3Dear Girl Scouts,

Welcome to a great new season of exciting programs from the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, Inc.

We are delighted to present an all star line-up of programs and events over the coming year. In the following pages, you will find activities that will transform the long, hazy days of summer into action filled adventures, and add forever friendships and fun to fall and winter school days.

Over the past year, GSCBC has heard girls’ requests for more compelling, relevant and impact-driven experiences. As a result, we are offering new programs that include overnight camping and day time events at our new Science and Technology Lodge in Hockessin. There, science and technology come alive through innovative systems and features such as the amazing Weather Bug!

Only Girl Scouting provides life enriching, learning experiences that are powered by lots of fun in beautiful indoor and outdoor program centers, plus educational activities, field trips, and the most wonderful camping experiences you’ll find anywhere.

More girls are registering for camp than ever before! Join the fun. Sign up for a Girl Scout program and get going on the road to new friends and a new future! In Girl Scouting, we build girls of courage, confidence and character.

In 2008, we registered nearly 18,500 girls to be Girl Scouts while the number of Girl Scout campers grew by 3 percent. Through the dedication of nearly 6,000 volunteers and staff, and with the generous support of donors, girls can grow in the New Girl Scouts’ Leadership Experience — Discover, Connect and Take Action.

As we continue our journey together, we pledge to continue to celebrate the great traditions in Girl Scouting while moving toward the empowering New Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

It has been an extraordinary and exciting first year as Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer. We pledge to help GSCBC navigate the bold new Girl Scout Movement and remain a leading advocate for girls throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Gloria P. Jeffers Anne T. Hogan Board Chair Chief Executive Officer

Fall Product Sales ProgramDuring the fall of every year, Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council conducts a Fall Product Sales Program. This is a family and friends program, where your Girl Scout will be taking orders for nuts/candy and magazine/books/cds directly from your family members and friends. The combined QSP/Nut Program will provide your Girl Scout’s Troop funds for more activities and trips during the first half of the year.

Did you know that the average US family spends about $130 each year for magazine subscriptions and over 98% of that money leaves our community? With the Fall Product Sales Program, 42% of all items sold is retained to subsidize Girl Scout programs at Chesapeake Bay Council. Of the Council’s 42%, 15% will stay with the Troop to fund Troop activities planned by the girls in partnership with the adult Leaders. So the money stays here in our communities to help us provide the very best for your Girl Scout!

The Fall Product Sales Program is a wonderful way to work with your Girl Scout to help build confidence, set goals, learn values, handle money, and acquire marketing and social skills. Girl Scouting would not be possible without the support of family members like you.

Order/Renew your family and friends’ favorite magazines Your Girl Scout contacts family and friends asking them to renew or subscribe to their favorite magazines. She also has the option to contact family and friends via email through QSP’s on-line magazine ordering system. Your Girl Scout will earn Troop proceeds and recognitions for each subscription purchased.

Friendly Referrals using Address AdventureYour Girl Scout can ask family and friends living in other communities to help support Girl Scouts by completing the special referral coupons in the mail-out booklets. QSP will mail information twice which shows them how to purchase their favorite publications at the same low prices.

Gourmet Nuts and CandyThe nut and candy portion of the program provides your Girl Scout the opportunity to offer family and friends the option to support Girl Scouts by purchasing high-quality, delicious nuts and candy. The nuts and candies are attractively packaged, will be delivered before the Holidays and make thoughtful gifts or “thank you” presents.

Fall Product Sale Program Packets will be available from your Girl Scout’s Troop Leader in September 2009. Juliette Girl Scouts may contact their SU Fall Product Sales Manager or the Product Sales Specialist at 302-456-7150 ext. 7196

14DECEMBER 2009

A girl with a passion inspires everyone around her. She speaks in powerful ways about her dreams. She wants to do everything she can to create a better world. From Girl Scout Daisies who brighten a dark day for someone less fortunate to Girl Scout Ambassadors who change lives in profound ways, girls put Leadership skills into action.

With the 2010 Cookie Program, Girl Scouts across the country will be inspiring change. They will discover what matters most to them. They will connect with people in their communities, and they will use the power of Girl Scout Cookies to take action in their own neighborhoods and far beyond.

The Girl Scout Activity is Priceless Give your Girl Scout all the benefits of this unique Leadership program. There’s no substitute for giving your Girl Scout the exciting, enriching experience of the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Much more than a way to raise money, the Cookie Program is a hands-on Leadership and entrepreneurial program unlike any other in the world. Girls gain a wealth of essential skills, not from a book, but from real-life experiences that build a strong foundation for success. Many successful businesswomen and community Leaders say they got their start selling Girl Scout Cookies.

Families Play an Important Role Guide your girl toward the future with the fun and learning of Girl Scout Cookies.

Just mention Girl Scout Cookies, and most people will smile and remember their favorite variety. From Thin Mints to Samoas, Girl Scout Cookies hold a special place in the hearts of adults and girls alike.

16JANUARY 2010

The Cookie Club is an exciting, password-protected Web site where Girl Scouts of all ages learn first hand about the power of goal-setting. Girls go online to learn about goals, set goals, learn selling tips and track their progress with this fun, interactive tool. Older girls are automatically routed to a special version of the Cookie Club with a teen look.

