Rawhiti Community Sport hopes to win support tonight for a $3.9 million new sport facility in the east.

The group wants Burwood-Pega-sus Community Board support for its lease application, which would allow it to build the complex at Rawhiti Domain.

It will put its case to the commu-nity board tonight.

The facility would include space for clubrooms, a social club, and an indoor hall which could be used for a range of sports and functions.

The group was in the process of finalising plans for the facility in 2010, but was put on hold after the earthquakes.

Board member Thea Mickell said

that because of “ballooning” con-struction costs, the cost of the ini-tial plans had doubled.

“Initially our plans were priced at about $5 million, but we know now it would cost twice that. So we knew we needed to think critically, to come up with something achiev-able.”

New plans have been created for the facility, which would be de-

signed as a “sprung structure”.That would involve using a “ten-

sioned membrane” to create the structure of the building, rather than using traditional construction techniques.

The cost of the building is es-timated at $3.9 million using the technique.

Shirley Primary School staff hope new traffic lights at a crossing outside the school will keep the pupils safe.

Principal Sylvia Fidow said there had been three accidents involving children outside the school over the past eight years.

She said the worst case was about five years ago, when a driver went straight through the pedestrian crossing in spite of both barrier arms being out.

A child, who was crossing at the time, was hit and spent

the night in hospital with minor injuries.

Lights were approved for the crossing four years ago, but were delayed by the earthquakes.

Ms Fidow said the behav-iour of drivers was still a problem.

“We have ongoing is-sues daily with cars driving through and not stopping. People just drive too fast there.”

She said installing traffic lights had worked at other schools, and she believed the lights would solve the problem.

• From page 1However, because the

plans have changed, the group has had to re-apply for a lease and consent from the city council.

Ms Mickell said the group needed to confirm the lease before it could make any more progress on the facility.

She said the group would be able to expand its programmes in the community once the facility was built.

“There’s really no end to what we can deliver, and the services we can ensure are available to the community of the east – we just need the facilities to do it.

“We would like to be able to offer indoor league, and we could be creating fun activities in the evenings for the locals. The more we’re empowered the more we can achieve.”

She said the focus of the group since the earthquakes had been to make sure

children had access to sports programmes in the east.

“We feel awfully proud of the other things we’re achieving out there. Some of classes, netball and rugby in particular, have actually increased in numbers since the earthquakes.”

She said the group hoped to get support from the community board tonight to help it achieve a lease “as soon as possible”.

New Brighton residents hope to raise enough money to pay for murals to be painted on roadside electricity cabinets, inspired by a Chorus Project.

Two cabinets in New Brighton have been painted as part of the Chorus Cabinet Art programme, which has already funded 24 mu-rals in Christchurch.

The local cabinets, which were painted by New Brighton artist Richard Baker, are on the corner of Bower Ave and Marriotts Rd, and the corner of Palmers Rd and Bowhill Rd.

The murals were funded as a way to beautify the cabinets, and discourage graffiti.

The budget for the programme was limited, and only the cabi-nets most often targeted by tag-gers were painted.

But members of the Peoples Independent Republic of New Brighton group hope to have more cabinets painted through private fundraising.

Group founder Paul Zaanen said graffiti was a significant is-sue in the area, and there were several more cabinets in the area which he described as “eyesores”.

He said the group planned to look at fundraising options to get some of the boxes painted as soon as possible.

“We can all get cracking, and

if they’ve got a limited budget we can do some fundraising to get it going.

“The point of the people’s re-public is that we don’t have to wait for all the normal council processes, we can just go ahead.”

Because no official leaders of the group have been appointed, he said that people who did the fundraising would be respon-sible for deciding how to al-locate it.

Chorus paid $1000 for each cabinet to the artists commis-sioned to paint them, as well as covering the cost of materials.

Community relations adviser Jo Seddon said the company would pay the cost of materials for any further cabinets painted, if the community could fund the artists’ fee.

She said the company would like to fund more cabinet art in Christchurch, but would not be able to do that until budgets were decided in the next finan-cial year.

Updates on the New Brighton fundraising efforts will be posted on the Peoples Independent Re-public of New Brighton Facebook page.

