The village centre of Palmers Green in the late1800’s was the post office, sorting office andgeneral store on the corner of Green Lanesand Hazelwood Lane. A Hazelwood Lane roadsign can be seen on the building just underthe roof in the picture on the cover of thismagazine. The post office moved into theold cottages in the mid 1860’s and stayedthere until 1904 when it moved intoanother shop on The Triangle. The sortingoffice remained in Hazelwood Lane in thecottages until 1907 until it moved to a newsingle storey building opposite Fox Lane (thesite of the current post office).

Further down Hazelwood Lane, behind thepost office was a shop projecting out. Thiswas originally the home of Stern’s, a bakersthat was well known for its cakes. In the late1800’s this shop was taken over by WalterPerrin as a bespoke boot makers andrepairers. The W. W. Perrin sign can be seenin the photos. This shop remained here until1924 when it moved to another building furtherdown Hazelwood Lane. In the photo taken in1924 there is a sign on the roof of this shopadvertising the new houses built by G. W. SIngram that were available for sale inDoveridge Gardens.

Around 1924 all the cottages weredemolished to make way for a new buildingthat would be occupied by the NationalProvincial Bank on the corner ofHazelwood Lane along with a block ofshops leading down to the sorting office on Green Lanes.The bank has since merged with the Westminster Bank to create theNational Westminster Bank and moved further along Green Lanes on thecorner of Lodge Drive. A photo can be seen dated around 1977 when the bankhad since left.

The building was then taken over by The Job Centre which stayed inoccupation until the late 1990’s when they moved to newly built premises onAldermans Hill.

In November 1999, after the shop remained empty for quite a while, it wastaken over by Tony Ourris who refurbished the shop and opened AnthonyWebb Estate Agents in February 2000. Anthony Webb still remain inoccupation.
