This month’s cover photo contest winner: Michelle Lorenzen

S eptember, for me, means starting to think about the holidays and gearing up for

four months of fun and activities. Let’s concentrate on September though and remember some VERY important dates that should be on your calendar. September 5th is Cheese Pizza Day (I’m sure all the local pizza places will appreciate us for this), September 9th is Teddy Bear Day, September 13th is Positive Thinking Day (if you are not doing this everyday, you should), September 14th is National Cream Filled Donut Day (yes!), September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day and September 30th is National Mud Pack Day (hmmm). Many others as well. On a serious note, do take a moment on September 11th and on September 21st (National Peace Day). During these months, I will continue to work hard to produce

an excellent newsletter for you. Though I can do the job of putting a great product together, it is you that makes it worth reading. All the residents, governing entities, clubs, schools, organizations, charities and businesses  who contribute to this newsletter are who make the difference. I thank you for your support and will continue to support you. Any new ideas or thoughts are always welcome. Remember, send in your photos, stories, announcements and events. The cover winner for this issue is Michelle Lorenzen. Congratulations!

member-ship news The 25th Anniversary Club Reinvention Membership Program is underway.

It is the perfect opportunity to strengthen our Club!  Our goal is to grow our golf membership back to 470 golf members. 470 members is the peak member count of the Club’s Golf Membership over the last 25 years. If we achieve that number again, ClubCorp has committed to additional capital funding above and beyond our normal allotment for two specific projects. This additional investment will benefit all Members and give us the opportunity to begin the next 25 years with a fresh new dining concept and an improved golf experience. The Projects:The completion of the course cart path reconstruction and the enhancement of the on-course amenities.  To date we have spent more than $170,000 on repaving 7 paths and the driving range area. This project will allow us to pave the remaining 11 holes as well as the service road and facilities maintenance area. I have heard from many Members that the quality of the paths has been a major detractor from our property. With your help we can correct the problem and raise our golf experience to a new level.  In addition, we will also upgrade the course restrooms and tee box area amenities. Lobby and Club Dining “Reinvention.”  This would include: (1) an Entrance and Lobby facelift, with new furniture and carpeting; (2) expand and enlarge the Lakeview Grill to add a large casual seating anytime lounge area; (3) improving the look and layout of the Bar with a new design, refrigeration, bar top and barstools, new tables and chairs including

high top cocktail seating and community tables, new carpeting; and (4) exterior furniture. If YOu sponsor a new golf member YOu receive:Social, Tennis & Athletic Members receive credit equivalent to your first months dues plus $25 off your monthly dues for up to 25 months. · Golf Society (age 42 – 59)Initiation Fee: $4,000 $250Monthly Dues: $413  $320Add Cross Bay privileges for only $40 more · Golf Society (age 60 plus)Initiation fee: $4,000 $250Monthly dues: $413 $267Add Cross Bay privileges for only $40 more · Young Executive Cross Bay (age 18 - 41)Initiation Fee: $4,000 $250Monthly Dues: $280  $222 Current social, athletic or tennis members may upgrade to Cross Bay for a $100 upgrade fee.  Start saving 25 % on your Food & Beverage, receive 24 golf guest passes, 10 % on your cart fees plus much much more! YouthProgramsKarate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of  building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club.  We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

A Pedometer is the Key to Fitness and Weight LossBy Kelli Calabrese MS, CSCS, ACE2004 Personal Trainer of the Year - Online Training Pedometers are your best-kept secret to making exercising easier, improving your health and having fun in the process. They help to streamline your walking routine and move you closer to your physical goals, one step at a time. Walking is one of the simplest, most cost-effective, and enjoyable forms of activity. Clipping on a pedometer helps to take out all of the guesswork and lets you see your accomplishments before your eyes. how long will it be before you begin to see results? The answer:

Festival Celebrates Hispanic Culture

Saturday, Sept. 15, Noon - 5 p.m. at Centennial

Park in Ybor City

Tampa hispanic heritage, Inc. is celebrating their 33rd anniversary and will

kick-off festivities for hispanic heritage month at Festival del SABOR - a family oriented event that celebrates the SABOR (or flavor) of Tampa’s hispanic culture, food, music and arts. The expo will feature businesses from the Bay area including restaurants,

Latin cafeterias, bakeries, markets, grocery stores, beverage vendors, arts and crafts, and much more.

The most popular feature of the festival once again will be the Latin recipe contest and cook-off to find Tampa Bay’s Best “Arroz con Pollo.”  Amateur cooks are encouraged to participate in order to win up to $750 in prizes.  Prizes will be awarded for Best recipe and Most Creative Recipe.

