If you’re an inconsistent ball striker, it probably carries over into your short game, which is frustrating because with such a short swing it should be easy to make solid contact. If you do have trouble with chips, it’s more than likely because you try to lift the ball into the air and end up blading it across the green or laying the sod over it. Solid chips are the result of hitting down into

the back of the ball, not trying to lift it up. Here’s a drill that will produce the kind of chips you dream about on the golf course.

The DrillBalance a club on the top of a water bottle, and place your ball 12” behind the middle of the grip. Make your chip shot without knocking the club off the top of the bottle. You’ll need

to decend into the ball and keep the clubhead low to the ground post impact. If you try to scoop the ball or allow the right hand to take over (causing the clubhead to pass the hands) during this drill, you’ll send the club and the bottle flying.

Karate ClassesThe Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have.

This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

Tennis Tennis Tip of the MonthBy Thomas Judson, Head Tennis Professional

STAY AWAY FROM THE SIDELINES!Almost all tennis matches are won by the player that hits less unforced errors. There are three possible mistakes you can make on the tennis court.

Hitting deep, hitting wide and hitting into the net.

The worst mistake is the shot in the net, which has a lot to do with the importance of depth. The second worst mistake is the shot that goes wide. The mistakes that you need to worry about the least are shots that land deep/long behind the baseline.

The best players realize this and they barely miss in the net or wide!

It takes a lot to miss balls long behind the baseline and if you focus on clearing the net and staying away from the sidelines then you most likely improve your game a lot!

Good Luck. See you on the court!

Thomas JudsonHead Tennis ProfessionalTampa Palms Golf & C.C.813-632-1676

Tampa Palms Jr. Tennis AcademyQUICKSTART TENNISThe USTA has passed new rules governing competition for 10 and under tennis tournaments. The new rules require that 10 and under tennis be played using slower

moving and lower bouncing ball on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter rackets.

10 and Under Tennis is designed around the same concepts as Little League Baseball and other Youth Sports such as soccer and basketball, all of which use equipment and court/field sizes scaled to the size of young children. This allows children to achieve success the first time out, and, sustain that success as they continue to develop their skills. QuickstartThis is a new format for 10 and under children just learning to play Tennis. It is designed to bring kids into the game utilizing a shorter court , smaller rackets, and lighter balls.

2 StarThe player has received previous instruction and is familiar with the basic strokes such as forehand, backhand and volley. The player is in need of developing service, overhead and improving rallying skills. 3 StarPlayer has received previous instruction and is familiar with all strokes. Player has begun to develop strokes to include spins and placement and can maintain a rally beyond 4 shots. This player has begun to formulate some basic playing strategies. Footwork and proper technique is emphasized in this class.

Tournament ToughThis is an invitation only class designed for players dedicated to improving their tennis games in preparation for tournament and or league play. competitive High School tennis players, this brand new (invitation only) class will emphasize the development of those skills necessary to compete at the High School level. Focusing on tennis-specific fitness/hitting drills, shot selection, and situational match strategies will be the priorities in Tampa Palms most intense and highest level class.

The 29th annual “TASTE OF NEW TAMPA” was a huge success! I want to say Special thanks to Primrose School of Tampa Palms for hosting. The owner’s Rick and Jana Radike, truly went out of their way to accommodate the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce. They not only let us use their land, but created a fabulous kids area,

supplied volunteers, pre-sold tons of admission tickets, let us use the truck for set up and break down and so much more! The weather was not perfect, but the event went off with such greatness. The sponsors to put on this event also deserve much recognition:

Over the past three years, this rip-roaring team has raised thousands of dollars to cure cancer. Their wine tasting in March raised $880 of the $3,147 already banked with the American Cancer Society. Quail Hollow Golf Club, Time for Wine, Jersey Mike’s and Hampton Inn stepped up to help. Bay City Bank in Lutz collected $137 in change at teller windows. If you missed that event, come to the Mary Kay Sisterhood tent during the Relay. Buy chances for a Miche bag, Mary Kay skin care basket or an MK Men’s basket. After putting in your miles, get a foot and leg rub with Mary Kay energy cream. The Sisterhood is especially

passionate because two members are cancer survivors. “It’s important for us to be there as sisters supporting each other and our faith. We have really

bonded. The Luminaria Event is really special,” said Donna Moyer, Mary Kay Sisterhood team captain. The team is offering luminaria and

dedications from now through May 1 for a $10 donation. To order a luminaria in honor or in memoriam of a loved one, call Moyer during business hours at 813-333-6668.

Sisterhood and Survivors “This lady is such a beautiful

soul and example for all of us—and she’s a survivor!” That is how Linda Omer of Wellswood describes fellow Mary Kay Sisterhood teammate Dianne Jones. Omer and Jones will both hoof it around the Freedom High School track on May 17-18 during Relay for Life New Tampa. Dianne survived stage-three colon cancer twice. Her doctor calls her his miracle patient. “I’m always so flattered when Linda says I’m an example. No matter when I speak, I believe I’m there because someone needs to hear that message. So many times people tell me thank you because they have colon cancer or because they were afraid of getting a colonoscopy. I’m especially grateful I was able to walk again with Linda last year,” Jones said. Omer, whose mother and aunts had breast cancer, walked her second Relay last year. It was the first year she walked as a breast cancer survivor. “I was walking for everyone else. As I went through treatment, I watched Dianne,” Omer added. She chose to be upbeat, brave and beautiful—continuing her Mary Kay business during her treatment. “I gave out small perfume samples

for a $5 Relay donation at a garage sale this year. You know, I made more for the Relay that I did for the garage sale!” she said.

frills and fun featured at relay Sisterhood Campsite Check out the Mary Kay Sisterhood site first when you arrive at Relay for Life May 17-18 at Freedom High. There you can pick up a fashion-forward crocheted scarf for a $20-50 donation. Macy’s and high-end retailers feature identical versions. These quality scarves are handmade to order for a cause. Curing cancer is Alene Mitchell’s cause. “My father and mother-in-law both had cancer. Last year, I had to go to Moffitt Cancer Center for tests. I was so scared. I sat there and watched all these women with smiles coming and going. Some of them were very ill. I kicked myself. I said they can do it, then I can do it,” Mitchell said. “I got involved in Relay when Donna (Moyer) invited me. Now I raise money for hospice and Relay. I’m even teaching my granddaughters to crochet.” “Knitting for Life is part of our

Mary Kay Sisterhood fundraising effort and we will work on it all year long,” said Mitchell, who lives in The Oaks. One thrilled donor has ordered a baby quilt. Alene is taking orders by phone Monday through Friday during business hours at 813-951-5465.

On Saturday March 23rd the Tampa Palms Womens Club held its annual yard sale at Compton Park. An excellent turn out of vendors, and a break in the weather saw the neighborhood turn out for a leisurely and enjoyable morning of yard saling. With plenty of recycled treasures and baked goods, there was scads to choose from and many of us returned home with new delights. The womens club would like to thank all of our neighbors who turned out for this great event, and hope to see you again next year.
