MEDITATION / IBAADAH IN ITIKAFBesides regular Salaat and Dua, do you re-member the last time you set aside time to“just be” with Allaah? For some, it mayberegular basis, while for others it maybe in-frequent. And some may even be askingthemselves what is Itikaf? Brothers and sis-ters, Itikah is the practice of secluding your-self in mediation or ibaadah and focusing

solely on Allaah (SWT). The goal of Itikaf is to forget all life’smundane affairs and focus solely on the attributes of Allaahand his love for you. Prophet Mohammed (SAW) practicedItikaf regularly and encouraged all Muslims to do so as well. Ingeneral, there are three requirements for performing Itikaf: (1)Belief in Islam, (2) Your intention or Niyyah, and (3) Fasting. For the most part, Itikaf is conducted at a mosque, but excep-tions are possible depending on the type of Itikaf and accom-modations available at the mosque. Types of Itikaf include:1. Wajib: this Itikaf is performed when you ask Allaah (STW)for something and it is granted. When this occurs, this Itikafbecomes compulsory. The sooner its performed, the better.2. Nafil: this Itikaf can be performed at any place or time, forany period. For example, it is stated in Hadith, the best time toperform this type of Itikaf is immediately after Fajr Salaat andat Tahajjud. It is stated that Prophet Mohammed (SWT) spenta large amount of time in seclusion and mediation in MountHira. It was during this time in Itikaf that angel Jibreel (SAW)appeared before the prophet and the revelation of the Qu’raanbegan.3.Sunnah: this Itikaf takes place in the last ten (10) nights ofRamadan. Performing Itikaf during this period is especially grati-fying because the blessings bestowed on the person is ampli-fied 70 times. If performed on the night of Lailatul Qadr, thebenefits are even greater. And remember Allaah (SWT) ordersus to seek night of power as stated in Surah Al Qadr (Chapter97): “Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem: Innaa anzalnaahu feelailatil qadr, Wa maa adraaka ma lailatul qadr, Lailatul qadrikhairum min alfee shahr, Tanaz zalul malaa-ikatu war roohufeeha bi izni-rab bihim min kulli amr, Salaamun hiya hattaamat la’il fajr”. Surah Al Qadr can be summarized as such:The Qu’raan was revealed in the night of power. The night ofpower is better than 1000 months, or 83 years and 4 months. When Allaah (SWT) says “better”, he means “more than that”.And what happens on this night? The angels and the rue comesdown on earth with the permission of Allaah (SWT) and bringssalamaat: Allaah’s (SWT) peace, tranquility, acceptance, greet-ings to us. And it is your opportunity to prayer, read Qu’raan, make dua, strengthen your ibaadah and thank Allaah (SWT)for all he has done for you. And the connection between LailatulQadr and Itikaf?

REVEREND’S CORNERBy Rev. Thomas Graf / Professor at BC College, Florida

Rev. Thomas Graf

REMEMBER WE CAME FROM DUSTAND UNTO DUST WE SHALL RETURNAs many of you are aware, our church spon-sored an Interfaith Dialogue Event this pastMay along with Keys To Peace, down here inIslamorada, Florida. We invited my belovedfriend and colleague, Sheik Shafayat

Mohammad to give a teaching on Islam, followed by dialoguewith those present, leading into an Interfaith time of prayer andthen fellowship in our parish hall. Those who attended seemedto benefit much from this honest attempt to come together andlearn from one another. Well over 100 people from many dif-ferent faith traditions (Even an atheist) attended. To this day, almost 10 months later, people are still commenting on what awonderful experience it was for them and for our communityin the Upper Keys. Here are two comments that surfaced sur-rounding this wonderful event. “I was so impressed with TheSheik and his congregation. I think it took much courage forthem to come all the way down here, and to present so hon-estly and openly this true understanding of Islam. I think ithelped much to change the fears of many who attended.” (Amember of St. James the Fisherman Church.) “Thank you forputting on such a meaningful ecumenical event, I am very grate-ful. I thought it was a wonderful afternoon, particularly in theway it created real dialogue and aired issues (as well as deepseated feelings) not usually talked about in a room with all par-ties present. What a great opportunity, both to ask questionsand to hear so many passionate prayers from different cornersof the world. And how unique for everyone there to hear howpowerful and peaceful and meditative that Islam call to prayercould be. I bet many of the people in the room had either neverheard it before or had any idea it could be so lovely. It affectedme very much the way those deep, sonorous Buddhist chantsdo, as well as some of the High Holiday prayers from my owntribal tradition. Again, many sincere thanks to you, SheikShafayat and Keys To Peace. It was a good step.” (Memberand panelist from local Jewish Community.) Ten months later, our nation has undergone some very challenging changes. Therehave been some who have emerged and have attempted to beinstruments of division where once we seemed to be movingtowards understanding and connection. Where do we go fromhere? Perhaps we just continue to follow the movement of theHoly Spirit who continues to lead and guide, perhaps in waysthat we may not always expect. I thought it was interestingthat the week following this joyful ecumenical event, our Gos-pel called us to learn from another “outsider.” We heard againof the Centurion (Powerful authority figure, outside the faithof Israel.) whose faith response touched Jesus so deeply thathe tells the Jews, “I tell you, I have not found such great faitheven in Israel.” And all of this happened in Capernaum, “TheCity of Compassion.”

