KYLE KNOWLESThe controversial Burwood Re-source Recovery park may not close until 2021, four years later than expected. It has resource consent until 2017.

The BRRP, in the Bottle Lake Forest, was reopened following the February 2011 earthquake as a place to dump or recycle earth-quake rubble and debris.

Since opening, nearby resi-dents have complained about the noise, dust and debris from trucks from the BRRP.

Residents say the news the park could stay open another four years, is “disappointing”.

Projections from the BRRP show with the amount of waste generated from the earthquake rebuild, it needs to stay open until at least September 2021.

The rebuild will leave the city with the equivalent of 40 years rubbish to get rid of – an estimated 8.75 million tonnes of waste.

Waitakiri Residents’ Associa-tion chairman Rod Miller said he would be unhappy if the BRRP stayed open longer.

“Other residents’ associations would be not really happy about that either,” he said.

Environment Canterbury said in its revised Land Use Recovery Plan Review, released last week, that more area is required.

Mr Miller said he wanted to

have a meeting with ECan before any decision was made.

ECan wants to include ‘Site B,’ an area north of the site in the LURP, for landfill as an “addition-al area of permanent disposal.”

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board member Linda Stewart said she did not want to see the BRRP open until 2021.

The board wanted it shut by 2020, she said.

The park will need resource consents to stay open.

The site is owned by the city council, but operated by Waste Management NZ, city and dis-trict councils.

The LURP will need to be changed for this to occur, which ECan has asked for from Earth-quake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee.

Other rebuild waste, including contaminated soils, are taken to Kate Valley Landfill, Hurunui.

A $7m upgrade of the Marshland Rd Bridge, including new traffic signals, could start next year.

The city council has proposed an upgrade on the Marshland Rd Bridge, including traffic signals at the intersections of Marsh-land, Lower Styx and Hawkin Rds.

Work, if approved, is likely to begin next February and will take 18 months.

Residents have welcomed the move, saying they have waited 10 years for the city council to make safer the “dangerous” in-tersection.

Spencerville Residents Asso-ciation president Jenny Knight said the group had started talk-ing to the city council 10 years ago about the safety of the inter-section.

“We have been trying to get it upgraded for a while so it is good that it is going to happen as it is quite a dangerous piece of road,” she said.

But the city council report to a joint community board meeting this week said it was the grow-ing subdivisions in the north of Christchurch that prompted the work.

The community boards ap-proved the plan but it will need

the city council’s approval before the work can start.

Under the plan, vehicles will be able to turn right from Hawkins Rd onto Marshland Rd, or travel straight through from Lower Styx Rd onto Hawkins Rd.

Cycle lanes and footpaths across the bridge are also

planned. In a report to the community

boards, project consultation leader Philippa Upton said it would improve the safety of the intersection and increase capac-ity, allowing for growth in the Prestons and Highfield subdivi-sions.

Councillor wants U-turn on coastal hazard planKYLE KNOWLES

A city councillor wants the controversial coastal hazards chapter taken out of regional plans, after admitting he was wrong to vote for it.

Burwood-Pegasus city coun-cillor Glenn Livingstone said he made a mistake when he, along with 12 of his colleagues, voted to have the coastal hazards chapter in the replacement district plan.

He made a public apology at a meeting of residents last weekend, which was hosted by MP Poto Wil-liams.

Residents in the coastal suburbs have been outraged over the news 18,000 properties have been identified as being susceptible, or potentially susceptible, to coastal

inundation or erosion.Notations of risk appear on

the Land Information Memo-randum.

Cr Livingstone told the Pegasus Post that he made a mistake.

He said the whole process around the coastal hazard issue was not up to scratch and admitted the city council had handled it badly.

“I felt at the time I was mak-ing the right decision, it was

never my intention to be a part of causing anxiety in the com-munity and I apologise,” he said.

He said the community has not had enough time to take in the coastal hazard report and what it means for them.

Fellow Burwood-Pegasus ward city councillor David East was the only city council-lor to vote against the coastal hazards chapter in the district plan.

