    The Captains Challenge at Larbert High School has setout to inspire and encourage all of our pupils to becomemore active in their everyday life in 2014. This year is

    important for Scotland, as Glasgow will be hosting theCommonwealth Games in July. Our current 11 Captains wantto create a legacy for the games, through taking up a newsport or cultural activity, or challenging themselves in anexisting one. Challenges range from physical challenges;

    such as an improvement in gymnastics performance toemotional challenges, including fundraising for charities.Currently, there are 1200 pupils involved in the Challenge andalready 6 athletes visits planned with a Gold medal winnerLauchie Stewart, Steve Frew and World Record Holder MimiAnderson. We believe that through achieving a challenge, ourpupils will be more motivated in all aspects of their life.

    Cape Town Academy receives Warriors

    Strips as a united result of Larbert High

    School and Football Club partnership.Larbert High Schools South African counterparts were left withmany reminders of their Scottish connections, courtesy ofStenhousemuir Football Club. The Ochilview-based club havesent over a huge number of strips so that every team within theGCU Soccer Academy a youth football club which has aremarkable record of keeping local kids away from the drugsand gang violence which still plague much of the city- now play

    in the famous maroon jerseys. The Warriors have also sentover a large number of boots, shin guards and goalkeepergloves to ensure the young players have all the essentialequipment which they would not normally have access to.Stenhousemuir chairman Bill Darroch said: We as a club aredelighted to contribute to this cause and to continue our strongpartnership with Larbert High School. It is fantastic to seepictures coming back with the young players playing inStenhousemuir strips. To think we are supporting theirinvolvement in football and allowing them to play and love thegame is terrific.

    Rugby Centuriondelivers coaching master

    class at Larbert High SchoolScotland Rugby legend and all time caps and pointsscorer Chris Patterson MBE delivered a Rugby masterclass coaching session with Larbert Highs School ofRugby pupils.

    During the group session, Chris worked on gamerelated attacking skills and hand, catch and pass skills

    while mentoring Rugby Coach Graeme Simpson andModern Apprentice Floydd Kesson. Later, Chris wasinvolved in a Q and A workshop involving 50 pupils andprovided inspirational and motivating words. Followingthis, Chris provided Larbert Highs own RugbyInternationalist Euan Edmond with the pricelessexperience of a one to one kicking session on theschool playing fields.

    Table TennisThe Turnbull brothers, John and Andrew took part in the

    Stirlingshire Senior Schools Competition. Andrew gotrunner up (14th out of 40) and John got 3rd place (9th outof 40). This qualified the two boys for the Scottish Senior

    Schools.

    Julie Nimmo was nominated by Scottish Triathlon to receive

    funding to support her training and competition coststogether with purchasing new equipment. Julie wassuccessful and was awarded funding from Scottish &Southern Energy Next Generation Athlete scheme. Julieattended a Gala Dinner in Loughborough with Olympiansand Paralympians on the 3rd March where she met and waspresented with her cheque by Sir Chris Hoy! The followingday Julie attended a workshop on how to become a moreaccomplished athlete.

    Selina Henderson, Abby Gifford and Kirsten McIntee attended theScottish Schools Indoor Track and Field Championships at TheEmirates Arena in Glasgow in January. High school pupils fromacross Scotland participated in this event and the standard ofcompetition was very high. It was an excellent day for the LarbertHigh pupils as Abby, participating in 60m , the long jump and shotput, achieving 3 personal best scores and Kirsten jumping 4m66cm in the long jump and just missing out on a top ten finish.

    The day was rounded off with Selina Henderson winning bronzein the 60m race with a time of 8.03 secs. These are outstandingachievements by all the girls involved in this event.

    Cross Country

    A mixture of junior and senior Larbert High pupils, 58 in total,participated in The Active Schools Cross CountryChampionships at Boness Recreation Centre. It was a hugelysuccessful day and congratulations to everyone that took part.Larbert High were winners in the S3-4 boys, S5-6 girls and S5-6boys team events and joint winners in the S1-2 girls event.

    Jessica Christie was the winner of the S1-2 girls category withMax Rintoul placing second in the S1-2 boys category. MattStevenson was winner of the S3-4 boys category with RowanCrawford battling to second place. In the senior girls event, JulieHunter and Kirsten McIntee finished 2nd and 3rd respectivelyand Michael Hunter finishing 3rd in the boys category.

    Captains Challenge,Pupil SpotlightIf you didnt recently see Jordan monkey-ingaround in his latest Big Bad Wolf performancethen you missed out on him performing his ownacrobatic stunts. Jordan started gymnastics whilehe was in primary three after his mum signed himup for a taster session at the Falkirk school ofgymnastics. I really enjoyed it, it was reallyactive. We kept moving stations and learningdifferent tricks. Jordan enjoys the freestyleaspect of gymnastics the most and is particularlykeen on doing backflips. Throughout his time inthe sport he has toured Britain competing incompetitions and was invited to compete inNewcastle as well as offered a place in a ScottishOpen.

