    OnThursday10th

    theirbagsandheadeduptotheYouthVillageforwhathas

    beenoneofourbestandmostpoignantretreatswehave

    everhadatEnglishMartyrs.ThethemewasTapestry

    andwelookedathowGodweavesintoandbecomes

    presentinourlives.Thestudentswereencouragedtonot

    focusonthepainsofthepastorthestressesofthefuture

    but

    to

    live

    in

    the

    present

    moment.

    We

    discovered

    the

    beautyandtheblessingsthatareonoffertouseveryday

    butbecausesometimeswedonttaketimetostopand

    reflect,wemissthem.Itwasaperfectmessageforour

    sixthformstudentswhoareataveryimportantstagein

    theirlife.Thosewhocameappreciatedthetimeawayand

    willhavesomememoriesthatwillstickwiththemforever!

    TheEMSSportsStarshasgotofftoaflyingstartinOctoberwith26ofourpromisingyoungsportsstarsalreadysubmitting

    successfulapplications.Thetalentedyoungathleteshavealreadybeguntoshowpromiseduringthevigorousinitialfitness

    testingprocessandwewillhopetodeveloptheircomponentsoffitnessevenfurtherthroughoutthecourseofthe

    programme.Inordertomaximisetheathletespotentialtheywillbereceiving:IndividualisedPersonalExercisePlans,

    nutritionaladvicebasedonthedemandsoftheirsport,seminarsonsportpsychologytechniquessuchas:Imagery,

    RelaxationTechniquesandGoalSettingandadvancedweeklyteamfitnesssessions(pre&postschool)lookingspecificallyat

    strengthandconditioningactivities.Thebenefitofthisinterventionwillbemeasuredwithregularfitnesstestinginorderto

    quantifytheirimprovements.

    Mr

    JSpence

    who

    started

    his

    career

    working

    as

    the

    strength

    and

    conditioning

    coachatNewcastleFCAcademy.Followingthis,hewasthefirstandonlystudenttobeacceptedtoworkaspartofthe

    strengthandconditioningteamfortheOlympic2012theBritishCyclingTeam.Duringthisplacement,heworkedwithelite

    athletessuchasSirChrisHoyandVictoriaPendletonhelpingtodevelopthemphysicallythroughtheirtraining.

    JesusChristSuperstar,whichwillrunfromMonday25th

    toThursday28th

    November.This

    appropriatelymarkstheendoftheYearofFaith.Castingtookplaceinthefirstweekoftermand,as

    always,competitionwasveryhigh.Over100studentsexpressedaninterestinperformingonstage

    orplayingintheBand.Approximately60studentsfromYear7 toYear13werechosenand

    rehearsalshavebeenunderwaythreenightsaweektolearnthesongsandchoreographyforthis

    demandingshow. Itpromisestobeoneofthebestyet.

    Ticketswillbepricedat7.00and4.00forconcessionsandwillbeavailablefromtheschooloffice

    afterhalfterm.

    WetookteamsofboysandgirlsfromYears7

    10totheEnglishSchoolsCrossCountryCup.

    WeweretheonlyschoolfromHartlepoolat

    theeventandcompetedagainst10other

    schoolsfromtheTeesValley.Ourteams

    performedwellwiththeYear7/8boys,

    finishinginfirstplace.Theywillnowgoonto

    theregionalroundinNovember.

    NationalSchoolsNetball

    CongratulationstotheU14andU16NetballteamswhohaveprogressedtotheRegionalroundoftheNationalSchools

    Netballtournament.Bothteamsplayedreallywellanddidtheschoolproud.Teamsneededtofinishinthetoptwoto

    qualify,andtheU14sfoughthardcomingsecondinaverywellattendedagegroup.TheU16squalifiedinfirstplaceand

    havethereforebeencrownedcountychampions.

    MusicisvaluedveryhighlyatEnglishMartyrsandweenjoyarichtraditionofmusicmaking.Thereareopportunitiesto

    learnamusicalinstrumenthereatEnglishMartyrs.Wecurrentlyhavevacanciesforwoodwindincludingsaxophone,

    brass,guitaranddrums.MusicExamscanbeanexcellentadditiontoaC.VandareworthUCASpointstoo.

    Hexham&NewcastleCatholicPartnershipDesignTechnologyShow

    OnTuesday15th

    OctobertheTechnologyDepartmenttookexamplesofworkproducedbystudentsinallareasofDesign

    TechnologytotheNationalGlassCentreinSunderlandandcreatedaninnovativedisplayofthework.Thedisplayformed

    partofanexhibitionofworkproducedbystudentsintwelveoftheschoolsintheHexham&NewcastleCatholicPartnership.

    Agroup ofstudentsattendedtheeventtoshowcasetheirwork,manyotherofourstudentswhoseworkwasbeing

    exhibitedcameuptotheGlassCentrewithparentsandgrandparenttohavealookaroundandshowofftheirtremendous

    achievements.

    OurALevelworkwasarealstrengthasproductsweredisplayedfromallthreetechnologysubjectsoffered.Designstaff

    fromtheUniversityofSunderlandcommentedontheexcellentqualityofourSixthFormwork.Theevening startedwitha

    coupleoftalks,thenpeoplewereinvitedtolookaroundtheexhibition,manypeoplecommentedonthequalityandcreativityoftheworkproducedbyEnglishMartyrsstudentsandtookthetimetotalktostaffandstudentsabouttheirwork.

    Duringtheeveningpeoplewereinvitedtoattendoneoftwoglassblowingdemonstrations.ConnieSullivan(Year11)hada

    tryatglassblowingherselfandsaidthatitwasamazing!

    Itwasanextremelywellattended,excitingeveningandthequalityanddiversityoftheworkwasbreathtaking.

    ever,theyarethenconfrontedwiththegreedoftheirevil

    landlord.Thestudentsthoroughlyenjoyedtheplaywhich

    coveredthemesofresilience,generosityandovercominggreed.

    Thisyearisnoexceptionandwewillhavetheusualeventstakingplacesuchasatombola,hotdogstall,cakestall,

    legwaxing,NintendoWiigamesandastaffcoffeemorning.Anytombolaorrafflegiftswouldbegreatlyappreciated

    andhelpustokeepraisingsuchamazingamountsofmoney.AnygiftscanbebroughttoMrsLTumiltyinher

    classroomC1.

    Lastyearweintroducedastaff/studentfunrunaroundSummerhillandthestudentsinvolvedraisedanincredible

    1600ofourfinaltotal.Weareholdingthefunrunagainthisyearandapproximately100studentsaretakingpart

    onThursdayOctober24th.Iwishallstudentstakingpartgoodluckandhopetoseesomeinterestingfancydressas

    partofthefunrun.GoodLuckeveryone!

    Theweekwasawonderfulexperienceforallandtheoutcomesofallofthisworkwillbeusedtofurtheradvance

    courseworkthisyearfortheirGCSEandBTECcourses.

    OnMondayevening(Oct21st)wewillhaveourannualexhibitioneventintheartgalleryandthevastmajorityofthe

    studentswillcomewiththeirfamiliesandviewtheworkondisplay.Itwillbeagreateveninganditisalwaysapleasureto

    seethesmilesonthestudentsandthelookoftheirveryproudparents.