ALLEGED ASSAULTAn alleged assault in North New Brighton last Sunday morning at 2am left one woman in her 20s with moderate injuries. The alleged assault happened on Marriotts Rd. The alleged victim was taken to the Christchurch Hospital emergency department.

ROAD CLOSUREChadbury St in Parklands, is ex-pected to be closed from today for the road to be repaired. The Stronger Christchurch Infra-structure Rebuild Team will be repairing sections of road, footpath, kerb and channel. The work is expected to take about two weeks.

RESIDENTS STOP ROADWORKSRoadworks in the business area of New Brighton have been delayed after business and property owners were concerned the impacts to the area. City councillors for the Burwood-Pegasus ward, Glenn Livingstone and David East have put in place a process to work collaboratively with the New Brighton community to listen to concerns about the timing and impact of this work on the community and local businesses. Work will not get underway until the city council has a conversation with the community to reach a mutually agreed time frame for this work.

List national MP for Christchurch East, Jo Hayes.

From July 1, all children under-13 can go the doctor for free anytime of the day or night, delivering on our 2014 election promise.

All GPs in Christchurch have signed up to the scheme and 700,000 children across New Zealand are now eligible for free GP visits, which is great for children and their families.

Health received an extra $400 million in the 2015 bud-get taking the overall budget to a record $15.9 billion.

We are making good prog-ress on the Burwood Hospital

rebuild too which will make a real difference to the people of Christchurch.

We are investing $10.8 billion to support education and the funding is helping to lift achievement across our schools.

In Christchurch early child-hood education participation rates are at 98 per cent, includ-ing a two per cent increase in Māori participation in the last year.

More 18-year-olds have NCEA Level 2 or higher with 81.9 per cent of students in Canterbury achieving Level 2 and we are on track to reach the target of 85 per cent in 2017.

Earlier this year the Govern-ment announced QE II Park as the preferred relocation and co-location site of Avonside Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ high schools.

Co-locating the schools at this site will enable both to have access to modern learn-ing environments, which sup-port flexible teaching styles and provide comfortable, adaptable spaces for students to learn in.

Design will begin on the two schools next year and both are expected to be completed in 2018.

Additionally, Aranui Com-munity School, one of four being built under a public private partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Future Schools Partners consortium, will open in Janu-ary 2017.

A reader responds to the pier fishing issue.

Terry Moyse: Regarding the fishing on the pier; what has to be stopped is the commercial fishing. Most of the fishers are not fishing for themselves but for restaurants around the city. Most of the paddle crabs that are caught are too small to collect meat, but are caught for flavouring in meals. This practice has been going on for years, the city council knows about it but are not bothered to do anything about it.

Pegasus Post readers have also commented on Facebook regarding Shirley Primary School tidying the old Shirley Community Centre site.

Linda Harbord: Waiting for the bus by the old Shirley Community Centre, I’ve often thought it would be worth putting a rubbish bin in that area – sometimes it’s pristine, on other occasions a complete mess. Thank you all for making it pristine.

Victoria Crocker: Great work!!! Thank you!!!

Facebook users have also commented on last week’s Our People with Roger Munro.

Sandra Smith: My wonderful board chairman, who is awesome to work with and gives so tire-lessly of his time for our school community.

GOLD FOR MALLThe Palms Shopping Centre has become the first South Island mall to be awarded a gold rating for accessibility. The mall has undergone a Be. Welcome as-sessment which is an accessibil-ity assessment. It was conducted by the social change initiative, Be Accessible. Be. Welcome assesses a business’ accessibil-ity for all people and awards it either a bronze, silver, gold or platinum rating. The Palms Shopping Centre has received a gold rating, meaning that in a close examination of all five access areas – vision, hearing, mobility, learning and parents – the centre achieved an average grade of 80 per cent.

