Principal’s MessageThis is my second year at Lismore High School and there has been much achieved by us as a school. I have been proud of the suc-cesses of staff and students and what we have achieved this year.

We conducted the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) survey in 2013 and 2014. The survey measures student satisfaction with the school on a num-ber of measures. More than 200 students com-pleted the survey and the feedback has shown that students have seen significant improve-ment within the school from 2013 to 2014.

Our student leadership team has grown and have paved the way with further generations of stu-dent leaders in the school. I have enjoyed working with the school leaders of 2014 and look forward to working with the 2015 leaders. We completed our second batch of elections for our school lead-ers and prefects for 2015. The time I have spent working with our 2015 leaders inspire me with confidence of positive change within the school.

I have spent a lot of time meeting with the Depart-ment of Education and Communities lawyers and the Perpetual Trust lawyers of the Nesbitt award. The Nesbitt award is a significant donation of funds to Lismore High School students. The award has been in abeyance for over five years due to com-plications with the trust in delivering on the condi-tions of the will. The new Nesbitt award which will begin in 2015 has the complications removed and will be focused around academic achievement.

We were one of handful of schools that was audited as part of the Australian Skills Qual-ity Authority (ASQA), vocational education and training audit program. It was a major achieve-ment by the staff at the school to successfully pass the audit. Our vocational offerings to stu-dents will be expanding with Business Services and Sports Coaching being introduced in 2015.2014 has been a year of development as we con-struct a new 3 year school plan to set the direc-tion for the school. We had consultation with staff, parents and students in the development of the new school plan. The new school plan reflects the priorities of the groups within the school.

We have had the best growth on our NAPLAN re-sults in literacy and numeracy in years. We had an

increase from 3 areas at state growth and above in 2013 to 7 areas at state growth and above in 2014. The unfortunate drawback is that the moresuccessful you are the less resources become available. As a result we lost staffing of our Learning and Support Teacher which was relocated to schools more in need.2014 saw major changes in the way technology is delivered at Lismore High School. The funding for our Technical Support Officer (TSO) ceased with the completion of the Digital Education Program (DER). We managed to keep Jaryd Gibson our TSO on until the end of 2014. Jaryd will join the staff as an administration member at the start of 2015.

2014 saw the introduction of the RAM (Resource Allocation Model). This resource has allowed us to support many activities and programs that improve student learning. This has included the High Achievers program. The program involved students from Year 10 to Year 12. Students went on an excursion to Sydney to see the different universities available and to meet students from two different Sydney schools. Students were also provided study skills lessons during the year.

In 2014 staff received professional learning in pro-ject based learning. Project based learning will be a new approach to learning to keep students en-gaged with what they are doing in the classroom. It is a collaborative approach to learning. Teachers from all faculties have been involved in the devel-opment of the projects and lessons in the project based learning. Mrs Catriona Fraser has led the pro-ject based learning with staff. In 2015 we will use project based learning with all our Year 7 classes.

We saw a number of retirements this year with Lindsay Kitching, Greg Zobel, Diana Doust, Ro-byn Dean and Anne Ford. We will miss these staff members and the valuable contribution they have made at the school. Greg and Lindsay have remained working with us as casual teach-ers during the year. Lindsay in particular has been working to support our senior students.2014 saw the implementation of the River’s College structure. Staff and community members made it clear that they want the name of Lismore High School will remain. A number of staff are part of the collaborative working parties. The college is trying to embrace new styles of collaborative working. 2015 will continue to expand on our successes as a school as we move into the River’s College structure.Yours sincerely, Nigel Brito - Principal

DeputyPrincipal’sMessage

2014 has been my first year as Deputy Principal at Lismore High School. Prior to this appoint-ment I have worked in eight other high schools and in North Coast Region school support. I have spoken publicly about my impressions of the school and would like to reflect on these.The students of Lismore High School are as good as will be found in any high school in the state. I have been so impressed by the friendliness shown to staff, the pride in school uniform, the com-passion for other students and the quality work completed. Certainly it is not a perfect world and some students need different levels of support, but as a group Lismore High School students can be proud of themselves as great young citizens.

Our school’s staff has been dedicated to provid-ing the learning experiences necessary for cur-riculum delivery. But what has impressed me is the extra time that teachers, learning sup-port officers and administration officers have given to enable extra experiences for our stu-dents. Excursions, camps, university visits to school, sporting and cultural opportunities have been provided due to the enthusiasm and commitment of our staff. Thank you so much.

Lismore High School has great history and tradi-tions and these have been strengthened during 2014. We have seen the re-establishment of blaz-ers and ties in our senior students. Our student Leadership Team has been expanded to include Captains, Vice-Captains and in 2015 nine Prefect positions with responsibilities in targeted areas; welfare, academia, music, creative arts, sport, en-vironment and Aboriginal studies. The senior stu-dents have taken their responsibilities on tremen-dously and do practical work like assisting with uniform monitoring. Congratulations to them.

Over the next few years the school will begin to prepare for its 100 year centenary. Lismore High School was established in January 1920 after thefoundation stone was laid in 1918 by Mr George Nesbitt, the member for Lismore.

The Nesbitt awards that are a significant part of the school’s annual presentations come from Mr Nesbitt’s financial support provided in his estate. When established Lismore High School was one of only five high schools located outside the Syd-ney metropolitan area. In 1957 the school was the largest high school in NSW with 1,438 stu-dents. While our numbers are not near that to-day, 2014 has seen enrolments begin to increase again as our community reputation strengthens.

