Q. What about orthodontics made you specialize in the field? A. Two things. First, orthodontics is like a puzzle; you have the challenge of unrav- eling the cause of a bite problem, then making a plan to correct the problem and achieve the end goal of an excellent bite, a beautiful smile and improved dental health. Secondly, what could be a better job? I believe in the value of a smile. It is so satisfying to help someone achieve a beautiful smile, knowing that it can make a huge difference in a person's feelings about themselves and their success during their lifetime. Q What is one piece of dental advice you wish everyone would follow? A. Consistently take good care of your teeth for better general health and an improved quality of life. Q. What inspired you to become a dentist? A. I guess I grew up with dentistry. My father, Dr. Otto Stevens, is a retired dentist who practiced in Spokane for 39 years. I worked in his office doing all sons of odd jobs, and found that the combination of art and science involved with dentistry, as well as the interaction with patients fascinated me. There weren't many women dentists at that time, but I was up for the challenge, knowing I would have a great career. Q. What three words best describe your practice philosophy? A. Excellence, Gentleness, Integrity Q. Do you floss regulatly? A. Yes, I do! Q. Finish this sentence: "When I am not peering into the mouths of patients, I like to .... " A. Be with my family, bike, ski, quilt, knit, participate in activities to give back to my community and continue to learn. Q If someone were considering a career in dentistry, what advice would you give to them? A. Do it! Dentistry is a wonderful profession. Patients will often ask what it takes to become an orthodontist. It is a long and competitive process (eleven years of college and dental school) - but those eleven years will go by one way or another. By setting realistic goals and taking it one step at a time, a person can achieve their goals! 58 SPOKANECDA LIVING I January - February 2010 wwwspokanecda.com Brooke Marie Cloninger, DDS 2001 East 29th Avenue Spokane, WA 99203 509-534-4600 Kenneth J.