NEW INITIATIVEAn initiative to create a future manufacturing workforce by creating career pathways into the sector for secondary school students, is set to begin in term 1 at Christchurch Polytechnic next year. The Youth Gateway Manufacturing Programme is a collaboration between CPIT, secondary schools, Canterbury Development Corporation, Competenz and the New Zealand Manufacturers and Exporters Association. The course will be followed by a 10 or 20-week work placement. It is open to year 11 to 13 students. For further information contact: [email protected].

KYLE KNOWLES

The old Donaghys factory site in Pages Rd, could become a new indoor sports centre.

Last week the Pegasus Post reported the Celebration Sports Trust had plans to build a facility somewhere near Cuthberts Green, the site for its proposed outdoor sports hub.

Trust special projects manager Corey Watkinson (right) has con-firmed the hub will be on the old Donaghys Factory site, opposite Cuthberts Green.

It is proposed to include indoor courts and a gym.

The trust’s original plans had centred around an outdoor sports hub at Porritt Park but now it wants to create that hub at Cuthberts Green.

Plans at Porritt Park fell through because the decision on what to do with the residential red zone has not been made.

The outdoor hub is slated to include playing fields and an all-weather running track as well as being flood-lit.

Mr Watkinson said talks have taken place with sporting organisations which all expressed strong interest in the development.

“We’re working with some strategic partners and we’ve only just purchased the property so we are working with sport-ing partners to formulate our strategy.”

Mr Watkinson said east Christchurch lacked sports facilities and they would like

to establish one of the largest sporting centres on the east side of the city.

City councillor for the Burwood-Pegasus ward, Glenn Livingstone, said the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board was pretty excited about the plans.

our PEOPLE

Retiring after a lifetime in early

You have had a long time at Avonside?

This is my 24th year. I have been there for a long time. I reduced my hours at the end of last year where I was the senior teacher but I decided to step down from that role too and have been working there part-time since. As the years have gone by I have just felt I was probably ready to retire and do something else. I will miss it, it has been such a big part of my life, and it’s been like a second home.

Are you going to do some-thing else or retire?

I’m retiring from early child-hood education at this stage but I’m not really sure what I’ll do. I look after my baby grand-daughter twice a week so I’ll continue to do that. I’m leaving myself open to opportunities

and I might do a bit of volunteer work but I am just going to relax at the moment. I know I’ll get bored so I’ll have to have my eye open.

You like to be active then?I enjoy gardening but unfor-

tunately I’m just in a little unit with no garden. Another idea in my mind is to move again and get something with more area I can do some gardening in.

You used to live in Avonside too?

I did, then I went into the red zone eventually. I was in the orange zone for ages but finally went into red and had no choice but to move which I found really hard so I came over to Avonhead mainly because my family live over here but I guess at the time I was looking, everybody else was too and had

to take what I could. How long were you there

for?I was in River Rd for about 13

years but prior to that I was in Cowlishaw St. I think all in all I was in the Avonside, Richmond area for 20 years.

You’re a local then?Yeah, the majority of the time,

I grew up in Linwood so it is an area that is familiar to me.

Where did you go to school?I went to Linwood Ave, Lin-

Did you like school?I really enjoyed high school.

Then from high school I left and went to what was then kindergarten college and became a kindy teacher. I did that until I had my first child then I had few years off then went back to early childhood education again.

You have children?

Yes I’ve got four daughters and

13 grandchildren. Over the years they have kept me busy.

Do you have a husband? No, not

anymore (laughs), I gave him up.

What are some of the things that have changed over the years at Avonside?

We have had lots of renovations to the building. When I first started we were only open in the mornings but

waiting lists got very long and opened in the afternoons as well as for lunches. Then we

had the earthquakes which made a big difference.

We lost 50 per cent of families who moved away from Christ-church or the area. At that stage it looked doubtful we would even remain open but the staff all opted to drop hours and one of our staff left, so at that stage we had to work out a way of getting an income so we opened in the holidays. Being a non-profit centre we managed to do that things have changed and the rolls have filled back up.

Have you seen much of a change in children passing through the centre?

