The two species in the family Kogiidae, the pygmy (Kogia breviceps) and dwarf (K. sima) sperm whales, are found worldwide in tropical and temperate waters (Jefferson et al. 1993). These cryptic species (hereafter referred to as Kogia) are diffi- cult to detect during visual surveys due to their small size and inconspicuous surfac- ing behavior (McAlpine 2009). When sighted, both species are found in small groups (Jefferson et al. 1993) and avoid vessels (Wursig et al. 1998). They do not show their flukes when they dive (McAlpine 2009) and sometimes merely sink from the surface (Willis and Baird 1998). Their blow is seldom visible, and they often lie motionless at the surface (Leatherwood et al. 1976, McAlpine 2009). For 1 Corresponding author (e-mail: [email protected]). 32017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT

As the new Board President, it gives me great pride to present the Helping Paws Impact Report for 2016-2017 and briefly highlight the ways our volunteers, donors, sponsors, and staff go Above and Beyond in service to our amazing graduates.

During this fiscal year, we helped 14 individuals achieve greater independence and quality of life through their match with an assistance dog. In alignment with our policy to give priority to individuals applying for a successor dog, eight of nine dogs were successor dogs. One was placed as a skilled companion dog and four more were placed with veterans affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Our dedicated volunteers donated the equivalent of $3.6 million in time to Helping Paws this year. That includes 20 foster home trainers who are training their third (or more) dog! As someone who began her involvement with Helping Paws as a New Year’s resolution in 2008, trained three dogs, and served as a Caretaker Home for a litter of puppies, I can relate to how this great organization gets into your blood.

That value also includes our 59 volunteer dog sitters, who along with our Foster Home Trainers donated nearly 27,000 hours of time dog sitting so that all the dogs had a place to “vacation” when needed.

One of our major accomplishments this year was Helping Paws’ successful completion of the re-accreditation process of Assistance Dogs International (ADI). This onsite assessment certifies that we meet comprehensive standards for preparing, placing, and supporting assistance dogs and those who benefit from them. We have been accredited since 2007 and undergo an exhaustive review every five years to maintain this designation. I’m proud to report that Helping Paws was noted by ADI for a number of best practices.

We’re also fortunate to receive generous financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations. We thank all these donors and sponsors for their support. Finally, I want to recognize the staff and board whose passion for our mission is extraordinary. We are grateful for all you do.

ARIC ELSNER & MINNIE

I recently retired from military service after 25 years, 9 months & 28 days.

In April, I attended an event at Helping Paws where I met other veterans who had service dogs. I was really nervous about getting a service dog, and before attending, I thought to myself, “There are so many other people out there that are more deserving of a dog.” But I asked a ton of questions, listened to everyone’s stories and even got to work with a couple dogs that were in training.

I was matched with my service dog Minnie in July 2016. She’s had so many positive effects on me and my entire family—together, we’ve gone to baseball games, restaurants, movie theatres and shopping. Minnie loves to swim, so her favorite place so far has been spending time at the lake at my sister’s cabin.

She picks up dropped items, turns on lights, takes off my socks, and wakes me from nightmares. She watches me all the time, gives me kisses, gets me out to exercise and most of all, she keeps me grounded in the present where I look forward to living instead of hiding.

It’s believable, now, that I’ll even return to school for retraining. With Minnie at my side, anything is possible!

She’s had so many positive effects on me and my entire family—together, we’ve gone to baseball games, restaurants, movie theatres and shopping.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

72017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT

I enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1982 when I was a senior at Cloquet High School. Three weeks after I graduated I attended basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, and went on to my fist duty station in Germany with the 1st Armored Division. After fulfilling my enlistment, I attended the University of Minnesota, joined both the Reserve Officer Training Corps, and the Minnesota National Guard. I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in June of 1987, volunteered and then served in support of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I transitioned to the Army Reserve in 1995 and was promoted to Captain, but then left the Army in January of 2002. When the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began, my heart missed serving the country I loved, so I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in October of 2009. I deployed to Afghanistan with the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing and served on Kandahar Airfield in 2011. I was injured during my deployment, and left the Air Force in October of 2012. My injuries require weekly visits to the VA, and have altered my home life substantially.

