Locally grown food is environmentally sustainable, fresher tasting and supports the economic vitality of rural communities. To learn more about how the Greenbelt is protecting our farmland and environment, and about the local craft beers made from the Greenbelt’s hops, visit greenbelt.ca
Ontario’s GreenbeltAt nearly two million acres of protected
green space and fertile farmland, Ontario is home to the world’s largest Greenbelt. It’s the solution for clean air, fresh water,
healthy local food, and a thriving economy with good jobs.
COLOUR PALLETE
Ontario Craft Brewers Ontario’s craft brewing sector is thriving, stimulating economic growth across the province. With 70+ independent brewery members, The Ontario Craft Brewers Association is dedicated to creating great tasting, premium quality porters, bocks, stouts, ales, pilsners and lagers, right here in Ontario.
Using traditional brewing methods, local brewers rely on fresh, all natural local ingredients such as barley and hops, organic ingredients as well as new flavours and styles utilizing local fruits, vegetables, spices and maple syrup. Many craft brewers also create cask conditioned ales which are served fresh, unpasteurized and unfiltered.
Craft beer is the LCBOs fastest growing segment, growing at anywhere from 20 to 30% per year. So support local and ask for Ontario Craft Beer next time you’re in a pub, restaurant, grocery store, The Beer Store or the LCBO.

“Using unprocessed hops, harvested by our staff at the height of freshness, we brew the beer the very same day they are picked”says Nickel Brook co-owner John Romano. And his commitment to fresh and local doesn’t stop there. Made Corporate Citizens of the Year in recognition of their generous contributions to the local community, NIckel Brook also uses Greenbelt raspberries from uncle scott’s Farms in their Berliner
Weissbier and maple syrup from smokey Kettle in Grimsby for their Maple porter. And check out their Wet Hop Pale Ale which contains Bertwell hops, believed to be the province’s only indigenous variety. You don’t get more fresh, tasty and local than that.

SELf GUIDED 1Did you know...
Wellington Brewery is Canada’s oldest independently owned microbrewery and growing fast. With twice as many employees as 4 years ago, they’re as passionate about generously giving back to their supportive community as about producing award winning beers using local ingredients. Try their Farmers’ Market Rhubarb saison, using produce straight from 3 local Farmers’ Markets, their pumpkin ale with squash from stroms Farm, or their ‘wet hop’ harvest beer using Greenbelt hops from Clear valley. Watch out for their Welly One-Off’s; brand new, unique, small-batch specialty beers, some of which use locally captured yeasts. Be prepared for some tasty surprises!

The Saints & Sinners: Bootleggers’ Run Trail map is your passport to beer, wine and cider producers around south Georgian Bay. The area was once a
hotbed for bootleggers during Prohibition. Today it boasts imaginative producers who use local hops, apples and grapes to create award-winning products.

Farm to Fork and Grain to Glass
our distinctive terroir defines what
Windsor-Essex proudly showcase to
visitors – a love of great food & drink.
Home to the largest concentration of
greenhouses in North America and
Canada’s longest growing season, our
fields supply local roadside fruit stands,

with a cornucopia of fresh produce from
Apples to Zucchini. From Cooper’s Hawk
Vineyards very own hard cider to Wiser’s
distilling Canada’s oldest continuously
produced Canadian whisky, Windsor-Essex
has plenty of reasons to visit.

Grow Strong Where You’re PlantedGrey County – known for great skiing, hiking, cycling and paddling – is also an emerging food and drink destination. Built on sweet limestone soils and clean water, local farms excel in raising lamb, apples, trout, beef and more. All are used in restaurants across the region as Grey County chefs embrace the farm-to-table
ethos. They know that fresh foods taste best and that buying direct from neighbouring farms deepens community bonds and economic resilience. Enjoy 11 stops on the saints & sinners Trail, Feast oN designated restaurants, and other hand-picked local favourites when you visit.

Even more to taste and see: craft distilleries, cideries and breweries – experience tours, tastings & tap rooms
Ontario and its Greenbelt have always been an ideal place to grow hops, so perfect that discreet patches of hops from prohibition era farms still survive 100 years later! Due partly to a worldwide hop shortage, but also to the popularity of the local food and beverage movement, 2007 saw the emergence of a new generation of Ontario hop farmers. And they are busy keeping up with the demands of locally minded craft brewers, who use up to 10 times the amount of hops than in standard brews from larger breweries.
It’s just as well that ontario’s high quality hops can grow up to 12 inches a day in peak season! Find out more at http://www.ontariohopgrowersassociation.ca or at Harvest Hop and Malt on Discovery Route 1 (Hamilton).

Innovative local food partnerships bringing
communities together
Take, for example, the Old Flame Brewing
Co. in historic downtown Port Perry. They
send their “spent grain” to local yellowlees
Family Farm, the sheep are fed the grain,
the lamb meat goes to a local butcher,
Herrington’s, where they make beer infused
Lamb and Lager pies. Spent grain is used
to make Port Perry’s famous hanks pastries
and old Flame’s Maple Walnut stout is made
with maple syrup from Willowtree Farm.

A renewed commitment to local, and ideal conditions for cider apples in Ontario and its protected Greenbelt, have encouraged the establishment of 23 world class cideries who have come together as part of the Ontario Craft Cider Association.
OCCA ciders win medals at the world’s biggest competitions, using the juice from only 100% Ontario apples and pears. We are creating hundreds of environmentally responsible jobs and building communities throughout rural Ontario.
Enjoy free tastings or a cider/cheese pairing at a Greenbelt cidery and learn more about this naturally fermented beverage that refreshed our pioneering forebears.
Cider is the fastest growing category of alcohol in Ontario, let’s keep it deliciously local.