I haven’t seen a big change expect with technology. They’re much savvier and better at it than me, children are just used

to that sort of thing now particu-larly with cellphones. If they see an old phone they are fascinated by it. I think children are prob-ably much more aware of their surroundings now than they used to be. I also think children get so much more involved in extra activities like gymnastics and swimming and all sorts; years ago parents didn’t worry about it.

Where were you before Avonside?

Before I went to Avonside I was at a Sydenham crèche and prior to that I brought up my family and a bit of kindy teach-ing before that.

Did you always want to be

an early childhood teacher?Yes, right from school that’s

what I wanted to do. There was a little period where I thought I would do other things but I went back to my first love. While I was at school I thought about going into nursing or become an occupational therapist and thought about primary school teaching too.

Have you done much travelling?

Yeah, lots. England, Spain, Portugal, Bali, China, Hong Kong. This year I went to Cuba and Costa Rica and have been to New York just to name a few. I love travelling and plan to go again.

Where do you want to head to next?

I’d like to go back to England and I would like to probably go back to Europe. I’ve been to Par-is but haven’t been to the south of France. I have been to Italy too but would like to go back and explore more. I’d like to go to the Baltic areas too which would be fascinating.

What else do you do in your spare time?

I spend quite a bit of time with family and like gardening and reading.

WELL TRAVELLED: Ms Averis in Cuba, one of many exotic places she has been to.

NEW BRIGHTON BOWLING CLUB

The club was founded in 1914, making it one of the oldest clubs in Christchurch. Located in the heart of New Brighton, it supports every level of play. The club has 80 bowl-ing members and 120 social members. Its opening day was on September 5 for this summer season. The club has experienced an influx of new members from the South Brigh-ton Bowling Club and the New Brighton RSA which were both closed as a result of earthquake damage. Social memberships are $10 and first-year bowling membership is free. For more information visit www.nbbc.co.nz or its Facebook page: facebook.com/New-Brighton-Bowling-Club.

PARKLANDS CRICKET CLUBParklands Cricket is part of

the Parkland United Sports Club. It organises cricket train-ing and matches for ages five through to senior teams. It’s a club with a family focus, com-

mitted to promoting, encourag-ing and administrating sport within the local community. The club has a strong team of volunteers who organise every-thing from equipment, coach-ing and managing through to prize-giving at the end of the season. They could always use extra help – whether as a coach, organiser or if you’re able to help with tasks such as cutting and painting pitches. Junior cricket is only two hours on a Saturday morning, and the club aims for all players to finish with a smile on their face at the end of the day.

Registrations are now open for the new season starting next month and expect a lot of interest after the World Cup held earlier this year. The club is based at Parklands Reserve with new cricket nets, training facili-ties and clubrooms.

Aranui High School stu-dent Bethany Walters won first prize in this year’s Lois Middlemiss Memorial Award.

The award is an annual com-petition for poetry.

Bethany’s poem was called I Would Never Do This To You and is a thought-pro-voking critique of the current po-litical scene from her perspective.

Award con-vener, Judith Sutherland, of the Christ-church Branch of the National Council of Women, says the aim of the award is to encourage secondary school girls to gain a better understanding of women’s issues.

“We want young women to take a topic and explore it from a personal perspective,” she says.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School’s Amy Huang finished second.

Ms Sutherland says the qual-ity of entries was very high and encourages girls to start looking ahead to next year.

“Perhaps with pay parity so prevalent in the news at the moment and the midwives pay

parity case due to be heard in the High Court early next year, that may be an inspira-tion for some,” she says.

“But of course anything that inspires our young women is welcome and encouraged.”

With Bethany and Amy, around 20 people including Mayor Lianne Dalziel and city councillors Ali Jones and Pauline Cotter, gathered yesterday morning at the Kate Sheppard Memorial on

Oxford Tce, to acknowledge the 122nd anniversary of New Zealand women gaining the vote. It is known as Women’s Suffrage Day.

