    Relative Humidity: 20%~ 85%

    Altitude: < 2000m

    Temperature: 0C to 50C

(Pollution Degree) EN 61010-1:2001 specifies the pollution degreesand their requirements as follows. The PSW falls under degree 2.

Pollution refers to addition of foreign matter, solid, liquid, orgaseous (ionized gases), that may produce a reduction of dielectricstrength or surface resistivity.

Pollution degree 1: No pollution or only dry, non-conductivepollution occurs. The pollution has no influence.

Pollution degree 2: Normally only non-conductive pollutionoccurs. Occasionally, however, a temporary conductivity causedby condensation must be expected.

Pollution degree 3: Conductive pollution occurs, or dry, non-conductive pollution occurs which becomes conductive due tocondensation which is expected. In such conditions, equipmentis normally protected against exposure to direct sunlight, precipitation, and full wind pressure, but neither temperaturenor humidity is controlled.

Theory of OperationThe theory of operation chapter describes the basic principles of

operation, protection modes and important considerations thatmust be taken into account before use.

    Operating Area Description

Background The PSW power supplies are regulated DCpower supplies with a high voltage and current

output. These operate in CC or CV modewithin a wide operating range limited only bythe output power.

The operating area of each power supply isdetermined by the rated output power as wellas the voltage and current rating. For examplethe operating area and rated power output forthe PSW 30-36 is shown below.

    Voltage

    Current

    30

    360W rated power

    10

    12 36

    PSW 30-36 Operating Area

When the power supply is configured so thatthe total output (current x voltage output) isless than the rated power output, the powersupply functions as a typical constant current, constant voltage power supply.

If however, the power supply is configuredsuch that the total output (current x voltageoutput) exceeds the rated power output, the

effective output is actually limited to the powerlimit of the unit. In this case the output currentand voltage then depend purely on the loadvalue.

    CC and CV Mode

    CC and CV modeDescription

When the power supply is operating inconstant current mode (CC) a constant currentwill be supplied to the load. When in constant

current mode the voltage output can vary, whilst the current remains constant. When theload resistance increases to the point where thecurrent limit (ISET) can no longer be sustainedthe power supply switches to CV mode. Thepoint where the power supply switches modesis the crossover point.

When the power supply is operating in CVmode, a constant voltage will be supplied tothe load, whilst the current will vary as theload varies. At the point that the loadresistance is too low to maintain a constantvoltage, the power supply will switch to CCmode and maintain the set current limit.

The conditions that determine whether the

power supply operates in CC or CV modedepends on the set current (ISET), the set voltage

(VSET), the load resistance (RL) and the criticalresistance (RC). The critical resistance isdetermined by VSET/ISET. The power supplywill operate in CV mode when the load

resistance is greater than the critical resistance. This means that the voltage output will beequal to the VSETvoltage but the current will beless than ISET. If the load resistance is reducedto the point that the current output reaches theISETlevel, the power supply switches to CCmode.

Conversely the power supply will operate inCC mode when the load resistance is less thanthe critical resistance. In CC mode the currentoutput is equal to ISETand the voltage output isless than VSET.

    Slew Rate

Theory The PSW has selectable slew rates for CC andCV mode. This gives the PSW power supplythe ability to limit the current/voltage draw ofthe power supply. Slew rate settings aredivided into High Speed Priority and SlewRate Priority. High Speed Priority modedisables slew rate settings for CC or CV mode.Slew Rate Priority mode allows for user

adjustable slew rates for CC or CV mode. Therising and falling slew rate can be setindependently.

Bleed resistors are designed to dissipate thepower from the power supply filter capacitors

when power is turned off and the load isdisconnected. Without a bleed resistor, power

may remain charged on the filter capacitors forsome time and be potentially hazardous.

In addition, bleed resistors also allow for

smoother voltage regulation of the powersupply as the bleed resistor acts as a minimumvoltage load.

The bleed resistance can be turned on or offusing the configuration settings.

NoteBy default the bleed resistance is on. For batterycharging applications, be sure to turn the bleedresistance off as the bleed resistor can dischargethe connected battery when the unit is off.

    Internal Resistance

Background On the PSW, the internal resistance of thepower supply can be user-defined in software.

(Internal Resistance Setting, page89). When theinternal resistance is set it can be seen as aresistance in series with the positive outputterminal. This allows the power supply tosimulate power sources that have internalresistances such as lead acid batteries.

    Alarms

The PSW power supplies have a number of protection features.