More than 1200 teachers were nominated in the first week of the New Zealand’s Most Inspiring Teacher campaign, with 360 nominations for Canterbury teachers. The annual competition is organised by Warehouse Stationery, with more than $40,000 worth of travel, stationery and technology prizes awarded to the teachers who receive the highest number of votes. Some of the local nominations and comments are below. People can vote for their teachers at www.inspiringteachers.co.nz. Voting closes on Sunday.

• Margaret Dwan – Shirley Intermediate School

She is so encouraging she thinks outside of the box like original ideas and different and unique things like we made our own totem poles that she made up with all these amazing ideas on them, she’s just so amazing she always inspires us to never give up on something you are determined to do I think she definitely deserves it.• Mario Williams – Linwood College

Super Mario, Mr Williams is the most inspirational teacher of the year, why, there are many reasons. 1. He takes study groups in his own time to help the students in the school pass the year. 2. Mario is an extreme-ly fun and enthusiastic person to be around, if it’s doing school work, or just hanging out you always know that you can go to his of-fice. But his speeches, his speeches are abso-lutely phenomenal, he has helped me as well as the rest of the school inspiring us to live our lives to the fullest and never give up.• Rebecca Wilson – Bromley School

Rebecca is amazing, we moved away at the

start of the year but still keep in contact. She wants to know how my son is doing and still helps out with his learning. He went back for a week while my husband and I were out of the country and she made it easy for him to be there and man did he love it. I’ve never met another teacher with as much passion and love for her students. Her attitude is so positive that you can’t help getting caught up in her teaching which has positive effects at home. She does so much extra as well I’m not sure how she finds the hours in the day to get it all done. If you ever tell her what an amazing job she does she always says it’s because she has great kids, they’re the ones that make her a great teacher. She is just amazing.• Averil Metcalfe – Shirley School

Having taught along side Averil and having the pleasure of relieving in her classroom, this nomination is extremely deserving. Averil is a dedicated genuine professional who is totally invested in the children she teaches. She provides positive feedback to all, has firm and fair boundar-ies and always has a variety of enriching activities for the children in her class, she is the staff rep on the board of trustees and is focused on achieving common goals for the school. Her learning programme is thought out with care and attention to individual needs, she is extremely dedicated and is usu-ally the first person at school in the morn-ing. Averil is a wonderful team member and is dedicated to the junior team, she is always willing to share advice and provide excellent and creative ideas. Averil is an amazing role model and the children in her class are al-ways cheerful and happy, they are willing to please her and create wonderful work. Aver-il is a deserving nomination and it would be wonderful if she were to win this honour.

With less than six months until Central New Brighton School is closed for good, new principal Tricia Carroll has a big task on her hands.

She took on the role last week, after for-mer principal Toni Burnside left to start a new job at Banks Avenue School.

Ms Carroll will now be responsible for or-ganising the closure of Central New Brigh-ton School, letting go of some of the staff and making the transition to the new merged Rawhiti School smooth for the pupils.

And she does not yet know if she will have a job at the end of that process.

Although she said it was an uncertain time for staff, the former deputy principal was upbeat about the future.

“We are positive about the move. It’s ex-citing, and it’s a wee bit daunting, but we’re working through things systematically.”

Ms Carroll has worked for seven years at Central New Brighton School, and said she already knew the pupils and families well.

The former principal, Ms Burnside, said she believed Ms Carroll was the right person for the job.

“Trish Carroll is a very talented and skilled leader and she has worked that role before, so I believe she will do very well.”

Ms Burnside said she did not want to leave midway through the process, but did not want to miss the opportunity to work at Banks Avenue School.

She said she did not apply for a role at the merged Rawhiti School.

“I wanted it to be an equal playing field. For the staff harmony, because it is going to be a new school, it was important that some-one neutral was appointed.”

Staff at Rawhiti School, which has been formed through the merger of the Central New Brighton, Freeville and North New Brighton schools, will be appointed this month.

Former Springston School principal Liz Weir has already been appointed to lead the new school, but final staffing decisions are not expected to be made until November.

