Die syfers wys voorts dat die bedrag uit-staande vir langer as 90 dae van R1,437 mil-jard tot R1,716 miljard oor die 12-maande-tydperk toegeneemhet, terwyl die totale be-drag uitstaande vir tussen 61 en 90 dae vanR75,3 miljoen geklim het tot R107,6 mil-joen-jaar-op-jaar.

According to dad Bevan, Declan is a pleasant ba-by who loves vegetables and playing with balls.

THE internationally-acclaimed film school,AFDA, is opening a campus in Port Elizabethin 2015.

This is the fourth campus of the SouthAfri-can School of Motion Picture Medium andLive Performance to open in South Africa.The other campuses are in Johannesburg,Cape Town and Durban.

The School’s Co-founder and Chairman,GarthHolmes, said they are excited to be partof the growing film industry in the Eastern

Cape. “Webelieve that the regionhas a strongintellectual capital base, cultural heritageand capacity for generating local stories andentertainment production content.

“People create an industry; an industrydoesn’t create people,” he said.

The first year intake for 2015will be limitedto 35 students on a first registered, first onclass list basis. As a special introductory of-fer, all students who pay the registration feebefore January 15, 2015, will receive a R10 000reduction in fees, excluding registration fee.

Applications are now open for a Bachelorof Arts Motion Picture Medium degree, in-cluding the following disciplines: Producing;Directing; Writing; Editing; Sound Design;Production Design; Costume, Make-up andStyling; Cinematography and Data Manage-ment.

AFDAis theonlySouthAfrican filmschoolever to have won an Academy award for thebest foreign student film and to have been afinalist for the prestigious Court de Metrageat Cannes.

The school has, since the inception of theSAFTAs (South African Film and TelevisionAwards), received 21 out of a possible 24 nom-inations for best student film and won theaward 7 out of the 8 possible times that theaward has been presented.

AFDA is a full member of CILECT, the in-ternational association of film and TVschools.

BAYWEST Managing Director Gavin Blowssaid the developers of the Port Elizabeth Re-gional Mall are “working hard” with the Ap-ple Express NGO and Apple Express Rail(AER) “to get the iconic tourism train up andrunning next year.”

Blows told Metro Minutes that a stationhad already been included in the plans forBaywest Mall.Linked to this was “the possibility of a

tram ferrying commuters a short distancefrom the station to the mall and back.“This is a project we hope to see come to

fruition, not only because it will add an en-tirely unique experience for visitors to themall, but also because it will be a huge boost

to tourism in this region.”“We are in full support of Apple Express

Rail, which is presenting a business case ontaking over operation of the line from Tran-snet Freight Rail (TFR).“A similar cession of a railway line has oc-

1 kg cake flour100 g fresh or 50g instant yeast1/2 l milk200 g sugar450 g butter, unsaltedpeel of a lemon1/2 tsp level cardamon and 1/2 level

tsp mace or all spice10 g salt500 g raisins150 g currants150 g chopped candied orange peel

(orangeat) and candied lemon peel(zitronat); if you can find a mix of boththat would be the best150 g chopped sweet almonds100 g butter100g sugar1 tbsp vanilla powder125 g powdered sugar

Baking Instructions:

- Put flour into a baking bowland make a pit in the middle;add the crumbled yeast with 2tbsp sugar and some milk intothe pit. Whisk it to a “pre-dough”, cover it with a kitchencloth and keep it in a warmplace for 40-50 minutes.- Mix flour and pre-dough

with remaining milk and sug-ar, warm butter, lemon peel,spices and salt and whisk it re-ally good until the dough peels

away from the inside bowl wall.- Boil water and scald raisins

and dry them with a kitchencloth or paper.- Add raisins, currants, can-

died orange and lemon peel andalmonds to the dough – kneadthem into the dough and forma ball out of it.Cover it again and let it rest

for 30-40 minutes, dough needsto rise.- Again knead the dough very

good, and let it rise for another30-40 minutes, then form it intoa Stollen. Form round flat(about 3cm high) piece, foldover to have half circle shape,and then press with the rollingpin into the upper third part ofthe dough, creating a fold.- Preheat oven to 190-200 de-

grees C- Grease a baking tray with

butter and put the Stollen ontoit, let it bake for 70-90 minutesuntil the surface is goldenbrown; if you see that it getsbrown too early cover it withaluminium foil or greasedparchment paper.- When the Stollen is done,

brush butter onto the surface.Sprinkle first with coarse

sugar then with a mix of vanil-la, sugar and powdered sugar.