    When asked who his role model was in the sport

    he said Louis Smith who competed in both theBeijing Olympics and the London Olympicsearning bronze and silver respectively. Jordanhas won several medals his main ones beinggold in a club competition and a bronze at theScottish juniors. His goal is to compete in aBritish-wide competition by the end of school andwe wish him the best of luck in all his futurecompetitions.

    Charlotte Cox, Erin Lawson, Hannah Busby, Kirsteen McIntee, LaurenDickson, Lisa Carlow, Rachel Nicol, Euan Edmond and Claire Williamson

    attended and completed a UKCC Level 1 Teaching Aquatics This is the firststep towards becoming a swimming teacher and is designed to introduce

    candidates to the basic principles of teaching. The course leads to avocational qualification designed to provide our pupils with an introduction tothe knowledge, skills and understanding of the safe and ethical principles for

    effective teaching practices in aquatics. Well done to all who participated.

    Larbert Highs Rugby Modern Apprentice Floyd Kesson attended the ScottishRugby Union Strength and Conditioning course. Floyd will now assist in thevarious Strength and Conditioning Clubs in the Extra Curricular program and

    at The School of Rugby.

    11 pupils who participated in the Football Coaching WAO completed theScottish Football Association Level 1 Early Touches Course. The course was

    delivered by former Scotland player Jimmy Bone

    TaekwandoHassan Haider was victorious in the 45kgcatagegoy and won gold in The Parks Cup

    Championship.

    Jack Foote won the Gold Trophy at aTaekwondo competition in December 2013 .

    Both Jack and Robert Johnston gained aBlack Belt in Taekwondo.

    bronze at Meadowbankjunior kumite

    championships inFebruary. A great win inLewis first competition

    of the year.

    BBC Sport Sound and

    football stars VisitLarbert HighLarbert Highs School of Football pupils were put throughtheir paces during a football master class atStenhousemuir FC, with Kris Boyd, Derek Ferguson andPat Bonner. The event at Stenhousemuir FC was thefirst in a series of BBC Radio Scotland Sportsound roadshows, which aim to promote the sport and give youngpeople the chance to rub shoulders with their footballheroes. Kilmarnock striker Boyd, former Rangersmidfielder Ferguson and ex Celtic and Republic ofIreland goalkeeper Bonner were full of helpful hints andtips. "The good thing for me was the attitude they all

    showed," said Ferguson. Larbert High School teacherDaniel Downie, who helped organise the event, added:"I'm really glad we managed to, not only give these kidsa great experience, but a great memory as well."

    Steve Frew, who won the first Gymnastics CommonwealthGames Gold Medal for Scotland, visited Larbert High as part ofSky Sports Living for Sport program. Sky Sports Living for Sportuses sport stars and sport skills to improve young people's lives.The programme is designed to inspire and support everyparticipant in areas relevant to them whether it's improvingconfidence, attainment at school or leading a healthier lifestyle.

    On his visit, Steve worked closely with a large number of pupilsincluding our Gymnastics team and Creative and Aesthetic pupils.A huge thank you is extended to Steve who made the visit amemorable one for everyone involved.

    around the World.

    John Buchanan started judo as a beginner at Sportif Judo aged9. His journey from beginner to Olympian epitomises the Sportifethos. As a young enthusiastic beginner John developed hisskill and passion for the sport. His rise to the world stage wasnot meteoric but gradual and steady. John is one of only threeScotsmen to win a World Championship medal and wasselected as British Judo Team Captain for the Sydney OlympicGames 2000.

    Clare is a first class judo coach. An Ex British Team memberwith a string of International results including two Europeanchampionship medals, a Youth Olympic medal and silver at theCommonwealth Games in Manchester 2002. Clare brings awealth of experience and technical skill.

    VX Transworld SportRecently Falkirk CannonsVX Club welcomed Channel4s Trans World Sportsprogramme to Falkirk andthe Tryst Community SportsClub. Over two days the filmcrew, Simon and JP,followed the Cannons to V2training at the Mariner

    Centre and then to VXtraining at TCSC at LarbertHigh School. Our juniors and youths featured quite heavilyduring the two days filming and our Youth Rep, MatthewStocks, even challenged the director Simon to a game of V2.We have been advised it will probably be shown sometime inApril, Saturdays 7.30am.

    WaterpoloThe Falkirk Otters now have 6 players actively involved at theScottish Water Polo Academy in Edinburgh. The academy is anew initiative providing a platform for advanced training with

    potential for selection to the Scottish National Junior team. TheFalkirk Otters Developer group is expanding rapidly and isregularly fielding two teams in the Scottish National League

    Development tournaments and hope to build on the success lastyear winning the Division 2 title in the 2013 Final. The Otters aredelighted with the successes of their players over the last threeyears and are optimistic of greater things to come in the future.

    Tryst GymnasticClub President, Andrew Webb has been selected to judge at

    this years Commonwealth Games.
