PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS Greetings all and welcome to Week 3. I must say the school has resumed in 2014 in a wonderful state. Our classes are extremely settled and behaviour is excellent. I have seen lots of work from across the school and I am thrilled with the standard and effort on display. Let’s all work hard to keep this great start going for all of 2014. Teacher ‘Meet and Greet’ Today will see the teacher ‘Meet and Greet’ for 2014. Parents can come to the school and meet their child’s teacher today from 4pm – 4:30pm. Teachers will speak on curriculum, class procedures, expectations and other things like homework. Please be punctual as the ‘Meet and Greet’ will begin at 4pm and will end at promptly 4:30pm due to long travel distances for some teachers. Book Packs Book packs for 2014 have been priced at $40 for all students. This pack provides students with the text books they need for 2014. The school will provide exercise books and pencils, glue sticks etc. Please pay for the book packs as soon as possible or make arrangements to pay them off by contacting the office. Part payments require a deposit and can be paid off over a period of 4 weeks. If you require a further extension of time please contact me. P&C The first meeting of the Bonnells Bay P&C for 2014 will be held next Tuesday 18 th February at 6pm in the staff room at school. I invite all parents and friends to come to the school and join the P&C. This wonderful group not only help out by raising money they provide a very effective sounding board for the development of school policy and wish to make a great school even better. Permission to Publish Last week we sent out the Permission to Publish forms to parents. By signing this form you are allowing your child to be included in school publications. This can include year books, annual school report and newspaper articles. Please consider signing this form as failure to do so excludes your child from being recognised for their excellence and participation in school activities. Parking and Traffic Alert I have included an email from the Cardiff Highway Patrol highlighting the traffic and parking penalties that can be incurred around schools. The Police have warned us that patrols around schools will be increased over the coming months due to complaints from schools and communities. The last visit from the Highway Patrol cost six parents money and points. Please be aware and follow the rules. Closing Dates for Events Last year we introduced a policy to strictly enforce the cut-off dates for events such as excursions, carnivals and performances. Please be aware that if you miss the cut-off date for notes and payments without making prior arrangements with the office your children will unfortunately be excluded from the event. We have had to resort to this measure because the school has had to absorb the short fall in expensive exercises due to parents not paying. If there is a problem with payment please call us and make an appointment to meet with me so we can organise deferred payment or assistance so children do not miss out. Please remember to call before cut-off dates. Variety Club Fund Raiser On Sunday 23 rd February our wonderful P&C will be serving breakfast for the Variety Clubs ‘Splash Around the Lake’. The Variety Club has donated $3000 worth of movie cameras and software to the school which will allow us to make movies and animations in 2014. The equipment has been ordered and we are really looking forward to using it. The P&C will be paid for organising breakfast for the sailors at the Aloha Close Jetty beginning at 6:30am and finishing at 10am. I will be helping out and some teachers will be attending but the P&C needs your help to raise money for the school and also raise our profile across Newcastle. Please help us out as many hands make light work. See you at the P&C meeting next week. Mark Stiller, Principal Term 1 Week 3

LIBRARY NEWS Welcome to Week 3 in the library. Kindergarten will be able to borrow from this week. Please remember to send their library bag with them and to keep the books in a safe place at home. Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) is also underway. Children in K-2 will bring home their PRC record sheet to record the books they read. Students K - Year 2 need to read a total of 30 books to complete the challenge. Students in Years 3 - 6 will be keeping their records at school. They will have the opportunity to read from the PRC list each week during their library lesson. They have to read a total of 20 books to complete the challenge.

I am looking forward to brightening the library up this year with displays of class work. We will also re-organise our games area with some better storage. If you have any games you would like to donate to the library they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to the families who have done so already. Happy Reading Mrs Tate BOOK CLUB Book club is due back next Monday 17th February. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by the short time frame. SWIMMING CARNIVAL REMINDER Just a reminder that the Swimming Carnival is on tomorrow. The program has been included with the newsletter. Please bring the program to the carnival as a limited number of programs will be available on the day.

Variety Splash Breakfast We have been given a great opportunity to help the Variety Club with their fundraising event, the Splash, whilst making a little bit of money for our school.

Sunday 23rd February, 6:30-10am

Aloha Close Jetty, Bonnells Bay We are in need of some parents to assist us with serving breakfast to the generous sailors that participate in this event. We will be providing them with hot and cold options (bacon and egg rolls & cereals). If you are able to assist us on this day could you please SMS (or call) Kirsten 0411 44 9300 with your name and time period you can assist. Every little bit of help is valuable and appreciated. So come for half an hour or more, we’d love to see you there. Next Meeting Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 18th February at 6pm. Come and share your thoughts on the way the school year has started. Be involved in our yearly plan and ask the questions that have been running through your mind since day one. Everyone is welcome (kids can be kept busy too). We are a casual group, who enjoy a cuppa and nibble while we chat Term 1

Thanks to our hard working uniform shop volunteers for managing the new year orders and sports shirt orders.

The canteen is seeking new volunteers. Pop up one day and see what is involved.
