- it’s maple sugaring season at the Great Swamp

Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township!

There are many opportunities for learning how to tap

maple trees and make syrup.

Experience the entire process from tree to pancake-

topping treat, complete with a delicious syrup taste

test, including our own homemade syrup. Maple

Sugaring Demonstrations are held on most Saturdaysand Sundays in January and February (All dates

listed in the calendar). The hour-long demonstrations

begin at 2 p.m. and at the peak of the season, on

February 27 and 28, demos are held 1 p.m and

2:30 p.m. The cost is $3 per person age 3 and older.

Seating is limited and filled on a first come, first

served basis, so it is recommended that you

arrive early.

FESTIV LFESTIVALCelebrate the peak of the maple sugaring

season with the annual Maple Sugar Festival,

from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March

5, at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education

Center. There is so much to enjoy, with a

wide variety of planned activities, including

tree tapping demonstrations, maple cream

making and tasting, games, crafts, and plenty

of sugaring information while you experience

all the facets of the syrup making process

firsthand.

According to Jenny Gaus-Myers,

Superintendent of the Morris County Park Commission facility, “People don’t look at the maple syrup on their

table the same way after experiencing this festival! They begin to appreciate the quality differences, as well as the

process required to make this tasty treat. It’s a fun and educational day for everyone!”

So head outside on a crisp winter day and take a guided ‘Hike Through Maple Sugaring History’ to discover

how sugaring has changed over time since it was started by the Native Americans hundreds of years ago.

Afterwards, you will be ready to enjoy a cup of hot, homemade cider by the fire while watching the engaging

demonstration of the evaporation process on an authentic wood-burning evaporator. If you are thinking of

making your own syrup at home, spiles are on sale along with easy instructions on how to get started. A maple

Bald Eagle TripsAlong the Delaware River

Though you may not think of New Jersey

as a great place to view these magnificent

birds of prey, it actually is, and winter

is the perfect time to spot them. Each winter,

bald eagles congregate along major waterways,

including the Delaware River to fish the open

waters all season. At this time, it’s easy to find

eagles soaring overhead or diving into the icy

waters for prey.

Take advantage of the perfect time for

an eagle watching expedition, and join the

environmental education staff of the Great

Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham

Township on these popular annual Bald Eagle

Watching Trips. With knowledgeable staff, travel

by van to locations along the Upper Delaware

River in New York and Pennsylvania. Along the

way, learn all about the amazing natural history

of the eagles, enjoy complimentary hot cocoa,

and receive educational hand-outs. At each stop,

guides set up a high-powered spotting scope toenhance viewing. Don’t miss out on seeing our

nation’s majestic symbol in the wild!

Trips, for ages 18 and older, are scheduled

for Sunday, January 3, Saturday, January 16,

and Sunday, February 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Please wear warm clothing, and bring a lunch

and binoculars. Binoculars are also available to

borrow. The cost is $35 per person, and space

is strictly limited to 9 participants per trip.

Preregistration is required. Trips leave at 9 a.m.

Snowshoe SundaysWith a forecast for a snowy winter, this is the ideal time to experience the fabulous sport of snowshoeing.Guided by a naturalist, move quietly through the winter landscape, looking for signs of wildlife and viewing

beautiful scenery, all while getting a workout.

Snowshoe Sundays are scheduled for select Sundays in January, February, and March (see calendar

for specific dates), when the weather and snow conditions are favorable. No experience is necessary, and

if you are a snowshoe novice, you can test out the various snowshoes to rent, practice your technique, and

have your questions answered by arriving at 1 p.m. For those using their own snowshoes, please arrive at

1:30 p.m. when the group takes to the trails for a guided, 90-minute adventure. These programs are designed

for ages 10 and older, and there is a general admission fee of $5 per person. For those who need to rent

snowshoes, there is an additional $10 fee for the rental.

Snowshoe Rentals for 2016! If you already know how to snowshoe or want to venture on your own, there are various sizes, including

children’s sizes, available for a one-day rental at Pyramid Mountain NHA. You must be 18 years or older to

rent shoes. A photo ID or rental deposit is required, and the cost is $10 per pair, paid by cash or check only.

Shoes can be rented between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and must be returned the same day between 3:30 p.m. and

4:30 p.m. Please call in advance to ensure that shoes are available and conditions are suitable.

Kids! Take a Day Offwith Nature!

Don’t sit at home, bored out of your mind these

winter holidays! Join the environmental education staff

for fun, interactive, and educational programs on Mar-

tin Luther King Day, Presidents’ Day, and Good Friday.

If you are in kindergarten through third grade, spend

a day of fun with indoor and outdoor nature-themed

activities. Have a blast and bring your friends!

