AN employee at a local radio station has beendismissed and allegations of fraud to the tune ofnearly R1 million are being investigated againstthe former staff member.

Kingfisher FM have confirmed that the wom-an, who was an administrative clerk, pleadedguilty inadisciplinaryhearingtomisusingcom-pany funds which led to her dismissal. Since theformerstaffmemberhasnotbeenchargedbythePolice yet, she cannot be named.

This comes amidst rumours of staff being de-motivated due to not receiving their salaries ontime and concerns over the financial state of thestation.

Kingfisher FM General Manager, Alan Ahl-feldt, said, “With the first irrefutable evidence ofmisconduct,allegationswerepresentedtothein-dividual and she was suspended on full pay. Atthe disciplinary hearing, the individual ac-knowledgedguilt.Shewassummarilydismissedin accordance with labour legislation. As a re-sult of the evidence, a charge was laid againstthe individual with the SAP,” said Ahlfeldt

According to a reliable source who wished toremain anonymous, the accused was solely incharge of the company’s business accounts.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Jansevan Rensburg, said they could confirm that acharge of fraud had been laid by Kingfisher FMagainst one of their employees.

“The case is currently being investigated byour Fraud and Financial Crimes Unit. So farthere have not been any arrests,” said Janse vanRensburg.

According to the source, the suspect is a well-known representative of the Kingfisher FMbrand and allegedly misappropriated almostR1 million from the station.

Ahlfeldt said they were currently in the proc-ess of appointing a national auditing firm to con-duct a thorough forensic audit in order to ascer-tain the extent of their financial situation.

Accordingtothesource,asaresultof thefraudthere have been management and financial

problems with employees’ salaries not alwaysbeing paid on time.

“There was a managerial change a year agoandworkerswerehopingthatthiswouldchangethe financial situation but operations are stillnot100%andpeoplestillreceivetheirremunera-

tion at times very late. The morale of employeesis lowandpeoplewillnaturallybedemotivated,”said the source.

Ahlfeldt, however, said the situation had noeffect on programming or operations of King-fisher FM other than an additional adminis-

trative burden. “We are all naturally sad-dened by the situation. Kingfisher FM has ex-perienced real growth over the last twelvemonths and the situation, although regretta-ble is not debilitating to the continued impe-tus of the growth,” said Ahlfeldt.

POLICE have started handing out pam-phlets to motorists warning them aboutan increase in car vandalism at the cor-ner of Kempston and Harrower Roadsnear the LifeMercantileHospital, whichare well known crime hotspots.

Police Spokesperson, Captain SandraJanse van Rensburg, said criminals intheareaarenowtargetingfemaledriversand stealing their jewellery, handbagsand cellphoneswhilewaiting at the busyintersection.“Wehavebeen inundatedwith reports

by female drivers whose belongings hadbeen stolen in the area. We urge motor-ists to be careful while waiting at the in-tersection and keep vigilant of anyonesuspicious approaching your car.”Janse van Rensburg said while they

ANOTHER person has come forward claiming thatshe is a victim of card fraud after a report by the PEExpress last week over the ongoing problem of bankand credit card fraud in the Metro.

LindelwaEugenia Dinga, who bankswithAfricanBank, said shewas defrauded of aroundR7 000 inDe-cember. She said there needed to be more securitychecks by banks to ensure against criminal behav-iour. She has no idea how the fraudsters got hold ofher banking details.Dinga said she was a victim of a similar case as

of that of Xolisile Trongo who had been defrauded ofR3000 fromhis credit card in January and suspectedit was an inside job.PEExpress reported lastweek thatTrongo,whoal-

so banks with African Bank, said he was awakenedby an SMS notice on January 18, stating that he hadwithdrawn an amount of R1 169.“The first thing I did was locate mywallet. I could

notbelieveit,becausemycardwasstill inmywallet,”Trongo, a barman at Walmer Country Club, said.The next day, another R1 594waswithdrawn from

hisaccountbeforehecouldalerthisbankof theprob-

lem.Trongo saidwhere as he usually received notifica-

tion detailing where and when he had withdrawnmoney from his account, he had received no confir-mation of location when the money was stolen fromhis card.African Bank has since reimbursed both Trongo

and Dinga.Dinga saidwhile she appreciates African Bank re-

turning hermoney, she needed to knowwho the cul-prits were so the situation could be averted.“Who is to say that these criminals won’t use my

card again? How did they get my information andwhy can’t these people be found?” said a distraughtDinga.African Bank media spokesperson, Louise Brug-

man, said credit card fraud and theft remain an in-dustrywide problemsaying, “Thebankgenerally re-imburses clients when they are victims of fraud, ifthe investigation outcome is in favour of the custom-er.”