CHEF Ralph Gottschalk’s business The Pastry-works has become a household name in PortElizabeth, not only for its exquisite sweet treatsbut also for its fun cooking classes for young andold, couples and corporates.

Chef Ralph is, however, also making waveson the culinary scene both nationally and inter-nationally having recently opened the new SAAcademy of Culinary Arts (SAACA) in PE.

Ralph and his wife, Cherilyn, and boys, Chris-topher (15) and Alex (11), settled in PE in 2005and opened The Pastryworks.

Afterbeingresponsible forcateringat theNel-son Mandela Bay Stadium during the 2010 FifaSoccer World Cup, Ralph was also contracted toprovide catering in the Sao Paulo stadium inBrazil during the Soccer World Cup this yearcombining two of his biggest passions - cookingand soccer.

We asked Ralph a few questions about his lifeas a well-travelled and respected chef.

Why did you decide to settle in PE – and hasPE been good to you?

It was quite difficult travelling the world withour children while Cherilyn’s family lived herein Port Elizabeth. Apart from the fact that it isnice to be close to family. It’s also very handy.Cherilyn’s Dad and Mom look after our childrennearly every day. They have been a great help;we couldn’t have done without them.

Why did you decide to become a chef?I was too tall to become a pilot, too tall for the

Navy, and I loved to bake and to cook. My grand-father told me when I was 14, a profession as achef is a good choice; it doesn’t matter what hap-pens in the world, people need to eat!

Whatdoyouenjoymost aboutbeinga chef?Looking at other people’s faces when they see

or eat something we have made. A smile is thebiggest compliment!

Whyareyourclasses for couples/corporatesso popular?

Television shows like Masterchef and thecake boss, as well as other cooking shows, havebecome very popular. “Come dine with me” isanothershowthatpeoplestillenjoyandthishasled to a different way of thinking about beingin the kitchen. People find enjoyment and relax-ation through cooking and it has become a verysociable thing to do.

Today it is cool to be in the kitchen, to ex-change ideas, change recipes and to cook some-thing from a different country. Corporate func-tions are popular because it is something com-pletely different. Here they make the mealthemselves, and they are very competitive.They can also have a good laugh and relax andsimply enjoy the evening, as well as learningsomething new.

Have you met any “celebrity chefs”?Yes, many, including 1 to 3 star Michelin

ACCORDING to research Marijuana is one ofthe world’s most commonly used illegal drugs.There are approximately 300 million usersworldwide. Marijuana comes from a plantcalled “Cannabis sativa”.Marijuana impacts on the developing brain

of children differently from the way it impactson the adult brain. Many researchers are mak-ing the case that children andmarijuanadonotbelong together. They likely have no idea howsmokingpotcanimpactonmemoryprocessing,as well as the ability to control emotions.A tween or teen’s brain absorbs marijuana

differently from a fully developed brain. Chil-drenneedtoknowthat thereareshort-termandlong-term effects that come with smoking pot.The short-term impact can mean not makingthe play in the big game or impacting GPA be-cause it’s harder to remember something for atest.Smoking marijuana has all the known side-

effects of smoking tobacco except nicotine ad-diction. So a heavy and early smoker of mari-juana is increasing the probability of chroniclung disease and cancer as he or she builds uppack-years. But the active ingredients in mari-juana are dozens of different cannabinoids ofwhich the best known is Tetra-hydro-cannabi-nol. The effect of these active drugs is at the en-docanninoid site (also called the anandamidereceptor) in the brain.

Effects of marijuana on the nervous system:Tetrahydrocannabinol acts on cannabinoid

receptors which are found on neurons in manyplaces in the brain. These brain areas are in-volved in memory (the hippocampus), concen-tration (cerebral cortex), perception (sensoryportions of the cerebral cortex) and movement(the cerebellum, substantia nigra, globus pallid-us). When Tetrahydrocannabinol activates can-nabinoidreceptors, it interfereswiththenormalfunctioning of these brain areas.

In low to medium doses, marijuana causes:•relaxation•reduced coordination•reduced blood pressure•sleepiness•disruption in attention•an altered sense of time and space...a good

reason not to drive or operate machinery whileunder the influence.In high doses, marijuana can cause:•hallucinations•delusions•impaired memory•disorientationThe effects of marijuana start as soon as one

to tenminutes after it is takenand can last threeto four hours or even longer.Whether marijuana can produce addiction is

controversial. Also controversial is whethermarijuana causes long-term mental abnormali-ties.However, because there isahigh level of tarand other chemicals inmarijuana, smoking it issimilartosmokingcigarettes.Thelungsgetabigdose of chemicals that increase the chances oflung problems and cancer later in life.