IJMAIJMAIJMAIJMAIJMAJustice ® Dr. Ghous Muhammad / Karachi, Pakistan

Ijma plays a most crucial role in the de-velopment of Islamic law. The existingbody of Fiqh is the result of the age-longIjtihad and Ijma process. This process isstill operative and can add to the body of

law. The idea that Ijma was confined to the early three genera-tions seems to have developed in the period when the door ofIjtihad was closed. The traces of this idea are to be found in al-Shafi’ but he is not categorical on this point. As Ijtihad andIjma are inter-linked, it appears that Ijma was deemed invalidwhen the possibility of original interpretation of law was dis-carded. The Medieval view that Ijam after the early three gen-erations is invalid, is, in fact, a later concept and cannot beaccepted. The major function of Ijma is to unite the divergentopinions on a problem progressively and to ascertain the truthof a Qiyas. Its other important functions may be summed up inthe words of Snouck Hurgronje: “The consensus guaranteesthe authenticity and correct interpretation of the Koran, thefaithful transmission of the Sunnah of the Prophet, the legiti-mate use of analogy and its results; it covers, in short, everydetail of the law, including the recognized differences of theseveral schools.”(Coulson, N.J’ Conflicts and Tensions inIslamic Jurisprudence, Chicage, 1969, pp. 22-24)

According to the classical theory of Ijma. Ijma has been de-fined, in the classical Fiqh-literature, in different ways. Onedefinition says: “Ijma is an agreement of the Islamic Commu-nity on a religious point.” Another definition states: “Ijma is aconsensus of opinion of the persons competent for Ijma (Ahlal-Ijma), when a religious issue arises, whether rational or le-gal.” A third definition runs: “Ijma is a unanimous agreement ofthe jurist of the Community of a particular age on a certainissue.” The first two definitions have been criticized by thelater jurists themselves, while the third has been accepted asthe standard definition. This is no doubt only a theoretical defi-nition agreed upon by the jurists, and it should be noted that itdoes not represent the actual historical process of Ijma in Is-lam. This definition does not allow difference of opinion ofeven one jurist of the generation in which an Ijma is supposedto have taken place. The reason is that, according to the clas-sical theory, Ijma is not complete, if even one person compe-tent for Ijtihad (interpretation) and nazar (thinking) remainsopposed to the “agreed” decision. Further, to substantiate ‘to-tal Ijma’ it is said that Ijma is not subject to reason, but is the“privilege (karamah)” of the Community.(Abd al-Aziz al-Bukhari, Kashf al-Asrar ‘ala Usul al-Bazdawi, Stanbul, 1308A.H’ vol. III, p. 227.)

As also concerning the children who are weak and oppressed:that ye stand firm for justice to orphans. There is not a gooddeed which ye do, but God is well-acquainted therewith.”(4:127) Dear sisters and brothers, we open our eyes in themorning, rattled by the sound of our alarm, we hit the snoozebutton and sleepily start thinking of how good and cozy it feelsunder our warm blanket. We start thinking of that nice, hotcup of coffee and wondering whether we have the time to eatbreakfast at home, or grab something whether we’re on ourway to work, or to drop off our kids to school. We finally hopout of our bed, flip the light switch on and turn on the faucetfor the hot water to start running. We’ve become programmedto expect all these basic amenities to work like clockwork. Wemake wudhu and pray our Fajr salat. Our closet is filled withan assortment of clothes and shoes, our refrigerators also filledwith food for at least one to two weeks. So far the start to ourday has been filled with many blessings and Insha Allah, therest of our day will continue with even more blessings. Mostof us will have a good lunch and dinner, we will sit in air con-ditioned cars and offices and homes. We will have a home tocome to every day, we have our family to converse, laugh andchat with throughout the day. This is the typical day for mostof us. We will complain how driving to work was annoying, how work was stressful, the sisters will stress out trying tocome up with a quick meal plan for dinner. At the same time, thousands of miles away, a family is awakened, hungry, cold, not knowing where the next meal will come from, not know-ing if they will get a meal that day. The parents are wonderinghow they will take care of their children’s basic needs…just toclothe and feed them. What we consider basic amenities ofwater and electricity does not exist for many families in manyparts of the world today. Many live in tents, they have norunning water, no electricity, no medicines to take away theirpain, no hot meal, no hot coffee, no warm blankets, no safety,no privacy. Coincidently, there are also many impoverishedfamilies right here in our local communities.According to various reports:795 million people – or one in nine people in the world – do nothave enough to eat.98% of the world’s undernourished people live in developingcountries.

last name, to have citizenship, to perform their religious duties,to have the right to marry or to travel, or to go to school. Whenthey make their way to the border, some of them even get shotby the Myanmar military while trying to cross the Naaf Rivertying Myanmar to the Bangladeshi border. As per Bangladeshiauthorities, more than 2,000 are estimated to cross the borderas a consequence of the increased oppression of the military.Rohingyas start a death-dealing journey to freedom and theyface a threat at every step they take. Most of them get injuredor lost or get killed on the way to the border, some may getkilled while crossing the border. Troubles do not end here sinceBangladeshi officials have reinforced border patrols lately tointercept the entry of Rohingyas inside their frontiers. In fact, what we would expect and hope is for them to embrace andprotect them as refugees since their return will most probablylead to their death. When we take into consideration these facts,we realize that a very cruel system full of oppression operatesin this part of the world and people are watching this withanxious and fearful eyes. Regrettably, some people in the worldhave left behind their conscience and never think of others’lives or to be more frank they do not care at all as long as theycan sustain a comfortable life. This is both very surprising andpainful because they may one day be subject to the same fate.Mostly, they do not think they will ever be exposed to such alife. They continue to lack empathy and care for others unlessthey or their families experience some unexpected hardshipsand difficulties, or oppression. However, what makes us hu-man is the moral conscience that God bestows upon us. Rightand fair decisions can only be made with a sound, pure con-science based on the fear of God. All the people on earth areresponsible for those who are oppressed even though the per-secuted might be as far away as the other side of the world andthat they probably may not even personally meet them evenonce in their lifetime. People are responsible both for the bless-ings they are given and the actions they leave behind as Godreminds in the Qur’an: “What reason could you have for notfighting in the Way of God – for those men, women and chil-dren who are oppressed?” (4:75) As a consequence, when yousee a news report in a newspaper concerning these oppressedpeople, do not turn the page with disregard. Keep in mind thatwhat these poor people are going through is real. Think ofwhat you can do, what solid steps you can take as even oneconscientious and caring human being.

