Water contamination at Kerrs Reach is back in the spotlight after a recently released report has shown it has unacceptably high levels of E. coli and campylobacter from dog and canada geese faeces.

Samples were taken from nine locations in the city, including Kerrs Reach and South New Brighton Park, between April and September last year, at normal flowing level and after rainfall.

The report, by Environmental

Science and Research, investi-gated what faecal sources were at the locations. They included dog, wildfowl, sheep, cow and human faeces.

At Kerrs Reach (right) the most dominant sources were human faeces and wildfowl – canada geese – in normal flow. After rainfall, dog faeces were added to the mix.

At normal flow E.coli regis-tered at a normal level. After rainfall it registered at over four times the recreational water qual-ity guidelines said the report.

“In terms of exceeding recre-ational bathing guidelines, the levels from wildfowl and under rainfall events dog sources result

in exceeding levels,” he said.Kerrs Reach is a popular row-

ing spot, and in January Pegasus Post reported it was one the worst locations in the city for water pollution.

South New Brighton Park’s results showed E. coli levels to be low in all six samples, and campylobacter was only found in one sample. The dominant source of faeces in normal flow and after rainfall was wildfowl.

suggested a potential solution to the problem of bird fouling could be to “create an alternate bird life habitat”, helping to keep them out of the city’s waterways.

Opawaho Heathcote River Network chairwoman Helene Mautner said that like the Heathcote River, Kerrs Reach has had “continuous problems” with sewerage and faeces.

New Brighton residents want to see a $25,000 transitional grant spent on public barbecues, art and shade.

The city council granted the money to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board, which in turn asked residents what they wanted to see in New Brighton.

Nearly 1000 votes were recorded over the two voting sessions, which saw public barbecues, public art and shade sails, and an outdoor cinema or stage come out as favourites.

The city council will now investigate the feasibility of five of the top 10 ideas. They are: Painted benches, planter boxes, sun loungers, beach volleyball and picnic tables.

One of more popular ideas of shade sails will not be pursued by the city council due to limit-ed funding, maintenance issues, and “potential of restricting key views”, said a city council spokeswoman.

lic barbecues – was put forward by the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force, and is now being worked on jointly by the group and the city council.

“It will be a much better proj-ect than we could have deliv-ered by ourselves. We’ve been

working on things like loca-tions, designs and things like that,” she said.

An outdoor cinema will be looked at further by the city council by talking to community groups.

During the Ray White New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing an outdoor movie was shown in the amphitheater by the beach, with great feedback.

NEW HOUSING UNITS New housing units in Aranui will be officially opened on Friday. The 20 new units will be on Aldershot St in Aranui, and will be opened by Housing New Zealand. These units are the first of a larger citywide development, which is expected to see 700 new houses built. In December, the units while being built, were deliberately set alight.

CAR HITS CHILD A child was taken to Christchurch Hospital last week after he was hit by a car in Parklands. St John sent an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the incident which happened on Rothesay Rd, at about 8.45am on Wednesday. The 10-year-old boy was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

ARANUI WASTEWATER About 170 houses in Aranui have been connected to the suburb’s new vacuum wastewater system. The new system uses vacuum suction instead of gravity to move sewage and wastewater from homes to the Bromley treatment station. The first streets to be connected were Marlow Rd, Doreen St, Merrington St, Rowan Ave, Esk Place, Leonie Place, parts of Pages Rd and Rowses Rd.

Smoke alarms should be like car seat belts.

Nobody thinks twice about clicking tight every time they get into a car. Likewise working smoke alarms should be an abso-lute expectation in every home.

Which made this weekend an important one because daylight saving ended with clocks being hauled back an hour. You might have seen the latest advertise-ments from the Fire Service, as always encouraging people to use the day as a trigger to hav-ing the batteries in your smoke alarms changed.

Too many of us use the warn-ing cheep of the alarm to tell us it’s time to change batteries. There are good reasons not to do this. If it happens while you’re away it’s possible the battery will be completely dead by the time you return. You’ll be living with the mistaken belief that the alarm will warn you of fire.

If you’re home when it hap-pens I can almost guarantee it

will occur at about 3am. Which means the only way you’ll get back to sleep will be to pull the alarm down and remove the bat-tery. You’re now unprotected. And will remain so for as long as it takes you to buy a new battery and reinstate the alarm.