Other effects of early marijuana use are:•Earlymarijuanausershavelesswhitematter

in their brains and the total size of the brain issmaller. White matter affects how the brainlearns and functions.•There are fewer connections of one brain cell

to another resulting in slowing thinking•Early use is strongly associated with schizo-

phrenia and other psychotic and anxiety disor-ders. It is very difficult to prove that marijuanacauses the disorder or just used as self-treat-ment.•Heavy and/or prolonged use leads to lower

IQ’s and serious memory disorders.There are no controlled studies of the effects

of marijuana on children or teens, but studiesshow that early use is very different from useafter age eighteen years in its long-term effects.Smokingmarijuana leads topoordriving.Teensdrive poorly even when not intoxicated. Mari-juana stays in the urine for up to three weeks.If your teen has an accident (very common) andhas marijuana in the urine, he or she may be

convicted of driving while intoxicated whetherthey were intoxicated or not.

How long does tetrahydrocannibol stay inyour body and for how long can it be detected after you use marijuana?Theamountof timedependsonseveral factors

such as how much a person has smoked, howlong a person has smoked for, and the methodused todetectTetrahydrocannibolor itsmetabo-lites. Marijuana can be detected in urine, bloodand saliva usingmethods called thin layer chro-matography, high pressure liquid chromatogra-phy, gas chromatography, enzyme immu-noassay and radioimmunoassay.Themost psychoactive ingredient inmarijua-

na is delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol. This is bro-kendowninto several othercompounds thatarealso psychoactive. The half-life of Tetrahydro-cannibol is about 24 hours. However, themetab-olites of Tetrahydrocannibol can be detected for45 to 60 days after the last use.Approximately half of the Tetrahydrocannab-

inol is excreted over several days, and the re-mainder by the end of about a week. However,some metabolites of the Tetrahydrocannibol , anumber of which may still be active in the sys-tem, can be detected in the body at least thirtydays following ingestionof a single doseand, fol-lowing chronic use, in the urine for severalweeks.

TALK about fairytale endings – they don’t getmuch tenser than this: a game that at one stageit seemed the All Blacks might just steal fromunder the nose of Kyle Brown’s Blitzbokke.

True, in the end it was a fairly comfortable26-17 victory for Brown’s team, but for long peri-ods it looked as though it could go either way– specially when the All Blacks were first toscore in the opening minutes of this 10-minutesa side World Sevens Series final last Sunday atour handsome Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.

Against Australia the South Africans had ap-peared most unsettled as they fell behind 0-10with less than half the allotted seven-minute-a-side playing time having expired. Indeed, forsome time it looked as though the Blitzbokke’sgoose was well and truly cooked.

But full credit to Brown’s team: they learnt alot from that game and were a far more settledunit in the all-important final. The performancenot only gave them their second successive winover the All Blacks in the Series, but also gainedthemautomaticentrytothe2016OlympicGames.

If over the two days of the PE tournament,

there’d been a Man of the Series award, whowould you have voted for? There’s little doubtmany would have seriously considered thefleet-footedSeabeloSenatla,by far thecountry’sspeediestwingat top level.He’selusive, too,andit surely can’t be long before this Welkom-bornlad takes the next logical step... to Springboksquad level. He’s without doubt the speediestplayer on two legs in our rugby at the moment.So much so it’s quite possible – in fact, desirable– that he should soon be made such an offer.

Looking ahead to next year the Springbokshave announced that their home Rugby Cham-pionship match against the All Blacks on July25 will again be at Ellis Park, where this yearthey beat New Zealand 27-25 in a cliff-hangerthat produced one of the best performances bythe Springboks since Meyer took over as coach.No doubt the All Blacks management will havepaid the choice of venue close attention. SUZUKI has had a busy and successfulyear launching and revamping cars ofjust about any shape and size.

Just in time from Summer they hadtheir latest launch of the new year - theSplash, a hatchback to fit between theirentry-level Alto minicar and Swifthatchback. Selling at between R124 900and R149 900, the newcomer’s fresh,youthful styling and versatile layout,while combining fuel-efficiency with ex-cellent performance, is expected to ap-peal to a wide range of buyers.

ExteriorIts flat backside and high roofline are

probably the first things one noticesfrom the outside. For me the advantagethis extra height brings was one of theSplash’s most impressive features.

