T his week, the Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the first Oscars to be given out this award season. Honorary Oscars were given to actress Lauren Bacall, B-movie director Roger Corman and cinematographer Gordon Willis. And while the real Oscars won’t be given out until March 7, in the spirit of giving (Like that Thanksgiving reference?) I thought I might let you in on some of my early Oscar favorites. PPP Best Supporting Actress Rachel Weisz, ‘‘The Lovely Bones’’: There are a few films that I think you will see a lot of come Oscar time. This story about a young girl who is murdered then watches over her family and her killer, is certainly one of them. Mo’Nique, ‘‘Precious’’: No film has gotten more buzz than ‘‘Pre- cious’’ and people are raving about Mo’Nique’s perform- ance as an abusive mother. Penelope Cruz, ‘‘Nine’’: Cruz is be- coming one of those actresses we see in the Oscar race every year. No reason to count her out this year. PPP Best Supporting Actor Zach Galifianakis, ‘‘The Hangover’’: The academy hardly ever nominates comedies but Gal- ifianakis’ performance was certainly one of the year’s best. Christoph Waltz, ‘‘Inglourious Bas- terds’: Considered a lock for the category, Waltz killed it as the film’s ‘‘Nat-zee’’ vil- lain. Richard Kind, ‘‘A Serious Man’’: Longtime character actor Kind really stepped out in the Coen Brothers’ latest film. PPP Best Actress Meryl Streep, ‘‘Julie & Julia’’: The annual celebration of Streep continues as the actress charmed audiences as Julia Child. Saoirse Ronan, ‘‘The Lovely Bones’’: As Susie Salmon, the 15-year-old Ronan, who al- ready has an Oscar nomi- nation for her role in ‘‘Atonement,’’ looks to further her young career. Hilary Swank, ‘‘Amelia’’: The gen- eral consensus is that movie was dull, the plot overbearing but the actress spot on. PPP Best Actor George Clooney, ‘‘Up In The Air’’: Welcome back, Clooney. After 2007’s ‘‘Michael Clayton,’’ Clooney is back as a business consultant who travels the world to fire people. Jeremy Renner, ‘‘The Hurt Locker’’: Renner was the brightest star in this word-of-mouth sensa- tion about urban combat in Iraq. Daniel Day-Lewis, ‘‘Nine’’: Page 37 in the Oscar rule book states: ‘‘In any given year, if Day-Le- wis acts, he must be nominat- ed.’’ (It doesn’t.) PPP Best Picture ‘‘The Lovely Bones’’: Not only do I expect ‘‘Bones’’ to be a hit come Oscar time, it’s Fan- boy’s most anticipated film of the year. ‘‘Up’’: Damn you, Pixar. First you rip my heart out with ‘‘WALL-E,’’ now you take it a step further with this tale of a widower who looks to fulfill the dream his wife left behind. ‘‘An Education’’: This will be the film that will make most of you say ‘‘never heard of it.’’ Every year there is one. This year it’s ‘‘An Education.’’ ‘‘Precious’’: The story of an over- weight, illiterate, pregnant teen who is invited to an alter- native school with a chance to change her life. Should be great despite Mariah Carey’s participation. PPP Don’t forget about Fanboy’s Christmas Memories DVD Giveaway. This Christmas, Classic Me- dia is putting all your favor- ites together in one big box set. ‘‘The Original Christmas Classics Limited Keepsake Edition,’’ contains some of the most beloved holiday TV spe- cials of all time, including ‘‘Frosty,’’ ‘‘Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer,’’ ‘‘Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’’ and ‘‘The Little Drummer Boy.’’ Since these shows are some of my favorite holiday mem- ories, I want to hear some of yours. I’m giving you guys un- til midnight Dec. 6 to e-mail me your favorite twisted holi- day memories. My three fa- vorites will get a ‘‘Christmas Classics’’ box set. To enter, e-mail me at tom. [email protected] or write to Fanboy’s Christmas Memories, The Daytona Beach News-Journal, 901 6th St., Daytona Beach, FL 32117. The national compe- tition concludes Monday. ‘‘Yeah, we are stoked about it,’’ guitarist-singer Tony Cu- chetti wrote in an e-mail to The News-Journal. The band also in- cludes his sister, singer Gina Cuchetti; his brother, drummer Chris Cuchetti; sax player Jaime Hollis and bassist-key- boardist Tobi Drentwett. The competition recently fea- tured the 12 bands performing at three showcase venues — in Austin, Chicago and Nashville. ‘‘Our showcase was in Nash- ville — it went great,’’ Tony Cu- chetti said. ‘‘We really rocked the house. We played at the famed 12th and Porter club and nailed it. The band was spot on. So now we’re in the final round and it all comes down to fan votes.’’ Music fans can check out all 12 finalists and vote online at landsharkrocks.com. The site features a video clip from Min- ister Theory’s Nashville per- formance, as well as a link to a studio recording of their song ‘‘Beautiful Life.’’ The site ac- cepts only one vote per e-mail address. According to the Web site, the winner will receive a ‘‘promo- tional prize pack valued at over $100,000.’’ The package includes a full page spread in Rolling Stone and a digital distribution deal, Cuchetti said. SuperStars holds finals Nineteen Volusia County stu- dents will compete in the final round of SuperStars of Volusia, an area performing arts talent competition. The competition is being sponsored by the Daytona Beach Symphony Society. The finals, which are open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. Sat- urday at Mainland High School Performing Arts Center, 1255 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach. Tickets are $20 adults, $10 stu- dents and are available at the door or by calling the symphony society office at 386-253-2901. For more information, call Rick Martorano at 386-679-5181 or go online at SuperStarsofVolusi- a.org. Proceeds from the competi- tion will benefit Volusia County public and private schools and performing arts programs. Finalists, which include both solo performers and ensembles, are: vocalists Leontyne Carter, Candice Cuchetti, Xavier Dur- den, Jonathan Foley, Daisy Lay- man, Amanda Melito, Michael Reyes, Nicole Danielle, Amy Smith, Juwan Williams and Tianna Stevens; instrumental- ists Tanya Conley (violin) and the Deltona Brass Quintet; pan- tomime artist Jeremy Hicks; and dance artists Papillion Dance Ensemble, Brittany Vas- ile, Jessica Giles, Katie Johnson and Kraze Dance Team. The first place winner will choose between $2,000 cash or 25 hours of recording studio time. The second place winner will choose between $1,500 cash or 15 hours in a recording studio. The third place winner will choose between $500 cash or 10 hours in a recording studio. If a winner is in dance or dramatic arts, the prize will be a professional photo or video session. Judges are five Central Flor- ida residents with professional performing experience in the arts and entertainment fields. — Rick de Yampert, Entertainment Writer Associated Press Meryl Streep, above, is a shoo-in for Best Actress for her turn as Julia Child in ‘‘Julie & Julia.’’ Tom Iacuzio FANBOY No Vox Pop Entertainment Writer Rick de Yampert is taking a break.