Ms Carroll said she would like to work in the new merged school, but did not expect to find out if she would be offered a job until later in the year.

The Salvation Army go into the community with no agenda, committed to building trust and developing relationships with people. Drop into the campervan or call the church o ce on 323 8257. Open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

The Salvation Army - out and about in Christchurch NorthThe Salvation Army have always

been an integral part of the community helping in the day-to-day struggles which many

face. ey have a name synonymous with practical Christianity, deeply committed to making a di erence in the lives of the people around them.

We are beginning to develop and implement ways of serving the community in Christchurch North. “We want people to be aware that we are here in Belfast, happy to go out and work alongside others whenever it is necessary,” says Gill Waugh.

e Salvation Army helps in a variety of ways, packing up houses for EQC repairs, taking people to a hospital appointment, or even advocating for people when they need support. e Salvation Army campervan is about connecting with people wherever they are in the community. Every ursday it is parked behind the Family Store in Cranford Street so feel free to come and chat with one of the team. e campervan carries helpful information or it may be about just having someone to talk to over a co ee.

It can be di cult to approach an agency for help when someone is in the hardest time of their life. e Salvation Army o er Advocacy support, working alongside government agencies WINZ and Housing Corp to facilitate people who need help

in the accommodation process, not to duplicate what is already being done. People o en do not know how to access what is available.

A positive e ect of the trauma caused by the Canterbury earthquakes has been the community feeling which has grown. “Streets have become neighbourhoods again,” says Neil Waugh. “We want this to continue to grow, building on the strong feeling of community which came amid the devastation.” We want to support the strengthening of families, neighbourhoods where people feel safe, valued and are connecting with each other. ey recently arranged a Community Day for the Northcote area in the Northcote School grounds. Watch out for the next one on October.

8 Hardy St, New Brighton – phone 382 5742 – [email protected] – Like us on Facebook• We are proud to present to the community our monthly review of events.

Our Monday Golden Oldie Films for September are The Bulldog Breed, 1960; Gold Diggers of 1933; Mata Hari, 1931; Magic Box, 1951; and Four Feathers, 1939. Come early for a cuppa and a chat, and the films start at 1.30pm. Admission costs a $2 donation.

During August, the recruitment of new volunteer members motivated the museum board to institute a monthly volunteer meeting, to discuss volunteer projects. Members have been busy digitising video archives of early New Brighton material for display on our new television screen, and we are soon to acquire photographs from the New Brighton Power Boat Club. Our annual calendar is nearly finished for fund-raising, and this year features photographs of New Brighton from local books. This will be available for purchase at the museum, as well as at the New Brighton School Re-union. We were pleased to receive original

photographs of the New Brighton Silver Band from the 1960s, and we have found a piece of the old QE II track for display.• Did you know?

The QE II stadium and recreation centre was built in 1963. Prior to this, the land was used by the New Brighton Trotting Club, which moved from the beach in 1886, as its popularity grew and ladies ruined their dresses in the sand. It was leased to the club by Thomas Free, the owner of the Bower Hotel. The judge would watch races from the top of a rum barrel, and patrons were fed from the Bower Hotel kitchen. The New Brighton Trotting Club held the NZ Cup every year until the club was amalgam-ated with Addington Raceway in 1998. Christchurch hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1974, the smallest city to do so at the time, and QE II stadium was upgraded to host track, field and swimming events. The New Brighton Museum is home to the original outfits worn by volunteers. The museum is open from 10am to noon on Mondays, and every other day from 1pm to 3pm. We take bookings for school groups and community functions.

Volunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing.

Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.

Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.

With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”

This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.

“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”

If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

FOOD

Menu for menThe ultimate Kiwi beer batterServes 4 Ingredients1½ cups Self raising flour1 tsp Salt1 Egg, whisked until fluffy330ml Beer, very cold4 Fish fillets, fresh1 Plain flour, for coating1½ Ltr Vegetable oil, for deep frying

DirectionsHeat the oil in a deep pot or deep fryer to 180 deg C. Have your fish fillets, coating flour, tongs and a tray lined with paper tow-els ready to go. Place the self-raising flour and salt in a bowl, make a well and pour the egg into the centre, pour over the beer and whisk until a smooth batter forms. Dip the fillets one at a time into the flour,

shake off excess then dip into the batter. Carefully lower it into the hot oil, and drag it backwards and forwards for a few seconds before letting it go — this will help to seal the batter. Cook for 2-4 minutes, depending on the thickness of each fillet, until crisp and gold-en. Lift out of the oil and drain on paper tow-els, season with salt and serve with lemon.