On Monday, January 18, come and be a part

of the exciting program, A Day Off with Nature:

Tracking! at Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area

in Montville Township. Winter is the best time of year

to learn about animal tracks and signs as they are so

readily visible in the snow. Learn how to decode clues

that animals leave behind to determine who has been

roaming the woods and what they are busy doing.

You will practice moving your body through the four

mammal gaits, make and paint your own track mold,

hear nature stories read aloud, and best of all, snowshoe

or hike on the trails to look for animal signs.

On Monday, February 15, experience A Day Off

with Nature: Skull-astic at the Great Swamp Out-door Education Center in Chatham Township. Learn

the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates,

predators and prey. You can compare the real skulls and

teeth of wild animals and examine how your own teeth

look and function, too! After a walk and ‘bone-y’ craft,

the day finishes with a LIVE animal presentation.

On Friday, March 25, come to the Great Swamp

Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township for

A Day Off with Nature: Frog Frenzy! Spring is the

perfect time to learn about amphibian friends as they

are emerging from their winter hibernation and calling

for mates. Using props and touchable artifacts, start bylearning about the differences between reptiles and am-

phibians. Act out the lifecycle of an amphibian, learn

to sing like a frog, and take a walk through the swamp

to the amphibian breeding grounds to listen for their

unique calls.

The programs run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring a

nut-free lunch and snack. Preregistration is required as

space is limited. Each program costs $30 per child.

Cooking the Books: 18th Century Recipes for 21st Century Palatesat The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Drams, gills, pecks – measurements are not the only things that have changed in the kitchen over the

past 300 years! Cooking the Books, the new cooking series at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum explores

recipes of the past from the Elizabeth Donnell Kay Rare Book Collection housed at the Haggerty Education

Center. Programs begin with a talk by Lesley Parness, Superintendent of Horticultural Education, about

the selected book, and some pertinent food history. Then, Chef Cynthia Triolo, Horticultural Program

Specialist, demonstrates preparation of these recipes, explaining the unusual ingredients and cooking

techniques updated for modern-day cooks. Finally, enjoy sampling a variety of dishes.

The first of the series, scheduled for Sunday, March 13, is ‘Custards, Quaking Puddings, and aSillybub’ will whet your sweet tooth and shine a new light on these dessert favorites.

Getting Froggy This Spring! After a long, cold winter, the wood frogs and spring peepers, which have been frozen for months, emerge en masse from the warming spring ground and move into

their breeding pools. By late March, the forests and marshes of Morris County are teeming with the sounds of ‘peeping and quacking’ as these frogs sing their love songs.

This is always a popular time to join one of the many naturalist-guided frog programs, which are often jam-packed with eager frog fans. This year the Great Swamp

Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Twp. and Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in Montville Twp. are offering additional programs to ensure that you can enjoy

the frog experience. Listening to these frogs is absolutely something you have to hear yourself, and it is quite hilarious to realize these strange sounds are made by frogs!

To ensure you have a fantastic experience, if the frogs are not calling on a particular day due to weather, you can still visit their breeding pools in the forest, learn amazing

facts about the different species, and discover myriad and ever-changing signs of spring. These guided walking tours are held rain or shine. Preregistration is required.

Spring Spotting Challenge!It’s the beginning of spring, and everyone is invited to get outdoors on a guided walk

with a naturalist to be part of an exciting new program. Track the appearance of plants

and animals at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center, Chatham Township andPyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in Montville Township, facilities of the Morris County Park

Commission. Learn fascinating information about the plants and animals that are expected to emerge that

week and the latest sightings reports.

You receive a checklist to track when each new event occurs and compare the list to last year’s dates.

During each walk, work together with the group to spot and record new spring wildlife sightings. Every

walk you join, you have an opportunity to add more sightings to your list. Groups with the most sightings

at the end of the season, get bragging rights!

Programs in this series are open to all ages and cost $3 per person over age 3. Preregistration is

required. Dates, times, and locations for the Spring Sighting Series are detailed in the calendar. Thefirst events are held at the Great Swamp OEC on Sunday, March 20, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and at Pyramid

The Sixth Annual Community Garden Conference

at The Frelinghuysen ArboretumThe Annual Community Garden Conference, which provides a forum for community

garden managers to obtain and share the latest information will be held at The

Frelinghuysen Arboretum on Saturday, March 5. The Friends of The Frelinghuysen

Arboretum and Rutgers Cooperative Extension have partnered for six years to grow and

enhance the offerings at each annual conference. These full day conferences provide

educational opportunities to learn about New Jersey’s community gardens, explore

the best management practices, and provide educational opportunities for vegetable

gardeners.

