and Benedick in a performance from theNew York Public Theater’s Free Shake-speare in the Park.Set in contemporary Georgia during an

election campaign, the story picks upwith the community of Messina celebrat-ing a break in an ongoing war. But thattruce doesn’t extend to some of thetownspeople as former rivals lock horns, revenge is sought and trickery runs ram-pant.Others in the cast for Tony-winning di-

rector Kenny Leon (“American Son”) in-clude Margaret Odette (“Instinct”),Jeremie Harris (“Legion”), TiffanyDenise Hobbs (“Claws”), Olivia Wash-ington (Lee Daniels’ “The Butler”) andTyrone Mitchell Henderson (“The GoodFight”).The tone of the play is set from the be-

ginning, as a group of characters sing amash-up of “America the Beautiful” andMarvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” out-side a brick house adorned with a largebanner promoting former Georgia Con-gresswoman Stacey Abrams for an un-specified public office in 2020. An all-black cast brings Shakespeare’s ‘MuchAdo About Nothing’ to 21st century life on PBS

By George DickieShakespeare’s timeless comedy about

romantic retribution and miscommuni-cation gets a 21st century update with anall-black cast in a “Great Performances”presentation debuting this week on PBS.In “Much Ado About Nothing,” pre-

miering Friday Nov. 22 (check local list-ings), as part of the series’ third annual“Broadway’s Best” lineup, DanielleBrooks (“Orange Is the New Black”)and Grantham Coleman (“The Ameri-cans”) star as sparring lovers Beatrice

Danielle Brooks and Grantham Cole-man star in the “Great Performances”presentation of Shakespeare’s “MuchAdo About Nothing” Friday on PBS(check local listings).

lic Theater, explained to a recent gather-ing of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif.“This is a story about patriotism. This isa story about people who love their coun-try and need to try to protect it fromwhat’s happening. And that gave a seri-ousness of purpose, I think, to everythingthat followed, no matter how funny, thatnever went away.”For Coleman, there are universal truths

to be had in “Much Ado,” no matter thecomposition of the cast nor the fact thatShakespeare wrote it for 16th century au-diences.“I think what was unique about our pro-

duction,” he says, “isn’t that it’s an all-black cast, but that it’s a story in whichthe community happens to be full of blackpeople. And it happens to be an affluentcommunity outside of Atlanta, and it justhappens to be a place where the soldiersare returning from a war. And I thinkthat’s kind of how we focused on it andlooked at it rather than there can only beblack people in this show and this showis only for black people.“I think we dug deeper into why is this

a black community having these prob-lems? Why are people lying? Why isthere so much gossip? Why is there not asmuch love as there could be? How comethese people don’t love each other? ... SoI think that the closer we got to the truthof what we were doing, the more humanand universal it could be.”

COLD WEATHER AND CARBON MONOXIDEThis week’s story provides information from the New Jersey Poison

Information and Education System.Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas overlooked by many because it

gives no warning – you can’t see, smell, hear, or taste it. The effects ofCO are hard to detect, and symptoms often mimic those of viral ill-nesses like the common cold and the flu. The gas is undetectable with-out a working carbon monoxide detector. This combination createsthe perfect storm for a dangerous, even deadly public health risk. It is important to know how to recognize the effects associated with

CO poisoning, and to seek help immediately. Common symptoms oflow-level poisoning include headaches, sleepiness, fatigue, confusionand irritability. Poisoning can result in nausea, vomiting, irregularheartbeat, impaired vision and coordination, brain damage and death.Carbon monoxide exposures can result from sources other than gas

appliances and heating systems. Other sources of exposure includeportable gas generators used during severe weather; snow accumula-tion in car exhausts/tailpipes, heating and dryer vents; portable roomheaters; fireplace/chimney flues; blocked engine and exhaust systemson boats; and smoking hookah in small and/or poorly ventilatedspaces.Battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors should be put on every

level of the home and near every sleeping area. Check the batteries of

both detectors (fire and CO) when changing theclocks for daylight savings time.If someone is unconscious or unresponsive, get

him or her out of the house and call 9-1-1 immedi-ately.Exit the house/building immediately. Do not waste

time opening windows. This will delay your escapeand cause you to breathe in even more dangerousfumes.Contact your local fire department/energy provider.Call the NJ Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-

1222 for immediate medical treatment advice. Donot waste time looking for information on the internet about carbonmonoxide poisoning. Call for fast, free and accurate information.