Pot roast beef brisketSpice rub1 tsp Cumin seeds1 tsp Coriander seeds3 Cardamom pods1 Star anise1 Tbsp Peppercorns2 Tbsp Espresso coffee, freshly ground1 Tbsp Sea salt3 Tbsp Brown sugar, use dark brown sugarPot roast2½ kgs Brisket, bones on and excess fat re-moved, ask your butcher to cut you a piece2 Carrots, roughly chopped2 Celery stalks, roughly chopped1 Onion, roughly chopped1 Orange, or lemon, freshly zested and juiced1 Garlic bulb5 Bay leaves1 bunch Fresh herbs, such as rosemary, thyme, tarragon1 Stock, or wine, cider or beer, enough to cover the meat

DirectionsSpice rubIn a hot pan, lightly toast cumin and cori-ander seeds with cardamom pods and star anise. Cool, add peppercorns and blitz in a spice grinder (or crush in a mortar and pes-tle) until finely ground. Mix ground spices with sea salt, freshly ground espresso and dark brown sugar. Mix together well and store in a sealed jar.MeatBrisket is a flavourful cut of meat from the

breast (or lower chest) of the beef. Con-taining a lot of connective tissue, brisket is perfect for slow roasting (allowing the col-lagen to gelatinise), resulting in a succulent tender roast.

Clean the meat again at home, leaving a small fat cap (about ½cm) on top of the meat. This will allow it to retain moisture while it slowly cooks. Liberally rub the meat all over with your favourite spice rub (see above).AromaticsIn a casserole or roasting dish just large enough to hold the meat, place carrots, celery stalks, and onion. Add a garlic, the orange or lemon zest and juice and fresh herbs.CookNestle the meat into the veges, add enough stock (wine, cider, or beer) to half cover the meat. Cover with the lid (or foil) and cook in a low oven (150 deg C or less) for 5-6 hours, basting frequently, until the meat is unctuous and giving.Serve

As a Sunday roast lunch; Slice the meat to a platter, ladle with the pan juices, and serve with a potato mash, mashed brussels sprout gratine and fresh green vegetables.

Southwestern style; Pull the meat and serve with sweetcorn bread, kumara cro-quettes, homemade baked beans, sauted kale or spinach, and coleslaw.

As a dipped sandwich; Butter thick slices of fresh white bread with yellow mustard. Add meat across half the slice, top with chopped pickles and a little apple and fennel slaw. Fold in half. Dip sandwich into hot pan juices to eat.

Reducing the injury risk

New Zealanders love their sport, whether it is competing in the Commonwealth Games or kicking a ball around the back

lawn.Players of any sport know that there is a risk

of injury and, if this does happen, the team at Muscle People can help you get moving again and back on to the field, court or bike.

Muscle People’s professional physiotherapists can not only help with an existing injury but also provide advice on how to prevent injuries and discuss ways to enhance your sports performance at any level.

“We can tailor a plan to help with a person’s individual performance to address any issues like strength, flexibility, breathing control or core stability,” says Laurie Moore from Muscle People.

Muscle People has two clinics conveniently

located at the YMCA in Hereford Street and at the YMCA at Bishopdale, where they are open late on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and on Saturday mornings.

Post-operative rehabilitation is also a specialty at Muscle People, says Laurie.

“By looking at specific exercises following surgery, recovery can be optimised so people can get back to normal as quickly as possible. Exercise can help patients to regain their strength, flexibility and functions.”

Muscle People’s physiotherapists are experienced in providing post-operative rehabilitation and can also liaise with the surgeon to determine any specific requirements based on the individual’s operation.

