SCHOOL COUNCIL
Principal’s Report Student Performance Reports (SPA) Families will receive SPA reports for students at the school this week. Our SPAs are a great indication of how well a student is working in their classes. The higher a SPA, the closer a student is to achieving their potential with their studies, which of course puts students in good stead for achieving their goals.
Please take the opportunity to read through the SPA results with your children. Celebrate the good results, as they are well earned. It is also a good opportunity to identify areas for improvement. Setting improvement goals as a family is an excellent strategy for optimising school outcomes.
Parent – Teacher Conferences
Following on from the SPA conversations with your children, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with teachers at our Parent-Teacher Interviews on Wednesday, 28
th March from 4pm – 7pm. You will receive
appointment sheets with your reports. While it is not essential to make bookings with teachers, it will serve to cut down on waiting times. I strongly encourage families to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences with your children so that three-way conversations can be conducted to ensure that everyone is on the same page in regard to your child’s learning program.
Canteen Special!
I would like to thank Annemarie Mayberry for her fantastic work in our canteen while Lisa took a well-earned break. We knew that Annemarie was a great cook as we had been lucky enough to have had a sample of her treats occasionally, but cooking for a hungry hoard of students is a different kettle of fish. Annemarie did a wonderful job, maintaining the very high standards that Lisa has set over the last couple of years.
Lisa has now returned and all of the old favourites, plus yummy daily specials, are continuing to fly out the door at recess and lunch times.
Abby Shaves for a Cure
We are very proud of Abby Phyland for walking the walk and putting her body on the line in the search for a cure for leukaemia. Abby raised over $1000 for the cause, as well as helping to raise awareness of the problem. There are many ways students can show leadership, through official roles within the college or independently; Abby has definitely demonstrated outstanding leadership with her commitment to a cause she cares about.
Last Day of Term 1
As is tradition, we will finish slightly earlier on Thursday, 29th March, with the school day concluding at 2.30pm. The
afternoon will see the Year 12 students taking on a strong staff team in a game of basketball during the lunch break and this will be followed with a whole school assembly that will celebrate student achievement over Term 1.

Before and after

Moira Shire Youth Council It was a pleasure to attend the first Moira Shire Youth Council for 2018 with three of our amazing Junior Councillors: Haylie Duggan, Kate Kelly and Melissa Kennedy. Our students thoroughly enjoyed exploring the concept of leadership, what makes a good leader, and what leadership qualities they would like to develop in themselves. It was wonderful to hear their ideas on what makes the town of Numurkah ‘great’, and what types of services and facilities would make the town even better for young people. Moira Councillor and previous Lord Mayor Cr. Gary Cleveland was very impressed by the input and ideas of our wonderful team. Moira Shire Youth Development Coordinator Sharon Nye also complimented the work of Haylie, Kate and Melissa. Highlights for our team included receiving their Moira Youth Council badges and shirts. Thank you for the way in which you represent your college and your peers with pride.
International Women’s Day 2018
International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on March 8th. Several staff including Lorraine Madex, Chris Sigley, Rae Wood and myself alongside College Captain Zoe Martin and Year 12 Mary Down were up early to enjoy a morning Tai Chi session in Newman Square, followed by a delicious breakfast back at school. We further celebrated International Women’s Day by having a wonderful panel of accomplished local women who shared their experiences with our students. A huge thank you to Fay Scadden for arranging this – and to Chris Sigley for the behind-the-scenes support of this great event.
Staying Safe Online
Sexting means the sharing of sexually explicit photos/videos via any form of social media. Once digital images are sent, they are no longer private and can be found by anyone. Unfortunately, these images can also be used to exploit, bully and harass. It is important to note that if you are under 18 you ARE NOT exempt from the law. If you are involved in sexting that is non-consensual (without permission) you are committing a criminal offence.
To protect those under 18, there are two offences:
It is illegal to intentionally distribute/threaten to distribute an intimate image of someone under the age of 18 where the person has not provided consent.
A person who creates, shares or possesses an intimate image of a person who is under 18 is considered to be involved in child pornography, unless both parties are under 18 and there is not more than two years age difference. If the photos depict a criminal offence, then the exception DOES NOT apply.
How to stay safe? Do not send intimate photos/videos to anyone. Also, never feel pressured to send intimate photos/videos to another person, and ask a trusted adult for help if you are being pressured to send photos/videos.

If there are any parents who wish to help out, please contact Rae Wood at the College.
“We’re all in this together!”
The Unit 3 Outdoor Education class ventured down to Wilsons Promontory for their bushwalking trip earlier in the month. An early start was met with some tired but excited faces but after a long bus drive we were all excited to arrive at the Prom. Some of the views on the way in were breath taking and only promised to get better. After checking in to the park we split into 2 groups and headed off on our walks, with one group heading to Sealers Cove and the other off to Oberon Bay. Both groups were lucky to have some amazing views and sights as they walked within the National Park. Night one was spent at the respective campsites and checking out the amazing beaches in the area. On the second day both groups met up again at Tidal River where we spent some time in the beautiful beach area and enjoyed exploring the rocky areas along the shore. After a night spent fighting off wombats and wallabies we were able to meet with a Parks Victoria teacher who gave us a fantastic run down of the Wilsons Promontory area. This covered from when indigenous peoples were alone here thousands of years ago all the way up to the present day uses. Another five or so hours on the bus then had us home - tired but extremely satisfied with what had been a great trip.
Special thanks to Miss Gierveld, Miss Meads and Mr Smyth for assisting on camp and sharing the driving.

Literacy Hub News
Last week was an exciting one in the Literacy Hub with special attention given to International Women’s Day.
Students were given the opportunity to hear about why we have an International Women’s Day, together with learning about significant women in history. They were able to show their support by outlining their hand, writing a quote and adding it to the International Women’s Day display.
The highlight of the week was when students were able to meet inspiring local women and learn about their achievements, an event organized by Fay Scadden, NSC Careers Practitioner.
Of course throughout the course of the week new books continued to reach the shelves and the February monthly report showed a 70% increase in borrowing from the previous years. I am so proud of the reading being done by our great students!

Year 8 students have been busy combining their design and embroidery skills by creating the stunning pieces pictured above. These and many more are on display in the foyer at NSC. Students began by creating their design, cutting out it out using the laser cutter and weaving in threads to create these masterpieces.

The final instalment on the progress of our Year 8 Textiles students who have been busy experimenting with weaving.
The NKR kitchen has been super busy with students creating a range of breakfast dishes. All students have been striving to complete tasks within the allocated time and presenting their dishes whilst showing innovation and creativity.
This week (week 7), students will develop their own breakfast burrito that requires them to modify an existing recipe.