According to Lesley Parness, Superintendent of Horticultural Education at the Morris

County Park Commission, “We are proud to host the state’s only Community Garden

Conference and to support Community Gardens throughout New Jersey. The keynote

speaker and session presenters are all chosen for their knowledge in this area, which has

grown significantly in response to concerns about food safety, sustainability, and the

increasing awareness of food security issues.” The educational sessions, all taught by experts, address topics, such as Growing

Tomatoes, Beekeeping, Soil Management, Small Space Gardening, Growing Lettuce,

and Best Management Practices for Garden Coordinators.

K eynote speaker Karen Washington, called the Godmother, the Queen, and the

Grande Dame of community gardening has worked tirelessly turning empty lots in the

Bronx into productive community gardens. Washington, previously served as New York

City Community Garden Coalition’s (NYCCGC) board president, as well as served on

the board of the New York Botanical Garden. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one

of their 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 she was

awarded with the James Beard Leadership Award.

through adults, have an opportunity to develop skills and have fun!

This exceptional camp is flexible for all campers, and there are

many options available. Skaters can choose the number of weeks,

a full-day or half-day camp, and lunch options.

The on-ice portion of the camp allows skaters to develop

their skills and progress to the next level. Sessions include: Power

Stroking, Creative Footwork, Jumps, Spins, Moves, Ice Dancing,

and Artistry in Motion. The off-ice sessions include: Ballet, Jazz,

Leaps n’ Turns, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Circuit Training, Stretching,

Conditioning, and Plyometrics. Private lessons are available upon

request for both on and off-ice sessions.

Beginner skaters are encouraged to take a private lesson

for an assessment prior to the start of camp to ensure proper

placement. Instruction for these classes is offered by Mennen’selite coaching staff. Mennen also offers special clinics, the Summer

Seminar Series, that are incorporated into Camp Mennen.

Campers can take full advantage of the unique opportunity to

participate in Mennen’s 12th Annual Summer Extravaganza. This

is an ice show with a collaboration of Learn-To-Skate participants,

Men and Ladies soloists, Pairs, Dance, and professional staff.

“Branching Out!” is the hands-on, gardening program for young

people who are encouraged to play

in the dirt. This is the 44th garden-

ing season for this hands-on, edu-

cational program that takes place

on Saturdays in the spring and

two days a week in the summer,

depending on age level. Garden-

ers may attend spring, summer,

or both. Children learn by tending

to their own gardens that with alittle work and much patience,

the food you grow yourself is

often better. Time to get dirty

and get digging! Registration

Travels in Time: Recipes for Adventure!Budding chefs discover the recipe for adventure while cooking in three different

time periods. Campers ‘travel through time’ to the 1840s, 1880s, and 1920s to discover

the ways their food is linked to farming, milling, science, nutrition, and society, as well

as the food preparation involved in the simplest meals.

its 40th Annual Summer Hockey School. This camp focuses onskating and fundamental hockey skills including balance, agility,

and acceleration, the use of edges, puck handling, passing, and

competitive level so they can have a lifetime of fun enjoying the

great game of ice hockey.

What makes this Hockey Camp so special is that the coaching staff is comprised of some of the

Cooper Gristmill in Chester Township,

While discovering a historic farm,

gristmill, and homestead, kids learn

about life and food on the farm inthe 1920s, experience how grain is

made into flour for food, and learn

about nutrition and early Victorian

Interested teens must complete an application

and submit a letter of recommendation. Upon

completion, CITs receive a certificate detailing

their hours of service.

The annual Junior

Police Academy

is an extremely

popular summer

camp that

provides boys and

girls lessons in

police practices

and the training involved in becoming a police officer. During this

five-day program, activities include physical training, detective work,

handcuffing techniques, motor vehicle stops, and a tour of the county

jail. Special guests have included the Mounted Unit, Sheriff’s Office,

and other State and Federal Law enforcement agencies. Each recruit

receives a hat, t-shirt, gym shorts, and bag. Upon completion of the

Academy, recruits participate in a graduation ceremony and earn an

honorary Junior Police Academy certificate. Class size is limited to 50

participants.

Camp Sunrise Lake is an adventurous, fun-filled, outdoor

recreation camp your kids will talk about for years! This camp, nowin its 8th year of operation, is situated within 1,000 acres of Lewis

Morris County Park in Morris Township. Each year, counselors

create new activities to enhance each camper’s experience year

after year.

For kids ages 5 through 11, Camp Sunrise Lake is packed with

a variety of activities to enjoy. Campers play on the sandy beach of

the beautiful Sunrise Lake or cool off after a morning of fun in the

refreshing water. They have a blast running, jumping, and climbing

across the Wibit, an inflatable obstacle course that sits on the lake,

or sliding down the Zoom Floom.

Campers enjoy daily craft sessions and a wide variety of

activities, such as parachute activities, paddle boat rides, and

relay races. Plus, there are special theme days that are designed

around all the activities. Past themes include, Super Heroes, Safari,

Olympics, Pirates, Sports, and many more! Water Wars Day will

have your child talking about all the fun they had.