During this year I have often stated that Lismore High School is a ‘strict’ school and I will continue to press that in future years. I believe that parents and the community want their school to be a dis-ciplined environment where students can learn in comfort, safety and happiness. Part of the meas-ure of providing this is to set appropriate rules and boundaries, be consistent with them and apply consequences, as well as support, if they are bro-ken. The school has been successful in doing this in 2014 and this is recognised by families and commu-nity. When meeting with the families of students I always conclude by saying, “thank you for your sup-port”. I would like to thank everyone in that regard.

An important development during 2015 will be the establishment of the Rivers Secondary College in Lismore. This will involve structures and opera-tions that enable Lismore High School, Kadina High School and Richmond River High School to work more effectively together to provide high quality public education in Lismore. Within the College structure a commitment has been given that each of the three schools will maintain its own individu-al identity. This is an exciting time and the benefits to our students will be noticeable and significant.

StaffChangesLukeWallaceLuke has tasken up the position of Head Teacher HSIE at Kadina High School early this year. He was a dedicated teacher who was well respected by both staff and students. He was very involved with the Gold Card Program at the school organising the Gold Card students and their reward excursions. His Geography excursions were also a high point for many students. Luke organised powerpoints of student achievements allowing students to show-case their talents at assemblies. Both students and staff wish him all the best with his promotion.

ScottAllenScott has been at Lismore High School for a number of years, work-ing mostly in the Science Faculty. He was a popular teacher who in-spired students, his Biology classes being well attended. This past year he was also Year Advi-sor for Year 10. Scott has been goven a perma-nent position in the Science Faculty At Richmond River High School. Both students and staff at Lis-more High wish him all the best for the future.

Trent WhiteTrent has been part of the Eng-lish Faculty for a few years. He was an enthusiastic teacher who re-lated well to his students. He has been offered a full time contract at Banora Point. We all wish him the best for the future.

BronwynKingBronwyn has been part of Lismore High School for many years. Her knowledge of and her work with our indigenous students is unparalleled. She worked as an Aboriginal Tutor and worked with small groups on the LEXIA reading program. She would help the students in the classroom. She made herself read-ily available to any student who needed help and would also assist staff. She has taken up a perma-nent position elsewhere and will be sorely missed by both staff and students. We wish her all the best.

RetirementsLindsayKitchingAt Lismore High School we wish to thank Lindsay for his valued service to students and staff. His teaching contribution at four schools over 38 years has been substantial. He has played an important role in developing the skills of students in the field of Social Science. Throughout Lindsay’s career he has worked with a variety of students from rural areas to new immigrants and refugees. Lindsay has made a considerable contribu-tion to Lismore High School where over 13 years he was Deputy Principal and Relieving Principal. In his career he has effectively relieved as Princi-pal for 2 years over that time. In his time at Lis-more High School he has provided stability of school leadership as the school has changed. Lindsay has contributed to many physical improvements in the school that have resulted in improved student learning outcomes, such as the Trade Training Centre and the Dance Studio. We note his strong commitment for the provision of students with disabilities in the support unit of the school. His commitment to the welfare of stu-dents at Lismore High School has been exem-plary. We note his strong interest in professional learning for himself and his colleagues. Lindsay has also served in regional consultancy positions to further professionally develop his colleagues. We at Lismore High School wish him a hap-py, healthy and long retirement and hope that he will maintain the many links he has with education. Greg ZobelAfter almost 39 years of teaching Science it’s time to end all the fun.

Long time Science teach-er Mr Greg Zobel goes on retired this year. Mr Zobel has been at Lismore High School for 16 years and in this time has taught thousands of students many different things about the amaz-ing world of Science in his own, often spec-tacular way. We wish him well for the future .

Throughout Greg’s teaching career he has always shown a keen interest in the academic and social development of his students. As a classroom teach-er and as an exemplary Physics teacher he has pro-vided numerous valuable experiences for students and staff. His effervescent personality and ability to always see the humorous perspective enabled him to relate positively to students and encouraged them to become actively engaged in their learning. He is well respected by his peers and his experience and willingness to share knowledge and expertise has been gratefully received by fellow staff. He was actively involved in parent-teacher evenings and scientific displays to promote his subject area.

As a Year Advisor for many years Greg has been very involved in the welfare of his students and demonstrated the caring and compassionate per-spective of his personality. Greg has also had an in-put into many extracurricular school programs and sporting activities including year 7 Swim School for sport and with Mr Luke Wallace School Surfing. Greg was a keen skier and snowboarder and he delighted in organising the annual school ski trip. Many students will remember these trips to the ski fields as the highlight of their school life. Greg is also a passionate and enthusiastic soccer player, coach and manager. Again this enthusiasm and passion is reflected in the many soccer teams he has fielded over the years and the successes they achieved in this pursuit such as the Bill Turner U15 soccer for both boys and girls and the open Girls Squad.

Greg has been an excellent teaching practitioner and an asset to the education of students in NSW.He thanks the Staff and Students of Lismore High for making a career in teaching so rewarding.

His Career Highlights are as follows:Starting out in Bega in 1976, teaching Year 11 and 12 Geology, coaching his first open boys soccer team and learning the ropes for survival in NSW’s high schools.

The came a transfer to Mulawaree High School in Goulburn for 4 years with the first taste of HSC Phys-ics. It was in Goulburn where he became involved in Lifesaving with the Roytal Lifesaving Society, teach-ing Swim School to years 7, 8 & 9 and becoming an Instructor and Examiner for the Bronze Medallion.

