Preface
Punjab Thalassaemia Prevention Program (PTPP) is an initiative of Government of Punjab, Pakistan. It aims to prevent Thalassaemia major in the country.
Currently, the programme is operational in 16 districts of Punjab (Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sheikupura, Kasur, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Bahwalnagar, Jhelum, Attock & Toba Tek Singh) and gradually this program will be introduced to all 36 districts of Punjab. The PTPP is providing following services at no cost to the Thalassaemia community and general public:
• Thalassaemia awareness
• Extended Family Screening
• Genetic Counseling
• Pre-natal Diagnosis through CVS
• Pre-marital screening for the general public

Thalassaemia Awareness Week
8th May is celebrated internationally as Thalassaemia awareness Day. Therefore, Punjab Thalassaemia Prevention Program (PTPP) has organized many activities (i.e. Seminars, Awareness camps and Walks) in different districts of Punjab. Following were the major activities in this regard:
Background
• Six Thalassaemia Awareness Seminars were organized in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Kasur, Multan, Sheikupura and Vehari districts.
• An Awareness activity was also arranged at Chattar Park near Murree. • Thalassaemia Awareness and pre-marital screening camps were organized in 16
districts of Punjab. • Thalassaemia awareness walks were organized in Multan, Muzaffargarh, Vehari,
Bahawalnagar, Khanewal, Bahawalpur and Attock districts.
PTPP Lahore has organized a Seminar with the theme: Preventing Thalassaemia; Saving Generations at main auditorium of Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) Lahore on 4th May 2013. In this seminar there were over 300 participants that included Thalassaemic children/parents, medical students and faculty/doctors of FJMC, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore, King Edward Medical University, Lahore General Hospital, Children Hospital Lahore and many other organizations. Following were the guest speakers: Prof. Dr. Rakshanda Tayyab (chief guest), Prof. Dr. Javaria Manan, Prof. Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Lt. General Moin U Din Haider, Major General Dr. Suhaib Ahmad, Prof. Dr. Shamsa Humayun & Dr. Nisar Ahmad.
Thalassaemia Awareness Seminar in Lahore
PTPP Rawalpindi has organized a Seminar at Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC) on 8th May 2013.Following were the guest speakers: Prof. Dr. Raia Asghar, Brig. Dr. Parwez, Maj. Gen. Dr. Sohaib Ahmad, Prof. Dr. Atifa, Prof. Dr. Rizwana Choudary & Prof. Dr. Shoaib Shafi.

PTPP Multan has organized a Seminar at Children Hospital, Multan on 8th May 2013. The main speakers of the event were, Dr. Rana Aftab, Dr. Aslam Sheikh, Mr. Kamran Ishafaq and Dr, Shahid Hafeez.

PTPP Kasur has organized a Seminar at TMA Hall, Kasur on 7th May 2013. The main speakers of the event were, Dr. Rana Waqar Sadiq, Dr. Hafiz Qamar Irshad, Dr. Khalid Mahmood and Mr. Muhammad Naveed Tahir.

PTPP Faisalabad and DHQ Hospital Faisalabad have organized a Seminar at Thalassaemia treatment centre on 8th May 2013. The main speakers of the event were: Dr. Nisar Ahmad and Dr.Falakghir.
Thalassaemia Awareness Seminar in Faisalabad
PTPP and Ripah Welfare Foundation sheikupura has organized a seminar at DHQ Hospital, Sheikupura on 22nd May 2013. The main speakers of the event were, Prof. Dr. Shamsa Humayun, Dr. Nisar Ahmad, Dr. Babar Ameen, Dr. Mubashir Ahmad, Mr. Mian Javeed Latif (MNA) and Mr. Hamid Mahmood.

PTPP has also organized Thalassaemia Awareness Camps (TAC’s) and Walks in different districts of Punjab. During these TAC’s besides providing information on Thalassaemia, pre-marital screening camps were also arranged.