A DEATH-DEALING JOURNEY

For a Better LifeTHE DREAMTHE DREAMTHE DREAMTHE DREAMTHE DREAM

He was sound asleep after completing hisobligatory nightly prayer. All of a sudden,he woke up perplexed. He was puzzled aboutwhat he just saw in his dream. He got up,performed wudu (ablution) and offered tworakaats nafal (voluntary prayer) and wentto bed again. After a little while, he woke up

again. He had seen the same dream the second time. He per-formed wudu, offered his prayer and went back to sleep again. This time he woke up trembling. He had seen the same dream athird time. He immediately summoned his trusted advisor andrelayed the dream to him. “The holy prophet (SAW) came in tomy dreams three times. He (SAW) pointed towards two menwith blue eyes and asked me to protect him (SAW) from the evilof these two men.” Both of them pondered over the dream for awhile and then the noble adviser suggested not to disclose thedream to anyone and to travel towards Madinah immediately toinvestigate. The man was Sultan Noor Uddin Zangi, the pious,God fearing ruler of Syria in the year 1162. They loaded thecamels with luggage, took a few men with them and headed forMadinah in haste. They stopped only for necessities and reachedMadinah in record time. The Sultan and his companions wentstraight to the Prophet’s Masjid and offered two rakkat nafalsalaah. Afterwards, he invited the entire population of the city ofMadinah and distributed gifts among them all. He also announceda big feast at night and instructed “everyone” in the city ofMadinah to attend. He had not seen the two men with blue eyesshowed to him by the holy prophet (SAW) in his dream whiledistributing the gifts. The feats began. Meanwhile, the Sultankept a careful eye on all attendees to recognize the two menshown to him by the Holy Prophet (SAW). The feast went onbut he still did not see those two men with blue eyes. He askedcuriously if anyone was left out from the feats, the crowd de-nied. His heart was racing. He pressed upon his inquiry again ifanyone was left out. It was after his insistence the he came toknow about the two westerners staying close to the Prophet’smasjid who had attended the feast. They had a public reputationof being celibates purely devoted to prayers at all times. Theybarely left their place of worship and were seen at the graveyardat times making du’aa for the buried. He immediately summonedthem before him. One look and he knew they were the same asshown to him in the dream. He inquired of them about theiridentity and motives. They told a cunning story that they werepilgrims from the West, had come to perform hajj but the strongdesire to stay close to the Holy Prophet (SAW) had kept them inMadinah. The Sultan visited the room where they were stayingbut could only find usual daily items and some scattered books. The situation left his seriously puzzled amid frequent requestsfor their pardon by the citizens of Madinah. He was told abouttheir very pious nature and their continuous charity during therecent drought. The embarrassing situation remained until anidea struck the Sultan.

THE NOBLE LAST PROPHET OF ALLAAH

My dear friends, Prophet Muhammad SAWwas sent as a mercy to all mankind. As be-lievers we must strive every single day ofour lives to learn more about him and hisillustrious life, his great personality and hisunblemished character and implement thesame in our lives and the lives of our familiesand also teach it to others. He alone is ouresteemed example and role model. Allah SWT

commanded us in the Quran chapter 33/21: Indeed in the Mes-senger of Allah (Muhammad) you have a good example to fol-low, for him who hopes for the (meeting with Allah) and thelast Day and remembers Allah (God Almighty) much. It is awell-known fact that the Prophet of Islam was the supremelymost successful man in the entire human history. But he wasnot just a hero, as Thomas Carlyle has called him. According tothe Quran, he was a good example for all mankind. He hasshown us the way of achieving supreme success in this world.By studying the life of the Prophet (pbuh) we can derive at least10 most important principles which were followed by theProphet (pbuh). In short, the Prophet of Islam SAW was apositive thinker in the full sense of the word. All his activitieswere result-oriented. He completely refrained from all such stepsas may prove counter-productive.First Principle: (To begin from the possible). This principle iswell explained in a saying of Aishah RA. She said: “Wheneverthe Prophet SAW had to choose between two options, he al-ways opted for the easier choice.” (Al-Bukhari). To choose theeasiest option means to begin from the possible and one whobegins from the possible will surely reach his or her goal.Second Principle: (To see advantage in disadvantage). In theearly days of Makkah, there were many problems and difficul-ties. At that time, a guiding verse in Quran was revealed. It said:“With every hardship there is ease, with every hardship there isease.” (94/5-6). This means that if there are some problems, there are also opportunities and ease at the same time. And theway to success is to work on the problems with sabr or pa-tience, and take advantage of the opportunities.Third Principle: (To change the place of action). This prin-ciple is derived from the Hijrah. Hijrah was not just a migrationfrom Makkah to Madinah. It was to find a more suitable placefor Islamic work, as history proved later on. Sometimes we toohave to find a more suitable place to live or work, one that ismore conducive to following the orders of Allah SWT and theexample of His last Messenger.Fourth Principle: (To make a friend out of an enemy). TheProphet SAW was repeatedly subjected to practices prosecu-tion by the unbelievers. At that time and now also, the Quranenjoined upon him and us the return of good for evil. And then,as the Quran added, “You will see your worse enemy has be-come your closest friend” (41/34). It means that a good deed inreturn of a bad deed has a conquering effect over your en-emies.