We will also have the hispanic heritage Cultural Ambassor Contest.  Overall, this festival is a celebration for the entire community not just the hispanic community. The children’s area will be sponsored again by MOSI (Museum of Science and Industries).  The stage is set to provide local talent an opportunity to perform as in the case of Danny Lozada and Kike Barrios. Record number attendance will make it one of the most celebrated events in Tampa this year.

Pasco Coastal Cleanup - September 15thPasco County joins hundreds of thousands of people around the world for “Trash Free Seas” this September during the 27th annual International Coastal Cleanup. This is the world’s largest volunteer effort to help protect our ocean, lakes and rivers. Each year, hundreds of thousands

of volunteers from around the world spend a few hours removing trash and debris from beaches, lakes, and rivers and inland areas keeping track of every piece of trash they find. Ocean Conservancy uses that information to produce an annual country-by-country, state-by-state index of the problem of marine debris.  In the past 26 years, more than 9 million volunteers have removed 153 million pounds of trash from more than 312,000 miles of coastline and waterways in 153 countries and locations. Saturday, September 15th from 8 am to 12 pm  there is a team near you. There are seventeen (17) teams around the County. Sign up at www.keeppascobeautiful.org and receive a list of team captains. Contact the captain in the area of your choice. Last year in Pasco, 1283 volunteers picked up 23,840 pounds (11.92 tons) of trash.

almost immediately! You will first notice a difference in your energy followed by improvements in your fitness level, performance, fat loss and muscular endurance. A pedometer gives you specific feedback on your progress and inspires you to go a little longer or make better time in the same distance. Glancing down at your pedometer is assurance that you are doing your body a world of good. When clipped onto your belt, the pedometer (which is smaller than a pager) can be just the inspiration you need to get you moving from sedentary to fabulously fit. Put it on when you get out of bed in the morning to see how many steps you take all day. Gradually build your way up to a goal of 10,000 steps a day, which is predicted to be the amount necessary for heart health. Do periodic step checks throughout the day to make sure you are achieving your goal. This way you will not be left with a majority of the steps to do at night. You can set goals to increase your steps by 5 percent increments every day until you reach 10,000. Don’t worry if it takes you a month or a year or more. Start slowly and incorporate some of the following tips for using a pedometer to build up to 10,000 steps a day: Any time you are waiting, get moving. For example, take a walk while waiting to pick the kids up from practice, waiting for your car to be serviced or waiting for a plane. Do all of your Saturday errands on foot. For example, park your car on one side of town and walk to the bank, post office, card store, video store and so on. Make it a family affair. Share quality time taking an evening walk rather than sitting at the table eating seconds or lying on the couch. Push the baby in a stroller or walk alongside the kids on their bikes. Keep a journal. Note your total miles each day. Record how you felt after exercising as well as your goals for the next day. Some sophisticated

pedometers can download all of your data. have rewards ready. For example, when you reach 5,000 steps, buy a new CD to listen to while you walk. When you reach 7,500 steps, treat yourself to a massage. GET MOVING… · Park your car at the end of the lot or in the next lot over.· Take the scenic route by foot to your office or when traveling.· use the stairs instead of the elevator.· On long drives, stop every hour and walk around for 15 minutes.· Meet friends for a walk rather than lunch.· Make walking fun by listening to your favorite music.· use the push mower instead of the riding mower.· Join a walking club.· Sign up for a walk-a-thon and begin training today.· Volunteer to train a guide dog for the blind or handicapped. There are enjoyable places to walk everywhere you look including golf courses, parks, rail trails, city streets, beaches, college campuses and so on. All you need to get started are some supportive sneakers, loose fitting clothing, a bottle of water and your pedometer.

Reward YourselfBy Joanna van der Laan

People tend to be hard on themselves when they fail to accomplish a goal, but also when they DO accomplish a goal. When was the last time you took a moment to reward yourself? Whenever you reach a milestone, have something special in mind, like a massage, new shoes or clothes, or a great day planned with a friend. Remember that food rewards can be great, as long as they don’t sabotage your weight loss and fitness goals.

Preparing your home for allergy season is something that should

not be overlooked when summer is here. Unfortunately 1 out of 5 Americans suffer from asthma and seasonal allergy related issues. Of all of the seasons of the year, spring is usually the worst for those who suffer. Your air conditioning and heating system is one of the main sources in keeping your home free of allergens throughout the year.

Most homeowners do not realize this but your indoor air is usually more polluted than outdoor air. Homes are now built with such a sound tightness that once pollutants reach the inside of our home,

they are usually trapped within the home unless properly filtered and removed.