With a move to Wyong High School on the Cen-tral Coast, for the next 16 years, he continued with Lifesaving work, coaching soccer and introducing Surfing for Sport in 1986. It was also in Wyong that those famous ski trips began with 5 tours to Thredbo with Jindabyne Sport and Recreation.

Anne Ford

Anne has worked at Lismore High School since transferring from Richmond River High School in 1999. She started at Lismore High School by working as a laboratory assistant and working in the kitchens. She then transferred into the Front Office where she re-mained until she retired at the end of term 1 this year.

Anne was the welcolming face for the students as she helped them with any problems they might have such as timetables, uniform, signing in and signing out. She was also one of the First Aide people that both staff and students could call on if required.

Anne had an extensive knowledge of the students and their families at Lismore High which made parent contact easy. Her easy and friendly nature would put parents at thier ease and she became an important link between staff and the parent body. She was always ready to help anyone in need.

Both staff and students wish her all the best in her retirement.

DianaDoust

Diana has been a valued member of staff at Lismore High School since 1991. In that time she has been supporting students with learning difficulties as the LaST. She has also taught Maths. Di-ana has worked tirelessly with these students and their teachers providing as-sistance and modifying programs where needed to enhance and optimize the learning of these students. She has also managed the ELLA and then the NAPLAN testing, organizing timetables and running the exams. Diana ensured that the results were made available to teachers as soon as possible plus she was able to analyse the re-sults to show how the students had improved. She has been an absolute asset to the school and we wish her all the best in her retirement.

• Married, but because of my husband’s occupa-tion, I was required to resign from teaching. Lived in Gloucester, NSW, Manilla NSW, Carlingford, and North Rocks, Sydney and Lismore, NSW. Dur-ing this time I worked in a casual position for a limited number of days. Learnt to p[ay the piano -Had learnt as a child. Attained ATCL (Associate of Trinity College London), AMus A (Associated of Music of Australia) and LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London)

• Enrolled at University of New England in In 1981, enrolled at the University of New England in a B.A degree, majoring in Music/German. Con-tinued studies with a B.Ed (specialising in Special Education units)

• In 1988, attained a full time teaching appoint-ment as a Science/Mathematics teacher at Nim-bin Central School.

• Continued University studies by enrolling in a M.Ed., and on completion graduated with First Class Honours.

• Transferred in 1991 to Lismore High School as Support Teacher Learning Difficulties (now re-named Learning and Support Teacher) and stayed in this position until 13th October 2014.

• Enrolled in a PhD at Queensland University in 1992, but studying from a distance combined with working full time, made this degree an im-possibility and ended in withdrawal.

• Year Advisor for Years 11 and 12 in 2008-2009. Many of these students have done well in life after school.

• Coordinator of Girls Tennis Team 2008 - 2014. In 2009, Zoe Devlin, Katie Patterson, Marnie Thomp-son and Jessica Riley won the Regional Title and subsequently represented the region at the State Titles. Their photos now sit prominently on Di-ana’s desk.

• Member of The Lismore Rotary Club 2008-2013.

• Always interested in NAPLAN and foresaw the possibility of NAPLAN going online and prepared for this.

• Passed my knowledge on to younger staff, who may become interested in becoming a Learning and Support Teacher.

• A prolific traveller, having visited about 80 coun-tries.

• Set up a home-based tutoring centre, which will commence in 2015.

GoodByefromRobynDeanOn Wednesday 18th Decem-ber, I’ll be retiring after 17½ years here at Lismore High School and 27 years work-ing in schools. I won’t be making a farewell speech on Wednesday as I know to stand up in front of you all and try to speak and make sense would be just too dif-ficult, too emotional, I admit it, I’m a sook. I really wanted to just slink out the back door but wanted to also thank you all for making my time here what it has been, for helping me form lasting memories of this great school. That is why I am writing to you all to say “bye”, so please take this as my “farewell speech”.

I began my “life of Science” after graduating with a Science degree in Microbiology from Sydney Uni back in the last century. Never in my wild-est dreams did I ever think Science was for me; I was the girl who wrote a high school essay very strongly declaring that Science would be of no use for me once I left school, it was the one subject I liked the least, plus I was going to be a stay at home mum! All that changed when, at a loose end for a suggestion of where to go for work ex-perience, I headed off to the Dept of Agriculture (mainly because it was close by; I lived in the next suburb, and also a friend was heading there)… …well those 2 weeks changed everything, I was hooked as I spent my time, looking through fun-gus specimens on plants and generally helping out in the labs. This was really interesting after all!! During and after uni, I worked at the Health Commission’s Analytical Laboratories, Lidcombe, analysing council pool and river water samples from around the state and later was involved in the investigations of the Hawkesbury River oysters and also smallgoods during problems in the early ‘80s. Following that, I worked in the pool industry for a few years where the company I worked for was developing alternative treatments to chlorine.

Then the kids came along, now I was going to be a stay at home mum! Well, I was for a while, and loved it, but hikes in interest rates saw me looking for work, to suit the family…along came 3 days a

week at Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta as lab assistant, job sharing with a qualified dieti-cian (they wanted assistants who understood sci-ence). This was followed by 3 years as a founding member of staff at Bede Polding College, South Windsor, where not only was I the first lab as-sistant, I helped establish the labs and organise equipment for our first senior classes. Oh, and I also was the home science assistant initially too.