From America to Inside The Kaaba By: Mohamed Sala’huddin Pazhoor - Founder & CTO of Divine Connect USA

We continued walkingtoward the Kaabaaccompanied by the Haramsecurity, who was creatinga ring around the Kaabawithout disturbing the tawaafwhich was still ongoingthroughout the entireprocess. As I walked towardsthe majestic door of theKaaba along with the Al-Shaibi family, I could see theAl-Hajar Al-Aswad (TheBlack Stone) with no onearound it. It was a rare

feeling to be in front of the black stone and have the ability toeasily see it, in full view, with no distractions of pilgrims racingjust to get a glimpse. Here I was with full access to Al Hajar AlAswad and it was a breathtaking moment. I very respectfullystood in front of the black stone, removed my spectacles andwith trembling hands put them inside my shirt pocket. AllahuAkbar! I took this great opportunity to kiss the holy Al-Hajar Al-Aswad. My face reached out to the stone as I kissed it praisingour creator, Almighty Allah by reciting “Allahu Akbar”, Allah isthe greatest. I took in my surroundings I gulped at the sheermagnitude of what I was about to experience. I walked withthe greatest anticipation upon the steps leading to the entranceof the holy Kaaba. The members of the Al-Shaibi family led theway, as they were about to open the glorious door of the Kaaba. My legs were trembling as I placed my foot upon each of thesteps until finally reaching the pinnacle. I mustered up the courageand placed my right foot into the holy Kaaba. I touched thebeautiful golden doors of the Kaaba as I entered inside the mostsacred spot in the world whilst my hands shook in amazement!I was flooded with emotions and the thought that this was thevery same place that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peacebe upon him) had prayed in. My eyes were filled with tears andas I was overwhelmed with emotions. I began to take in all thefeatures of inside the Kaaba and made a quick 360-degree lookat the captivating interior that spiritually moved my soul. It wasat that point that I realized I had to thank Almighty Allah. Icomposed and prepared myself to do two rakaat prayer. I raisedmy hands and said “Allahu Akbar” with tears flooding down myeyes reciting Surah Al Fatihah. I had never been as emotional asI was then reciting inside the holy Kaaba. It took me a whilebefore I could finish Surah Al Fatihah and then Surah Al-Kafiroon.After the ruku when my forehead touched the holy floor duringthe sujood, I could feel something extraordinary. For sure thiswas an experience like never before, it was a moment of glory, happiness, emotions and thankfulness to our creator AlmightyAllah.

A TA TA TA TA Tale of Two Womenale of Two Womenale of Two Womenale of Two Womenale of Two Women

Letter from IsraelMy name is Raia Tessler and I live in TelAviv. I am now 64 and I have been plead-ing justice to get a divorce from my hus-band for the past 28 years, but my hus-band will not give permission. Under thecourt’s interpretation of Jewish religiouslaw, a husband’s consent is necessary toend a marriage. As has been the case forcenturies, a Jewish divorce is not final inIsrael until men deliver handwritten di-vorce decrees into the cupped hands ofthe women. Even if you’re not religious, you have to be divorced by Jewish reli-gious law that governs family matters. AnIsraeli woman can’t split from her spousewithout proving extraordinary abuse orneglect. A simple assertion of “We don’tget along” or “This marriage was a mis-take” is not enough. All the husband hasto do to preserve the status quo is avoidtaking action, asking for delays, failing toshow up in court, and otherwise stone-walling and dragging things out in an at-tempt to wear her down. He doesn’t wantto grant her wish. My friend TamarDenninberg lives in Jerusalem. She was avibrant, and bright young woman whenshe got married and then had a beautifuldaughter. After only four years of mar-riage she filed for divorce and has beenfighting for it for her entire youth. Herdaughter is now 36 and she is now a 61years old women who has lost all her joys, dreams and hopes. She never dated an-other man, and never had an opportunityto build a relationship. she’s given up onstarting a family. Under Israeli law, sheremains trapped in a defunct marriage thather husband won’t allow to end. She can’tlegally remarry, and was obligated evento repay some of his debts. “How come awoman’s freedom is at the mercy of herhusband?” she asks. “That law was writ-ten, maybe 4,000 years ago, but it’s putthe woman in a place that they becameinvisible and helpless and most of the time,

Note: The following article is not my original writing. I adopted most of it from various sources on theinternet. Some names are changed to preserve discretion. This is the story of two women who are thousandsof miles apart from each other, in different countries, they are from different cultures and they followdifferent religions. However, they both are the victims of their orthodox cultural faiths, may be because oftheir gender.

completely dependent on their husband’swill.” We are just two living examples ofhundreds, perhaps thousands, of Israeliwomen caught in legal and social limbobecause of a law that leaves matter of di-vorce for all Jewish citizens in the handsof a government-funded religious court. In Israel, there is neither civil marriagenor civil divorce; only rabbis can legalizea marriage or its dissolution, which is onlypossible with the husband’s full consent. If a woman has children with another manbefore divorce is granted, those childrenand their descendants will be deemed ille-gitimate and not allowed to marry in Is-rael under current law. A Jewish man alsoneeds his wife’s permission to divorce, but without it he can live with anotherwoman and have children recognized asJewish in Israel, while she cannot. Thecourt, consisting of a panel of rabbis, bases its decisions on the customs ofOrthodox Judaism. The rulings apply toall Jewish Israelis, whether they are Or-thodox, Conservative or Reform, obser-vant or secular. Around 35% of Jewishmarriages in Israel end in divorce.Letter from IndiaMy name is Shayara Bano, I am 35, I livein the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, and Ihave been married for 13 years. Last yearI received an unusual letter from my hus-band, accusing me of stealing jewelry andmoney. The letter closed with a singlesentence, repeated three times: “I divorceyou. I divorce you. I divorce you.” Hehas not allowed me to even see my twochildren. I am among the countless Mus-lim women in India who have been aban-doned by their husbands, often withoutany notice, through “triple talaq” permit-ted under Muslim family law, that allowsa Muslim man to instantaneously divorcehis wife. After the grieving was over, Istood up and said enough is enough, andfiled a law suit against my husband in theIndian Supreme Court. My friend Ishrat

