Evaluation Task 7- Looking back at your preliminary task

Camera Work • In our prelim we used our camera work to create the greatest effect of our story line where

two boys are having a fight. To do this we at first had a long shot of the first guy walking in which then led to a close up of his face, to then an over the shoulder shot of the two boys standing together. The over the shoulder shot was able to show which one had more power in the situation. Then there was a wide shot of them standing together to show both of them standing together and an establishing shot. Our camera work was very effective because it clearly showed who was dominant and who was the weaker person which is what we wanted. It also clearly showed the location.

• However, in my opinion our camera work is more effective in our thriller as each shot had a stronger meaning than in our prelim. For example our close up was more effective as it showed the clear fear in the students face when the MP gets shot which is what a close up should do, show emotion. Our establishing shot shows the handshake of the MP and the headmaster this is effective because it suggests everything is ok when in reality something bad is going to happen. Our long shot is from the assassins point of view this is effective because it builds suspense to the bad event. We achieved these camera shots in our thriller by planning a second by second chart of shots to make sure they are as effective as possible

Mise en scene • In our prelim our mise en scene is very different to our thriller which shows our progression

over time. In our prelim there is no special make up or costumes which does not really clearly show our story line, we should have had the boys dressed more young and scruffy as they were having a fight. The actors were young boys so this is used to create the effect that young boys do argue. We did not have any props so was very difficult for the audience to create any meaning from our prelim

• I think that our mise en scene was much more effective in our thriller. We had suitable actors to fit our target audience such as a middle aged man, a young assassin, young school children which creates meaning of a political thriller that all these people would be involved. We used props such as a microphone, gun. These props are used to enhance suspense such as the gun is used to shoot the assassin it is shown many times in our thriller to grasp this effect. This is an effective use of mise en scene which we do not have in our prelim. The costumes in our thriller are more effective as they fit the character such as a smart suit for the MP and casual clothes for the assassin to suggest authority in society.

Location of our thriller shows more meaning than in our pre lim as it fits in with the genre of a political thriller

Editing • In our prelim we did not really use many editing techniques which further

shows our progression from it to our product. Our prelim was very simple was no major editing techniques which is not very effective in showing the meaning of our story line

• However, our film shows wipes, quick cuts to build suspense which makes our film effective to our story line. This suggests that editing is much more effective in our thriller as it is used to further enhance worry and suspense for the audience.

Sound• Our prelim only uses diagetic dialogue which makes it very simple but yet boring for the

audience, there is no sound to build up tension towards the quick argument that the boys have, the diagetic dialogue is also not very loud to enhance shouting, this shows how far in progression we have come in our thriller

• In our film we have different sounds such as non- diagetic music at the beginning, the non-diagetic music is there to have a nice feel but also enhance worry and suspense, we have the sound of a heart beat to symbolise life and how the MPs life is going to be taken, the heart beat is there to sympathise the audience and keep them interested. The diagetic sound of the gun shot is there to enhance surprise and fear which is effective as it further shows the conventions a thriller which is surprising. The diagetic dialogue of the MP speaking is there to lurk the audience into being mesmorised by the speech until the shooting occurs. This shows that sound is more effective in our thriller as each part of it is there for a different reason in which we can explain which is there to make our thriller more exciting than our pre lim

How have we worked together as a team?

• As a team, overall we have worked extremely well together we have come up with all the ideas together and discussed them as a group, we have shared our ideas not kept them to our selves. We have had to change a lot about our film and worked really well in doing so to make it the best that we can. Our team work skills have improved from the prelim to now, this is because when we were doing our prelim sometimes we would disagree on ideas and someone would usually take over the editing who was more confident but now we have all taken on roles and taken turns so that we can all have the best contribution to our thriller