Using this weekend every year to ensure your smoke alarm bat-teries are changed, or if you have alarms with 10-year batteries, that they are cleaned with the brush accessory on your vacuum cleaner, creates a habit of a life-time. More likely a longer life-time too.

polytechnics now has a name, the Ara Institute of Canterbury.

The new name was announced last week after it was decided in November last year that Aoraki Polytechnic and the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology would merge.

Ara, meaning arise or path-way in Maori, is the next stage in the over 200 year combined history of CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic.

Underneath the new institute’s name is the Maori phrase ‘ara rau, taumata rau’, which means ‘many pathways, many opportuni-ties’.

The Ara logo represents an upward journey of learning, while also show-ing Maori tukutuku panelling, which was traditionally used to decorate meeting houses.

A plan has been put in place to extend the range of programmes and services and become a destination for national and international students.

Both institutes have been in the Canterbury and Waitaki region for more than 100 years each.

Ara Institute of Canterbury chairwoman Jenn Bestwick (left) said the intention of the new facility is to continue working with industry partners and our communities to adapt to the needs of the region and of modern learners.

“Our new name signals we have stepped into an exciting new future together.”

More than 170 people have supported the city council’s move to allow dogs into the New Brighton Pedestrian Mall.

Dogs are currently prohib-ited in the mall, but the results of a public consultation on the proposed dog control bylaw has shown 72 per cent of respon-dents were happy to see dogs in the mall.

Other changes to the current policy include dog owners being required to carry plastic bags with them, having them under effective control, as well as hav-ing to keep their dog near and in sight when off the lead.

The city council received 235 responses, including submissions from the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board, the Southshore Residents’ Association, and the New Brighton Guardians.

The residents’ association wanted to see more dog owners show control of their pet when it is in The Spit Reserve. They agreed with the new definition of under effective control, and also wanted to see more owners clean up after their dog.

The community board said it wanted to see training and agil-

ity courses at each of the three dog parks in the ward, those being Horseshoe Lake, Rawhiti Domain and Bexley Reserve.

The community board agreed that dogs should be allowed in the pedestrian mall.

The New Brighton Guardians said it had witnessed multiple dog attacks in the past and wanted to understand how the city council would enforce the rule of under effective control. It suggested spot fines for anyone who didn’t display control of their dog.

Public consultation on the bylaw was opened to the public on February 1, closed on March 14, and hearings are now expected to be heard in early April.

The clocks were wound back an hour at 3am on Sunday, a timely reminder the Fire Service said to install and check smoke alarms.

On Thursday, Wainoni fire-fighters were in the supermar-ket’s car park, along with senior fire risk management personnel, to remind the public to install and check smoke alarms.

“There were lots of pupils from Parkview Primary School

that came to join in, which was great. And a lot of people walked away with a timely reminder,” Mr Brown said.

During a house fire, toxic smoke will build up and rise towards the ceiling. Mr Johnson said it is vital to get down low in that situation.

“It’s vital to have an escape plan for your house . . . and also think about alternative exits as well,” he said.

There was an evacuation challenge for Parkview pupils to take part in. It involved a darkened maze in which they could practice their very own ‘get down, get low and get out’ technique.

Two Aranui High School stu-dents took part in the in the Coast to Coast adventure chal-lenge race in early February. The 243km long race starts at Kumara on the West Coast and finishes at New Brighton, with cycle, run and kayak stages taking place over two days. Steve Gurney, nine time winner of the event, encouraged stu-dents chosen from the Services Academy to participate in the race. Training started last August with a lot of help from specialist volunteers who helped with running, cycling, endurance, and kayaking as well as nutrition.The team worked hard, even training during the weekends and Christmas. Two of the team were selected to do the race with other members as support. The school Kapahaka team welcomed our boys at the finish line. In a fantastic effort the boys came second in the tandem category out of about 780 participants. Bryce Adamson and Taitama Tukaki did extremely well as the youngest competitors of the Coast to Coast.