Jahan was only 14 when she became abride. They were married for 15 years andhave four children. In 2015, she was un-ceremoniously divorced over the phone. Her husband called her from Dubai, re-peated “I divorce you” three times, andhung up. Ishrat is not even allowed to seeher children. Along with other women, sheis now also approaching the SupremeCourt. “I want my children, I want ali-mony, and I want my home that my par-ents paid for.” Quran’s teachings on tripletalaq require months of reconciliation at-tempts before the marriage can be dis-solved. But our religious leaders don’tadhere to that guidance. Many of India’sMuslim clerics insist that the Indian judi-ciary has no right to interpret their reli-gious texts. The All India Muslim PersonalLaw Board, a powerful organization thatdictates family law, filed a 69-page affi-davit in September countering Bano’s case.“Male is stronger and female weaker sex.Man is not dependent on woman for hisprotection. On the contrary, she needs himfor her defence,” stated the affidavit, add-ing that triple talaq wards off the possibil-ity of a rise in murders of women whosehusbands want to divorce them. India isthe home to the world’s third-largestMuslim population, with 90 million Mus-lim women. Roughly 10% are survivorsof triple talaq, and the clear majority re-ceive no compensation. In a 1985 land-mark judgment, the Supreme Courtgranted divorcee, Shah Bano, alimony forlife. But following protests from Muslimleaders and others that the court was be-ing intrusive, the judgment was over-turned.Concluding Note: For Divorce in Israel, please watch the movie GETT which isavailable on the internet. For Divorce inIndia, the Supreme Court has agreed totake the case.

And the life of the Prophet SAW is a his-torical proof of this principle. This is whyat times like these we have to exercisegreat patience and tolerance despite all thepainful and blasphemous and degradingthings that are said against the nobleProphet Muhammad (pbuh) and aboutMuslims. We have to react how he wouldhave reacted and we must behave howhe behaved, and we must forgive the wayhe forgave and we must live Islam theway he lived Islam and we must strive toshare this message the way he shared thismessage with all mankind if we truly lovehim and more so if we truly love AllahGod Almighty SWT.Fifth Principle: (To turn a minus intoplus). After the Battle of Badr, about 70of the unbelievers were taken as the pris-oners of war. They were educated people. The Prophet (pbuh) announced that if anyone of them would teach ten Muslim chil-dren how to read and write, he would befreed. This was the first school in the his-tory of Islam in which all of the studentswere Muslims, and all of the teachers werefrom the enemy ranks. Here I shall quotea British orientalist who remarked aboutthe Prophet of Islam (pbuh): “He facedadversity with the determination to wringsuccess out of failure.”Sixth Principle: (The power of peace isstronger than the power of violence). When Makkah was conquered, all of theProphet’s direst opponents were broughtbefore him, these were people who tor-tured and punished and hurt him and hisfollowers and their relatives in the worsemanner for many years simply becausethey believed in one God. They were warcriminals, in every sense of the word. Butthe Prophet SAW did not give the orderto kill them. He simply said: “Go, you arefree.” The result of this kind behavior wasmiraculous; that entire city immediatelyaccepted Islam. This type of peacefulapproach (and not violence or the sword)is what allowed Islam to spread to all cor-ners of this world with Allah’s help.Seventh Principle: (Not to be a two-ways only thinker - either this way or thatway only).

In the famous Ghazwa of Muta,Khalid Bin Walid decided to withdrawMuslim forces from the battlefieldbecause he discovered that they weredisproportionately outnumbered bythe enemy. When they reachedMadinah, some of the Muslims re-ceived them by the word “O Furrar”(O deserters!) The Prophet SAWsaid: “No, they are Kurrar (men ofadvancement).” Those people werethinking ‘two ways only’, either fight-ing or retreating. The Prophet saidno, there is also a third option, andthat is to avoid war and find a time tostrengthen yourselves. Now historytells us that the Muslims, after threeyears of preparation, advanced againtowards the Roman border and thistime they won a resounding victory.Eighth Principle: (To bring the battlein one’s own favorable field). Thisprinciple is derived from the Ghazwaof Hudaibiyya. At that time, the un-believers were determined to engageMuslims in fighting, because theywere in an advantageous position. Butthe Prophet (pbuh), by acceptingtheir harsh conditions unilaterally, entered into a pact. It was a ten-yearpeace treaty. Until then, the meetingground between Muslims and non-Muslims had been on the battlefield. Now the area of conflict became thatof an ideological debate. Within twoyears, Islam emerged as victoriousbecause of the simple reason of itsideological superiority.Ninth Principle: (Gradualism in-stead of radicalism). This principleis well-established by a Hadith of Al-Bukhari. Aishah RA says that the firstverses and chapters of the Quranwere related mostly to heaven andhell. And then after a long time whenthe people’s hearts had softened, thespecific commands to desist fromadultery and drinking etc. were re-vealed in the Quran.

I always wanted to be a part of an Islamiccircle, and to fulfill this desire I attendedseminars, meetings, Jumuah Khutbah andlectures of well-known scholars from allover the world. I still feel I have to dosomething more, especially in this time ofturmoil about Islam & Muslims. Our reli-gion is misunderstood by majority of Non–Muslims, and few extremist Muslimswho have forgotten that our ProphetMohammad (SAW) have lived amongChristians and Jews when he migrated tothe city of Madinah from Mecca. As Mus-lims we know that Islam teaches us thatkilling one person, is like killing all man-kind / a nation. So, it is our duty to go outand spread the real teachings of Islam andchange that fear into friendship throughDa’wah. I have always read AL-HIKMATINTERNATIONAL MUSLIM MAGAZINEand AL- HIKMAT MUSLIM COFFEENEWS for years. This was the best op-portunity for me to contact the office andexpress my interest in Da’wah. I calledthe office and my call did not go to an-swering machines (like some other places)but live person answered the phone onthe first ring. She gave the detailed an-swer to my questions and explained thework they are doing in the path of Allaah.I expressed my interest to go visit themand collect materials for Da’wah purpose.