Common surgeries that would benefit from post-operative care by a

physiotherapist include shoulders, backs, knees and ankles. Surgical patients do not need a referral from a specialist to access exercise rehabilitation and post-operative physiotherapy.

“We do suggest, however, that people let their surgeon know that they would like to return for post-operative care at Muscle People,” says Laurie.

To book an appointment for your sports injury, to help with your performance on the field or if you would like to find out more about post-operative care, telephone Muscle People in the city on 961 0236 or at Bishopdale on 360 3606. More information about the physiotherapy clinic is available at www.musclepeople.co.nz.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opening night

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the story of a dysfunctional family at war with itself, premiered at The Elmwood Auditorium on August 22. The themes of greed, repression, toxic relationships remain as fresh and relevant as when Tennessee Williams penned it in 1955.

Produced by Canterbury Repertory Theatre and directed by Annette Searle, the fi rst night performance kept the audience enthralled with the cast’s delivery of the wit, dark humour and sarcasm contained in this play.

Acted at fl oor level rather than on a raised stage gave an intimacy and contact with the players which enhanced the effect of the production. Feelings ran high among the watchers who responded with appreciative applause.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEAT PUMPS

Enjoy the comfort of a Masport wood fi rein your home

Many housing companies o er a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to talk to

the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. is can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation.

Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy e cient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9kW of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added bene ts of cooling, dehumidifying and air ltration (great for people with allergies or asthma), bene ts no other heating appliance can o er.

Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular providing climate controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems.

Enviro Master Ltd are your air

conditioning and heat pump specialists and have been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now.

Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. is means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump.

Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as e ectively and e ciently as possible, resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. Adult Learners’ W e e k / H e T a n g a t a M ā t a u r a n g a

celebrates all adult learning whether it’s upskilling for a better job, preparing for further study, for improving life skills, working out your learning journey, learning how to organise with others, or having fun. Th is year, the week will be launched in Christchurch on September 8, with a focus on how the rebuild has encouraged women into trades. Th e launch, hosted by CPIT, will be held at the new Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre and will feature women currently undergoing trade training.

Th is country has a strong culture of adult learning, and every year tens of thousands of people take part in some form of community-based learning. Dr Jo Lake, Director of Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa, says many communities in Aotearoa have been transformed through community-based learning initiatives provided in and by educational institutions including schools, NGOs, community houses or on marae. She says, “It’s not just technical skills that are enhanced through learning. When adult learners share their stories, they talk about improvements in speaking, reading and writing English, understanding numbers and speaking Māori. Th ey also talk about benefi ts like better self-esteem, greater tolerance,

enhancing social cohesion, addressing ecological concerns, increased confi dence and improved career prospects.

Participation in communities is another outcome related to learning. Learners oft en want to give something back. Th e Government priorities for Adult and Community Education (ACE) include literacy, numeracy, English language (ESOL), te Reo Māori and sign language. Providers all over this country off er learning in these core areas and also in many others. Courses not eligible for funding are oft en run with experts contributing on koha or on a low fee, or totally voluntary basis.

Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Mātauranga is organised by ACE Aotearoa and is supported by the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO. It incorporates International Literacy Day on September 8.

Learning in your older years Aoraki Polytechnic

A practical training programme through Aoraki Polytechnic will ensure Virginia Smith achieves her dream of becoming a beauty

therapist.Th e busy mum is studying towards

her Certifi cate in Beauty Th erapy at the polytechnic’s Christchurch campus.

At the end of the 34-week programme she will open her own business from home.

Virginia said the hands-on course was providing all the skills she needed to achieve her goal.

“Th is course is covering all the bases. It’s a combination of practical and theory. And it’s really fun. Th ere is such a variety. We are learning new things each day,’’ says Virginia.

Topics covered on the course include massage, body and facial electrical treatments, skin care and makeup, waxing, manicure and pedicures, anatomy and physiology, and business and professional conduct.

Virginia enjoyed the practical side the most. During the programme, students had the opportunity to work with real clients, manage bookings and get direct feedback by running beauty clinics.

Aoraki Polytechnic ticked all the boxes for Virginia and came well recommended from

friends who had studied there. Th e timetable was also fl exible enough to fi t around caring for her two children.