Aranui High School’s Samoan group lit up the stage at Polyfest 2016 with their “swan song” performance on Saturday March 19, marking the end of an era due to the amalgation of several schools on the east side of Christchurch as a result of the earthquakes.2016 presented new initiatives with the Pasifika group coordinator role being handed to Rose Telea to get it back up and running. Shane Asi (past student and Pasifika group tutor) took it upon himself to restore the Aranui High polyfest group to its former glory. Reviving old songs from the school’s repertoire gave vibrancy

and brought a sense of legacy and fulfilment for the current students. After hearing the stories of who had come before them, the current students took up the challenge of taking Aranui High to new heights of performance glory, the last one ever as Aranui High

Pair race to finishThe Girls’ Senior Volleyball Team have secured a place in the national contest in hard-fought competition at the Canterbury senior champs held at Pioneer Stadium on March 18–20.Our Year 9 Girls’ team played some exceptional volleyball with wins over St Margaret’s College, Middleton Grange, Rangiora High and a

very special 3 sets to 0 win over Riccarton. The semi final against CGHS was a great performance with all girls playing well to achieve another 3-0 result. The final was a tough match against 2015 national champs Burnside, and the girls lost 3 sets to 1. The team will represent Aranui and Canterbury as the second seed for the region at the Nationals and will contest the

top division. Celise Avia, and captain Brianne Petersen were selected for the Canterbury Tournament Team.The Boy’s Team struggled to find their best form and were placed sixth in Divison 1 and will travel to Palmerston North for the National Tournament as the fifth seed for the region.

The Services Academy has had some changes with behaviours and numbers. It has worked very hard on personal fitness, drill and discipline, which was evident at the recent NZDF Induction Camp at Burnham. The Academy performed well and won the Drill Trophy and the Longest Day Trophy, secur-ing two of the three trophies presented – well done team.

Helping others fight quake battles

Hi Mike, tell me a little bit about yourself and your family.

Well I’m 53-years-old. I’m married to Robyn, we’re about to have our 29th anniversary, she’s a medical scientist. I always say she’s the bright one. I have a Bachelor of Commerce and Accounting.

I graduated from Canterbury University and the Christchurch Teachers College. I went on to teach at Waimea College, as well as St Bede’s College and Linwood High which is now Linwood College.

I travelled overseas and backpacked around the Americas with my wife, then got a Bachelor of Theology in Auckland, and that was my training to become a minister. I actually grew up as a Roman Catholic and went to Xavier College, but later on became a Baptist before becoming Anglican.

Wow that’s quite a background. And do you have any children?

Yes, we have three kids, Matthew our eldest is 25, Simon is 19, and Emily is 11. Matthew is a product manager at an electronics firm, Simon is doing his second year studying chemistry at Canterbury University, and Emily is at Banks Avenue School. I also love cycling, going to the gym and having fun with the family.

We also have one grandchild, Matthew and his partner Paris have a boy called Jack, who is three and he is just beautiful. He loves going to pre-school and kindy, loves all the boys stuff, all the trucks and trees, he’s just got heaps of energy.

Tell me about the Wider Earthquake Communities Action Network, how did it come about?

It was started by three people in the community, myself as one of lead facilitators. Basically we were there to speak on behalf of people struggling with their house being in the red zone, or other land issues including settlements with insurers. It actually ended up becoming a quite strong activist group, and any negotiations we tried to have were basically shut down. So in the end they forced the group to protest more to get people’s issues heard.

How successful were those protests?

We had varying success, in the early days we showed some insurance companies up for what they were doing and what they really were. Some of the things they were offering was just wrong. The Government seemed to be happy to sit back and Canterbury be devastated. That really concerned many of us who were looking to help those in the communities.

So do you think it’s a lot better today?

No. Even as we look around today. (Earthquake Minister) Gerry Brownlee talks about the Margaret Mahy Family Playground more than anything else when he is talking about Christchurch’s success. It’s his No 1 defence for questions on the recovery. When you talk to homeowners you realise there are still thousands and thousands who are still locked in insurance battles and fighting for a fair deal. It was the reason WeCan was formed, to give a voice to

those who couldn’t.And what was your

particular role in the whole setup?

I was the media spokesman throughout that time, through two and a half years. During that time I was working full time as a counsellor and a reverend as well. So at the start of 2014 I kind of realised it was time to leave WeCan. From there I decided to focus more on the insurance companies and helping others get through their battles, and only wanted fairness for both sides. I never fought for more than a policy would honour, only what a policy of-fered. We just looked for a fair honouring. We weren’t trying to get people rich when they were only entitled to so much, and we’ve found that the insurance companies have respected that. There are no guiding rules to en-sure insurance companies treat people fairly, which is ridiculous to be honest.

