Spain’s quest for an empire in North America and the impact its settlements had on the Native Americans living there is the lesson that I am going to talk about.

Describing the latest effects of the colonies built by the Spanish, French and English in North America.

The Need For Trade

Spain’s main interests in settling the borderlands were protecting its empire and expanding its economy. However, the Spanish king also wanted to “bring people of that land to our Holy Catholic faith.”

Reasons why the settlements were established in the Spanish borderlands

Protect claims, raise sheep, and build missions.

Raise corn, and build irrigation canals.

Raise children, explore new waterways.

Why did the Spanish government create the Spanish borderlands north of New Spain? The Spanish feared that they

would be attacked by Native Americans.

The Spanish wanted to protect their new found gold and silver from other European countries.

The Spanish believed that the borderlands would bring good luck to their explorations.

Spain Build Presidios To convert Native

Americans to become Catholic.

To raise animals and horses to improve transportations.

For protection from attack.

Used horses for transportation, to hunt, and for warfare