CIT Program:The ‘Camper In Transition’ or CIT program is designed for kids

ages 12 and 13. This program provides a safe opportunity for kids to

explore their developing need for independence and growing maturityby giving them new experiences and added privileges that they would

not have as a general camper. The CIT program provides opportunities

to develop and expand their leadership skills, to become a role model

for younger children, assist in motivating others, and work as part of a

high-performing team, all while having fun!




A Winter’s Day on the Farm Put on hats and scarves, and enjoy some cold-weather fun

at A Winter’s Day on the Farm! The outdoor family adventure

takes place on Sunday, February 7, from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

at Foster fields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township.

Experience traditional farm life as it was lived in the early 20th

century when the estate farm opens its doors to offer many hands-

on winter-season activities.

Climb aboard the open-air, tractor-pulled wagon for a

memorable ride around the farm. In the barnyard, meet the Jersey

cows and other farm animals, such as horses, sheep, and chickens.

Discover why ice harvesting was important on the farm, and see

the special tools used to cut ice. Pitch in

and help with another cold-weather job,

and tap maple trees to collect sap. Lend

a hand with on-going daily farm chores,

such as sawing wood. Be sure to visit

the Farmhouse, and follow the inviting scent of seasonal foods cooking

on the wood-burning cook stove.

Stop by the Visitors Center, and make a family-friendly craft to

take home. You can also visit the Transportation Exhibit to see Charles

Foster’s Rockaway carriage, and Caroline Foster’s Model “T” Ford and

Hupmobile.

Admission to this event is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (65+), $6

for children ages 4 -16, and $4 for children ages 2 and 3. FREE forchildren under age 2. Friends members are half price with a current

membership card.

Morris Park Alliance UpdateThe Jets Play 60 All Access Playground located at Central Park of Morris County in

Parsippany has received the 2015 Ruth Hughes Innovative Accessible Recreation Facility

Award from the New Jersey Commission on Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities. This

all access playground provides opportunities for children with disabilities to play alongside

their peers. Shade structures are much needed to complete this special facility, and fundingactivities for the shade structures are underway with a goal for construction to be completed

for the summer of 2016.

The Park Alliance also recently received a grant from Investors Bank Foundation in the

amount of $2000 for the Central Park Cooperative Garden. This year, several varieties of

tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers, eggplants, potatoes, peppers, kale, melons, and collard greens were

harvested by clients of several area nonprofits for use in community programs. The garden helps

provide fresh vegetables and fruits to individuals and families who may not have regular access

to healthy foods.

Several new members joined the board of the Park Alliance in 2015, including John Van

Brunt of Succasunna, Pamela Fischer of Hackettstown, Adrienne Bliss Brown of Morristown,

and Vincent Maffucci of Montville.Fundraising efforts continue into 2016, including new exhibits at the Great Swamp Outdoor

Education Center and enhancements to Central Park of Morris County.

The Blackburn Lecture

Features William Bryant LoganFor more than two decades, The Blackburn Tea raised funds

to support a scholarship for students studying horticulture. This

year, the tea has evolved into The Blackburn Lecture and a

scholarship will be given to selected students in the Landscape

Technology Program at the County College of Morris. The

keynote speaker, William Bryant Logan is award-winning

author and renowned arborist. The event, held on Saturday,

February 13 at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s Haggerty

Education Center in Morris Township, is supported by The

Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

According to The Friends of The Frelinghuysen’s

Scholarship Chair Betsy Martone, “This scholarship allows

interested students the opportunity to explore the different

horticultural, environmental, and design studies offered through

the accredited CCM programs. The increased knowledge

the students acquire in the classroom and through hands-on

programs at CCM will benefit them as they enter their chosen

field in horticulture and landscape design.”

William Bryant Logan will speak about his book, Oak - The

Frame of Civilization, in which he deftly relates the delightful

history of the reciprocal relationship between humans and oak

trees since time immemorial. He has won numerous Quill and

Trowel Awards from the Garden Writers of America and won a2012 Senior Scholar Award from the New York State chapter of

the International Society of Arborists. He is on faculty at New

York Botanic Garden and is the author of three books: Air, Oak,

and Dirt, the latter of which was made into an award-winning

documentary.

The scholarship is named for Dr.

Benjamin Blackburn, a professor

of Botany at Drew University. His

involvement with the Morris County Park

Commission began with his friendship

with Henry and Robert Tubbs, whose

property Willowwood, eventually becamethe Willowwood Arboretum.

Dr. Blackburn published many

articles and wrote a number of books on

gardening, as well as being the host of a

very popular radio gardening program. He generously shared

his vast knowledge and deep love for horticulture with many

staff in the Horticulture Division and with his countless fans –

members of The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and

area garden clubs.