Preschool programme inspires children to learn

Parents looking for quality preschool education for their children will be pleased to know that Fundamentals Preschool currently has vacancies for children of all age groups. Fundamentals has two centres – one in Innes Road the other in Marshland Road – where the teachers take pride in offering high-quality preschool care and education for children from ages 0-6.The supervising manager, Kylie Granger explains: “At Fundamentals we believe in providing the building blocks for success in learning. This comes through creating habits of the children’s minds, which inspire them to want and need to learn all the time. These foundations are established in the formative years (0-6 years of age). “The way to achieve a successful framework is to provide, right from the start, a stimulating, challenging, exciting, and fun environment that will assist the children to develop their natural abilities, through individual and collective learning opportunities.”Fundamentals have one teacher to every four children in the nursery, and one teacher to every eight children in the preschool. The teachers participate in ongoing professional development, and at preschool focus on listening to the children, their families and one another.“We emphasise that learning should be based on love, security and fun,” Kylie points out.A unique feature of the Fundamentals’ approach to learning is the use of a purpose-built gym, to assist children’s perceptual and sensory motor skill

development. They offer a daily programme, which is balanced between structured activities such as gym in the onsite gym room, and group times, numeracy and literacy, music and extension group. These gym/numeracy and literacy/extension group programmes provide an active, specialised learning environment with emphasis on balancing the body and the brain.Kinesthetics is vital, particularly to preschoolers, for their developmental learning processes, says Kylie. “The physical balances with the intellectual.”The free play times gives the children the opportunity to choose activities from the range of core curriculum areas such as art and dressing up, and many outdoor activities. “We love to use imaginative play. We offer sand, woodwork, water play, art, drama and teacher-guided activities based on science, maths and literacy. The numeracy and literacy programme for two to five-year-olds includes phonological-based reading extension and games. “We incorporate a range of activities from puzzles, shape exploration, and small manipulative tasks like threading, to gym room activities, stories, creative art and music.”The programme in Christchurch allows teachers to extend their expectations of the preschoolers’ ability to understand and learn, she says. “It is a high-expectations programme providing fulfilment as children learn how to learn.”

Our project

Pupils in Waitakiri School’s learning studio eight have been doing a project this year focus-ing on turangawaewae or the place where I stand.

In term 1 the pupils learnt the surrounding areas were used by Ngai Tahu for mahinga kai, or food gathering.

In term 2 the pupils began to explore why the early settlers chose to live in the area.

They learnt that the settlers drained the land and found the soil was very fertile and suitable for growing vegetables and fruit.

Now in term 3, the pupils have been learning about the area as it stands today.

Local market gardener, Phil Kiesanowski from Veges Direct, talked to the pupils about his job and what vegetables he grows.

He gave them some bean seeds

and some lettuce and cabbage plants.

They have now been mak-ing planter boxes and planting vegetables around the school.

Each child has a plant to nurture, so when the time is ready they can harvest it and take it home to eat and sell the produce to purchase more seeds for next year’s pupils.

Creating gardens for food gathering

GOOD WORK: Blake Newman, David Viliamu-Tuiloma and Quinn Nicoll in a planter box they built.

SET TO GROW: Cassie-Jane Fagan, Charls Kamiliano, Andre Kerdemedlis and Josh Maddock next to one of tyres they have planted vegetables in.

DRESSED UP: Marty Corry, Denzel Siaki and AJ Ioane in costume ready for the production.

COLOURFUL: Pupils from Room 7 during one of the scenes.

Linwood North School’s production was one of its biggest yet, every pupil at the school was involved. This year’s production was a portayal of The Faraway Tree. The school did not have a hall to practise in but the pupils were still able to rehearse their parts for the big night which was held at St Chad’s Church. They raised $220 from the gold coin entry which will be put towards the purchase of new music and drama resources.

Chisnallwood Intermediate School’s Cosmic Latte has finished third in the national Bandquest competition.

The band members are Nic Ryan, Max Aldridge, Keira Jonkers, Ryan Bell, Kayne Child and Josh McCaffery.

You’re in Trouble of Clayton Park Primary School, Auckland, won the competition and Wai Stylez of Waikowhai Intermediate School also of Auckland finished second.

