CENTERVILLE MESSENGER (096380) Free Upon Request-Published Weekly by Centerville Church of Christ, 138 N. Central Ave., Centerville, TN 37033-1427 September 7, 2016 Volume XXXVI - Number 35 Centerville Church of Christ Sunday 9am / 6pm Wednesday 7pm “I Hope You Know” The scene of the garden reveals in one image why Jesus came to the earth. His deity was before the foundation of the world (John 1:1), but was eventually made known to the world, “The word became flesh and dwelt among men, and we beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). But when the time was right, when Jesus had preached the good news of the kingdom of God, when He had worked mighty works with His hands through His signs and wonders and miracles, He allows Himself to come to the moment of the cross. But before the cross there was His coming to the garden. Looking into the Garden of Gethsemane shows a scene which is the contrast of our way of thinking. We think the best life is a life avoiding sorrow. The Lord Jesus revealed that in sorrow there is an experience to be embraced not escaped. Even in thinking about the immense sorrow, Jesus still called it necessary, “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour” (John 12:27). A recent survey of millennials asked for important life goals: +80% said to get rich; 50% to become famous. The power and allure of happiness has lead individuals down exotic paths only to find empty pleasures. It stands in contrast to the findings of the longest running longitudinal study, which revealed the key to happiness in long life was the presence of meaningful relationships. It mattered not if there were numerous or abundant relationships, but rather the depth of the connection. Jesus set the image for all life to follow. At times our attempts to escape the loneliness can seem for not, especially if the place to where we escape contain people or reminders of our loneliness. Case in point, Jesus invited others to join Him in a familiar place, with His sorrow, and their support was anything but stellar (Matthew 26:40, Mark 14:37). We learn something about support when we see Jesus in the garden. Jesus did not allow the behaviors of others to keep Him from seeking the Father. Peter would deny Him, Judas would betray Him, and all would forsake Him. But, lack of commitment and fragility of humanity was not sufficient of an excuse for Jesus in the flesh to forsake the Father. We will claim it though. When the obvious and glaring weaknesses of others have touched our lives we will permit those things to stand in our ways of doing what is right. There is never enough wrong in the another person’s life worth keeping us from the church. Make no mistake about it, the price for your sins was paid on calvary. But the battle for your soul was fought in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46). It was the separation from the Father which plagued the heart of our Lord. Even though He did not want to be separated from the Father, but for our sake, He would. In the garden we see everything our Lord understands about our lives and our needs. In the garden, we learn the true nature of what it means to not be lonely, but even in the depth of such loneliness, we learn the Lord will provide what is needed to sustain our lives. I hope you know, there is never a moment we face, where our Lord has not been and cannot come to meet our need.

“I Hope You Know”

The scene of the garden reveals in one image why Jesus came to the earth. Financial abuse can take many forms, from illegal debits, to third-party scams and even unauthorized withdrawals by an approved caregiver. Many criminals are targeting those that are 65 years and over. At present the Senior Citizens in America are losing almost $2.9 billion annually to fraud enacted upon them, and this amount is expected only to grow. The American Bankers Association has created four education programs to assist in empowering Americans and communities with the facts and knowledge of how to protect themselves against fraud.
