by Sarasate and the highly emotional theme from Schindler’s List.

Sing along with Auld Lang Syne. Be transported into the most positive frame of mind to start 2015 with the solo vocalists and 64 piece orchestra. The program is designed to enhance your celebration of the year gone and excite your expectation of the year to come.

Last year the Pops introduced the Black Tie ticket to the delight of 200 patrons. The package includes an A reserve ticket to the 9.30pm performance followed by exclusive access to the QPAC roof top function room to enjoy French champagne and exquisite canapés whilst watching the thrilling display of pyrotechniques.

Before Mary Tyler Moore, before Julia Louis-Dreyfus, before Ellen, there was Lucille Ball.

After years paying her dues in B-movies, Lucille Ball won the public’s hearts and reigned supreme as television’s biggest star in I Love Lucy – one of the most popular sitcoms in American history. Wacky, fearless, and totally endearing, Lucy broke the mould for the way women were allowed to behave on screen.

Lucy was joined every step of the way by her real-life and on-screen husband Desi Arnaz, and together they held up a funhouse mirror to every marriage in America. But beneath the seemingly ditzy veneer of a 1950s housewife was an ambitious and savvy businesswoman whose success owed little to luck. As the producer of I Love Lucy once said, “Lucille Ball is about as di� erent from Lucy Ricardo as anyone could possibly be.”

2015 is set to be a huge year for the Australian Chamber Orchestra in more ways than one. Not only is it 40 years since its very fi rst concert, but it’s also 25 years with the great Richard Tognetti at the helm.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has undergone many reincarnations since it was fi rst played by the talented orphans of the Ospedale della Pietà in 18th-century Venice. Now, Richard Tognetti and Joseph Tawadros bring their own blend of musical alchemy to this program, reminding us that Venice is barely a day’s sail from Cairo.

Almost 300 years after Vivaldi penned The Four Seasons, Joseph Tawadros brings the sounds of the near east to Australia with a selection of original works from Permission to Evaporate, and works exploring the crossroads of oud and string orchestra.

Gala Opening - Ode to Joy

In an electrifying opening to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 Season, you won’t just hear Beethoven’s Choral Symphony featuring the famed Ode to Joy, you will feel it as new-generation maestro Gergely Madaras reveals contemporary meaning within its ancient truths. Widely considered one of Beethoven’s greatest works and one of the most well-known works in the classical repertoire, this symphony will feature an all-star cast with Soprano Dominique Fegan, Mezzo Soprano Nicole Youl, Tenor Henry Choo and Baritone David Wakeham. The QSO will also perform the world premiere of Gordon Hamilton’s commissioned work The Trillion Souls featuring The Australian Voices.

This is one of three concerts in QSO’s 2015 season that celebrates QPAC’s 30th Anniversary.
