This year, the Vitra Design Museum proudly presents the »Atlas of Furniture Design«, an encyclopedic overview of the history of modern furniture design. Featuring nearly 1700 objects by more than 300 designers and 121 manufacturers, it includes approximately 2500 illustrations ranging from detailed object photographs to historical images documenting interiors, patents, brochures, and related works of art and architecture. The basis for the »Atlas of Furniture Design« is the collection held by the Vitra Design Museum, one of the largest of its kind with more than 7000 works. The book presents selected pieces by the most important designers of the last 200 years and documents key periods in design history, including early nineteenth-century industrial furniture in bentwood and metal, Art Nouveau and Secessionist pieces and works by protagonists of classical modernism and postwar design, as well as postmodern and contemporary pieces. The »Atlas of Furniture Design« employed a team of more than 70 experts and features over 550 detailed texts about key objects. In-depth essays provide sociocultural and design-historical context to four historical epochs of furniture design and the pieces highlighted here, enriched by a detailed annex containing designer biographies, glossaries, and elaborate information graphics. The »Atlas of Furniture Design« is an indis-pensable resource for collectors, scholars and experts, as well as a beautifully designed object that speaks to design enthusiasts.

Das Vitra Design Museum veröffentlicht 2018 den »Atlas des Möbeldesigns«. Die über 1000-seitige Publikation bietet einen einzigartigen enzyklopädischen Überblick über die Geschichte des modernen Möbels. Vorgestellt werden rund 1700 Objekte von über 300 Designern und 121 Herstellern, illustriert durch über 2500 Abbildungen, von detailgenauen Objektfotografien bis zu historischen Bildern von Inneneinrich-tungen, Patenten, Broschüren und Referenzwerken aus Kunst und Architektur. Grundlage für den »Atlas des Möbeldesigns« ist die Sammlung des Vitra Design Museums, mit über 7000 Objekten eine der größten ihrer Art. Das Buch umfasst Werke der bedeutendsten Designer der vergangenen 200 Jahre und dokumentiert alle wichtigen Phasen der Designgeschichte. Dazu gehören Möbel des 19. Jahr-hunderts aus Bugholz und Metall, Entwürfe aus der Zeit des Jugendstils und der Secession, Designikonen von Protagonisten der Moderne, aber auch Möbel der Postmoderne und der Gegenwart. An der Vorbereitung für den »Atlas des Möbel-designs« waren über 70 Experten beteiligt. Über 550 Texte liefern detailgenaue Objektanalysen, Essays zu vier großen historischen Epochen beschreiben den soziokulturellen und designhistorischen Kontext der gezeigten Objekte, ergänzt um einen umfangreichen Anhang mit Designerbiografien, Glossaren und Informations-grafiken. All dies macht den »Atlas des Möbeldesigns« zu einer unverzicht- baren Recherchegrundlage für Sammler, Wissenschaftler und Experten – und zu einem wunderbar gestalteten Objekt für Designenthusiasten.

Nightclubs and discothèques are hotbeds of contemporary culture. Since the twentieth century, they have been centres of the avant-garde that question estab-lished codes of social living and experiment with different realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk. »Night Fever. Designing Club Culture« is the first book to give a comprehensive overview of the design history of the nightclub, examining its cultural context and international scope. Examples range from Italian clubs of the 1960s created by the protagonists of Radical Design and the legendary Studio 54 where Andy Warhol was a regular to the Palladium in New York, designed by Arata Isozaki, and more recent concepts by architecture studio OMA for the Ministry of Sound in London. Featuring photographs of club interiors, posters, flyers, fevered clubgoers and their fashionable apparel, »Night Fever« takes the reader on a fascinating journey through a world of glamour, subculture, and the search for the night that never ends.

Nachtclubs und Diskotheken sind Epizentren der Popkultur. Seit den 1960er Jahren versammeln sich hier Avantgarden, die gesellschaftliche Normen infrage stellen und andere Ebenen der Wirklichkeit erkunden. Victor Papanek The Politics of Design

The designer, author, and design activist Victor J. Papanek (1923 – 1998) anticipated an understanding of design as a tool for political change and social good that is more relevant today than ever. »Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design« gives an encompassing overview of Papanek’s oeuvre, at the heart of which stood his preoc-cupation with the socially marginalized, his commitment to the interests of areas then called the »Third World«, as well as his involvement in the fields of ecology, bionics, sustainability, and anti-consumerism. Alongside essays and interviews discussing Papanek’s relevance in his own era, the book also presents current perspectives on his enduring legacy and its influence on contemporary design theory. Original Papanek family photographs, art and design work, drawings, correspondence and countless materials from the Victor J. Papanek Foundation archive, University of Applied Arts Vienna are reproduced here for the first time, alongside work by both Papanek’s contemporaries and designers working today.

Der Designer, Autor und Aktivist Victor J. Papanek (1923 – 1998) war Wegbereiter eines sozial engagierten, nachhaltigen Designansatzes, demzufolge Design nicht nur Formgebung ist, sondern ein Werkzeug politischen und sozialen Wandels. Das Buch »Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design« bietet erstmals einen umfassenden Überblick über Papaneks Leben und Werk. Im Mittelpunkt steht Papaneks Einsatz für soziale Minderheiten, für die Belange der damals sogenannten »Dritten Welt«, für Ökologie, Nachhaltigkeit, Konsumkritik und die Orientierung an Naturformen unter dem Begriff der Bionik. Neben Essays und Interviews, die Papaneks Bedeutung zu seiner Zeit in den Blick nehmen, untersucht dieses Buch auch seinen anhaltenden Einfluss auf den Diskurs rund um das gegenwärtige Designgeschehen. Darüber hinaus werden noch nie veröffentlichtes originales Bildmaterial aus dem Archiv der Victor J. Papanek Stiftung der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien (u.a. Familienfotos, Kunst- und Designwerke, Zeichnungen und Korrespondenzen) wie auch Arbeiten von Papaneks Zeitgenossen und Designern der Gegenwart gezeigt.
