Rafflesia Arnoldi is known as the largest flower in the world. It weighs about 7 kilograms (15 pounds). Its petal grows to 0.5 meters long and 2.5 centimeters thick. Rafflesia has no stem, no roots, and no leaves. It is parasitic, meaning in usually lives in another plant. This flower is named after Sir Stamford Raffles who found it in 1818.

Raflesia Arnoldi can only bloom once a year. It blooms only one week before it dies. Raflesia Arnoldi is also called the corpse flower because it has a very bad smell, like rotten meat. This giant flower has five wide orange petals (with white dots) surrounding a cup.

Raflesia Arnoldi can be found in Sumatera Island, especially in Bengkulu. The government in Bengkulu province has been trying hard to conserve this rare flower because its number is getting smaller and smaller. The government is afraid if they do not do anything to protect this flower, it may become extinct. The cause of the decreasing number of Raflesia Arnoldi is mainly human. People cut down forests for housing or farms so the flower no longer has a place to grow.

Ghost

Friday in last week holiday, my father and I went to hotel to have reservation. A receptionist welcomed us friendly. Can I help you ? She asked. I said that I wanted a double room with a bath for one night. Her assistant gave me the key to room number 42. I took the key and upstairs. A porter helped carry my cases.

When we found our room. We unlocked the door and opened it. We were shocked when we show two fat women smoking in the room. We shouted and banged the door. We thought there were ghosts in our room.

We run away and got back to receptionist room. One of the fat women ran after me. She was so angry that we were angry.

Then we explained to the receptionist what happened to us. She was very sorry. She had a mistake. Actually our room was next door, number 41.

We returned to our room and had a rest there. The fat women realized it. We were glad because the look of anger had disappeared from her face. And then we checked out in the following morning.

My Uncle

My Uncle Martin is my mother's elder brother. He is my favourite among my mother's brothers. He is a very interesting man. He lives quite near us with my Aunt Angela and my cousins Anne and Bob. I often go to his house.

He is about 45 with grey hair. He is still quite good-looking. He is tall and well-built. He has blue eyes and a strong face. He wears glasses. He is short sighted. He takes them off when he doesn't work.

Uncle Martin is a textile engineer. He works for a big firm in the city. He travels widely in his job. He is an expert in solving problems with machines. At present, he is in the United States. He is visiting the firm's customers there.

He is very fond of the sea. He has a boat at seaside. He goes there every weekend in summer to sail it. I sometimes stay with my cousins at their house on the coast. When Uncle Martin is at home, he usually takes us out in the boat.

A TOUCH OF GOLD

King Widas was a very wealthy king. His hobby was collecting gold. From the time he got up in the morning to the time he went to bed, he would count his gold.

One morning, as he was sitting alone in the garden, Dionysus, the God of wine, came to him and said, Midas, I grant you a touch of gold. Whatever you touch, it will turn into gold. Be careful. What you think will bring you the most happiness might cause you the greatest grief.

Midas was very happy. He didnt heed Dionysus warning. He touched a tree, and it turned to gold. He touched his palace and it turned into gold. When he touched his beloved daughter, she turned to gold. He was extremely unhappy.

Finally, Midas went back to Dionysus and said, Please take back your gift. I no longer want the golden touch. I realize that wealth does not always bring happiness.
