The Pastor’s Letter

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In just a few weeks we will enter the month of November, which is the final month of our liturgical year and is the month devoted to the Saints and the Holy Souls in Purgatory. All Saint's Day is Monday, November 1. In addition to the usual 6:30am and 9:00am Mass there will be an additional evening Mass. Tuesday, November 2 is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, or All Souls Day. It also marks the beginning of our parish All Souls Novena. Each day for nine days we will offer Holy Mass for the repose of the souls of

our deceased loved ones. To enroll someone in the Novena, simply list their names on the provided envelopes (in your mailed packet, in the rectory, or at the doors of the church) and return the envelope to the office or place in the collection basket. Multiple names can be placed on the same envelope. Our parish Mass of Remembrance will be on Saturday, November 6 at 9am. At this Mass we especially pray for and remember those in our parish who have died over the past year. If you have a loved one who is a parishioner and has died over the past year and you have not received a mailing from the parish, please contact the office as soon as possible to be included. A highlight of November is always the national celebration of Thanksgiving Day. Please plan to begin your day with your parish family at our 9am Mass before gathering with your families later in the day. Please watch out for announcements from parish ministries and groups as they begin to meet again. The Men's Group met again for the first time in months this past Thursday. Fr. Jiha is also looking to host a Bible Study group on the Wednesdays of Advent.

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou O Prince of the heaven-ly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. The Requirements of Sponsor for Baptism & Confirmation The role of sponsor is an important one for the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. The Church sees the sponsor as a fully-initiated Catholic who supports the one receiving the sacrament with example and instruction. Because of the seriousness of this ministry, the Church has the following requirements: • The sponsor must be a fully-initiated member of the Catholic Church through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The sponsor must be at least sixteen (16) years of age. o In this case, the Catholic who is younger than 16 must be fully initiated.

• The sponsor must have an active life of faith in the Church and provide good example. o Someone married outside the Church is not able to receive Communion and is

not able to be a sponsor. o Also, a Catholic who has left the Church is not able to be a sponsor of a new

member into the Church. o Therefore, a Catholic who has left the Catholic Church cannot be a sponsor, and

cannot be a "Christian witness" if they join another Christian communion. • The sponsor cannot be either parent. • When there are two sponsors, they are “spiritual parents” and are to be a godfather and godmother. Christian Witness – (A baptized non-Catholic Christian) Provided there is one Catholic sponsor, a baptized non-Catholic Christian may serve as a Christian witness for Baptism only. This person is a Christian witness and not a sponsor. Requirements to be a Christian Witness: o at least sixteen years old

o a validly baptized Christian

o living an upright life

o cannot be either parent

o cannot be a Catholic who has left the Church

• A Christian witness may never be a non-baptized person. For example, Jewish or Muslim godparents are not permitted by universal church law. • The notation "Christian witness" is placed under the name of the non-Catholic Christian witness in the baptismal register.

PROJECT RACHEL Project Rachel is a network of specially trained, compassionate caregivers, who are prepared to assist those who suffer from abortion loss. A MESSAGE FROM ST. JOHN PAUL 11 "I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision, and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet be healed. Cer-tainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and His peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. With the friendly and ex-pert help and advice of other people, and as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone's right to life. Through your commitment to life, whether by accepting the birth of other children or by welcoming and caring for those most in need of someone to be close to them, you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life." The practice of decorating jack-o'-lanterns originated in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes served as early canvasses. In fact, the name, jack-o'-lantern, comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack! Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, home of the pumpkin, and it became an integral part of Halloween festivities. Remember: COVID is still an issue. When welcoming those little trick-or-treaters, place a tray or bowl outside the door so they can safely fill their bags with fully wrapped candy or treats. HAPPY HALLOWEEN