My husband’s transfer to Lismore with the Police Service in Forensics Section, saw us move to the North Coast, my intention being to spend more time with our girls and at their school helping with reading, canteen etc which I did until……my neigh-bour, who was coincidentally a Science Assistant at Kadina, was going away for 9 weeks and I filled in for her, followed by about a year in Home Science.

Then a permanent spot came up here at Lis-more High in 1996 as Science Assistant, and the rest is history. Five years ago I started job shar-ing in Home Science as well, deja vous at work. I’ve often said that working as Science Assistant and Home Ec Assistant is very similar; hands on, gathering, calculating requirements, order-ing supplies, preparing for and cleaning up after classes, lots of running around, ….and it’s true, though Home Science is much cleaner , and you score some tasty treats and recipes as a bonus.

I’ve loved working in Science, the staff I’ve worked with here have been among the best. The Home Ec girls have been wonderful to work with too. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with you all. To the SASS girls; THANK YOU. Though spread among the four corners of the school, we’ve had some memorable times together and thanks to Andrina some wonderful team building days. I’ve been involved with preparations and floral ar-rangements for the Year 12 Formal every year that I’ve been here; first with Robyn Whitney and more recently with Colleen Best. I think we’ve made a pretty good team. THANKS Colleen. I’ve made lasting friendships here; for that I’m grateful and look forward to continuing with those. I’m always up for a coffee or lunch with any of you….providing I’m in the country of course. Look after yourselves,Robyn

Captains’ MessageReflecting back on 2014, we can definitely say that we have had many wonderful and challenging ex-periences working with the staff and students of Lismore High. As the student leaders of 2014, we have been a part of many great changes, in par-ticular the re-introduction of prefects, who have worked with each faculty to build toward a bright-er future for our students. It has been an absolute honour to represent our school at this level, while developing greater leadership skills and now being able to take all that we have learnt from our expe-riences into the world as we depart from school.

Throughout the year our prefects have played a significant role in making all of the year’s proceed-ings possible with the staff, students and captain, inspiring the future ideas for our school. Sacha Borowski-Davies had the role of instilling strong, positive attitudes towards academic achieve-ments. Ebony Braddon worked towards promoting environmental awareness within the school. Both Tom McMahon and Taholo Renagi , prefects of CAPA and Music, have been outstanding in organ-ising and participating in such events as the 2014 CAPA ‘MADD’ night. Enthusiastically Cory Burton has encouraged the student body involvement in various sporting events. Welfare in our school has been in the care of Sarah Symonds, extending to our Indigenous welfare under the leadership of Caitlin Duroux. We have all been very grateful for all their insights and efforts throughout the year.

As Captains of Lismore High School we have been presented with many opportunities to represent and be a voice for our school in the community and wider regions. We have been a part of many fundraisers within our school, coordinated along-side our Student Representative Council, encour-aged the future of our school in Year 5 and 6 visits to the School and Open Night, and enthusiastically engaged in our school’s sporting carnivals. Locally we have shown our respect to Australian military servicemen of the past and present through our participation in both the Remembrance and AN-ZAC Day ceremonies, and particularly through our school choir’s long-standing inclusion in the Dawn Service. Locally we were also involved in the opening the Lismore Performing Arts Festi-val. An exceptional opportunity was offered to both Sharnee Fry and Hannah Sky in the form of a trip to Sydney in August; involving speaking with members of Parliament in the New South Wales Parliament house, and having the hon-our and privilege of having afternoon tea with

the New South Wales Governor, Her Excellency Marie Bashir.

Our Year would not have been so successful with-out all of the support and organisation of our school’s office ladies. We also owe thanks to all of our teachers, past and present, for being there to support and guide us through our year as stu-dent leaders, and our education throughout our six years of high school. Thank you to our Careers Advisor, Glen Jeffery, for all his continual enthusi-asm and reminders, inspiring our future outside of school. Thank you to our cleaners who have main-tained our classrooms and grounds, and endured the many messes we as students created. Keep-ing our energy levels on high, thankyou Wendy for all your catering in the canteen. To Ms Fraser and the ladies in the library, thank you for all that you provide, from literature to access to printing. It has been a privilege to work alongside Mr Brito, our Principal, to plan for the future of our school and be the best leaders that we could be in 2014. His visions for our school are truly inspir-ing and should be appreciated by all those who are currently and will be a part of this school in the future. It was sad to see Mr Kitching retire this year, although his continual support to our school has been unwavering. His successor to the position of Deputy Principal, Mr Meehan, has worked tirelessly this year and has already seen our school making great improvements.