MY TRIP TO AL-HIKMAT DA’WAH CENTERShe agreed. The day of the meeting, I met withSis. Salma who greeted and received me at thedoor. I felt very happy and welcome. At the en-trance there is a visitors log where I signed in(very organized), I thought. Then she introducedme to Shaikh Shafayat, who was on the phonebut turned around and acknowledged my pres-ence and gave sincere reply to my Salam. ThenSis. Salma gave me a tour of the Da’wah Cen-ter. It is a nice building with 3 offices, a Da’wahhall and another area for classes and recreation. There is also a room for all the publications andDa’wah materials books and brochures. AsShaikh was going to perform Zuhr Salah in DarulUloom, next door to the Da’wah center build-ing, he inquired about my journey of 31/2 hoursand my safety. That showed his sincerity andpassion. What he preaches he practices too.Sis.Salma took me to the publications room andgave me copies of the Qur’aan, , Magazinesand informative brochures and carried 2 boxesin the trunk of my Car. I was also introduced toanother staff member, Sis. Faria, who gave medirection to a Halal restaurant, without gettinglost. All this happened within one hour. The besthour of my life! I was impressed by their heartfelt warmth, sincerity and dedication to theirwork. Al-Hikmat need our support and dona-tion to continue their work. May Allah SWT re-ward them abundantly.

Parents take heed! Children using devicessuch as smartphones and tablets at bedtimehave more than twice the risk of a disruptednight’s sleep compared to children withoutThe above verses speak glowingly of the first caliph (leader)

of Islam, Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.).They tell of a man whoblazed a trail of glory in playing a pivotal role in sanitizing theminds of people in his time by introducing to them snippetsof Islam which had a cumulative effect of bringing about innot all but, many others a spiritual revival. What a commit-ment to the deen (religion) of Islam by Hazrat Abu Bakr(R.A.). Cannot ask for a better soldier in Islam after ProphetMuhammad (S.A.W.) than the first caliph. A multi-dimen-sional man, Hazrat Aby Bakr (R.A.) acted on the world’sstage with great vigour and zeal, performing his roles asfather, missionary, leader and judge par excellence. He pos-sessed the attributes needed to execute those parts, hencebeing given titles along the way viz. Ittiqaa ( Pious ), AbdulFadhl ( Father of Generosity), Siddiq Akbar ( The Most Truth-ful ) and Ameenun- Naas ( The Most Trustworthy personamongst the people). One of the legacies that the first caliphbequeathed to us was a collection of beautiful quotationswhich if read and digested can surely impact positively on usall. A few examples of those illustrious sayings are:•It’s hard to be patient in adversity, but it’s harder to lose itsreward.”•“Rue that day when good wasn’t done.”•“We crave for a world that craves for our exit.”•“Be kind to our charges.”•“The tongue of man is the root cause of adversity.”•“It’s better to be alone than in bad company.”•“The company of pious men is better than being in soli-tude.”•“Improve our own conduct before improving others.”•“Run away from greatness and it will follow you.”•“None should look down upon another Muslim.”•“If you consult somebody, speak the truth to be rightlyadvised.”•“Boasting of one’s possessions displeases Allah” and•“Co-operate with one another, and have no grudge nor jeal-ously.”Many accolades were given to Hazrat Abu Bakr ( R.A.), oneof which by Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) was :”HazratAbu Bakr (R.A.) is the best of human beings save the proph-ets. He will be my companion on the cistern of Kawthar.Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A.) is for paradise.” Brothers and sistersdo not hesitate in adopting Hazrat Abu Bakr’s (R.A.) lifestylewhich he displayed so admirably that caused many a cup torunneth over with joy and excitement. Jump on his band-wagon. Gains to accrue. Allah to be on one’s side.

access to these devices, according to a new 2016 study led byresearcher Ben Carter, PhD, Msc from King’s College London.Previous research suggests that 72 per cent of children and 89per cent of adolescents have at least one device in their bed-rooms and most are used near bedtime. This new research, pub-lished in JAMA Pediatrics, is a review of 20 existing studies fromfour continents, involving more than 125,000 children aged 6-19(with an average age of 15). The use of media devices within 90minutes of going to sleep was associated with an increased like-lihood of inadequate sleep quantity, poor sleep quality, and ex-cessive daytime sleepiness. The presence of a smartphone ortablet in the bedroom, even without use, was associated with anincreased likelihood of poor sleep. Because of the nature of so-cial media and instant messaging, children are continuously fo-cused on devices in their environment, even when they are notactively using them. It is thought that screen-based media de-vices negatively affect sleep by delaying or interrupting sleep time,by psychologically stimulating the brain, and by affecting sleepcycles and sleep quality. Sleep disturbance in childhood is knownto have adverse effects on health, including poor diet, obesity, sedentary behavior, lower immunity, stunted growth, and mentalhealth issues. Please monitor your children’s exposure to suchmedia devices to prevent these potentially harmful effects.

Dear A’ishah: My friend and I have been friends for over 10years. We get along well and enjoy each other’s company. Re-cently we have been arguing a lot about minor things that some-how turn into big issues. It is very stressful and it has taken a tollon our relationship. A’ishah, would you like to weigh in?

