There’s Elvis on the cover of his new box set. His buxom acoustic guitar swings freely as his right hand clutches a micro- phone. The ink-black hair, the sideburns and, of course, the snarl — all there. Legs flexed at his knees, the King is forcing his toes, inside white shoes, to go impossibly en pointe. Eyes closed, the young buck rock ’n’ roller looks ecstatic, like a Pentecostal preacher about to snatch a lost soul from the gaping maw of Sa- tan. Billy Graham and Nijinsky, you ain’t got nuthin’ on this Mississippi hick. Meanwhile, the King of Rock ’n’ Roll’s one-time son- in-law — the King of Pop, Michael Jackson — is strutting across the silver screen. Michael is taking a posthumous star turn in ‘‘This Is It,’’ the movie documenting the rehearsals for his never-to-be comeback concerts. In the film Michael, oddly, eschews his signature moonwalk during ‘‘Billie Jean.’’ No matter. At age 50, Michael still has impossible joints in his bones. During ‘‘Thriller,’’ ‘‘Beat It’’ and his other hits, Michael glides like a supernatural marionette — knees, elbows, hands, feet, ankles, shoulders all seem to be independent electrons gracefully or ecstati- cally orbiting the protons of his body. Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, you got no- thin’ on this guy from Gary, Indiana. Round one — round one in this dead celeb battle for the title of Greatest Entertainer of All Time — goes to . . . Michael Jackson! Of course, the estates of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson didn’t plan it this way, this posthumous battle of legacies. No one is surprised the Elvis estate has found yet another excuse to repackage Pres- ley’s music. The new four-CD set, ‘‘Elvis 75 — Good Rockin’ Tonight’’ (due out Dec. 8), is touted as celebrating the 75th centennial of Presley’s birth. And no one is surprised the Jackson estate took the extensive film foot- age of Michael’s rehearsals for his string of London comeback concerts and fashioned them into a visual memorial. But the result is this: The King of Rock ’n’ Roll and the King of Pop are once again bat- tling for pop culture supremacy. Is ‘‘Thriller’’ a ‘‘better’’ song and video than ‘‘Jailhouse Rock’’ and that choreo- graphed, proto-video that Elvis filmed for that hit? Is ‘‘Billie Jean’’ ‘‘better’’ than ‘‘Hound Dog’’? Fans of either king will pas- sionately argue their case. After seeing ‘‘This Is It,’’ I score a big knock-out for Michael. Yes, Elvis the Pelvis pioneered rock ’n’ roll’s hippie-hippie shake. Yes, James Brown’s insane showmanship and Mick Jag- ger’s kinetic energy cemented the idea that pop music can be and should be a physical as well as a sonic medium — that any art form so obsessed with sex damn well better be of the body as well as about the body. But no one — not Soul Brother No. 1, not Mick, not Elvis, not Prince — ever moved like Michael. Watching ‘‘This Is It’’ after Jackson spent so many years on the tabloid stage instead of a concert stage, I was re- minded how much Michael’s body is an in- strument. His dance steps and body movements communicated something beyond the showy splits of the Godfather of Soul, Jagger’s manic rooster steps or Jim Morri- son’s spastic shaman twitches. Watching Michael, I thought of a line by poet William Butler Yeats: ‘‘O body swayed to music, o brightening glance, how can we know the dancer from the dance?’’ Jackson’s comeback concerts were primed to be a mega-spectacle. From the glimpses in the film, Michael and his band, dancers, sets and special effects would have rivaled the al- pha tours of the Rolling Stones, U2 and Pink Floyd. And at the center of it all was a singing dancing-machine/showman who could pen a sonic groove that would have had Beethoven moonwalking. Elvis, hand over your crown. Rick de Yampert is The Daytona Beach News-Journal’s entertainment writer. He can be reached at rick.deyampert @news-jrnl.com A s you sit on the couch this morning nursing your turkey hangover, it’s as good a time as any to think about something you probably forgot while you were filling your face with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes: Thanksgiving is about giving thanks. This week, let’s take a look at what I was thankful for in 2009. PPP The implosion of ‘‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’’: Well guys, you made it five long, interesting seasons. But as it turns out, when you start becoming a ‘‘TV family’’ your ‘‘real family’’ starts to deterio- rate. I admit, in the beginning I enjoyed this show. But when life became more about Kate’s hair and Jon’s Ed Hardy jeans, it grew less likable and more in- furiating. And while I feel bad for little Mady, Cara, Alexis, Leah, Hannah, Aaden, Joel and Collin, perhaps they can get more attention now that their parents have one less thing on their plate. What’s that? Both Jon and Kate have new projects in the works? Oh well, good luck with the nannies, kids. Taylor Swift: Did anyone have a better year than Taylor Swift? She hosted one of the funniest ‘‘Saturday Night Live’s’’ in re- cent memory, won a slew of awards including Country Mu- sic Association’s Entertainer of the Year and began dating the werewolf from ‘‘Twi...’’ ‘‘Yo Tay- lor, I’m really happy for you and I’m a let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time.’’ ‘‘Community’’: NBC’s sitcom about a disgraced lawyer who goes back to community college is ut- terly brilliant. It’s a true ensem- ble comedy featuring ‘‘Talk Soup’s’’ Joel McHale, a thank- God-he’s-funny-again Chevy Chase, and Don Glover, who some of you might know from the comedy troupe and Internet sensation, Derrick Comedy. And being paired up with ‘‘Parks and Recreation,’’ ‘‘The Office’’ and ‘‘30 Rock,’’ has made Thursday nights Must See TV once again. Surviving: This year we lost a ton of celebrities. The deaths of DJ A.M., Bea Arthur, David Carra- dine, Dom DeLuise, Ed McMa- hon, Farrah Fawcett, John Hughes, Michael Jackson, Nata- sha Richardson, Walter Cron- kite, etc., made 2009 a tough year to be famous. But it’s almost over. Breathe easy, Earnest Borgnine, Mickey Rooney and Phyllis Diller. It’s almost over. John Noble: The little-known Aus- sie theater actor might be recog- nized as Denethor in Peter Jackson’s ‘‘Lord of the Rings’’ series. But now he’s certainly making a name for himself as the mentally unstable Walter Bishop in Fox’s ‘‘Fringe.’’ Typ- ical Walter quote: ‘‘Peter, you’ve been abducted. Of course you need crepes.’’ Zombies/Vampires: It was certainly the year of the undead as blood suckers and brain eaters alike made a huge impact in enter- tainment. From mega hits like HBO’s ‘‘True Blood’’ to the adap- tation of the ‘‘Twilight’’ series for the big screen, you couldn’t miss these guys if you tried. Even video games like ‘‘Call of Duty: World at War’’ featured a special Nazi zombie level acces- sible only when you beat the game. Jane Lynch and the cast of ‘‘Glee’’: This Fox hit is by far the Fanboy pick for best show of the season. From its hip song numbers to its relatively unknown cast, the show has few detractions. And perhaps the series’ brightest star is Lynch’s Sue Sylvester. As a cruel, manipulative and some- times racist cheerleading coach, Lynch commands the screen with lines like, ‘‘I don’t trust a man with curly hair. I can’t help but picture little birds laying sulfurous eggs in there, and it disgusts me.’’ We love you Sue Sylvester. But that’s just how Fanboy ‘‘C’s’’ it. [email protected] Accent writer Tom Iacuzio scours the pop culture uni- verse for the latest in enter- tainment news. Fanboy can be found online as Fanboy 2.0 at go386.com/fanboy Tom Iacuzio FANBOY Associated Press file photos Two dead kings of music are in the spotlight once again: Michael Jackson, above, performing in 1993, and Elvis Presley, below, performing in 1956.
