    INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

    THE TELECOM INDUSTRY

    INTRODUCTION

    India is the world's largest democracy, the seventh largest

    country and fifth largest economy. The country is home to the

    world's largest reservoir of skilled manpower and poised to

    achieve the status of a global IT powerhouse. An independentjudiciary, strong legal and accounting system, free and vibrant

    press, reservoir of highly skilled manpower is other unparalleled

    features of the Indian business environment.

    India's telephone network is one of the largest in the world

    and the second largest among the emerging economies. For the

    last few years, the growth has been 22-23%. The far-reaching

    economic reforms since 1991 have unleashed the immense

    growth potential of the Indian economy. A new spirit of economic

    freedom is now steering the country. The second-generation

    reforms are aimed at further deregulation, ushering in greater

    market competition and improved efficiency in production and

    services, thus stimulating investment and growth.

    The country industry forecast for the Indian Telecom Industry

    takes into account the country specific factors such as politics,

    business policies and macro-economic initiators that have an

    impact on this sector and its main segments.

    THE CELLULAR INDUSTRY

    Cellular Industry in India

    Cellular mobile services were one of the first areas to be

    opened up to private competition. The whole country was divided

    into the 4 metropolitan cities of and 19 telecom circles, which

    were roughly analogous with the States of India. The first metro

    cellular network started operating in August 1995 in Calcutta. As

    of December 2003, the Indian cellular mobile industry had 68

    networks on air, serving over 1400 towns and cities and coveringthousands of villages and serving almost 28.44 million

    subscribers across the country including of cellular as well as

    WLL (M).

    Details of Operators

    During the year 2002-03 the Cellular Service market

    witnessed a very high growth, with cellular subscribers recordingan increase of more than 97%. The subscribers base was 12.687

    million at the end of March 2003 as compared to 6.40 million in

    March 2002. And it is more than 30 million as on end of February

    2004.

    68 Cellular Service Providers compete with incumbent

    operator (Bharti Group Airtel) for this service having a share of

    25% of subscribers. The 2nd place was captured by BSNL whohave started their services only in the last financial year; having

    the market share of about 18%. Hutchinson Group and Idea

    Group were at third & fourth place respectively

    Cellular Service Trends

    POST-PAID MARKET

    1. Subscriber Base

    During the quarter ending on Mar-03, subscriber base

    experienced a decline of 5.5% across the country. At the end of

    Dec-02, there were 22.48 lakhs subscribers in postpaid platform,

    which has come down to 21.05 lakhs at the end of Mar-03.

    2. Affordability

    Rental Revenue per Subscriber. Based on the data

    submitted on post-paid, rental per subscriber increased by 6.94%

    on average.

    Airtime Revenue per minute: Trend of reduction in average

    airtime revenue realized per minute was seen.

    Usage Pattern: It was observed that the monthly usage per

    subscriber increase by about 15%.

    ARPU: All India ARPU for postpaid have experienced a

    marginal increase of 0.30%. Contributor to this increase wasMetros alone of 13.34%.

    Other Revenue: Other revenue includes revenue from

    roaming service, value added services, installation charges and

    misc. revenues.

    The topic presented here is related to telecom sector. The

    study presented here shows the Effective selling of post paid

    services in retail outlet for idea cellular limited in present era. The

    trend of the cellular industries is in the upward movement or in the

    downward movement can be stated.

    RESEARCH DESIGN

    Objective of the study

    The objective of the market survey is to study theeffective selling of Post-paid in retail outlets.

    Our study also aims to study the different players in thisindustry and where the Idea cellular limited stands with

    their competitors.

    Methodology

    The methodology includes getting questionnaires fill up bythe people.

    There are two questionnaires one for retailers and one for

    customers.

    Sampling

    As the population is too large, it is not possible for us totarget each and every retailer. Therefore we chose thesimple random sampling for both retailers as well as forcustomers, which has covered retailers and customers fromvarious areas and helped about customers and retailersperception.

    Sample size

    We have chosen a sample size of 400 customers for marketsurvey and 200 retailers for market survey.

    DATA COLLECTION

    In this Research Problem, we used secondary as well as primary method for

    the collection of data.

    Scope of the study

    This study shall help the managers in taking variousdecisions like:

    Which companys sales are higher and why?

    Which service Pre-paid or Post-paid is in demand andwhy?

    What company should do to sale the Post-paid in retailoutlets?

    Are the retailers satisfied with profit margin and of differentcompany in this industry?

    How many people are satisfied with the after sales serviceof Idea as well as their competitors?

    How many people want to buy the service of Idea as welltheir competitors post-paid or Pre-paid?