More than 170 young school bands lined up for this year’s

Bandquest, the nationwide mu-sic contest for intermediate and primary students.

Bandquest is in its fifth year as the younger sibling of Smokefreerockquest.

Founder and director Glenn Common says Rockshop Band-quest is a vehicle to spotlight this talent, there were 12 events this year across the country before the national final which was held last week.

“Rockshop Bandquest gives young bands a chance to

shine in a stage setting with professional sound mix and lighting – for most it will be their first time with this kind of set up,” Mr Commons said.

“More importantly we are giving the kids an experience that extends them and puts them under the pressure that comes with playing live. They get a taste of what musical performance is all about, and we hope that encourages them to stick with it and to gain all the benefits music brings to education.”

GREAT WORK: Cosmic Latte in action during the Canterbury Bandquest. They finished third in the national competition.

Increasingly the health benefits of active commuting and using public transport are being recognised and are well researched. This is a way to

combat poor health and prevent a polluted environment. For every 1200 steps or 12 minutes walking (about 1 kilometre) you burn calories, improve your health and happiness, and reduce your disease risk;1300 steps save 72 cents on car costs, and avoid 0.2kgs of carbon emission.

People who commute by bus or train and ferry, get on average over three times the exercise of those in a car. And bus and trains are the safest way to get around.

The question is if it’s so great why aren’t more people walking and using public transport? Living Streets president, Andy Smith says “Walking is part of every trip but we want people to walk more. We do see more people walk and use public transport in some places but our cities have been developed for the car. This makes it difficult to get the exercise we need every day – recommended 30 minutes activity most days for adults, and more for children and teenagers. We think it should be easy to walk or use public transport to where you want to go every day – save the car for out of the ordinary trips.

Summer’s on the way, Get WalkingWith the warmer temperatures and the general improvement in the weather, now is a great time to dust off those walking shoes.

“We use only fresh fish sourced from reputable suppliers, and we only use quality flour and oil in our cooking, which gives our products an authentic flavour.”

Peter and Helen’s three sons have all been part of the team as well. One of them came up with two products that have proven to be very popular – crispy chicken souvlaki and crispy chicken fillet burger.

“We are also well-known for our crispy, crunchy batter, which our customers often say is simply the best,” says Peter.

Both the quality of the products and the attractive presentation of the shop have won Gourmet Seafoods several awards over the years; it has also been nominated several times for Top Shop.

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, and to thank customers for their support, Gourmet Seafoods is offering specials from now until the end of October. One of them is the Seafood Basket comprising a variety of seafood items, chips and sauce for $12 – a saving of $6.70. Another one is the Gourmet Birthday Pack, which includes a selection of burgers and fish and chip items. This is at the special price of $20 – a saving of $6.20. There are more specials in store.

“We have always enjoyed serving our customers, whether they are locals or from outside the area, and we look forward to them coming in to help us celebrate our 20th birthday.”

Gourmet Seafoods is at 6/251 Travis Road, phone 388 2531. Opening hours are Monday and Wednesday 11.30am to 8.30pm; Tuesday 4.30pm to 8.30pm; Thursday to Saturday 11.30am to 9pm; Sunday 12nn to 8.30pm. Closed daily from 3.15pm to 4.30pm.

This month marks 20 years in business for owners Peter and Helen Joe. During that time they have continued to provide both

Chisnallwood Intermediate’s sports teams won six gold medals at the recently held Koru Games.

Chisnallwood entered six events at the Koru Games hosted in Selwyn and won all six.

The winning teams were girl’s basketball, boy’s and girl’s swimming, boy’s touch, boy’s football and the bowls team.

Meanwhile, 54 students also travelled to Tauranga recently to take part in the AIMS Games.

It is a national competition for intermediate schools which involves more than 8000 students.

The best placed team was the aerobics team which finished just out of the medals in fourth in a field of 12 schools.

The boy’s rugby 7s side finished 17th out of 64 teams and were the only South Island team at the competi-tion.

