Sailing 2019
We are looking for interest in putting team/s together for the following event, in Croatia, September 2019: In 2017 we had two Police crews attend and compete in the ICCA (International Coppers Cup Adriatica) a regatta held off the coast of Croatia. This is being held again (at another location on the Croatian coast). The event consists of about 25 to 30 teams of Police only (included retired and non-sworn) in chartered 45’ Bavaria yachts for racing over 6 days. Teams are mainly Europe based, however last year we rounded
out teams from Australia, Hong Kong, the UK and Ireland. It was a fantastic event, with post-race dock side socialising and other events arranged for partners not racing. Anyone keen to be involved can contact me through the usual channels. Happy to answer any questions. Contact Nick Davenport [email protected] |
NZPA Hockey Tournament
Northland hosted an excellent two days for this
event, the local Bluelight team were in
attendance and were well supported by all
participants. The muffins were exceptional! A
big thank you to our sponsors without their
support tournaments like these would not be
possible, the teams went away with a bag of
goodies each and some great spot prizes.

NZPA Tennis Champs
The Police tennis championships where held
over 2 days on March 14/15 at the
Whangaparoa Tennis Club, Whangaparoa,
Auckland.
The weather played ball with beautiful summer
weather over both days with temperatures on
court reaching around 30 degrees.
The year saw the introduction of 2 new trophies
for the men’s and women’s singles winners as
the previous ones were in need of upgrading.
New organiser Geoff KAYE from Rotorua Police
did a great job in sourcing trophies from a local
engraver and the woman’s trophy was renamed
the Wendy Wrigley Memorial trophy in
recognition of Wendy’s contribution to Police
tennis over many years.
Numbers where unfortunately down with a
number of late withdrawals and basic lethargy
from tennis players around the country. Only 3
women entered.
Next year the tournament will be returning to
the Bay of Plenty (Rotorua) where hopefully we
will see an improvement in the number of tennis
players attending as we know there are more
players out there.
Winners:
Mens singles winner: Richard Kapa (Auckland)
Runner Up: Mark Osbourne (Tauranga)
Women’s singles winner: Jo O’Connor
(Auckland)
Runner Up: Laura Peacock (Wellington)
Mens doubles winners: Richard Kapa/Glen
Japeth (Wellington)

NZ Police Touch
On Monday 25th March the NZ Men’s and
Women’s Police Touch teams met in
Palmerston North in preparation for the
2019 Inter Services Tournament hosted
by the Army at Linton.
First time in many years that Police Touch
had been invited back to compete at the
Inter Services tournament.
Expressions of interest were sent in and
selection meetings were held to go over
the paper CV’s and the teams were
confirmed from there.
There was a lot of interest which was great.
After an introduction get together to meet
& greet each other and remember names,
a light training was held and then off to
Linton for dinner & official opening.
The tournament format was a double
round robin, so Tuesday & Wednesday each team played each other.
On day 1 the Police men beat Navy and
lost to the Army and Airforce. Tyler Sintes
suffered a knee injury in the first 5
minutes of game one and was out for the
rest of the tournament – which was a huge
loss.
The women went through winning all 3
games. No-one came close, they were
skilful, sharp and showed the other three
forces how to play good structured touch.
Day 2 the men drew to Navy, beat the
Army (which was a coup as the Army
hadn’t been beaten for years) and also
beat the Airforce. The women once again
won all 3 games convincingly.
Day 3 Thursday was the semi and finals.
Women were ranked 1 and played
Airforce who were ranked 4. They beat
them 8-0.
The men were ranked 2nd and played the
Airforce who were ranked 3rd. Police lost
the game 13-11, in a try fest with literally no defence on either side.
The men then played the Navy for 3rd & 4th
place and beat them convincingly placing 3rd.
The Army once again came through and took out the Men’s title.
In the women’s final the police took apart
the Army and beat them 5-2, taking out
the Inter-Services women’s title. This was
the first time in many years the Army had been beaten.
Constable Melissa Shaw from Christchurch
was named the female MVP of the
tournament.
The Inter-Service Women’s tournament
team included Police members – Melissa
Shaw, Jessy Raukawa, Holly Cameron,
Paige Keith, Kathryn Hose & Ashlee Gaby-
Sutherland.
The Inter-Services Men’s tournament team
included Police members – Scott Turner,
Cameron Plant and Mike McQuarrie.
Feedback from the Army, Navy and
Airforce was all extremely positive with
having included the Police teams into the
tournament. And planning has started
looking at the 2020 Inter Services
Tournament.
A huge thank you to Dave and Police Sport for the guidance and support.
Also, to Heather and the Police Association for their support.

NZPA Police Pistol Biathlon
NZPA Police Pistol - Biathlon, Saturday 18th
May 2019
Auckland Pistol Club, Manurewa
The Police Pistol Biathlon is an international
match that is hotly contested between rival
police agencies. It features at big events like the
World Police & Fire Games. A national
championship for Police is hosted annually in
New Zealand.
The Biathlon combines cross-country running
with pistol shooting. Run too fast, get out of
breath and your shooting accuracy may suffer;
spend too long shooting and your overall time
may suffer.
This is a challenging match where the fastest
runner or the most accurate shooter is not
necessarily going to win the day. It’s a balancing
act between these two skills that will see you
through.
Guns are provided. No firearms license is
required, and friendly one-on-one supervision is
provided on the firing line on the day. No prior
experience is needed other than familiarity with
the safe operation of the Glock 17 semi-
automatic pistol.
The runs are brief, and the targets are generous,
give this match a go with your mates for a great
days shooting with some fitness thrown in. This
is a
unique event that you will not find elsewhere.
The Biathlon format is:
Run 1.6km, Shoot 12 rounds, Run 1.6km, Shoot
12 rounds, Run 1.6km.
Come along and experience the fun of shooting
while at near maximal heart rate. See what it
does to your group size. Fun !!

NZPA TRIATHLON
OHOPE BEACH 28th MARCH 2019
This year’s event was staged as a stand alone
event for Police members both past and present
with the theme being about participation and
fostering Police camaraderie.
The race was run by the Eastern Bay of Plenty
Triathlon Club using their usual course consisting
of 750mt swim (Tri)/2km run (Duathlon), 20km
bike, 5km run.
Rain greeted the hardy souls that fronted to
Ohope on Thursday 28th March.
Numbers were down as some members were
drawn away to work in Christchurch.
The swim started with a 750mt swim along the
inner harbour back to transition. At the same
time the Duathlon competitors started there 2
km run.
The bike course consisted of 2 x 10km laps of
Ohope which was great as there was limited
traffic which helped as it was pretty wet.
By the time of the run and as Murphy’s Law
would have it the rain stopped, and it started to
clear.
There was some confusion where the run
turnaround was but for those that paid attention
at the briefing, they had no problems.
The prize giving was held at the Ohope Club
which enabled people to mingle and meet other
staff from other Districts.
We are looking for someone to host the 2020
National Championships
