The 2012 theme of OKFestival is Open Knowledge in Action, looking at the value that can be generated by opening up knowledge, the ecosystems of organisations that can benefit from this, and the impacts that transparency can have in our societies. This year’s schedule is diverse, with over 13 guest-planned Topic Streams from “Transparency and Account-ability” to “Open Knowledge and Sustainability”. Please ref-

erence the summary for each Topic Stream to find out more about how they have been or-ganised, who is involved and the programming that has been planned. We encourage OKFestival participants to try out sessions from all 13 Topic Streams to experience the full diversity of the festival week and to help build new forms of collaboration that promote openness in new ways!

The INSPIRE Foyer is your gathering place...a large public space to arrive and have a coffee in the morning before sessions (speaker reception between 9–10 am) and to hang out with old friends and new contacts throughout the day. You are also welcome to check out the OKFest Library and OKFest Shop – and be sure to stop and support those speaking in our interactive programme of lightning talks and other foyer events. The INSPIRE Auditorium is for festival features...where you can watch morning plenaries each day and get inspired by our keynote speakers, who will also be live-streamed outside in the INSPIRE Foyer. During the day, the INSPIRE Meeting Room features a diverse range of presentations from many different Topic Streams – watch this space!

The venue spaces across Aalto University for OK-Festival 2012 have been divided to 4 different catego-ries, each with different contextual and social func-tions. From hackathons in HACK to hardware sessions in MAKE, from keynotes in INSPIRE to workshops in MEET, these spaces have been built to promote new connections and linkages across spectrums. We hope you will get the chance to try each space out during the week to explore different types of participation.

The MAKE rooms are special... as the Open Cultural Heritage hackathon takes place in MAKE on Tuesday 18 Sept. The rest of the week is dedicated to those participating in the Open Design, Hardware, Manufacturing and Making Topic Stream, which features a series of interactive workshops, lectures and seminars highlighting making in all its forms, all focused around the rooms of Finland’s first FabLab at Aalto Media Factory, the Aalto FabLab.

The MEET rooms are for discussion...and throughout the venue offer most of our full-day conference sessions, as well as many other smaller discussions, informal gatherings and meetings between participants.

Open Democracy and Citizen Movements

The Open Democracy and Citizen Movements stream explores the recent moves towards more open and participatory democracies within societies. Online tools now allow people to speak, be heard, find each other and take collective action in new ways. This stream will showcase and debate these ideas, starting with an exploration of new democratic initiatives and formalised understandings such as the crowdsourced Icelandic constitutional reform, participatory budgeting and European citizens’ initiatives. The theme carries on to to the informal, non-mandated citizen movements that are shaping our societies from the bottom up.

Transparency and Accountability

Transparency is important – but it’s only valuable in the context that people can find and use information to ensure that the behaviour of those in power, or those watching power, changes for the better of the public. This stream will look at issues of transparency around data, emerging ways to build on open data, and the related issues and uncertainties around privacy, sustainability and corporate data. There will also be a day focused on the state-of-play of existing Open Government Data movements and related initiatives, as well as the Open Government Partnership (OGP), with an emphasis on the perspectives of civil society members. Through our sessions, we aim to help the OGP achieve its stated goals for the community while overcoming what may prevent those goals from being realised.

Open Cities

Open Cities will explore cities both as systems and as active communities of citizens. Topic stream takes a look at the existing structures and practices that construct the cities of today. How should future smart city infrastructures be designed and built to support openness in its various forms?

More effective usage of public sector data and engagement of new

generation of problem solvers, such as developers, in the public service production can now be seen as evident elements in the process of shifting to open cities. Collaboration between open cities: willingness to share what we know and the readiness to implement innovations envisioned elsewhere, are steps towards open cities of tomorrow. Concurrently urban surveillance and data collecting set new opportunities and challenges on the way. Open Cities stream

contemplates on the new roles and tools openness calls for the cities, companies, developers and dwellers. What role do digital networks and technologies play?

Open Cities program will consist of keynote presentations and discussions involving researchers, city officers and active citizens. Stream brings together inspiring examples from organizations such as World Bank and European Network of Living Labs as well as cities of Helsinki and Barcelona.

For OKFestival 2012, we took a risk and opened up the entire programme to festival participants, asking what topics were most important to your own under-standings of openness – and the results have been astounding. Over 100 Guest Programme Planners col-laborated from across the globe to build the schedule for 13 different Topic Streams. We are proud to high-light such a diverse, community-focused programme – the first of its kind in the world. Here is a summary of each Topic Stream, written by Guest Programme Planners themselves.

Open Design, Hardware, Manufacturing and Making

This stream covers Open Design in all its various facets (from design as a blueprint to design as process to design as an artefact) and applications (product design, graphic design, fashion design, service design, interior design, architecture, hardware, etc). Topics such as Open Hardware, Open Fabrication and Manufacturing, and Making in general are also covered. The stream will showcase contemporary research and practice in this emerging field and address some of the greatest challenges in the area.

