LOGLINE A woman who lives forever is reluctantly connected to a clandestine group that she calls her family. Struggling with this alienating condition, she now faces the decisive days of her endless life.

SYNOPSIS Tourbillon is the story of Daniela, a woman who due to a secret genetic modification, has not aged since her twenties. Under the strict control of a clandestine group that she calls her family, Daniela spends her days recording her thoughts into old tapes; her only real connection to the outside world being a cryptic relationship with Adrian, her best friend. When a member of her group goes rogue, Daniela is caught up in a dangerous struggle for control over what she carries inside: the secret to living forever. Daniela now faces the decisive days of her endless life, as she is forced to save herself and learn the value of our time in this world.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT In Spain, your 18th birthday is an unspoken rite of passage into adulthood. There are no gradual steps, it is at 18 when you can drive a car, emancipate, drink alcohol and be sent to prison. On the day I turned 17, with one last year of childhood before me, this very obvious thought suddenly struck: time passes and we are relentlessly aging, marching slowly towards death. How could my friends go about life so carelessly, not haunted by this ticking clock? With every passing year this feeling grew stronger, and I began to understand that this very universal fear is at the foundation of our religions, our folklore, and our drive for technological innovation. We are, as a species, obsessed with our time in this world. Amidst growing public interest in life extension research, I set out to make Tourbillon. The film explores how we live with our mortality, and how our finite lives shape us, ultimately raising the question: do we really want to live forever?

PRODUCTION NOTES Tourbillon was shot guerrilla style in the streets of Los Angeles with a young and spirited cast and crew over the course of four summer weeks. The production was a challenge that brought out the best of both cast and crew. From filming inside a sweltering greenhouse in the middle of the desert in the hot month of August, to surprise encounters with the LAPD in various shooting locations in Downtown Los Angeles; the production of Tourbillon was an experience no filmmaker would forget.

CAST Tourbillon stars Cortney Palm (Sushi Girl) in a stirring performance as the main character, Daniela; with Chris Petrovski (Coldwater) and Valerie Venet (The Monkees) also portraying exceptionally layered characters. Cortney Palm (Daniela) Cortney Palm gained acclaim with her titular role in Sushi Girl (2012), starring alongside Mark Hamill and Tony Todd. The film was introduced at Comic Con and has garnered a cult following since. She also plays the role of Zoe in the comedy-horror Zombeavers (2015). Cortney is also known for her appearance in The Purge: Anarchy. She is currently shooting the horror film Death House.

Chris Petrovski (Markus) Chris Petrovski is known for Coldwater (2013) (SXSW Official Selection), All Cheerleaders Die (2013) and Madam Secretary (2014), starring Téa Leoni. Chris’ upcoming films are Sable and The Body Tree.

Valerie Venet (Mother) Valerie Kairys is known for Vanishing Point (1971), Family Products (2013) and Tourbillon (2014). Some audience members may remember her well from her recurring roles in the popular 60s show and band The Monkees.

FILMMAKERS Gene Ivery (Writer, Director, Producer) Gene is a director based in Los Angeles. With an uncompromising style, his films tackle cerebral themes that feature introspective character studies and strikingly restrained imagery, embracing nuance and ambiguity. Gene has directed and produced films that have played in festivals around the world, these include recognitions at Sci-Fi London, Zinebi, and Oxford Film Festival, among others. Marien Zagarella (Producer) Born in the Dominican Republic, Marien has worked as a producer in both Los Angeles and his home country. He has produced short films featuring Andy García (The Godfather III) and Julio Cedillo (The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada). After Tourbillon, Marien has been constantly on the move, writing the biopic of famed wrestler Jack Veneno and producing important television commercials.

Saman Yaghmai-Aledavoud (Producer) Saman is an Iranian-American director, producer and cinematographer who has been living in Los Angeles since 2003. Saman is currently working on the feature documentary Alam High School (2015) which will be narrated by Academy Award nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo. He is also on pre-production for his feature thriller Committed, starring Cortney Palm (Sushi Girl) and Ali Saam (Argo). Addy Khan (Producer) Addy Khan is a producer and cinematographer exploring new technologies and ways to tell a story. His films have been recognized by prestigious international festivals including the Oxford, Ann Arbor and Athens International Film Festival. He has a BFA in Cinema from Columbia College (and a few hundred dollars in late fees at the library). After spending the formative years of life in Los Angeles, Addy relocated to Dubai where he now runs Xperiment Media. Houtan Yaghmai (Co-Producer) Born in Tehran, Houtan Yaghmai is a Los Angeles-based attorney specializing in business immigration and entertainment law, advising independent filmmakers, artists, musicians and others. He is the co-founder of SamanMedia, an independent production company which focuses on films, commercials and music videos. Houtan has produced projects with Rob Schneider, Jason Priestley and comedian Max Amini. He is currently producing the documentary “Alam High School” which is to be narrated by Academy Award nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Daphne Qin Wu (Cinematographer) Daphne Wu is a freelance cinematographer specializing in features, commercials, and fashion films. She has shot 9 narrative features since her graduation from USC's School of Cinematic Arts 5 years ago. Her recent credits include Vice Versa (2015) with Isaiah Washington (Grey's Anatomy), and feature film Aimy in a Cage (2015), starring Crispin Glover (Back to the Future) and Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire, Enter the Void). Her approach to cinematography is to constantly innovate and challenge how a narrative can be translated visually onto the screen. She loves working with directors and producers that are just as fearless in their vision. Daphne on photographing Tourbillon: “I'm drawn to character-driven films so Tourbillon was a great experience. Going to set every day was about creating the intimacy between the audience, Daniela, and the city she navigates. In the film we are constantly following Daniela, handheld, so it was a very raw visual experience. We took some creative risks and I’m very happy with the look."

vot Gaus (Composer) vot Gaus spent his formative years in between Madrid and Los Angeles, and is now settled in London permanently where he plays music live and works on other film-related projects. vot Gaus on scoring Tourbillon: “The ultra-independent spirit of the film inferred my approach to the composition itself. I knew I had to create something unique that would rely on the clever and nuanced use of melody. Eventually I found that stripping down the music was the perfect approach for this film, which I feel is intimate and uncompromising. For a fully electronic soundtrack, this was no small task; polishing (and at times creating) these virtual instruments, which were all performed and arranged by myself.”