I learned about Helping Paws from Atticus and his buddy, Jason Halverson. Helping Paws graciously offered me Copper as a friend. He has quickly become my buddy, and is helping me cope with the lasting after-effects of the war. I would gladly serve again, but for now, Copper is helping me heal.

In 2002, Charice Snyder was diagnosed with Erythromelalgia, a rare disorder that causes a painful burning sensation and swelling of the feet, legs, and hands and—in severe cases—the face. Much like her father who passed away from the disease, Charice suffers from the worst of the symptoms.

“It feels like your feet are on fire,” she says, “and they’re being cut open by razor blades.” Yet Charice worked serving others as a nurse, giving care even when it was difficult. She persisted until the symptoms became too severe, forcing her to leave her position in 2009. Although life with erythromelalgia is far from easy, she believes in perseverance. “You deal with it a day at a time.”

Knowing the difficulties she faced, Charice’s doctors recommended that she get a service dog to help her with day-to-day living. She refused the offer initially, worried that being in and out of an electric wheelchair would not allow her to care for a canine companion properly. However, after some contemplation, she

agreed, and now describes her service dog, Briar, as “a godsend.” The 3-year-old Golden Retriever brings a zest and energy to each day that truly brightens Charice’s life. They work through each situation as a team, and have developed a mutual love and trust has tightened their bond even further.

That bond is illustrated by the many ways Briar assists Charice, from tasks like laundry and grocery shopping to providing reassuring support when Charice walks. Charice makes a point to treat Briar just as well as Briar treats her, exclaiming, “I’d do anything for her!” Charice is often awed by Briar’s canine dedication—such as when Briar braces herself to withstand Charice’s weight to help her get up. It is this steadfast dependability that embodies their relationship.

When asked to imagine life without Briar, Charice pauses. “I don’t know how I’d get along. I never thought that Briar would be this much help to me, and this important in my life,” she says, adding, “I didn’t know how much I could love an animal.”

Jenna Kaliszewski is a Navy veteran whose military service was ended early by PTSD. She inquired about a service dog to many organizations, but became discouraged by the potentially long wait. Then Jenna was invited to attend an open house hosted by Helping Paws, and she quickly found the support and encouragement she needed to apply.

At that open house, Jenna met and worked with Jaya, with whom she felt an instant connection. According to those who were there, Jaya came out of her kennel, walked right up to Jenna, and laid her head in her lap. From the outset, Jaya was focused on Jenna—and Jenna knew she would do whatever was needed to ensure that Jaya became her service dog and companion.

PTSD had made sleep difficult for Jenna, but from the first night she brought Jaya home, she began to rest easier. And despite the fact that she sleeps with Jenna every night, Jaya still asks permission to jump up in bed, Jenna laughs. But Jaya helps Jenna during her waking moments, too. Family and friends have noted that Jenna talks less about her imperfections since having Jaya.

Prior to receiving Jaya, Jenna had signed up for a Lone Survivor retreat, a program for veterans who are challenged by PTSD and other service-related injuries, but was contemplating canceling the trip due to anxiety. With Jaya by her side, Jenna felt empowered to go—and together they traveled to Utah where Jenna successfully completed the retreat.

Mary Weinand wasn’t sure that another service dog was in the cards for her. After a long period that felt defined by personal loss after the passing of her first Helping Paws service dog, Emma, and complications with degenerative MS (multiple sclerosis), Mary didn’t feel confident that life’s pendulum would swing the other way anytime soon.

Yet friends and family continued to raise the issue: “Are you sure you don’t want to apply for another dog?” With their encouragement and the support from her network both in and outside of Helping Paws, Mary made the call in the summer of 2016 to see if there could be another dog for her. Enter Pippa—and once again, Mary’s pendulum swung towards confidence and happiness in the form of a sweet, bright-eyed Lab.

“I won the lottery twice,” Mary says of life with Pippa. As if in enthusiastic agreement, Pippa wags her tail and observes Mary intently. Mary and Pippa have been working together only since October of 2016, but from the get-go, Pippa understood that Mary is her person—watching for and after her is very clearly Pippa’s job and delight.

Already Pippa has seen Mary through several tough moments in her health journey. On one such occasion that required emergency care, Pippa never strayed from Mary’s side. The responding personnel later commented to Mary that Pippa was so well behaved and so laser-focused on Mary, nudging her as she worked through breathing complications, that they brought Pippa in the ambulance and later to Mary’s hospital room so she could maintain her vigilant watch. That kind of dedication isn’t something that’s taught to a dog: Pippa simply knew she needed to be with Mary and communicated that desire.