IN view of the forthcoming SGB elections inMarch 2015, parent communities should identi-fy suitable candidates to serve their schools asgovernors for the next three years.

This is one of the messages that the localbranch of the National Association of SchoolGoverning Bodies wants to get across to par-ents as part of their recently launched initia-tive, in association with churches, to restorethe moral values of learners in schools,amongst other aims.

The recommend that candidates should bepersons of integrity who are respected parentsin the community. Ideally they should possessthe skills and knowledge to deal with, amongstothers, budgets and finance, knowledge of themaintenance of buildings and grounds and ap-pointment of staff.

They must be prepared to adopt a constitu-tion, sign a code of conduct and adhere to it andsupport the principal and staff in carrying outtheir professional responsibilities.

The SGB promotes the best interests of theschool and strive to ensure its development

through the provision of quality education forall learners at the school. They must also ssistin raising funds for the school.

What Governing Body members can’t expect is that they will be able to:

(a) Get paid or rewarded for their efforts;(b) Take over the running of the school’s fi-

nances;(c) Be the principal’s boss;(d) Fire the teachers they don’t like;(e) Sit in on team selections;(f) Decide which pupils should have which

teachers, or which teachers will teach whichclasses;

(g) Sit in on classes to see how teachers teach;(h) Get a discount on school fees; or(i) Decide which children from the communi-

ty will get into the school.. In support of this initiative to raise aware-

Du Plessis is one of the Ambassadors involved in theABC4DBCProgramme (Able-BodiedChildren champion-ing the cause of Disabled-Bodied Children) for The HopeJones Foundation that aims to enable and empower chil-dren with physical and mental disabilities to reach theirfull potential.TheAPDDaycareCentre (Association for thePhysical-ly Disabled) was established seven years ago to providephysical therapy and education for 28 children betweenthe ages of 1 and 8 years.“Wewould like to thank Inge and theHope Jones Foun-dation for their continuous support. The money raisedby Inge was used to provide snacks, cool drinks andsweets for the children. And what was left was used tocontribute to a staff Christmas breakfast. Keep up thegood work. The award winning up! will be introducedbelowVolkswagenPoloVivo andPolo,whichhave been the top two best-selling passengermodels in South Africa since 2010.At 3,540 mm in length, 1,641 mm in width

and 1,489 mm in height, the up! is one of thesmallest four-seater cars on the market. Itsoverall length consists of short body over-

hangs and a long wheelbase of 2,420 mm.Thanks to these dimensions the turning cir-cle of the up! is an unusually compact 9.8 me-tres.Use of space inside the car is exceptionally

good, with space for four adults. This is dueto the wheelbase, which is one of the longestin the segment, combinedwith an engine thatis mounted well forward. The 251-litre boot isalso significantly larger than is typical in thisclass.When the rear seat is fully folded, cargospace increases to 951 litres.The up! has a large bootlid, which extends

TheAddo Elephant Trail Runwill put trailrunners’ mental and physical resilience tothetestwitha44kmor76kmtrailrunthroughthe vast Addo Elephant National Park.TheAddoElephantTrailRunwas firstheld

in 2005 and originally consisted of two events-a100mile (161km)anda50mile (80.4km)trailrun. The 100mile runwas a 24-hour race thatsaw participants kick-off their run in thedark, and run through to the following night.The oldest finisher of the 100 mile race was

64 with the youngest being 24.Sheena O’Keeffe from Free Spirit Adven-

tures said, the trail takes runners throughspectacularscenerynestled intheheartof theEastern Cape, including some serious climbsup onto the plateau, and a number of pictur-esque river crossings.“The checkpoints are known to be some of

the best to be found in trail running.Mannedby friendly volunteers and stocked with run-ners’ favourite foods, they give each athletea chance to take a break, re-fuel and interactbefore they continue.”Fortunate runnerswill also catch glimpses

of various animals, including antelope, ele-phants, ostriches, leopard tortoises, andplen-ty of birds. The route follows sections of pri-vate farmland, as well as sections of the Parkthat are not generally open to the public.