If you suspect illness, do not wait until symptoms occur or wastetime looking up information online. Contact your local poison controlcenter at 1-800-222-1222 to get the immediate help you or a lovedone needs. Center experts are health professionals available 24/7 foremergencies, questions, concerns, or information. Services are free, confidential, and a language line is available (over 150 languages).New Jersey residents can reach their center by calling 1-800-222-1222.If someone is unconscious, not breathing, hard to wake up,or seizing, call 9-1-1 immediately.

HOLLYWOOD By Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD — The resurrection of the 1978John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John musical“Grease” will be newborn from the collaborationof Paramount Studios and HBO Max. The projectis to be a download series, “Grease: Rydell High,”reimagined and set in the ‘50s with new songs. The estates of the “Grease” com-posers are withholding rights tothe score, especially “GreasedLightnin’” and “Summer Nights.”The sequel of the original film,“Grease 2,” which starredMichelle Pfeiffer, MaxwellCaulfield and Judy Garland’sdaughter Lorna Luft (who stolethe movie), was a dismal failurethat cost $11 million and grossedonly $15 million. One of the rea-sons it failed was because its pro-ducer, the late Allen Carr, used thefilm as his personal casting couch in selectingyoung male talent. “Grease” without John andOlivia and that wonderful musical score? Is thatthe best they could come up with?

***Billy Porter, who arrived at the Oscars in a ball-gown and picked up his Emmy for “Pose” in aflamboyant pantsuit, has been given a big role inSony’s upcoming “Cinderella” film as ... youguessed it, the Fairy Godmother! But before wesee that we’ll see Porter with Tiffany Haddish,Rose Byrne and Salma Hayek in “Like a Boss,”in theaters Jan. 10. Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski are teamingup in “Imaginary Friends.” Krasinski will write,

produce and star with Reynolds, who also will co-produce. It’s about a man who sees and talks toimaginary friends, some of whom have turned tothe dark side.Kerry Washington also has been busy. She starswith Sterling K. Brown in “Shadow Force,” ReeseWitherspoon in “Little Fires Everywhere” and Je-remy Jordan in the Netflix film “American Son.”

***Director Ryan Murphy and Netflixhave picked up the Tony-nominatedBroadway show “The Prom,” whichwill star Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman,Kerry Washington, James Corden,Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Ran-nells. Streep plays a two-time TonyAward winner who teams up with Cor-den as stars of a flop Broadway mu-sical about Eleanor Roosevelt. Thefilm follows the stars as they try to get

publicity by taking up the cause of anIndiana girl whose prom has been can-

celed rather than allow her to bring her girlfriendas her date. ***That talented Neil Patrick Harris will co-star withKeanu Reeves in “Matrix 4.” Speculation aboutthe “top secret” script is that Neil Patrick will bea formidable opponent. He’s currently complet-ing the Neil Bogart bio-pic “Spinning Gold,” withMichelle Monaghan, Samuel L. Jackson, KenanThompson, Jay Pharoah and D.L. Hughley. Bog-art discovered Donna Summer, Kiss, the VillagePeople, Gladys Knight & the Pips and the IsleyBrothers. Wow, it’ll be like an ‘80s flashback ...Doogie Howser meets the Village People on aSummer Knight!

By Jay BobbinAlan Alda has been able to bring some

of his own history that he cherishes to his“Ray Donovan” role. This year’s recipient of the Screen Ac-

tors Guild Life Achievement Award, thesix-time Emmy winner continues his re-curring part as typically troubled “fixer”Donovan’s psychiatrist as Season 7 of theShowtime drama begins Sunday, Nov. 17.Not only does Alda appreciate that he al-ready had a relationship with title starLiev Schreiber from a Broadway revivalof “Glengarry Glen Ross,” he’s also en-joying the reversal his current televisionjob puts on the connection his HawkeyePierce had to psychiatrist Sidney Freed-man (Allan Arbus) on the classic series“M*A*S*H.”“Every scene I do with Liev is usually

preceded by a couple of hours of search-ing,” the pleasant Alda reports, “figuringout what is best for the whole story andfor the character of Ray Donovan, Lievhas thought so deeply about the theme ofthe show that, as dark as it is, I think it’s apositive look into humanity. And knowinghim, I think that’s what he’s looking for, too.”The therapy-session milieu requires par-

