TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God wri ng straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocle an drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Chris ans would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constan nople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Chris anizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the La n Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecu on and migra on as people sought tolera on for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collabora on among Chris ans of East and West, a situa on that challenges churches that s ll feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. DR. ALVEDA KING – CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST Coming to St. Augustine Church, September 14th. Abortion is the leading cause of death in the United States. Not only that, but in Memphis and the rest of the country, abortion is disproportion-ately killing African American babies. The poor, the marginalized, and minorities are entering the doors of Planned Parenthood in Memphis to abort their children. It is time to wake Memphis up, and specifically the Church, to the fact that abortion is now the greatest civil rights issue facing the United States today. A group of Catholic Memphis Cursillistas and the Memphis Coalition for Life is excited to announce that evangelist Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is coming to Memphis to address the public on this very topic! As the Executive Director of Civil Rights for the Unborn, Dr. King will inspire Christians from all denomina-tions to get involved in the fight to end the atrocity of abortion in Memphis and to save lives from abortion. The free talk and luncheon will be held on Sat. Sept. 14 from 10 AM to 1 PM at St. Augustine Church, 1169 Kerr Avenue, Memphis, TN 38106 and is open to the public. To attend or donate to this event, please visit: http://memphiscoalitionforlife.org/king