Sincerely, Quick to ArgueDear Quick to Argue: Disagreements are a natural part of friend-ship and relationship. No two people can see the world exactlythe same 100% of the time. We need to take time to think aboutthe cause of the argument, what biases we bring and what needseach person has to be filled. Try to stay calm and respectful ofeach other and communicate in a loving manner to resolve theissue. The Prophet (SAW) said, “The most hated person in thesight of Allah is the most quarrelsome person of the opponents.”Get acquainted with “Ask A’ishah”, the provocative column thatanswers inquiries from readers who seek her advice and narra-tions based upon the authentic Hadith of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). It’s scholarly, inquisitive and contains witty, sage ad-vice to husbands, wives, teenagers, families and everyone else inbetween. “Ask A’ishah” is featured exclusively in Al Hikmat Maga-zine.

Don’t think that by being alone, youaren’t able to bring change. Very goodoutcomes can be obtained even by onlyone individual. Whether you are a stateofficial, a think thank fellow, a house-wife or a student, there are always thingsyou can do if you employ and follow yourmoral conscience. What matters most isto take action and do it without any de-lay. Whether it’s one person or a smallcommunity, change can be made, and theimpact can be tremendous. discovered a tunnel dug deep underneath leading to the prophet’s grave. He immedi-ately ordered them arrested and started questioning them. Their disclosure came toeveryone as a complete shock. The two men revealed that they were Christian spiesand were dispatched and funded for a special mission by the Christian kings to enterthe prophet’s grave and take his body away. The Sultan ordered them beheaded rightaway. In some commentaries, it is said that the Sultan went in the tunnel alone andcame across the body of the holy prophet (SAW). He could see his foot which hekissed, covered and then he came out and ordered the tunnel closed immediately. It isalso said that these two men were ready to take the body that night. Once the tunnelwas closed, the Sultan ordered a deep channel dug around the prophet’s grave andordered it filled with molten lead and copper to protect his (SAW) grave from anyfuture mischievous attempts by anyone forever. Are not all of our cities, certainly all of our churches, and nodoubt each and every one of us, called to be people of compas-sion? However, we must be open to encounter “the other” andbe willing to learn from them. I am reminded of my Old Tes-tament Professor (Sr. Dianne Bergant) who once preached onthis Gospel and said, “The reign of God went in search of theoutsider. It is so typical of God to be untypical. Crossingboundaries before us, the power of God moves us out of our-selves and our narrow worlds. The outsider, in the hands ofJesus becomes our teacher. May we always be open to learnand share SHALOM…PEACE…SALAAM. As many Christiansenter the most Sacred time of their Church Year (LENT), andas many received ashes on their foreheads and the followingwords were proclaimed, “REMEMBER THOU ART DUST,AND UNTO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN,”…perhaps thiscan be a reminder to all of us, no matter what race, faith, background…we have all come from our ONE GOD, and willall return to that ONE GOD. What perhaps is most important,is what we do during the “in-between” time.

Where is hunger the worst?Asia: 525.6 million Sub-Saharan Africa: 214 millionLatin America and the Caribbean: 37 millionHow can we ever face Allah (SWT) and when questionedwhether we helped any of the 795 million hungry people, manymay or may not have the answer that is pleasing to Allah (SWT).Some will be tongue tied and searching for an adequate an-swer. We are all accountable to help out our needy brothers, sisters and families in humanity. We can help in so many ways, primarily by making dua constantly for those who need help, volunteering with humanitarian organization whose goals areto prevent and alleviate human suffering and poverty, volun-teer at the soup kitchen, sponsor a meal at the centers that areset up to house and feed the needy and less fortunate, and yourfinancial donations whatever it is makes a big difference tothose in need. Sometimes, we feel, we don’t have enough togive, if 10,000 people give $1.00, that is $10,000. Do notdismiss the reward of giving, regardless of the amount. Wecannot only live in our little cocoon and provide for our familyand friends, there is a bigger purpose why Allah (SWT) blessedus with more. It is part of our test and and we all want to passwhatever test comes our way. May Allah (SWT) continue tobless us and guide us to give more to assist our brothers andsisters who badly need our kind support. May Allah (SWT)alleviate the suffering of all our brothers, sisters and childrenall over the world. Aameen.

“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is the protection of a fundamental human right,

the right to dignity and a decent life.”

When my forehead touched the floor of the Kaaba on my secondrakaat, I could feel a gust of positive energy passing throughmy entire body and the experience was something out of thisworld. It was a feeling of being blessed, being fortunate enoughto pray inside the holy Kaaba and being able to make dua in theholiest, sacred sites in the world. I completed my two rakaatprayer with the highest spiritual connection I had everexperienced in my life, Alhamdulilah. After this I started makingdua thinking of my deceased parents, sister, brother and all myrelatives who had passed away. I asked Almighty Allah for theirforgiveness and pleaded to give them Jannatul Firdous. Thiswas the best place for me to make dua right inside the holyKaaba where the spiritual connection was at its highest and Ifelt nearer to Almighty Allah more than ever before. I rememberedmany of my family members, friends and associates who havepassed away and also asked Almighty Allah for the forgivenessof the deceased from the Muslim ummah. I prayed for ourbeloved Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), hiscompanions, their family members and thanked Allah forshowing mankind the way of life as taught and led by our belovedProphet. I prayed for the custodians of the two holy mosquesKing Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and for all the Imams of theholy mosques including Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rahman Al Sudais,Chairman & President of the General Presidency of Haramainand Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Al Khuzaim, Vice President of theGeneral Presidency of Haramain and all the employees of thetwo holy mosques. I prayed to Allah to help alleviate the miseryof Muslims worldwide especially the Muslims undergoing greatdifficulty in the lands of Syria, Iraq, Burma, Palestine and otherplaces. I prayed for the refugees and asked Allah to give them asolution and guide them to lead a normal life. I prayed for worldpeace and peaceful coexistence among the people of differentfaiths. I also prayed for my twin brother Mohamed Muyeenuddinwho has been all along my support in my life both at work andfamily. I prayed for my dear wife and all that she has done andsacrificed for me all along in our married life. I prayed for mybrothers and their wives, my nieces, nephews and all my relativesand also I prayed for my friends, my colleagues at work andfor my business “Divine Connect” and its employees. I alsoprayed for my brothers and sisters at our West Palm BeachMosque, Al Amin Center Mosque and Darul Uloom in Florida. Ittook me over 15 minutes for me to complete my duas andAlhamdulilah, I did not forget anyone at that moment as Iremembered all the important people in my life and the ummahand I made dua for everyone in general, Alhamdulilah. I got upfrom my dua and then prayed another two rakaat prayer facingthe south, two rakaat facing the east, two rakaat facing thewest. In total, I prayed four prayers of two rakaat each in allthe four directions Alhamdulilah. I realized that inside the Kaabais the only place in the entire planet where you can literallystand in one spot and pray in any direction.