We as Americans spend about 90% of our time indoors therefore we are more susceptible to the triggers of indoor air pollution. There are many options available to add to your existing system that will greatly reduce the amount of harmful allergens and pollutants in the air you breathe inside.

Some of the options available are indoor air filtration systems that will reduce dust, allergens and pollutants by up to 99.9%. There are also Ultra Violet lights systems that can be added to the filtration system that will

reduce air pollutants including smoke, germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew, pollen, dust and dust mites. These are low cost ways to prevent pollutants in your home and can be added to any existing system.

Don’t continue to suffer this season with allergies in your home when there are proven ways to clean your indoor air. Cornerstone Air Conditioning will provide a free indoor air quality inspection to address your concerns with the quality of air you breathe.

Please call 813-949-4445 to schedule your free inspection today. “We look forward to exceeding your expectations.” v

If you’re looking for a mortgage to buy a home or refinance an existing loan, you may see or

hear ads with offers of low rates or payments. Whether you see them on the Internet, on television or in the paper, or whether they come by fax or mail, some of these ads look like they’re from your mortgage company or a government agency. Regardless of where you see the ads, remember that while the offers are tempting, some are terribly flawed: they don’t disclose the true terms of the deal as the law requires.

How do you choose the right mortgage company to handle the most important asset of your life? Choose a company with roots dating back to 1938. JMC Funding

Mortgage Company (subsidiary of Jersey Mortgage Company) has been delivering honest, outstanding mortgage financing for decades. As pioneers in the mortgage industry they are proud to be a part of an elite group of lenders elected to carry the LendRIGHT™ seal of excellence. As part of this group, they represent the top 3% of community lenders in the United States.

Moreover, JMC mortgage professionals have been with the company an average of 15 years or more— extremely uncommon in the mortgage industry today. The long tenure of their staff ensures that they get mortgages approved faster and they get them done right.

year, 15 year, or 20 year fix. With lowered fees, you can now roll the costs into the loan amount with virtually no out of pocket expense. I am committed to taking the time to consider your situation first, helping you find the best loan available….no matter if it’s your first home, your second home, investment home, or refinancing your current loan. Make saving money your priority, today. For more information on our FHA, VA, USDA, or Reverse Mortgage programs, please contact me.

Flora of all kinds is the subject of expressive paint-ings by North Tampa Arts

League artist Arlene Wells, who will showcase her colorful artwork at the New Tampa Regional Library, l000l Cross Creek Blvd., during the month of September.

In her current work, Arlene has been exploring the many pat-terns and colors found in nature, particularly plants and vegetation of all kinds.  And these elements are the real subjects of her paint-ings.  “When I look at anything, I like to break it down into simple shapes and colors,” Arlene says.  This shows me a rather abstracted picture in which I can see patterns and rhythm more easily.  And this gives me another understanding of whatever it is I’m looking at.  This alternative view can be very beautiful and stimulating, and gives the viewer more informa-tion about a subject than a strictly realistic presentation.”

Arlene says that her work has run the gamut from realism to abstraction in an effort to find her own expression and she has landed somewhere in the middle.  “I love color,” she says.  “The knowledge of color, the apprecia-tion of color, the use of color is a big part of my world and work.  “Also, the communication of feel-ing or mood comes before realism.

I also strive for simplicity as I believe it has great impact.”

Arlene has resided in the Tampa Bay area for the past twenty-six years with her husband, and they have raised two sons here.  Although she started out in the field of social sci-ence education, she began painting when she and her family lived in Saudi Arabia.  “There I found myself in a painting class taught by another expat who was an art teacher in “real life” back in the States,” Arlene relates.  “What started out to be an interesting diversion turned into a life-long passion.”

In her five years overseas, she studied painting and drawing and visited galleries across Europe, parts of Asia, and the u.S.  upon returning to the States, she took college courses in fine art, graphic design, and il-lustration.  She taught painting and drawing for the Seminole Commu-nity School and worked with interior designers producing one-of-a-kind hand painted items for their clients.