When one of the protection alarms are set, the ALM icon on thedisplay will be lit. For details on how to set the protection modes, please see page49.

OVP Overvoltage protection (OVP) prevents a highvoltage from damaging the load.

OCP Overcurrent protection prevents high current

    from damaging the load.

OTP Over temperature protection protects theinstrument from overheating.

Power Switch Trip When the Power Switch Trip configurationsetting is enabled, the power supply willautomatically shut down when a protection

setting has been tripped (OCP, OVP, OTP).

Alarm output Alarms are output via the analog controlconnector. The alarm output is an isolatedopen-collector photo coupler output.

    Considerations

The following situations should be taken into consideration when

    using the power supply.

Inrush current When the power supply switch is first turnedon, an inrush current is generated. Ensure thereis enough power available for the powersupply when first turned on, especially if anumber of units are turned on at the sametime.

CautionAllow at least 15 seconds between cycling thepower. Cycling the power on and off quickly cancause the inrush current limiting circuit to fail aswell as reduce the working life of the input fuseand power switch.

    Pulsed or Peaked

    loads

When the load has current peaks or is pulsed, it

is possible for the maximum current to exceedthe mean current value. The PSW powersupply ammeter only indicates mean currentvalues, which means for pulsed current loads, the actual current can exceed the indicatedvalue. For pulsed loads, the current limit mustbe increased, or a power supply with a greatercapacity must be chosen. As shown below, apulsed load may exceed the current limit and

the indicated current on the power supplyammeter.

    Reverse Current:Regenerative load

When the power supply is connected to aregenerative load such as a transformer or

inverter, reverse current will feed back to thepower supply. The PSW power supply cannotabsorb reverse current. For loads that createreverse current, connect a resistor in parallel tothe power supply to bypass the reversecurrent. This description only applies when thebleed resistance is off.

    PSW LoadResistor

    Reverse Current:Accumulativeenergy.

When the power supply is connected to a loadsuch as a battery, reverse current may flowback to the power supply. To prevent damage

to the power supply, use a reverse-current-protection diode in series between the powersupply and load.

    PSW Load

    Diode

CAUTIONEnsure the reverse withstand voltage of the diodeis able to withstand 2 times the rated outputvoltage of the power supply and the forwardcurrent capacity can withstand 3 to 10 times therated output current of the power supply.

Ensure the diode is able to withstand the heatgenerated in the following scenarios.

When the diode is used to limit reverse voltage, remote sensing cannot be used.

    Grounding

The output terminals of the PSW power supplies are isolated with

respect to the protective grounding terminal. The insulationcapacity of the load, the load cables and other connected devicesmust be taken into consideration when connected to the protectiveground or when floating.

Floating As the output terminals are floating, the loadand all load cables must have an insulationcapacity that is greater than the isolation

    Remote Sense

Remote sense is used to compensate for the voltage drop seen

across load cables due to the resistance inherent in the load cables. The remote sense terminals are connected to the load terminals todetermine the voltage drop across the load cables.

Remote sense can compensate up to 0.6 volts (compensationvoltage). Load cables should be chosen with a voltage drop lessthan the compensation voltage.

WARNINGEnsure the output is off before connecting anysense cables.

Use sense cables with a voltage rating exceedingthe isolation voltage of the power supply.

Never connect sensing cables when the output ison. Electric shock or damage to the power supplycould result.

NoteBe sure to remove the Sense joining plates so theunits are not using local sensing.

Parallel / Series OperationThis section describes the basic operations required to operate the

power supply in series or parallel. Operating the PSW series inparallel increases the total power output of the power supply units. When used in series, the total output voltage of the power suppliescan be increased.

The number of the power supplies that can be connected in seriesor parallel depends on the model and the mode:

    Series Mode: 2 units maximum

    Parallel Mode: 3 units maximum

To use the power supplies in series or parallel, units must be usedin a Master-Slave configuration. In the master-slave configuration amaster power supply controls any other connected slavepower supplies.

ConfigurationConfiguration of the PSW power supplies is divided into five

different configuration settings: Normal Function, USB/GPIB, LAN,Power ON Configuration, Calibration Settings and System Settings.Power ON Configuration differs from the other settings in that thesettings used with Power ON Configuration settings can only be setduring power up. The other configuration settings can be changedwhen the unit is already on. This prevents some importantconfiguration parameters from being changed inadvertently. PowerOn Configuration settings are numbered F-90 to F-95 and the otherconfiguration settings are numbered F-00 to F-61 and F-88 to F-89.
