Building Inspector Jan M Johnson Who says certain changes he recom- mended ¬ will have to be made before the house is safe The board paa ed a resolution declaring sufficient changes had been made to make the playhouse safe which so far as the board is concerned ends the matter The building inspector says he has no desire to persecute the opera house owners or management but having been called upon by the board made- an examination of the place The board of safety at a meeting held Wednesday night named Mr Elliott to go with the building in ¬ spector and ascertain if changes as ordered looking to making the house safe had been made Mr Elliott and Mr Johnson went over the house yes- terday morning and when the board met in special session at 330 p m made their report which was as fol ¬ lows Committee Report Pensacola Fla Nov 4th 09 Hon Board of Public Safety City Gentlemen After our examination this morning we find the following portion of our recommendations have been complied with On first floor the windows have been cut down and the sash removed- red lights over all exits and signs in place balcony exit leading out on Government street red light over sign marked exit loading from this bal ¬ cony also red Tight at the head of the stairs also doors at the foot of the stairs leading outward Three windows on the south side marked exit have red lights over them and following will show what has not been complied with The furnace under the centre of the stage and flue pipe which passes through the floor of the stage have not been properly protected in order- to eliminate danger from fire the aisle down the centre This not been extended to the orchestra as recom- mended the windows on the south side of the balcony Jave not been changed into doors and fire escapes provided as recommended The win- dows ¬ over the main entrance on the west eIevation have not been cut into doors and fire escapes provided neither have these three windows been marked with were made In a communication addressed to the board all were Incorporated This follows Pensacola Fla Nov 4th 09 Hon Board of Public Safety City Gentlemen We the undersigned members of your committee beg to report the following in reference to the Pensacola opera house First Under the head of recom- mendations ¬ from the building inspect- or ¬ the following was recommended 1 There should be an asbestos curtain for the front of the stage the sides of the openings are of wood and fire could easily creep around to the auditorium these sides should be cov- ered ¬ with metal 2 The furnace under the centre of the stage should have the proper protection from all wood work The flue from the stage passes through the flooring with the sheet iron next to the woodwork this line should be covered with proper covering 3 The three windows on the first floor on the south side should be made into doors opening out to an iron balcony with wide fire escape stairs leading to the adjoining lot 4 The aisles down the centre should by all means extend through to the orchestra instead of half way of the auditorium 5 The windows- on the south side of the balcony should be treated the same as the windows on the first floor the win ¬ dows on the west elevation over the main entrance should be cut into large doors opening outward and there should also be metal stairways leading from the front balcony to the main street All of which is submit ¬ ted Respectfully etc House Voted to be Safe A general discussion followed and at length it was decided that as the house was not a fireproof building the changes which had been made were sufficient to make the place reasonably safe A motion to such effect was offered by Mr Elliott who was a member of the examining com- mittee ¬ Manager Xick Smith was present and he gave the board all the Information asked for He maintained also that the local house would be found to have more exits than many larger houses where immense throngs