The Qu’raan was revealed in the night ofpower, during the time when ProphetMohammed (SAW) was performingItikaf! Prophet Mohammed (SAW) madeit a priority to perform Itikaf everyRamadan. And please be aware brothersand sisters, Itikaf can be conducted byboth men and women. In Surah Maryam(Chapter 19), Maryam (RI) was the firstwoman granted this privilege. As notedin Surah Maryam, during her time inItikaf, performed for the remembranceand pleasure of Allaah (SWT), food wouldautomatically appear for her nourishment.Angel Jibreel also appeared before her andwas commanded by Allaah (SWT) to tellher that she will be the mother of babyboy. Furthermore, when Maryam (RI)had the miracle baby and was being ques-tioned and attacked by people, Allaah(SWT) instructed her not to talk. Andwhat happened? She pointed to the babyand the baby said – “Abdullaah”: I am theservant of Allaah. It dispelled all otherconversations. As Muslims, we are allencouraged to practice Itikaf. It is partof our Ibaadah. It’s such a humbling andprofusely pious act: one that renews ourfaith, and increases our spiritual aware-ness and oneness with Allaah (SWT). Itis certainly an act that can result inmiracles!

This is a clear proof that for socialchanges, Islam advocates the evolution-ary or gradual method, rather than therevolutionary or radical method.Tenth Principle: (To be pragmatic incontroversial matters). During the writ-ing of Hudaibiyya treaty, the Prophet(pbuh) dictated these words: “This (agree-ment) is by Muhammad, the Messengerof God.” The Quraishi delegate raised ob-jections over these words. The ProphetSAW promptly changed the words (whichwere of critical importance to his missionas the Messenger of God) and ordered towrite simply, Muhammad son of Abdullah. He did this with hikmat and wisdom forthe greater good of the agreement and toavoid conflict knowing that victory was

After this I saw a table in the middle ofthe Kaaba and placed upon this beautifultable was rose water, very exclusive andbeautifully presented Attar perfumes andpieces of cloth. I was presented with theglorious opportunity of an Attar (perfume)dipped cloth to wash the inside walls ofthe holy Kaaba. I took the cloth and startedwiping the walls of the Kaaba with utmostrespect and humility. I would not have everwiped any surface on this earth like thisbefore. I remembered the days when Iused to clean our small home in our villagewhere I was born. However, this wasdifferent. I became overwhelmed andemotional. I made sure that every strokethat went from left to right and right toleft be perfect and I could see the shiningmarble gleaming with more brightness. Iwent to the table again and took anotherfour pieces of cloth and started wipingdifferent sections of the Kaaba with utmostcare. I was told that I could keep this Attarfilled cloths as a souvenir of my visit.

Alhamdulilah. The Kaaba measuresapproximately 50 feet (15.2 meters) high,35 feet (10.7 meters) wide and 40 feet(12.2 meters) long. Inside, the floor ismade of marble and limestone and hasthree pillars which glistens and gleams inall its splendor. A small altar or table is setbetween the columns and lamp like objectshang from the ceiling. The wall directlyadjacent to the entrance of the Kaaba hassix tablets inlaid with Arabic inscriptions, and there are several more tablets alongthe other walls. Along the upper half ofthe walls runs a green cloth embroideredwith gold Qur’anic verses which wasabsolutely breathtaking and a sight that isetched in my mind. The ceiling is of adarker color, similar in hue to the lowertrimming. A golden door, the Babut Taubah(Door of Repentance) on the right wall(right of the entrance) opens to anenclosed staircase that leads to a hatch, which itself opens to the roof. I spent themost electrifying 25 minutes of my entirelife inside the holy Kaaba. I took one lastfinal look around and then I exited the doorof the Kaaba with great humility and madea small prayer that Almighty Allah blessand protect our Muslim Ummah. These were the principles throughwhich the Prophet of Islam SAW gainedthat success which has been recognizedby historians as the supreme success ofthe greatest man to grace the face of thisearth, SAW. My friends, when we startliving Islam by following the dynamic yethumble character of the last Prophet SAW,and start living those values and good man-ners that he taught us, then the non-Mus-lims will be drawn to us by our uprightconduct and they will ask questions aboutIslam. When we explain this was the char-acter of the noble Prophet and the teach-ings of Islam, they will want to knowmore about Islam. It starts with you andme living Islam by obeying the commandsof God Almighty and by following theteachings of all His Prophets and in par-ticular His last Prophet Muhammad PBUHthe greatest man to ever grace this earth.May Allah God Almighty guide us and giveus the determination to follow the leader-ship, teachings and the character of thenoble Prophet Muhammad PBUH and toimplement good manners into our livesand the lives of our children and to sharewith all mankind.