ticularly intimate teamwork from two ac-tors, and Alda says he finds it quite com-fortable: “When you work withsomebody in a play, from the rehearsal

period through the run of performances, you can get very close to that person andare able to make real contact with them. And I like Liev very much as a person.Once in a while, we’ll do an improvisa-tion, so that the writers can see whatmight be useful from that in a scene. It’seven more fun then to take on the personaof a psychiatrist, because it’s comingspontaneously out of me.”Following his revelation last year that

he has Parkinson’s disease, Alda has beenstaying professionally active. In additionto “Ray Donovan” and his interview-based podcast “Clear+Vivid,” he appearsin the current movie “Marriage Story” op-posite Scarlett Johansson and AdamDriver. “I’m glad I can squeeze all of thisin,” reflects the founder of the Alan AldaCenter for Communicating Science atStony Brook (N.Y.) University. “It’s alltied to the theme of communication, andthe country is going through a time wherewe need better relating to one anotherthan we ever have before.”Having also been a writer and director

of “M*A*S*H” on occasion — and verynotably on the memorable series finale —Alda is pleased that the seriocomic Ko-rean War saga remains visible via multi-ple repeats almost every day on MeTV.“That does make me happy,” he confirms,“and it’s amazing that it’s gone on for solong. It’s wonderful. All of us who didthat show are very proud of it.”

Multiple Emmy winner Alan Alda con-tinues his recurring role as “Ray Dono-van” starts its seventh season Sunday onShowtime.

Major League Baseball’s postseason), butthe good news for its fans is that it’s beenallowed to finish its production order, with the remaining episodes being shownon NBC’s digital platforms and on Hulu.“Sunnyside” hasn’t been canceled in theliteral sense, since that word very care-fully has not been used, and there’s actu-ally a chance that it could continue as adigital offering with future episodes if itfares well enough in that space. The factthat NBC’s Peacock streaming service iscoming next year also provides a potentialavenue for the show, so despite its ab-sence from the broadcast airwaves, thecurtain hasn’t closed completely on “Sun-nyside.”Q: I heard that Rob Lowe is doing anotherseries for Fox. What is it, and when willit be on? — Stacy Walsh, Youngstown,OhioA:After doing “The Grinder” and “Men-tal Samurai” for the network, the actor-producer is going to work for it again inthe spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star,” which isscheduled to have a two-night premiereJan. 19 and 20. He’ll join the original “9-1-1’s” production team (including the pro-lific Ryan Murphy) as co-executiveproducer while starring as a New Yorkcop who tries to adjust to life in Austin —thus, the “Lone Star” part of the title —as he tries to rebuild a firehouse whosestaff has been wracked by a sharedtragedy. Liv Tyler also is in the cast.

By Jay BobbinQ: I’m disappointed that “Sunnyside” wastaken off so soon. What happened? —Kyle Dennis, via e-mailA: What mainly happened was low rat-ings, usually a factor when a series van-ishes from a network’s lineup almost assoon as it joined it. The Kal Penn-starringNBC sitcom had a tough task on Thurs-days opposite sports events (including

Q: Did Peter Weber really get hurt whilemaking the new season of “The Bache-lor”? And if he did, will it delay the sea-son? — Tara Collins, via e-mailA: Though many reports said it was a fa-cial injury, Weber evidently got a cut onhis head while getting into a golf cart inCosta Rica during production of the ABCreality-dating series. He did requirestitches and has worn a bandage abovehis left eyebrow since getting those out,but the impact on the making of the showwas minimal, and it’s still on track tohave its traditional on-air start soon afterthe New Year’s holiday.Q: I’m wondering where “The VoyagerWith Josh Garcia” went. It used to be onSaturday mornings. This householdwould get up early and eat breakfastwhile watching Josh take us to awesomedestinations. Will NBC bring it backsoon? — Fred Chavez, Grand Junction,Colo.A: It doesn’t appear so. The network —and Litton Entertainment, which suppliesits informational/educational weekend-morning content (as that company alsodoes for ABC, CBS and The CW, givingit pretty much a monopoly in that broad-cast-programming market) — wanted toadd the Daisy Fuentes-hosted “A NewLeaf” to its lineup for the current season,so one of those NBC shows had to go.“The Voyager,” which likely was themost expensive of the series to produce, was the one that got the pink slip.
