Sleepwalkers, Beware!
Have you ever seen a sleepwalker in action? People walking in their sleep are
totally unaware of their activities and surroundings and sometimes wake up to find
themselves in a life-threatening situation. I grew up hearing the story of my cousin
who, while sleepwalking as a very young boy, left the house in the middle of the
night and scrambled up to the top of a nearby windmill. Fortunately, his mother heard
the door open and was able to climb up and retrieve him before he fell.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11, Paul warns us of the danger of sleepwalking – not
physically, but spiritually. The Message renders verse 6 this way – “So let’s not
sleepwalk through life like those others.” Spiritual sleepwalkers go through life
oblivious to the impact of their environment and conduct. Eventually, they may
awaken to find themselves in a precarious position, wondering how they got there
and how to get out of it.
Paul gives two instructions to avoid such a predicament. First, be alert. Be aware
of your environment – how it shapes and molds who you are. Watch out for Satan’s
deceptive tactics – tricking us into following him by mimicking God. Look down the
road to the ultimate consequences of your choices, asking the question, “Will this
choice bring me closer to God or take me further from Him?”
Second, be self-controlled. Once you determine the godly choice, then hold in
check your rebellious desires to do anything otherwise.
Don’t get caught sleepwalking through life. Remain alert and self-controlled so
that in the end “…we may live together with him” (verse 10).
