The announcement of the birth of Jesus

Luke 1:26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent

from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,Luke 1:27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of

the descendants of David; and the virgins name was Mary.

Luke 1:28 And coming in, he said to her, Greetings, favored one!

    The Lord is with you.

Luke 1:29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept

pondering what kind of salutation this was.

Luke 1:30 The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary; for you

    have found favor with God.

Luke 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear ason, and you shall name Him Jesus.

Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most

High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father

Luke 1:33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and

His kingdom will have no end.

Luke 1:34 Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a

    virgin?

Luke 1:35 The angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit

will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will

overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called

the Son of God.Luke 1:36 And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also

conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is

    now in her sixth month.

    Luke 1:37 For nothing will be impossible with God.Luke 1:38 And Mary said, Behold, the bondslave of the Lord;

may it be done to me according to your word. And the angel

The birth of the Lord Jesus

Luke 2:1 Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar

Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth.Luke 2:2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was

    governor of Syria.

Luke 2:3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census,

    each to his own city.

Luke 2:4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of

Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem,

because he was of the house and family of David,

Luke 2:5 in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to

him, and was with child.Luke 2:6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to

    give birth.

Luke 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped

Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was noroom for them in the inn.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with

God, and the Word was God.

John 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.

John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart fromHim nothing came into being that has come into being.

John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

John 1:5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not

    comprehend it.

John 1:6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was

    John.

John 1:7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all

    might believe through him.

John 1:8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about theLight.

John 1:9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world,

    enlightens every man.

John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through

Him, and the world did not know Him.

John 1:11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did

    not receive Him.

John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the

right to become children of God, even to those who believe in Hisname,

John 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh

nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us,

and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the

Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:15 John *testified about Him and cried out, saying, This

was He of whom I said, He who comes after me has a higher

rank than I, for He existed before me.

John 1:16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace

upon grace.John 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and

truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten

God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

    Jonathan Edwards writes:

So God glorifies Himself toward the creatures also in two ways: 1.

By appearing to . . . their understanding. 2. In communicating

Himself to their hearts, and in their rejoicing and delighting in, and

enjoying, the manifestations which He makes of Himself. . . God is

glorified not only by His glory's being seen, but by its being rejoiced

in. When those that see it delight in it, God is more glorified than ifthey only see it.

    C. S. Lewis writes:

But the most obvious fact about praise-whether of God or any

thing-strangely escaped me. I thought of it in terms of compliment,

approval, or the giving of honor. I had never noticed that all

enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise unless (sometimes

even if) shyness or the fear of boring others is deliberately brought

in to check it. The world rings with praise-lovers praising theirmistresses, readers their favorite poet, walkers praising the

countryside, players praising their favorite game-praise of weather,

wines, dishes, actors, motors, horses, colleges, countries, historical

personages, children, flowers, mountains, rare stamps, rare beetles, even sometimes politicians or scholars.

  • 8/14/2019 Pierpont Baptist Dec 2007

    9/21

I had not noticed either that just as men spontaneously praise

whatever they value, so they spontaneously urge us to join them in

praising it: "Isn't she lovely? Wasn't it glorious? Don't you thinkthat magnificent?" The Psalmists in telling everyone to praise God

are doing what all men do when they speak of what they care

about. My whole, more general, difficulty about the praise of God

depended on my absurdly denying to us, as regards the supremely

Valuable, what we delight to do, what indeed we can't help doing,

    about everything else we value.

I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not

merely expresses but completes the enjoyment; it is its appointedconsummation.

Message - Do you know this Jesus?

Illustration - Anna and new camera - Go to slide

    Who is Jesus?

    What is Jesus doing?

Why is Jesus doing it the way He does?

Point #1 - Who is Jesus?

Go to John 1:17 - and we learn that the word that became

    flesh is Jesus Christ.

Jesus (Iesous) in the Greek and means - Savior, Deliverer

or Resucer - the angel said to Joseph - His name is

Jesus and He will save His people from their sins

    11/21

Point #1 - Who is Jesus?

    John 1:1:

The word was with God - distinction

The word was God - equality

Jesus is the eternal word in which there is no beginning

    nor end

    Jesus is God

Next slide - Toziers comments of the church and God

    A.W. Tozier writes;

The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has

substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy ofthinking worshiping men. This she has done not deliberately, but

little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness

only makes her situation all the more tragic.

The low view of God entertained almost universally among

Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among

us. A whole new philosophy of the Christian life has resulted from

this one basic error in our religious thinking.

With our loss of the sense of majesty has come the further loss ofreligious awe and consciousness of the divine Presence.

  • 8/14/2019 Pierpont Baptist Dec 2007

    13/21

We have lost our spirit of worship and our ability to withdraw

inwardly to meet God in adoring silence. Modern Christianity

is simply not producing the kind of Christian who can

appreciate or experience the life in the Spirit. The words, Be

still and know that I am God, mean next to nothing to the self-

confident, bustling worshipper in the middle period of the

    twentieth century.

Is. 40:12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of

    His hand,

And marked off the heavens by the span,And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,

And weighed the mountains in a balance

And the hills in a pair of scales?

Is. 40:13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,Or as His counselor has informed Him?

Is. 40:14 With whom did He consult and who gave Him

    understanding?

And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught

    Him knowledge

And informed Him of the way of understanding?

Is. 40:15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a

    bucket,

And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales;Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust.

Is. 40:16 Even Lebanon is not enough to burn,

Nor its beasts enough for a burnt offering.

Is. 40:17 All the nations are as nothing before Him,

They are regarded by Him as less than nothing andmeaningless.

    God is powerful

God is all knowledgeable and has all wisdom God doesnt need me in anyway, shape nor form And yet He comes as a babe in a manger to save me

    from my sins!

Point #2 - What is Jesus doing?

Biblical insight - If you ever want to know what God is doing

then all you need to do is look and see what He has done.

    Go to John 1:4

    Jesus is addressing the two basic problems that all mankindhas when they come into this world;

    Dead

    Blind

Both of these things are consequences of the fall

We are dead - Ephesians 2 - Illustration Lazarus (John 11)

    17/21

Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses

    and sins,

Eph. 2:2 in which you formerly walked according to the

course of this world, according to the prince of the power

of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of

    disobedience.

Eph. 2:3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the

lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of

the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as

    the rest.

Point #2 - What is Jesus doing?

Jesus is addressing the two basic problems that all

    mankind has when they come into this world;

    Dead

    Blind

We are blind spiritually - 2 Corinthians 4:3-4

Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again he

    cannotsee the kingdom of God

2Cor. 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to

    those who are perishing,

2Cor. 4:4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded

the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the

light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of

    God.

  • 8/14/2019 Pierpont Baptist Dec 2007

    20/21

Point #3 - Why is Jesus doing what He does?

Go to John 1:14 and John 1:18

Jesus exegetes the Father to us by showing us His glory

So all correct Bible interpretation should be ultimately

involved in pulling Jesus from the text in order that we might

    see the glory of God.

Jesus has come in order that the Father might be glorified!

    21/21

    Application;

God is big and powerful and all wise and all knowledgeable

and you arent - therefore we need to become more andmore God centered in our thoughts, words and actions

He is the one who gives life and light - that means that we

are the ones who receive what He gives - He remains

Blessor and we are blessee, He remains Giver and we arereceiver, He remains Benefactor and we are beneficiary

When you see this more clearly in your Bible study,

devotions, small groups, church encounters and prayer

time then you will praise, exalt, thank and delight in Him.

Bottom line - as you see Him and savor Him then you will be

very satisfied and He will be very glorified