Girls with goals go farThe Girl Scout Cookie Program is a valuable part of the Girl Scouting experience. It’s a unique way for your girl to develop self-confidence, learn early business skills and experience the success of goal-setting. When you help your girl set a challenging goal and reach it, she learns she has the power to achieve her dreams. These lessons in Leadership will last far beyond the Cookie season.

Join by following these easy steps: STEP 1: Return signed permission form to receive girl ID and passwordCookie Club membership begins with your girl’s adult volunteer. She will guide the girls as they choose an exciting group goal, create the group’s account and enter the group’s goal into the web site. The goal sales number is divided evenly among the girls. Girls can later edit their individual goal numbers on their personal pages, if desired.

The adult volunteer will ask you to return a signed parent permission form. Only when a girl has returned this form will she receive her girl ID and password. Now she’s ready to join the Cookie Club!

STEP 2: Go online to join the Cookie ClubA Girl Scout is always encouraged to go online with an adult. She will visit www.littlebrownie.com and click on the Cookie Club area.

She then enters her girl ID and password, provided by her adult volunteer. If it’s her first time visiting the site, she will be prompted to complete a Safety Certification. A girl may not enter the Cookie Club unless she succeeds in her certification, which helps assure her understanding of online and selling safety.

When she is Safety Certified, the girl becomes a Cookie Club member. From her personal page, she will enter her sales and watch the goal-tracker rise toward her goal. She can learn about goals, modify her cookie goal or learn selling tips. You may wish to guide your girl toward setting a personal learning goal in addition to her sales goal. For example, she may decide to make all her own changes this year, set up a spreadsheet to keep track of all her sales, or work on some corporate presentations.

STEP 3: Keep up the Cookie Club funRemind your Girl Scout to check back often to enter her sales and see her goal-tracker rise. The adult volunteer can use this information to keep group motivation and excitement high as girls work toward their goals.

Is the Cookie Club safe?Yes, and it is approved by Girl Scouts of the USA. All girls must turn in a signed parent/guardian permission form before they can receive their girl ID and password. The first time they visit the Cookie Club, girls are required to become Safety Certified before they can access the site. Girls will not sell cookies online or reveal personal information.

The Cookie Club is a fun, interactive twist on the Cookie Program that today’s tech savvy girls will love. With your support, your girl can have at her fingertips important tools she can use to meet her goals.

Cookie Club – For Goal-Getters Only!

World Thinking Day February 22, 2010

World Thinking Day was first created in 1926 at the fourth Girl Guide/Girl Scout

International Conference, held at Girl Scouts of the USA’s Camp Edith Macy (now called Edith Macy

Conference Center). Attendees decided that there should be a special day when Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all around

the world think of each other and give thanks and appreciation to their “sister” Girl Scouts. Thinking Day is often celebrated with internationally-themed events, with Troops choosing to explore the cultures of other nations by learning their style of dress, games commonly played, the food and recipes eaten, and much more! February 22 was chosen as the date for Thinking Day because it was the birthday of both Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, and his wife Olave, who served as World Chief Guide. This Thinking Day, remember and connect with your fellow Girl Scouts!

20MARCH 2010Celebrating the Birthday of Girl ScoutingGirl Scout Birthday - March 12

“I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world…” Juliette Gordon Low spoke these words while developing her idea for the Girl Scouts. March 12, 2010 marks the 98th anniversary of the day Low officially registered the organization’s first 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia, in 1912. Low’s niece, Daisy Gordon, was the first girl to be registered as an official Girl Scout in the United States. Low believed that all girls should be given opportunities to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. She advocated for girls’ involvement outside of the home, and encouraged girls to pursue careers in science, environmentalism, politics and more.

Originally called Girl Guides, the organization’s name was changed to its present form in 1913. The first Girl Scout camp was held in the summer of 1912 and by 1920, there were nearly 70,000 Girl Scouts in the United States. Today, nearly 4 million girls and adults are active Girl Scouts, and 50 million women in the U.S. are Girl Scout alumnae.

26JUNE 2010You’ll GROW to love Girl Scout Summer Camp!Camping is a great way to build new skills, gain a greater sense of community, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Whether you go for a day, a week, or longer, Girl Scout camping gives you an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun. Every girl should have a chance to camp!

Our Council has four beautiful camps with a wide variety of amenities and fun program opportunities. We have these sites so all members can learn more about themselves, each other, and about nature.

Come and visit, you can take a walk, jog, have a picnic, and/or come for a fun program. If you are interested in reserving a building or site it’s easy and financially reasonable! Where else can you sleep 25 of your coolest friends away from home for the same price as a one night stay in an average hotel room? For more information please check out the camp section on our website or talk with the Camp/Event Registrar at 800-341-4007 or email [email protected].

Camp ToddCamp Todd is one of our largest and most unique camp properties. Located in Denton, MD, it’s a place to get away from the rush of every day life. It has a picturesque lake, nice hiking trails, and cozy lodges, tents, screened in Adirondacks and a spacious program center and pavilion. The camp offers fun programs such as swimming, archery, canoeing, kayaking, orienteering and much more. Each site sleeps between 16 and 36 guests. You will find Adirondacks, platform tents, cozy air conditioned cabins, and a large multi-use Program Center.