Hasn’t the recovery gone on long enough already?

Absolutely it has. The nature of this recovery for insurance companies is about spinning a line to get through the year, spreading the recovery over 20 years. To have private homeowners waiting for that long is plain disgraceful, it’s not about people it’s about ensuring the Government’s books are kept healthy. I just find it really interesting that we can paint all kinds of artwork throughout the city but can’t have all of our

people in houses.Do you have any spare time

at all?Yes of course! I’m a school

counsellor at Middleton Grange School. I really enjoy working one-on-one with adolescents and seeing them grow. Get-ting an understanding of what they’re going through is really important. I think I have the skills to help them, and I really enjoy seeing them feel empow-ered. I mean a lot of them are still finding themselves in life and gaining an awareness about the world around them, so find-ing their way in life can be quite difficult. I’ve been through a lot in my own life so I can kind of pass that wisdom on in a way.

I can imagine in a job like that, you’d meet a lot of interesting people, anyone stand out in particular?

There are a few that kind

of

stand out. I remember I was helping some boys, one I seem to remember was at the age of nine, and he was caught up in his parents’ divorce. He was really quite an angry young man, and was really struggling with life in general, with his behaviour spinning out of control. In one session I asked him to paint a picture, and he painted what he said he always wanted to have, which was a Holden car and a girlfriend on his arm.

That’s very cute.Yes, it was. After he left

school he sent me a picture on Facebook of him and his girlfriend and his Ford car which he had saved up to get, and he said he was going to get a Holden. I thought that was amazing. I’ve been involved with counselling since 1995, when I helped start up the Delta Community Support Trust.

I’m sure on the other side of that spectrum though, there would be times where someone is asking for help and you wouldn’t know how to help them?

It can be quite disheartening if you find a student that you can’t work out the thing that they are telling you is wrong. And that can stem from a whole number of things. It’s very hard even for a youth mental health worker, because they can also really struggle to help someone like that. It can be very sad to see teens on medication for mental illnesses as well. The stress of the quakes has been immense for some kids. Especially those who are coming from homes that are still unsettled. We’ll see

that for many years to come I think.

We are once again very pleased with our students’ NCEA results and congratulate all the parents and teachers who worked with our great students to enable them to obtain these results. The pass rates amongst our students who took a full NCEA course in 2015 exceeds the national data averages for all schools across the country. We also had a very pleasing number of students obtain merit and excellence endorsements in 2015. To attain a course endorsement, students must earn at least 50 credits at Merit or Excellence level in one year.

Karina McGillivray-Seaton was one of our highest achievers in Year 13, 2015.

Last year she studied at the University of Canterbury on a school funded STAR course while also studying a full time Year 13 course at school. At UC, she studied Politics and Justice Ethics and Political and Social Philosophy and gained exceptional results – achieving A+ in both courses.

She also gained a scholarship in English in her final year at Mairehau High School, which is yet another fantastic achievement.

Only 3% of students in New Zealand are recognised and awarded this monetary scholarship. Students must demonstrate their ability to think critically and integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations.

The staff at Mairehau High School are pleased to provide able students with the opportunity to extend and challenge themselves through NCEA scholarships in most subject areas, with this work taking place out of normal class time.

The Ncea level 2 Physical education class embarked on their annual adventure called ‘Mairehau vs Wild’ from 16th-18th March.

Thank goodness the purpose of this trip was to implement the risk management strategies that the students had predetermined, as this ensured we overcame some epic challenges including torrential rain and bumble bees!! We had a fantastic time at Mt oxford, hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and horse riding, and we look forward to 2017!

The end of last year saw the inauguration of the annual Student executive team and the newly formed Waka leaders team. We were fortunate enough to gain funding via red cross to include Waka ama as part of the student leadership development programme run by our Year 13 Dean, Mrs Mackenzie.