Prior to having children, Virginia had worked as a dental assistant and had trained as an interior d e s i g n e r . However, the lure of beauty therapy was strong.

“As I got older I decided it was time to do something for me. Th is is something I really wanted to do.’’

Last year she completed the polytechnic’s Certifi cate in Beauty Skills programme, which is an introduction to the Beauty Th erapy course.

“Th at course was really fantastic and I got a taste of what the Beauty Th erapy course would be like. I realised I could handle being a mum and studying at the same time.’’

Virginia had already set up a room in her house as a clinic. Th e doors will open for business once she graduates.

Focus on the Middle East at WEA

Educating adults about the world around them and helping to increase understanding of international aff airs is all part of

the wide-ranging education programme off ered by the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA). While most Term 3 courses at the WEA are well underway two half-day Saturday seminars in September focus attention on the Middle East.

‘Th e Middle East, between Modernity and Traditionalism’ is the topic for Saturday, September 6, and will provide a brief historical background of the Middle East region since the emergence of Islam to the present day. Th e seminar will include the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century; colonisation and post-colonisation

leading on to contemporary history; and the adoption of modernity. Th e tutor for the seminar is Karim Pourhamzavi, a post-graduate student in political science and sociology at the University of Canterbury.

Th e topic for the seminar on September 20 is the BBC documentary In Search of Palestine: Edward Said’s return home, introduced by Karim Pourhamzavi. Edward Said (1935-2003) was a Palestinian-American whose academic works, especially his book Orientalism (1978) had a major infl uence on the humanities and Middle Eastern studies.

To register for these seminars or to fi nd out more about the courses on off er at the WEA email [email protected], phone 366 0285 or go online to cwea.org.nz.

In 1796 a community of American settlers in Ohio developed into a town. The elders decided to call their town Cleaveland, after General Moses

Cleaveland, a land surveyor who marked out the town’s boundaries.

In 1831 the town’s first proper newspaper was formed. The editor wanted to make a big splash with the first edition, so he proclaimed the formation of The Cleveland Advertiser.

There wasn’t enough width on the front page to put the big masthead type in one line, so he made an instant decision to leave out the first A in Cleaveland. No one seemed to notice and the incorrect spelling stuck to the newspaper and city it served.

“Checking spelling is always important,” said Brian Morris, Principal of New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Whether a mistake is deliberate or accidental, the impact can last for years.

“That’s what also happened to the town of Novi. When stage coaches rolled out of Detroit there were designated stopping points where passengers could alight or board the coach. The sixth stopping point had a simple trail sign ‘No VI’. Over time people who didn’t understand Roman numerals simply called the place NOVI.”

Fastidious spellers who want to become professional proofreaders and book editors should request the free information pack from NZIBS Proofreading Institute. Telephone 0800 801 994. One year of training

will enable Dip.Edit qualified people to work for publishers worldwide. Getting paid in NZ$, UK£ and US$ has its benefits.

“Being 12 hours ahead of Europe gives our proofreaders a huge advantage,” said Morris. “Publishing is a 24/7 industry. Our people get paid ‘overnight service’ rates even though they mostly work 10am to 2pm in New Zealand. This suits parents with children at school.”

Journalism training is also available.

Although many things have changed over the past 60 years at the Christchurch School of Music, the focus on fostering a lifelong

love of music has remained constant.Adult students are now an integral part

of the CSM community. Many of our adult students enjoy weekly instrumental, theory or vocal lessons, but we also offer fortnightly options or blocks of lessons to cater for students who are too busy to practise regularly. Our “Learn with a Friend” option is popular with adults who prefer learning alongside someone they already know.

At CSM, we encourage our students to play in an orchestra or ensemble. Playing with others is great fun and helps students to feel a part of our fabulous musical community. Our

range of Saturday and evening ensembles is extensive and varied, and include orchestras, rock bands, jazz combos, concert bands, wind ensembles and chamber music.

If affordability is an issue, CSM can provide discounts of up to 50 per cent through funding provided by the Canterbury Community Trust. Visit www.csm.org.nz or phone the office on 366 1711 to find out what we can offer you.