Most importantly to our year group, we cannot go without thanking all of Mrs Graham’s efforts throughout our time here at Lismore High School. She has provided us more support than we can ever thank her for. Our time here would not have been the same without her dedication to caring for us as a year group and leadership team; help-ing us develop and grow into young adults. We could not have had a better teacher to take over the role of Year Advisor from Mrs Hobbs. Year 7 Report The students in year 7 and I have at least 1 thing in common this year and that is we are going through their first year of high school together. We are finding out a lot about how to deal with the eve-ryday struggles that high school presents as well as all those personal, social and cultural issues that we need to deal with. So far I think we are going OK... When we first met I asked year 7 to work with me in becoming the best year group that Lismore High school has. I think that we are get-ting to that point and as we are the biggest year group at school I think we have a great chance of achieving this. The little things like wearing cor-rect uniform, being at class on time and show-ing respect in class is slowly coming together. We are a year group full of positive students with talents in all things from academic work to sports and I must say that we have the best bunch of handball players in the school. We are a fairly cohe-sive group, all students try to get on with each other and a few are still finding which group suits them. This takes time and I’m sure that by the start of next year we will be making great progress together. We have seen some changes in class groups with students moving in and out of classes so we can try to achieve a “best fit” for every-one. Our students are given every opportu-nity to prove themselves and to show the work ethic and commitment necessary to achieve their best. So far everyone is trying their best. Our year group has also had opportunities outside of the classroom to attend excursions to Ballina Waterslide, Dorroughby Field centre, Rocky Creek Dam and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Base. On these excursions year 7 has shown re-spect for the places they have been to, the people that have presented to them and to the staff and other students on excursions. It has been enjoy-able being part of these excursions with year 7. Next year will bring its own issues as Year 7 are no longer the youngest students at school. I’m sure they will be out to impress our new Year 7 group and show them how we do things at Lismore High School. AYear7PerspectivePrimary school was over and the next step of life had just begun. Lismore High School wel-comed students from a variety of schools and backgrounds once again this year, comprising the Year 7 classes of 2014. Timetables were dis-tributed and we learned our way around school hastily, developing new friendships and getting to know our wonderful teachers for the year.

We settled in rather fast, with (for many), hand-ball games at lunch and recess being one of the best ways to gather friends and understand our fellow classmates. The teachers provided ad-vice and support allowing us to settle in with ease and understand the school rules, mottos and ways. When these were accomplished, the days rocketed by, with work standards and qual-ity being heightened along with the usual behav-ioural expectations. It was clear what we had to do and that we were no longer in primary school.Sporting Carnivals and other school com-petitions or events allowed us to show-case our talents to the whole school.

The terms progressed and our fresh faces merged into the crowd. Assignments were handed out in hefty amounts (dozens more than primary school) and returned com-pleted in a couple of weeks for marking. Frequent offers to head over to the Southern Cross University Lismore Campus, whether they be for science, art, climate change or a taste of univer-sity as well as a display of what it offers, proved to be exciting, thought-provoking and informative.

Within the first year in high school, several doors and life-opportunities have opened as well as the creation of enduring friendships. The times changed as we were no longer the eldest on the block, but the youngest again (Fresh and shiny we were). The teachers completed our induction and assimilation, making it easy and we certainly owe them thanks for the cracking times we had in Year Seven. The year has been stocked with highs and lows as well as being stuffed with mem-ories we will keep for life. So, bring it on 2015!By Alexander Wardrop

Year8areawesome!The year started with a splash at the swimming carnival. Year 8 participated with enormous amounts of enthusiasm. This level of pride is what is becoming the norm for this spirited cohort of students. Term 1 ended with the cross-country at Ballina which was heaps of fun for everyone. In term 2, selected students participated in the On-wards and Upwards program. The students devel-oped a design concept to better our community. The students then developed presentations which they presented to Minister for parliament Thomas George and the Mayor Jenny Dowell. The students gained some outstanding insight to how a council proposal works and were given valuable feedback.

Term 2 also saw all of the interschool sports drag most of the kids out of the classroom and onto the sports arena. Students were involved in most sports including: AFL, Rugby League, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Baseball and Cricket. A special mention has to go to the Year 8 girls who propped up our hockey teams, they not only played key roles in the under 15’s but were key players in the opens girl side. Who can forget Jakira Toniello who seemed to play every sport for both the girls and boys teams?

In 2014, Year 8 had the opportunity to apply for Gold cards for the first time. As a result they were able to go on reward excursions such as the By-ron Bay trip, V8 Supercars and the shopping trip to Robina. Many Year 8s took advantage of these extra reward excursions and had heaps of fun. At the end of term 3 most of Year 8 went on a team-building excursion to Currumbin wildlife sanctu-ary and participated in the High Ropes course. This was a fantastic trip that allowed the kids to get out of their comfort zones and work together.

On Friday the 15th of November, Year 8 embarked on an adventure to Movieworld. This excursion was a reward for all of their hard work through-out the year. It was a great way for the students to bond with each other. They faced some fears together by going on exhilarating rides. The sup-port they showed for each other was testament to their character. All of the students had a great day and represented Lismore High School with pride.

Overall Year 8 has had a fantastic year. There have been some ups and downs, however this cohort is very tolerant of difference and are becoming more and more supportive of each other. I am looking forward to next year, the kids are starting to make decisions about what subjects they like and want to do, which leads to working out what they want to do post school. It is an exciting age as they are maturing and becoming adults. Thank you for such a fun 2014 and next year will be even bigger.

Year 9 - Year Advisor’s Report

2014 has been a time of change for Year 9; we have lost a few of our number who have moved away from the area, and gained some new faces to add to the diversity of our group. While some challenges have arisen from these changes, learning to be adapta-ble and resilient is an important part of growing up.

As the year group moved into Stage 5 at the be-ginning of the year, they were able to follow an educational line more of their choosing. Students’ choice of elective subjects reflect their individual skills and interests more specifically. While some were already clear on what academic direction to take, many are still exploring their talents. It is important that students at this stage choose subjects which demonstrate their interests and abilities, rather than their friendships; making good choices is a sign of developing maturity.