Today, Arlene is the President of the North Tampa Arts League for the 2012-13 year.  She continues to show in many venues, has won awards for her work, and still teaches on occasion.  To view her artist’s page on the NTAL website, go to northtampaarts.com and click on Artists Gallery. v

If you’re active in the Hillsborough County community, no doubt you’ve been hearing about Big Brothers Big Sisters. The agency, which provides one-to-one volunteer mentors to children facing adversity, has been working hard to increase its impact on the county. Next on the agenda is Big Brothers Big Sisters annual Art of Helping Children Gala on September 15th, sponsored by Earth Tech and the Broadrick Family Foundation. The theme of this year’s event is “Midnight in Paris,” inspired by the Woody Allen movie, and promises attendees the chance to travel back to the elegance and excitement of Paris in the 1920s with a cabaret-style show, French-themed cuisine and an

evening influenced by the fabulous artists of the day. Sponsorships, ticket sales and a silent and live auction will help to bring in funds that the agency will use to serve more children in Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk Counties. The agency is also looking forward to its annual Clays for Kids Fun-raiser, sponsored by Earth Tech and held at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays in Land O’ Lakes. The event will be December 1st and it’s not too early to be a sponsor or form a team! For more information about Big Brothers Big Sisters, or to find out how you can volunteer or support its mentoring programs, please visit www.bbbsfl.org or call 813-769-3600. v

relay For Life new Tampa Seeks Volunteers, Teams The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers and teams for the New Tampa Relay For Life. A Committee Rally will be held on September 4th at Holiday Inn Express & Suites in New Tampa at 6 pm. Anyone interested in being a volunteer on the planning committee or forming a team is encouraged to attend.

A Kick-Off Party for the event will be Tuesday, October 2nd at Hunter’s Green

Country Club at 6 pm. The New Tampa 2013 goal is to rank in the Top 25 Relay Events in Florida and raise $150,000. The 2012 Relay fundraising efforts contributed $115,000.

This year’s New Tampa Relay will be held at Freedom High School in April 2013. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out on an athletic track. The goal is to keep one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay.

Relay celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and provides participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

If you would like to volunteer on the Relay For Life committee, serve as a team captain, or sponsor our event please contact Michelle Rossi [email protected] or visit www.RelayForLife.org/newtampafl.

Re-Unification InformationIn case of an emergency, where we would need to leave the school, we would go to Liberty Middle School located at 17400 Commerce Park Blvd. If we were not able to go to Liberty then our next re-unification site would be the Tampa Palms Country Club located approximately .25 miles from the school on Tampa Palms Blvd. I would contact you via the school district’s Parent-Link phone system and give you a phone message explaining the emergency and stating where you could pick up your child.

Volunteer/Visitor InformationOur volunteers are the heart of our school! The teachers and staff so appreciate our volunteers’ gifts of time. We want to remind all volunteers to make sure that they must complete a volunteer/visitor application. If you don’t have an application on file, please fill one out in the front office. Remember no one may volunteer at school, attend a school event, eat lunch with his/her child, or chaperone a field trip without a “cleared” volunteer/visitor

2013 WOmen OF DISTInCTIOn

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) announces

an open call for nominations for its prestigious Women of Distinc-tion recognition. In addition to the Women of Distinction, the inaugural Woman of Promise Award will be presented to a deserving young woman under the age of 35.

Women do not have to have been Girl Scouts to be nominated. Nomi-nations will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 10th; applications can be downloaded from the council’s website, www.gswcf.org/wod. Honor-ees will be announced in October.

Those selected as honorees are women whose accomplishments make them positive role models who inspire girls to achieve their own goals and dreams. They exemplify the Girl Scout Promise and Law through ethical leadership and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of their fellow citizens through com-munity service.

Those selected as a 2013 Woman of Distinction and the Woman of Promise will be honored at a the 12th annual WOD luncheon Tuesday, March 19th, 2013 at A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa. This event honors women who have achieved success in their chosen fields and who serve as role models for girls and young women and benefits Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. To be considered, Women of Distinc-tion and Woman of Promise nomi-nees must live within Girl Scouts of West Central Florida’s geographic boundaries (Citrus, Hernando, Hill-sborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas,

Polk and Sumter counties); nominees are not required to have been Girl Scouts. The Women of Distinction and Woman of Promise Selection Com-mittee will review the nominations received on or before Sept. 10th and make their selections. TrOOP LeADerS & VOLUnTeerS neeDeD Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is seeking troop lead-ers, both men and women over age 18, to volunteer as positive adult role models for girls. Troop leaders facilitate activities meeting the con-temporary needs of girls, and make a lasting impact by helping build girls of courage, confidence, and character,

who make the world a better place. GSWCF works in close partnership with troop leaders to deliver the information and support needed to help girls unleash their potential. As part of its commitment, GSWCF offers a flexible schedule of in-person and online trainings for all troop leaders, assisting them in developing their skills and learning about the Girl Scout program. In addition to troop leaders, GSWCF is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of other positions. Volunteers are needed to work behind the scenes to support troop leaders, or to train other volunteers. Volunteers are also needed to work directly with girls as event directors or program facilitators at local Girl Scout camps. To learn more about the current volunteer needs in west central Florida, contact Kristie Wiley: (813) 262-1765 or [email protected].