Adult Learners’ Week at the Risingholme Community Centre

Risingholme is proud to announce that the Risingholme pottery classes will host a group pottery exhibition during Adult Learners’

Week. The exhibition will feature SOUP can mugs, SOUP wall packets and other SOUP-related items.

The theme SOUP is inspired by an American fundraising idea where ceramic students make bowls and then have an exhibition to auction or sell them off.

The exhibition will be from September 5 to 7 at the Risingholme Community Centre.

Risingholme continues to offers a wide

range of short courses to upskill, sharpen the mind and meet new people and socialise. With a large pool of tutors, new courses are added through the year.

For more information on classes at Risingholme, Riccarton High School, Christchurch Girls’ High School, Shirley Boys’ High School and Hornby High School, contact the Risingholme Community Centre at 332 7359 or email [email protected].

Miracle weight

loss fruit

An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia Cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight

management and overall health. In fact many have found it to increase

fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr. Oz Show has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

Even without exercise and diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet.

The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help

control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Further information and advice is available in store at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy. Phone: 388 5757. Call in and talk to our naturopath and medical herbalist or one of our helpful natural health advisers.

Glucomannan Fibre’s many health benefits

Glucomannan fibre is produced from the root of the Konjac plant. In Japan it is called the “broom of the intestines”. In the stomach, it

absorbs water and expands to form a bulky fibre. Then as it passes through the intestines and bowels, it has a gentle cleansing action helping remove waste material. It also appears to slow the absorption of sugar and cholesterol from the gut. In one four-week study of healthy men, glucomannan decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides as well as systolic blood pressure. Notably, triglycerides (a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease) were reduced by an amazing 23 per cent. Some studies have also shown glucomannan to help control sugar levels in diabetes as well as insulin sensitivity.

Glucomannan has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of constipation and decrease fecal transit time, helping keep the intestines and bowels functioning well. This by itself may considerably improve health and help prevent chronic health problems.

According to Dr Oz, glucomannan is “one of the best ways to control your hunger, the best appetite suppressant” and “nature’s skinny sponge”. If glucomannan is taken around 15 to 30 minutes before mealtimes with a large glass of water, it creates a sense of fullness by expanding to form a bulky fibre in the stomach. You feel full without feeling gassy or bloated. One study of obese individuals who took a total of two to four grams of glucomannan daily resulted in

significant weight loss, an average of 2.5kg over an eight-week period.

When using glucomannan, it is essential to drink sufficient water, at least 250ml per one to two grams of glucomannan as it could possibly gum up your digestive system and cause a blockage in the esophagus or intestine. One of the biggest reasons for constipation is dehydration so drinking more is a good thing. Also it is best to start with a low dose and work up over a week or so to see how your body handles it. As a precaution, do not take straight before going to bed. If used correctly it appears to be an extremely beneficial supplement with numerous health benefits.

Attention to detail throughout the home has ensured the quality of the nish is enviably high. e absolute bonus of this property has to be the large, separate studio with its own bathroom, which gets all the a ernoon sun and has doors directly to the garden.

is is truly a home for all seasons where the northern aspect, combined with double-glazing, insulation, gas res and under oor reticulated hot water heating add up to an energy-e cient house that is superbly warm in the colder months, while the professionally landscaped grounds incorporating two outdoor entertaining areas with Escea gas res and an alfresco dining area are perfect for summer living.

is contemporary home is ideal for the growing family being well-placed for some of the city’s most desirable schooling options, including Fendalton Primary, Cobham Intermediate, CBHS and Burnside High. Likewise the retail and café precincts of Merivale and Fendalton are close to hand, as is a quick drive up Memorial Avenue to the airport.

Our owners are moving on to their next project and serious about seeing a sold sign on the gate. Don’t miss out on securing your family’s future today as this secluded and most appealing property may not last ‘til auction day!

Open Home dates: Sunday, August 31, 1pm to 1.30pm; Saturday, September 6, 1pm to 1.30pm; and Sunday, September 7, 1pm to 1.30pm.

See you at the open homes or before for a private viewing. Contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or 027 555 7079.