Year 9 deserves congratulations for their NA-PLAN examination results for 2014, which showed that they exceeded the state growth in writ-ing, spelling and numeracy across the year. The students who completed the test to the best of their ability contributed to this result, and they are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Southern Cross University’s incursion, Unibound, was well attended by Year 9 students who enjoyed participating in a range of activities introducing them to university life. Alongside their peers from schools all over the region, they were entertained by a lecture, a laboratory visit, and live music per-formances. After a tour of the University grounds, they feasted on pizza before returning to school. For students who have never entertained the idea of attending university, this event can increase awareness of the different paths available to them.

The Student Development lessons which com-menced this year have provided students with a range learning experiences based around wellbe-ing. Issues around bullying, resilience, identity, self-image, appropriate use of social media, risk-taking, respect, and communication are some of

the areas which were covered. Students werethen given the opportunity to create their own texts in the form of videos, and produced some excellent resources for younger students.Year 9 thoroughly enjoyed their Year Advisor’s excursion to Wet ‘n Wild on the Gold Coast in mid-November. The weather was fantastic, and there was a really friendly and supportive at-mosphere amongst those who attended. Eve-ryone behaved themselves admirably and rep-resented their School with good-natured pride.

While many students at this stage are embrac-ing their educational experiences, for some Year 9 has been a difficult time; making deci-sions involving friends can be tricky to negoti-ate, and developing better communication and interpersonal skills is vital for improving self-control and confidence. As they enter Year 10, it is important for students aiming to go on to further study or training to consider their pri-orities, and settle into a regular routine of study.

There is a good support network at Lismore High School, for all students, and they are encour-aged to identify potential mentor teachers who can help support and guide them through their senior years. Taking advantage of all the oppor-tunities and support that our School offers will ensure every student reaches their potential.

Year 10 has had a busy year this as it was their fi-nal year as juniors. They started off the year with Ms Templeton at the helm but then Mr Scott Al-len took over as their year advisor. He led them through a year of important decisions which would impact on their future directions and career paths.

Work Experience gave many students a taste of what it would be like in the work force and many chose placements that would, in fact, give them career options. Students chose to go to placements with veterinarians, law firms, primary schools, libraries, bookshops and a various places in the retail and hospitality industry. Experience like this is invalu-able to students and as a school we appreciate the businesses and industries that accept our students.

Subject selections for the senior years were high on the agenda with many asking if they would at-tempt the more challenging subjects. Others were deciding whether to follow a TVET course of action or should subjects be chosen that involved travel to the other Rivers College Schools. Many students demonstrating that had thought about their career paths and their futures as they nominated courses.

Peer Support training is an important aspect of Year 10. Students are expected to undertake the training then if they have an aptitude for Peer Support they are then enlisted to work with and be Peer Leaders for the Year 6 students that come into the school on Orientation Days as well as be the Peer Leaders for those students when they start in Year 7 in 2015.

As part of becoming a senior all Year 10 students must complete the All My Own Work course. This course is online and focuses on plagiarism. Students are taught about what is required in the senior years and that work produced must be their own. This will then stand them in good stead for any future study at a tertiary level where all work must be referenced and cited correctly.

However, it has not all been hard work as the year finished off with a team building excur-sion to the Tallebudgera Sport and Recreation Camp. Here students had fun solving puzzles, high ropes, indoor cricket and water activities.

Ms Pruess will now lead this energetic group of students into their final years of high school as I take up a permanent position at Rich-mond River High School. I have enjoyed my time with this year group and can honestly say that I would have loved to see them through.

Year 11 has been a busy year as the students grappled with what it took to become a sen-ior. They studied hard and realised that there was a huge leap between Year 10 and Year 11. By the end of the Year 11 year they had set-tled into a routine of hard work and study. The election of the school leadership team was the first inkling that the Final Year had ar-rived. The leadership team have lots of plans and have al-ready made a difference, revamping the Peer Sup-port program and running Presentation Day. The team are establishing pride in the school by wear-ing their blazers and encouraging the junior school to wear the proper uniform, both by demonstrating how smart it can be and helping in enforcement.

The whole year has enjoyed the extra responsibil-ity that comes with being members of the senior school. They have been busily settling into their

Year 12 studies setting their goals and clear-ly mapping out their path to achieving them. They quickly took ownership of the com-mon room, establishing their own positions and changing them to their requirements.

With the closing of the canteen for a few days the seniors saw this as an opportunity to do some fund raising selling food and drinks, much to the appreciation of the rest of the school.

Farewell Year 12This year’s Year 12 have been characterised by their social orientation, whether it be running the school canteen, fundraising or being part of community service. Many students in this year group have made significant contributions to sporting, cultur-al and academic areas. They have worked well to-gether and organised many activities for the school.

The most recent being the Ice Bucket Chal-lenge, where staff enjoyed their moment as they tipped icy cold buckets of water over this group. We would like to thank Woolworths, Lis-more Square for their support with this fundrais-ing activity. I would also like to remind Year 12 that on this day staff were once again crowned champions in the annual basketball game.

Thursday 18th September, was our fi-nal last day together. We boarded a bus at 7.15 am and travelled to Dreamworld where we went on many stomach churning rides and we enjoyed the challenge of Laser Tag.

Early to rise again on Friday morning for the an-nual Year 12 breakfast with family members and Lismore High staff. We ate many hash browns, croissants and bacon and eggs. Then onto the final assembly where tears of joy were shed, and a new beginning is about to commence.

I have enjoyed my time immensely as Year Ad-viser. I would like to thank the parents of Year 12 students for your support over the past 6 years. To Year 12 students I congratulate you on your efforts and your drive to succeed, whether it be on the sporting field, academically or culturally. Best wishes Year 12 in your future adventures.