Throughout last term, all eleven students met at 7am on Wednesday mornings to journey together in self and mutual discovery of our natural surroundings and the tikanga and our communities’ traditions relating to the waka.

it was a first time for many in a vessel on the river and at sea. They faced their fears and showed true courage and commitment. haimona and Mr russell (lTl Phys ed) were their guides and taught them many life and leadership lessons to support them in their roles as school leaders for 2016.

our Year 11 Physical education students were offered a series of eoTc opportunities at the very start of the term as a part of their first assessment for Ncea. Students attended aquatics sessions at graham condon Sport and recreation centre, followed by a climbing excursion at clip and climb in combination with a number of other movement activities on school grounds to identify factors that influenced

their participation in different activities.

it would be fair to say that the excursion at clip and climb was the biggest hit, with students fighting to complete as many challenges on the walls as they could, in the hope of gaining the most points for a free trip on the ‘giant drop’ challenge at the end.

Four gymnasts are to compete in the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships next weekend.

The Christchurch School of Gymnastics team will be head-ing to Everett in Washington, to compete against gymnasts from around the world.

This event serves as a warm-up meet for the Rio Olympic test event which follows on April 16-19 in Brazil.

Courtney McGregor, of Hals-well, will use this opportunity as

her final hit-out before she trav-els to Rio to try and get a plac-ing for women’s gymnastics.

Courtney is looking forward to competing since she has learnt more difficult vault routines.

“I am looking forward to competing my new second vault – I added 0.30 difficulty so now I will be more competitive,” she said.

This is the first time Stella Ashcroft, 13, of Hoon Hay, will be joining the New Zealand

team at the competition.Stella earned her place by

being the top-ranked junior international in the country.

“I’m pretty nervous because it’s such a big event, I’ve been training for roughly 26-30 hours a week, but I’m excited to go with the other girls, they’re my close friends.”

Mackenzie Slee and Charlotte Sullivan will also be competing and have spent all summer training for the championships.

RUNNING HARD: New Brighton’s Georgia Lewis takes the ball upfield for the Kingfishers under 6 team on Saturday, during their grading matches. All 17 junior New Brighton rugby teams had their first hit-out of the new season on the weekend. The teams played shortened games to find out which grade they would best suit, which came with mixed results. The under 7s teams played grading games in a carnival style – three half games against different opponents. Most of these games finished in draws. Chisnallwood Intermediate had a very special visit from a travelling group of ukulele playing students last week.

New Zealand Ukulele Trust’s develop-ment squad travelled from Auckland to visit the school on Thursday.

Head of music Judith Bell said the school was thrilled to have the team, which stayed with Chisnallwood, to help reduce costs while they performed around the city.

She said it was a huge effort logisti-cally to get the team down, as they are from all parts of the country, but seeing them taking workshops and performing to the school was worth it.

“Seeing them perform at places like the Cathedral and Orange Studios was great. A lot of their work is on YouTube, so they’re a big deal,” she said.

Director of development squad Philip Griffin also travelled down with the team.

Mrs Bell said the group held a work-shop at the school on Thursday night, before playing at the school assembly on Friday morning, the Margaret Mahy Family Playground in the afternoon, and a live performance at Orange Studios at 7pm.

On Saturday morning, the group performed and busked at the Cardboard Cathedral, before heading back to Auck-land.

Complementary medicine is becoming increasingly sought after in New Zealand as people become aware of the many

different methods of treating pain and ill health that are available here.

Christchurch-based Chinese health practitioner Lan Xiao has developed a method of treatment, which she says has as an immediate affect on a wide variety of pains and health conditions. It is known as ‘acupuncture without needles’.

Lan describes it as being similar to reflexology in that the problem area on the body is determined through pressure, but is much more accurate.

Trained as a medical practitioner in China, Lan came to New Zealand in 1992 and began practising acupuncture in 1995. From that discipline she created her acupuncture without needles, and uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body. This can include arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury.

“For example, the treatment has been very successful for people who have painful joints caused by arthritis,” Lan says.

Acupuncture without needles is also effective in restoring energy levels,

she says.“As people age their energy is reduced,

and this can lead to other health problems. The acupuncture without needles treatment is like the body’s battery being charged up again, so their energy levels are restored, which in turn helps overcome their health problems.”

Lan also uses it to treat depression and anxiety, and says it can help with addiction problems as well.

“After the treatment the person has no cravings – because it treats the cause of the addiction.”

She says the results are immediate, though people may need several treatments, depending on the extent of their health problem, and while it is slightly painful for few moments, everyone can tolerate it.