The girl’s football side and boy’s basketball team fin-ished middle of the pack and the bowls team made it through the first round in both the pairs and indi-vidual competitions. Chisnallwood’s sole golfer, Lina Park finished in the middle of the field.

Chisnallwood PE teacher Dan Vann said it was an outstanding week.

“Although we got no medals our teams were out-standing winning more games than we lost and the experience the students get is tremendous.”

The movies are, October 5, Holiday with Cary Grant 1958, 12, Carry on Re-gardless with Sid James 1961, 19 Cyrana De Bergerac with Jose Ferrer 1950 and 26, Lucky Me Doris Day 1950.

We should be very grateful with to-day’s medical services. To be ill in past days could not have been fun.

In the very early years of the 20th century Nurse Maude established a “poor man’s sanatorium” to deal with cases of TB.

This comprised of seven or eight tents sited among the broom near the New

Brighton beach. This was for the use of those who were

unable to afford more expensive treat-ment.

Nurse Maude reported “The ground is dry, sheltered from the wind and sunny, and the patients there have already made excellent progress”

Soon afterwards a public campaign prompted the Hospital Board to take action and in 1908 a TB hospital was established in the Port Hills.

The museum is open from 10am – noon Mondays, and every other day 1-3pm We take bookings for school groups and other community func-tions.

FLAME FILES

MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Last Sunday morning it rained. It was cold. Most of us kept ourselves inside in the warm. But one poor member of the city rescue tender crew had an eye-widening wade into the Heathcote River to check that a car found in the water didn’t have any occupants. He checked. It didn’t. He then went back to station to thaw out. Well done!

Later on the same day, Addington’s crew were called to an address in Spreydon where a three-year-old and an 18-month-old were locked inside a car.

Normally in this situation mum is fran-

tic and her upset is picked up by the chil-dren who become equally distressed. In this case reportedly the kids were fine and watched the fire crew’s actions with interest. I can only presume that mum stayed calm, which kept the children un-fazed. Either that or these are really laid-back kids. Or maybe both! The door was quickly opened and everyone was reunit-ed without tears.

The digger driver that opened up the gas main in Oxford Tce on Wednesday after-noon probably wished he hadn’t come to work that day. It took two rather nervous hours for the temporary repair during which firefighters kept up water sprays to disperse the flammable gas.

Keeping calm helps

SCIRT TRAFFIC NEWS

Young minds big on SCIRT

Children will be out and about enjoying Spring activities over these next two weeks of the school holidays. And they won’t be as easy to spot as these children from Waitakiri School on New Brighton Rd who had a great time learning about safety and trying on mini-versions of SCIRT’s high-vis safety gear. This was part of a visit from Ros Service (right) from the SCIRT Downer team to talk about the nearby wastewater repairs and how to be safe around any SCIRT work sites.

Beach Road: plan your route around the closure

Major repairs on the earthquake damaged wastewater pipe main start from Monday 28 September.

• Beach Road: closed between Frosts Road and Donnington Street for about 3 weeks.

• The closure will then progress east towards Bower Avenue.

SCIRT’s Fletcher team will complete this work over about 9 months. Please be on the lookout for traffic changes and detours.

Aranui / Wainoni: good progress = roads reopening - thanks everyone

This continues to be SCIRT’s busiest area with all the work to install a stronger wastewater system for 2,600 households and businesses. SCIRT’s Fletcher and City Care teams thank everyone for their ongoing patience and support. The crews are working hard to reopen roads:

• Breezes Road: will be back to two-way

between Wainoni and Pages Roads soon.

• Pages Road: the two-way will be extended up to Shortland Street soon.

New Brighton Road: two-way but expect delays

SCIRT’s Downer team is repairing the damaged wastewater on New Brighton Road near Lake Terrace Road. This is part of the Burwood wastewater repair work which is now more than 70% complete:

• New Brighton Road: reduced lanes.Temporary traffic lights are maintaining two-way traffic.

• Lake Terrace Road: closed at the New Brighton Road intersection.

School’s out – watch for childrenDrivers should take extra care when driving past schools and be on the lookout for children around all areas of the city during the school holidays.