SRC REPORT – LENS -2014

2014 has been a great year and the SRC have been busy.

We ran a cake stall on Valentine’s Day. We baked cakes, slices, brownies and oth-er goodies, raising money for the SRC kitty.

The SRC also made monetary contribution to help out the LHS Breakfast Club – a valuable part of our school atmosphere. To continue our school beautification; the SRC donated some lovely flowers to be planted in our garden.

A BBQ to commemorate the NAIDOC Day celebra-tion was held for the students and special guests.

We held days to support the worthwhile or-ganisations of ‘Jeans for Genes Day’, rais-ing $200, and “Chopper Day”, also rais-ing $200 for this awesome local cause.

On the MADD Night, the SRC ran a BBQ, sell-ing both sausage sandwiches and drinks. The Senior Executives of the SRC attended the North Coast Region SRC Conference in Kyo-gle which allowed us the opportunity to net-work with the other SRC’s around the area and find out what they are doing for their schools.

Plans are underway to follow on with our school beautification project – creating a special “Riv-ers” themed mural throughout the school. At this stage (September) we have not been able to run a social yet, but we are planning on having a combined social with Kadina High School soon.

On Thursday 21st August our four SRC Leaders went along to the Regional SRC conference which was held at Kyogle High School. Chloe, Tahlecia,

Grace and Mitch-ell had a great time networking with SRC members from other schools – stu-dents came from as far afield as South Grafton and Wool-goolga for this excit-

ing annual event. Our students looked splendid in their blazers and really stood out – it made me (Ms Amy Chapman SRC Coordinator) proud when other teachers commented to me about what great ambassadors they are. Chloe represented us exceptionally well when she spoke as SRC Presi-dent to a large audience about what has been happening in our school.

CyrilLovettMemorialPrizeforLeadershipCyril Lovett was School Captain at LHS in 1935 and was one of the men to enlist in the army for WWII from Lismore. He died in action in 1941 aged 24. This prize, which was donated by the Lismore Sub Branch of the R.S.L., was traditionally presented by Mr Roy Lovett who lost his life in a car accident in 2000.

He made generous donations to the LHS Library and had a keen interest in all aspects of the school throughout his life. He died in 1932.

He worked as a scientist for all of his working life and as a memorial decided to dedicate this ward to a student from LHS (Year 12) for dedica-tion, interest and excellence in Science studies.

for Year 10 EnglishThis prize is for a boy attaining the high-est standard in English at the Year 10 level.Hector Harrison attended Lismore High School from 1932 - 1934. He was an accomplished swimmer and surf life-saver, and devoted much of his time to voluntary ambulance du-ties. Hector lost his life during WWII in 1944.

Christie Balzar was educated at Lismore High School and after service in the C.M.F. he entered the R.A.A.F. in July 1940 at the age of 21. On com-pletion of Elementary Flying Training in Australia he was posted to Canada in December 1940 into the No. 1 Course under the Empire Air Training Scheme. His ‘Wings’ were obtained in May 1941, after which he was posted to an Operational Train-ing Unit at Bicester England. Christie commenced Operational Flying in September 1941 and was subsequently reported missing from an operation on the 15th October 1941. He wqas later reported as having been shot down off the Fresian Islands.

Allan Rutherford was educated at Lismore High School and enlisted in the R.A.A.F. in August 1941. After recieving Initial Flying Training in Australia he was posted to Canada under the Empire Training Scheme and recieved his ‘Wings’ and Commisiion in September 1942. He was subsequently retrained in Canada as a flying instructor and then posted to an Advanced Operational Training Station in Nova Scotia where he was killed in an accident on the 17th September 1943, while flying a Mosquito Bomber.

As Taholo is a talented singer andcan bee seen in the photgraph it was indeed a work of art. entertainer who was selected to sing and perform at last year’s School Spectacular and this year’s School Spectacular. The event is ranked as the biggest extravaganza of its kind in the world. Taholo should be very proud of his achievements.

Sports AwardsTheHouseSystematLHS

Lismore High School decided to introduce the house System for sporting and debating competitions in 1927. These houses were named by a pupil committee known as the Lismore High School Union.

AspinallHouseAspinall House (blue) was named after Dr Arthur Martell Aspinall who came to the Richmond area in 1912. He graduated M.B.Ch.M. at Sydney University in 1911. He first went to Nimbin then to Lismore. All of his brothers and a sister graduated in medicine. Having no children of his own he took under his care the students of Lismore High School. To encourage leadership combined with scholastic qualities he pre-sented for some years the ‘Dr Robert Aspinall Memorial Medal’ in memory of a brother killed in the war.

HarveyHouseHarvey House (yellow) was named after Mr Robert Harvey, BA, and the first Headmaster of Lis-more High School in 1920 when the school had around 200 students. He was part of the move from the Keen Street building to the North Lismore site. Recognising the importance of a Library he set about providing one, persuading many citizens to contribute, so that by 1922 he had over 1200 books. He was an outstanding Headmaster, city alderman and a fine cricketer. His name is perpetu-ated in the House and in the Harvey Library which the Governor opened on September 10, 1924.

OakesHouseOakes House (red) took its name from Mr Walter Frank Oakes, an engineering contractor who built bridges in Lismore, Casino and many other places. His three sons were primarily educat-ed by their mother while the family camped at various bridge sites in the bush. Naturally Mr Oakes was interested in a High School for Lismore and all his boys were ultimately educated there. As public spirited citizens he and his friend Dr Aspinall joined the P & C and worked for the young school. Mr Oakes was an early president of the P & C and a generous benefactor. He died in 1934.

