The Universi- ty of Central Florida will perform a concert ver- sion of the Gilbert and Sullivan op- eretta ‘‘The Pirates of Penzance’’ at the News- Journal Cen- ter this week- end. Tom Iacuzio FANBOY H appy Holidays, everybody! Yeah, I know, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. But if it ain’t too early for every store I go into, then it ain’t too early for me. Did you know that this year ‘‘Frosty the Snowman’’ is 40 years old? Neither did I. But as it turns out it’s true, and Fanboy is celebrating with a big ole DVD giveaway. This Christmas, Classic Media is putting all your favorites together in one big box set. Along with ‘‘Frosty,’’ ‘‘The Original Christmas Classics Limited Keepsake Edition,’’ at right, contains six more of the most beloved holiday TV specials of all time, including the Rankin/Bass classics ‘‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’’ ‘‘Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’’ and ‘‘The Little Drummer Boy.’’ It even comes with a bonus music CD of some great holiday tunes. So here’s the deal Fanboy readers. I’ve got three of these sets to give away. And since these shows are some of my favorite holiday memories, I want to hear some of yours. I’m giving you guys until midnight Dec. 6 to e-mail me your favorite holiday memories. And remember, this is Fanboy you’re writing to. I don’t want to hear about the time you all got together and sang carols by the fire. I’d rather hear about the time your drunk Uncle Earl burned down the Christmas tree. My three favorite memories will each get a ‘‘Christmas Classics’’ box set. To enter, e-mail me at [email protected] or write to Fanboy’s Christmas Memories, The Daytona Beach News-Journal, 901 6th St., Daytona Beach, FL 32117. PPP A while ago, we reported that Ste- ven Spielberg and Will Smith were working on doing a reboot of the Ko- rean film, ‘‘Old Boy.’’ Well thanks go out to the film’s original production studio, Mandate, who reportedly won’t sell the rights to DreamWorks. To get back at all of us, Will Smith is now setting his sights on a remake of ‘‘Flowers for Algernon.’’ PPP Production will reportedly begin next month on a live action/CG (think ‘‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’’) ‘‘Yogi the Bear’’ film. Anna Faris is set to play a docu- mentary filmmaker working in Jelly- stone National Park. Perhaps more interesting are the possible voices for Yogi and his best pal, Boo Boo: Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake. PPP I love bringing you news of the fail- ure of ‘‘The Jay Leno Show’’ and this week brings the juiciest tidbit yet. In the 18-49 age range, (Leno’s target market) the NBC prime-time talk show was beaten out by 10 other pro- grams including ‘‘20/20,’’ ‘‘Law & Or- der’’ and a ‘‘SpongeBob SquarePants’’ special on Nickelodeon. Keep up the good work, Jay. PPP If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, head over to the Florida Hotel and Convention Center Saturday and Sunday for EyeCon’s ‘‘True Blood’’ Convention. In addition to typical fare like Q&A- sessions and memorabilia sales, the convention will feature Saturday night’s ‘‘Fangbanger’s Ball,’’ a mas- querade style event with members of the ‘‘True Blood’’ cast. Actors from the HBO mega-hit slat- ed to attend include Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Nelsan Ellis (La- fayette Reynolds) and Allan Hyde (Go- dric). Event hours are 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $40 per day. Tickets to the ‘‘Fangbanger’s Ball’’ are $50. The Florida Hotel and Convention Center is at 1500 Sand Lake Road, Or- lando. For more information, visit eyeconfla.com or call 352-874-8500. [email protected] Accent writer Tom Iacuzio scours the pop culture universe for the lat- est in entertainment news. Fanboy can be found online as Fanboy 2.0 at go386.com/fanboy Courtesy photo THIS WEEKEND ‘Penzance’ offers free booty Fans of Gilbert and Sullivan can get a steal on one of the duo’s most popular comic operettas. The University of Central Florida Con- servatory Theatre will present a free concert production of ‘‘The Pirates of Penzance.’’ Performances will be at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sun- day at News-Journal Center, 221 N. Beach St., Daytona Beach. Seats are general admission and will be available on a first come, first served basis, but patrons are advised to make reservations by calling the UCF Conser- vatory Theatre box office at 407-823-1500. ‘‘The Pirates of Penzance’’ is the farci- cal story of an orphan named Frederic who accidentally becomes an apprentice to a pirate. He falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, but their plans go awry when Frederic discovers he is still indentured to his pi- rate lord. The operetta premiered on Dec. 31, 1879, in New York City. SATURDAY Austrians dance with Bernstein ‘‘West Side Story’’ will go east Europe when the Daytona Beach Symphony So- ciety opens its 58th season. SUNDAY Union brings a cappella gospel An a cappella contemporary gospel group will kickoff Trinity Presbyterian Church’s fifth annual Mosaic of Arts and Music concert series. Vocal Union’s music styles include jazz, traditional gospel and street corner doo-wop. The Vocal Union concert is part of a three-show season that also includes Handel’s ‘‘Messiah’’ with guest soloists from New York City at 4 p.m. December 6, tickets $10; and J.B. Scott’s Swingin’ Allstars at 7 p.m. Jan. 22, tickets $22. Sea- son tickets for the three concerts are $45 and are available at the church office.
