Planting

with thePresidents

History tells us much

about Presidents George

Washington and Thomas

Jefferson. However, did you know

that they were both plant lovers

and foodies? Both Jefferson and

Washington did much to advance

horticulture on their respective

estates Monticello and Mt. Vernon.

They introduced new crops, new

ways to plant, and new machinery.

Children ages 7 and older are

invited to celebrate this Presidents

Day on Sunday, February 17,

from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at The

Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris

Township. Enjoy an illustrated talk,

practice some gardening skills, plant up a flat of heirloom veg-

etables, make a Federal Period

craft, and best of all, sample some

Founding Foodies snacks. Every

child takes home a ‘Presidential

Tree’ sapling for planting in their

own garden this spring.

For more information and to

register, please call 973-326-7603

or visit www.arboretumfriends.org.

Grow, Cook, EatA New Garden Series at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Do you like to eat vegetables as much as you like to garden? If you are interested in learning more about new

and different varieties of vegetables, as well as what to do when all those summer squash ripen on the same

day, this new series is perfect for you.

Held on the third Wednesday of the month from March through November, Horticultural Program Special-

ists Gwen Montgomery and Cynthia Triolo introduce you to a different garden vegetable each month to help bring

gardening full circle for you and your family. You learn growing and planting tips for those tried and true varieties of

vegetables and unusual ones as well. Seeds, recipes, and best of all, taste tests are sure to inspire you to get outside

and plant something so that you too can go from garden to table.

In the past five years, interest in and demand for Com-

munity Gardens has exploded. With over 30 years of

community garden experience, a strong commitment

to education, and our treasured partnership with Rutgers

Cooperative Extension, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is

the perfect venue for a conference focusing on Community

Gardens. Whether you’re an experienced or new communi-

ty gardener, a Community Garden manager or coordinator,

or an activist trying to get a Community Garden started,

you will want to attend this program on Saturday, March

2 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The impressive list of speakers, experts in their field, address

topics, such as Growing Small Fruits, Beekeeping, Organic Con-

trol of Common Vegetable Insects, Best Management Practices

for Garden Managers, and Seed Saving. The keynote speaker is

the distinguished Joan Dye Gussow, author and Professor Emeri-

tus of Columbia University, and whom the New York Times has

called the “matriarch of the local food movement.”

For complete details, visit www.arboretumfriends.org. Lunch is provided. The snow date is Sunday, March 3. Register before February 4 to receive the discounted registration fee of $50. Registrations after February 4 are $60.

The waltz was the most popular

dance at the start of the 20th

century when young Matilda

Frelinghuysen was learning to dance.

During Matilda’s teenage years, this

ballroom dance craze swept the na-

tion. Now you can learn the waltz andother period dances on Saturday,

March 16 (snow date March 23) at

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in

Morris Township at the 10th annual

Matilda’s Tea. Beginning at 1:30 p.m.

young people, ages 6 and older, with

their adult companions, learn the

dances that every young person should

know. All young tea-takers should

wear their best dancing slippers and

be prepared to grace the dance floor

while partaking in tea, pastries, andsandwiches, both sweet and savory.

All young tea-takers create a fan for

use when curtseying, and a Venetian

mask, so important for your next Ball!

Pre-registration is required.

Are you interested in attracting

colorful birds and butterflies

to your yard? In this family-

oriented program held at Pyramid

Mountain Natural Historic Area in

Montville, discover those beautiful

native plants that can attract wildlife

to your property. Bring your curios-

ity, and learn a naturalist’s secrets on

Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m.

Through hands-on activities, kids learn how flowers attract pol-

linating bees and butterflies, and

how plants attract birds to eat their

seeds and fruit. Make a dozen “seed

balls” to take home and toss in to

your garden. Then wait and watch

to see the native wildflowers grow!

Get all your burning nature ques-

tions answered…What’s in it for the

wildflowers? What are the advan-

tages of planting natives? Where do

the butterflies and bees go in winter?

What is a seed, anyway?

Learn how to build a log-pile shel-

ter where butterflies can safely spend

the winter, and how easy it is to provide

water that attracts birds. Make your yard

wildlife-friendly, and take home easy-to-

grow native wildflower seeds that you

can plant in your garden.

Propagating native plants is acrucial step in bringing small wildlife,

such as butterflies and their cater-

pillars, to your yard. These plants

provide vital food and shelter for a

wide variety of fascinating animals.

Appropriate for ages six and older, the

program costs $5 per child. Space is

limited, so please call ahead.

For more information or to register,

 please call 973-334-3130.