RichmondHouseRichmond House (green) was named after the river. In 1828 when a great drought was in its second year, exciting explorations were afoot to see if better pastures could be found. On 26th August Captain Rous anchored the Rainbow in eight fathoms of water at the mouth of a river six leagues south of Cape Byron. He named the river after his brother’s friend Charles, fifth Duke of Richmond. Rous himself was the second son of the Earl of Stradbroke and his name has been given to Rous County in which we live, thus perpetuating the name Henry John Rous, discoverer of the mouth of the Richmond River.

Northern Rivers Zone CarnivalsThe Northern Rivers Zone holds three competitive carnivals each year. There are eleven schools in our zone – Alstonville, Kadina, Casino, Richmond River, Maclean, Kyogle, Bonalbo, Woodenbong, Evans River and Nimbin.SwimmingThe Northern Rivers Zone carnival and the North Coast swimming carnival were held at the Lismore Memorial Pool this year. Fifteen students represented Lismore High at Zone level. The following stu-dents were placed at this carnival and went on to represent the Northern Rivers Zone: Nicole Webster, Lachlan Zimmerman, Talisien Hooper and Erin Miller. This was Aaron Dobbs and Tim Webster’s final year competing at school level. They have performed extremely well in the pool and have successfully represented Lismore High School since Year 7.

CrossCountryCarnivalWhat a great day! Congratualtions to the 189 students who attended the carnival. Weather conditions were perfect and the serious competitors made short work of the 6.2km course. Overall, around 75% of students took on the course this year with only a small number choosing to walk the entire distance; an excellent effort by all concerned. Once again the day concluded with games and beach activities with all students appreciating the variety of undertakings in a relaxing and enjoyable environment. Once again Lismore High School developing a positive profile in the wider community.

AthleticsCarnivalAnother successful day was had by all at our annual Athletics Carnival. The weather was good, except for a few small showers, but these just cooled the students down. Attendance was excellent and par-ticipation was high. Novelty events were very popular and races taken very seriously. It was a pleasure to see our school’s top athletes compete. The Year 12’s ran a tasty canteen as well as dressing up and competing. A fantastic day was had by all.

North Coast Sport Representatives

NAME: Hannah Sky YEAR: 12 SPORT: Hockey

Hannah trialled and was suc-cessful in gaining a position in the North Coast Hockey team in March this year. She trav-elled to Bathurst in late May to compete against five other regions. The team came 7th overall after defeating Sydney North 2-0 in a playoff for 7th/8th place.

NAME: Jessica SteeleYEAR: 12SPORT: Netball

Jessica gained a position in the North Coast team after trialling in Grafton in April. The team travelled to Coffs Harbour in late May and were successful in winning seven games over the four days of competition. The North Coast Netball team came 4th overall.

Both Hannah and Jessica have represented Lis-more High over the past six years in a number of sporting teams. They are talented sports-women and demonstrate a great deal of skill in a range of sports. Well done girls, we wish you the best on the sporting field in future years.

NAME: Caitlin Hammond YEAR: 11 SPORT: Basketball

Chloe and Caitlin are both very skillful basketball players. They were selected in the North Coast team early in Term 1 and travelled to Wollongong to compete in the NSW CHS Basketball Champion-ships. Unfortunately the North Coast team didn’t win a game. However, both girls played extreme-ly well and were able to direct play in all games.

NAME: Jakira Toniello YEAR: 8 SPORT: Softball and Cricket

Jakira trialled and was success-ful in gaining a position in both Softball and Cricket North Coast teams in Term 4, 2013.

The beginning of Term 1 was extremely busy for Jakira on the sport-ing field. Jakira travelled to Nowra on the South Coast where the North Coast Cricket team played four games in all. They won all games and ended up coming third overall.

A week later Jakira travelled to Tamworth to compete at the NSW CHS Softball Cham-pionships. The North Coast team achieved fourth overall after playing eight games.

Well done Jakira, for being a part of both North Coast teams.

He recently trialled for the NSW U 16’s All School Team. From forty students Thomas was selected in the NSW U 16’s All Schools side in the defensive mid-field position. He travelled to Ad-elaide in mid-August to compete at the National Hockey Titles. He is co-captain of our Lismore High School team, sharing this position with his brother, Sam.Thomas plays Hockey for Coraki in an under 15’s mixed team, Reserve Grade and A Grade. This year he was selected for the North Coast Repre-sentative side and Captained the U’15s NSW team to victory against Victoria at the National Titles over in Perth.Thomas has natural ability on the sporting field and great leadership skills and he inspires people around him. He has earned a North Coast CHS Sporting ‘Blue’ for Hockey.

Trent has been a member of the North Coast Athletics and Cross Country teams for the past four years.This year he placed first at the CHS Athletics in AWD 16-19 Javelin and third in duscus.He was the North Coast Athletics Senior AWD Boy Champoin with a first in 16-19 800MD run and Dis-cus. Second in 100m, 200m, Shot Put and Javelin. Third in Long Jump. Trent also placed first at the North Coastr Cross Country and was named AWD Senior Boy Age Champion.His Impressive performances, excellent sports-manship and hardworking nature has earned him a North Coast Sporting ‘Blue’. Trent is a worthy re-cipient of the AWD Sportsperson of the Year.