InteriorThe height and relatively long wheel-

base combines to create a surprisingroomy interior space, not to mentionbigger than expected boot space. The

rear bench seat offers a 60/40 split.The high roof gives the impression of

space – I have climbed into SUV’s whereI felt more cramped and close to the roofthan in the Splash. It has ample legroomandheadroomtoprovideseatingforfiveadult occupants. The high roofline al-lows the seating positions to be raisedfor good all-round visibility.

The layout of the controls and instru-ments is user-friendly. The large, white-faced analogue speedometer is posi-tioned directly ahead of the driver. Itsdigital info display is easy to read andindicates range, average fuel consump-tion and instant fuel consumption.

The Splash offers a variety of storageoptions. Front door binnacles with inte-grated bottle holders, front and rear cupholders, and seatback pockets are stand-ard.

In the case of the GL models, a sepa-rate rev counter adds a sporty element.

I liked the high-mounted gear shiftlever which is within easy reach. Athree-spoke steering wheel is stand-ard, and the GL version is equippedwith steering wheel-mounted audiosystem controls.

SpecificationsThe Suzuki Splash model range con-

sists of three models, all powered by thesame1,2ipetrolengine,butwithachoiceof two transmissions and two specifica-tionlevels - thebasicGAandhigherspecGL (which is offered with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto).

Even the most affordable model in therange, the 1.2 GA offers an impressivelist of standard features and is equippedwith power steering, aircon and centrallocking. All specifications have dual air-bags and anti-lock brakes.

In addition the GL models have fog-lights, separate rev counter, a four-speaker CD/audio system with auxilia-ry and USB inputs, as well as audio con-trols on the tilt-adjustable three-spokesteering wheel, keyless entry and elec-tric windows.

RideThe second most impressive feature,

after the spacious interior, is the zippydrive the Splash offers. Its engine is ea-gertoperformandithasadeliciousroaralmost giving it the sporty feeling thatthe location of the separate rev counter

ENTRIES for the 91st SPAR River Mile areopen ahead of the event on February 14 and15, 2015.

South Africa’s oldest open water swim-ming event is just one of many events whichform part of the 2015 Festival which will seetop SA singer Heinz Winckler performing onthe Saturday (Valentine’s day) and world-re-nowned mentalist Larry Soffer taking to thestage on the Sunday.

A packed weekend of activities will startwith the Wimpy 5km family fun run and befollowed by a brand new event to the EasternCape, the triathlon super sprint team relayevent which is open to mixed teams of threepeople where each team member completesa 250 swim, 6km MTB and a 1.6km run in re-lay fashion.

The event, sanctioned by Eastern ProvinceTriathlon, is a great inclusion into this fami-ly weekend and a great opportunity to get in-volved in multi discipline events.

The Saturday afternoon hosts the family

half-mile swim, the disabled mile swim andthe Speedo double Mile wetsuit swim beforeHeinz Winckler takes to the stage.

Sunday’s programme starts off at 11amwith the Wakaberry Kids across the riverraces for children 12 years and under whoaren’t doing the Mile race.

Not to be missed is the celebrity swim-offbetween some of our EP Kings rugby stars at1pm.

TheSPAR ladies’mile takes place at 1.15pmfollowed by the men’s mile at 2:15pm beforeone of the world’s top magicians and mental-ists, Larry Soffer, hosts the prize giving cere-mony for the 91st River Mile.

Early bird discounted entries are availableuntil the end of December with all the Mileand doubleMile entrants who register beforeJanuary 1 receiving a complimentary RiverMile t-shirt.

About IT Tri – Round 2

The second round of the About IT Triath-lon Summer Series, a sprint distance triath-lonwhich is ideal for novice individuals andteams, will take place on Sunday, December21 at Pollok Beach at 8am.

A kids’ development triathlon for chil-dren between the ages of 8 years and 11 takesplace at 6pm on Saturday, December 20.

Round 2 is the “:double up” triathlon withparticipants completing two laps of eachdis-cipline to cover a total distance of a 750mswim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

THE Eastern Cape 4x4 Challenge Clubwill be hosting a 4x4 Challenge eventon Saturday, December 20, at ParadiseBeach near Jeffreys Bay.

The event will host all the regularcompetition classes, as well as stand-ard production 4x4 “bakkies”.

Members of the public are welcometo enter their 4x4 vehicles in the Stand-ard Production class, but a crash hel-

met is mandatory. The event will startat 9am with competitor registrationfrom 7:30am to 8:30am.

Entrance fee R30 for adults and R20for children under 16. Refreshmentswill be on sale throughout the day.
