A HAVDALLAH TO LAST ALL YEAR THROUGH

I am writing this article during Chol Hamo’ed, the working days of the holiday of Sukkot, as we prepare for the

joyous culmination of this intense two month High Holiday period - Simchat Torah.

The dilemma we soon face is – everyone is on a spiritual “high” from the wonderful services and programs

we’ve just enjoyed; how do we sustain that spiritual intensity longer? This is akin to Havdallah which we recite at the

end of every Shabbat and Holiday. Havdallah not only differentiates between the spiritual heights of the Shabbat/Holiday

relative to the mundane work week; it also helps retain some of that special feeling, to assist us through the week. I’m

looking for a Havdallah designed to sustain the “high” of the High Holidays all year long, or at least a little longer…

It is perhaps intentional that our Jewish calendar gives us a “break” in Cheshvan, which is the only month that

has nothing “special” in it. In fact that spiritual “lull” lasts all the way till Chanukah which is a full two months after

Tishrei’s last holiday of Simchat Torah. It is therefore only natural for us to revert back to our regular routines, the

everyday concerns that preoccupy us, leaving little room/time for spiritual pursuits that preoccupy many during Tishrei.

I may have found a possible solution: in the few days right after Yom Kippur, during Sukkot, Men’s Club and

Sisterhood hosted two back to back outstanding opening events, attended (between the two) by some 200 participants. It

(almost) felt like Rosh Hashanah again with our building bustling with exciting activity and many diverse attendees. The

Men’s Club’s “Red, White, and Blues” included Havdallah in the beautiful sukkah erected by Jim Cihak and Men’s

Club, wine tasting (with superior Israeli wine from the Golan), hors d’oeuvres by Jeff Sherman, and live music, in the

social hall elegantly decorated by Jeannette Bernstein.

The next morning Sisterhood’s outstanding program included a delicious brunch (again Jeff Sherman) followed

by a heartwarming presentation from the 17 Confirmation Israel Trip participants in front of a packed sanctuary.

Programs like these, of which many are being planned throughout the year, can and should motivate

congregants to enter the doors of B’nai Israel all year, besides attending the wonderful Shabbat, holiday and daily

services we always provide. If you do, then we may just have found the “Havdallah” formula that will sustain the “high”

of the High Holidays throughout the year until we all meet again in health and joy next Rosh Hashanah on Thursday,

September 25, 2014.

It has been a great start to the new year at CBI. Many congregants have commented on how beautiful our High

Holiday services were this year. Our inspiring Hazzan and guest Rabbi, Jason Miller, as well as all the volunteers in-

volved in the services allowed the season to be meaningful for all of us. One especially nice aspect was the Kol Nidre

service with all 13 of our Sifrei Torah on display.

5774 continued with beautiful Sukkot services, a wonderful Men’s Club wine tasting event and a very well at-

tended opening Sisterhood brunch. The calendar is full of events for all to participate in.

The executive committee and rabbi search committee will reconvene shortly to assess our future rabbinical

needs. Anyone from the congregation is welcome to provide comments and input in this process.

Initial discussions have taken place between the cemetery committees of B’nai Israel and Etz Chayim with the

objective of insuring our cemetery is adequately funded to provide maintenance and upkeep in the future. There is not

an immediate issue however, a long term funding plan will be necessary.

Finally, I would like to thank those who have generously participated in this year’s Kol Nidre appeal. We had a

very successful start and our $50,000 goal is within reach.

Religious School is off to a great start! We have added a new class for two year olds that will meet

twice a month. All of our students had numerous activities the first month to keep them busy, especially

with all of the holidays. We were honored to hear the experiences of a lifetime that our students had on

their confirmation trip to Israel this past summer which they recently shared at the Sisterhood opening

brunch. Our eighth-tenth graders, along with our friends from Shomer Emunim, volunteered at the Race

for the Cure. The Toledo Zoo van will be visiting our younger students in a joint program with Shomer

Emunim on Oct 13. We are working on many collaborative programs, such as skype pals and book

sharing with our friends in the Partnership region of the Jewish Federation throughout the school year.

Why are we so often surprised when underdogs win? Do Goliaths make mistakes in spite of their strength – or because of it? Why are the child-hoods of people at the top of so many professions marked by deprivation?

Malcolm Gladwell, uncovers the hidden rules that shape the balance between the weak and the mighty.

Malcolm Gladwell has been a staff writer with The New Yorker magazine since 1996. He is the author of several books including, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference, (2000), Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005), and Outliers: The Story of Success (2008).Registration requested by Monday, September 23.

Go inside the West Wing with two men who gave voice to Amer-ica’s last two presidents - Robert

Gibbs and Ari Fleischer, the first White House press secretaries for President Obama and President George W. Bush. A lively night of sto-ries and candid reflection about the nation’s leadership, moderated by former chief White House correspon-dent Ben Feller, who covered both presidents for The Associated Press.Registration requested by Monday, October 14.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, through the generosity of Ruth and Ralph Delman, is proud to present some of the 92nd Street Y’s highly regarded lecture series, made available via live simulcast to Jewish institutions all over the world. This program, open to the entire Jewish community, is a cooperative effort of Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, JFGT Department of Jewish Programs and Temple Shomer Emunim. Special thanks to Grand Lubell Photography.

Monday, November 4Alan Dershowitz and Jeffrey Toobin7 pm – reception (live satellite broadcast: 8 p.m.)Temple Shomer Emunim 6453 Sylvania Ave.

You know that Alan Dershowitz, the preeminent defense lawyer in America today, has had an im-pact on the lives of storied clients like O. J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow, Bill Clinton, Julian Assange, Jef-frey MacDonald, Patty Hearst, Mike Tyson, and many more.

But who has affected Der-showitz himself? The attorney and author is now Taking the Stand in a new memoir and on 92Y’s stage. Jeffrey Toobin, author (The Oath: The Obama White House and

the Supreme Court), New Yorker writer and CNN analyst, interviews Dershowitz. Thane Rosenbaum, the John Whelan Distinguished Lecturer in Law at Fordham Law School, director the Forum on

Law, Culture & Society, will moderate.

Professor Alan M. Der-showitz is a Brooklyn na-tive who has been called “the nation’s most peri-patetic civil liberties law-yer” and one of its “most distinguished defenders of individual rights,” “the best-known criminal law-

yer in the world,” “the top lawyer of last resort,” “America’s most pub-lic Jewish defender” and “Israel’s single most visible defender – the Jewish state’s lead attorney in the court of public opinion.” Registration requested by Monday, October 28.