In their everyday routine, not only does Pippa anticipate the practical help that Mary needs—carefully opening doors to navigate through, helping to tug off shoes and socks—she enhances the joy in Mary’s life. Pippa gives Mary the confidence to go out to dinner on her own or go for a walk. And Pippa is a constant bright spot among Mary’s neighbors and friends. Simply put, Pippa fills to overflowing what was once a poignant emptiness in Mary’s life. Or as Mary says, “She’s my happiness that stuck around.”

It has been my honor and privilege to serve my country and work with other veterans for over 20 years.

Veterans are a group of people who look to serve, not receive, and for that very reason, it’s been a challenge to receive the amazing gift of my service dog, Abbott, from Helping Paws.

Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress and other invisible wounds have experienced the effects of combat and trauma. Many are left to live with the consequences of their service and sacrifice for our nation’s freedom. I am truly grateful to have been introduced to Helping Paws by one of its humble heroes, veteran Harry Hurley.

My life has been transformed by the constant companionship I receive from Abbott, and my quality of life continues to improve.

I’d like to thank this wonderful organization for Abbott.

TYLER OLSON & BROGAN

For Tyler Olson, the loss of his first service dog, Charlie, was devastating. “It hurt so much. I was depressed. I had lost my best friend, and I never wanted to feel that pain again,” Tyler says.

Tyler and Charlie were matched when Tyler was just 17, about a year after he sustained a spinal cord injury during his junior year of high school. “We had six wonderful years together,” Tyler states, adding, “We were connected. We grew to trust each other and we both needed each other.”

Tyler goes on to explain that of course the things that Charlie did for him were great; retrieving, opening doors, and turning on lights relieved his family and friends from having to help with those things. But it was what Charlie did to his heart that truly changed Tyler’s life.

“I never knew the depth of love and connection that you could have with a dog,” Tyler reflects. After losing Charlie, Tyler couldn’t think about getting another dog. But ultimately he realized that the love and connection he had cherished with Charlie could happen again. “You have to think of all the joy and benefit they bring you. It outweighs the pain in the end.”

Tyler applied for another service dog and was matched with Brogan after being without a dog for about nine months. “Brogan and I clicked right away and became very attached, very quickly,” Tyler says.

While every dog is unique and Brogan’s personality is different from Charlie’s, Tyler’s love for Brogan is perhaps more encompassing. “After being without a dog for a while, I realize how good I had it with Charlie, which makes me appreciate Brogan even more,” says Tyler. “I work hard every day to make Brogan as happy as possible. Doing that makes me happy, too!”

“I also want to say how much I appreciate Helping Paws and all the volunteers that make these dogs possible,” he adds. “Those of us with the dogs get all the attention, but it is the people behind the scenes that should be praised and recognized. The recipients just win the lottery. We really haven’t done anything to deserve these amazing animals.”

Brogan and I clicked right away and became very attached, very quickly.

132017 HELPING PAWS IMPACT REPORT

My first Helping Paws dog was Maddy, a black Labrador Retriever. As Maddy aged, she began having issues with anxiety and arthritis, and she couldn’t do many of the tasks she once could. I thought about the idea of a successor dog, but I didn’t believe Maddy could be replaced.

When I met Audi, it finally felt right. On the same day we were pre-matched, Maddy began having seizures and we knew the end was near. It was as if she knew I would be taken care of, and it was okay for her to go. It was a hard time emotionally, and I had a lot of reservations. I even considered not going through training with Audi.

Maddy’s passing, quite frankly, broke me. I lost my purpose for a while. Audi got me through that.

In only two weeks, Audi was comfortable living with me and responding to requests without question. With Maddy, it took lots of time (and food!) to earn her trust and loyalty. I’ve learned that Golden Retrievers are much quicker to say: “What can I do? When? How much? I’m here!”

I realized I’d adapted so much to Maddy’s decline that I had forgotten what a dog was able to do for me. I had become more reliant on people for help, which was exhausting for me. I cherish my time alone; it is how I ground myself and recharge.

Audi has renewed me by giving me a break from needing others with me 24/7. Audi has given me INDEPENDENCE.