Programming will include keynotes, presentations, panels and discussion, practical hands-on activities and topic-focused workshops, and an exhibition about open design and hardware.

Open Cultural Heritage

The Open Cultural Heritage stream at OKFestival has the goal of taking the discussion about making cultural data available for anyone to re-use to the next level. During OKFestival, experts from around the world will come together to share experiences, lessons learned and find out what next steps need to be taken to achieve our common goals, or even set new ones. These experiences will also be shared with the representatives from cultural heritage institutions during a hands on workshop. We will help them actively with opening up their data by addressing the different barriers and also give them the opportunity to share their experiences with the people working in the sector. Finally, there will be a full cultural hackday dedicated to working with, and building, new things using open cultural and scientific data in cooperation with a number of cultural heritage institutions to show the potential of Open Cultural Data for developers.

Open Development

Open Knowledge – from open educational resources to open hardware and open data – can play a powerful role in supporting sustainable global development. The Open Development stream is about exploring how the OKFest community can engage with key development challenges, from addressing chronic poverty, to providing access to education and healthcare and addressing climate change and natural resource management.

It is also about bringing voices from development actors into the heart of the Open Knowledge debate, supporting two-way learning about making open data and open knowledge work for development.

Gender and Diversity in Openness

This topic stream features a set of hands-on sessions focused on promoting discussion and inspiring action, showcasing both challenges and solutions regarding the role of gender, diversity and accessibility within open data and Open Source movements. Programming includes “Gender, Hardware and Open Fabrication” (with the Open Design/Hardware/Making topic stream), an introductory RailsGirls workshop for those new to code, a “10 Women in 10 Minutes” edit-a-thon with the Wikimedia Foundation, “Exclusive Diversity? A Conversation” with TechSoup Global and NetSquared, and lightning talks under the theme of “TAKE ACTION: Projects Around the World that Address the Tech Gender Gap”. Participants of all gender and cultural identifications are welcome!

Business and Open Data

This topic stream is focused on how to support existing business practices within the field of Open Data. It includes a day of ‘Open Data in Business Research’ sessions as well as a business practitioner session which highlights the good cases of using and providing open data in business. The research sessions are co-ordinated with Aalto University School of Economics and the business practicioner session is run by Sitra the Finnish Innovation Fund and IBM Finland. The topic stream brings business minds and academic minds together to discuss how to build sustainable business using open data.

Data Journalism and Data Visualization

The Data Journalism and Data visualization stream combines two closely-related disciplines for hands-on practical sessions, discussions, demonstrations and debates. The stream will kick off on Monday with two satellite events, “visualizing Knowledge” and “Hacks/Hackers Helsinki”. During the festival itself, join us to learn how to make data pretty, with tools demos and a session on using APIs for journalists. Join the debates on how to bring data journalism to the newsroom and make open data mainstream, and on how to use it to track powerful influence groups in the media. Our week ends with a hackday co-organized with Helsingin Sanomat, pioneers of combining Open Data and journalism in Finland. Whether you are a hack, a hacker or an interested bystander, we’ll make you into a data journalist – join us!

Open Knowledge and Sustainability

Sustainability is the main challenge of our time. Society needs to adapt and change to avoid environmental collapse and to guarantee the well-being of the current and future generations. We believe that open knowledge can be key in helping this transformation.

Therefore openness and building up our knowledge commons should be an integral part of sustainability thinking. In this stream we want to explore current contributions of Open Knowledge with sustainability, with the purpose of discussing and building innovative ideas to showcase this potential.

Open Geodata

The Open Geodata stream aims to facilitate new collaborations and connections between the already strong geo-information community (GIS) and the Open Data movement. Much of the programme will therefore be organized in collaboration with other streams.

Topic Streams

Open Research and Education

Openness is very much in action in the generation of (and dispersal of) knowledge. The Open Research and Education stream will offer talks, debates and hands-on workshops geared particularly towards educational specialists, researchers and scientists. Open Education sessions will explore the value of open technologies, open resources, and collaborative peer learning through a series of interactive and innovative workshops, including pecha kucha and fishbowl techniques. Open Science topics include Open Source Drug Discovery, Open Access in Practice and Communicating Science, alongside opportunities for discussion with the European Commission and the Open Knowledge Foundation’s Panton Fellows. The Open Data research session will focus on the impact of Open Data research within the academic environment. This session will bring together the latest research concerning Open Data and Open Government Data, forming a interdisciplinary mix of short presentations followed by a discussion panel.

Open Source Software

This stream covers various topics related to Open Source Software, including open procurement, best open source practices and fresh showcases where open source has made a difference. We will hear about the importance of software freedom and discuss the threats to openness and general purpose computing that we are currently facing. We also have a session dedicated to the potential future of mobile technologies – what role can Open Source Software play in these new developments? Programming is organised by COSS (the Finnish Centre for Open Systems and Solutions).
