• The UH ASCE Student Chapter competed inthe ASCE Pacific Southwest Conference(PSWC) at California Polytechnic University SanLuis Obispo. The team placed 7th overall in theconference of 18 schools. The Concrete Canoeteam placed 4th overall, and 2nd in race eventpoints with 2nd in all races including Men’ssprints, Women’s sprints, Coed sprints, Men’sslalom, and Women’s slalom. The Sustainabilityevent team placed 2nd, the TransportationDesign event team placed 4th, the Surveyingevent team placed 6th, the Design BuildConstruction team placed 7th, theEnvironmental event team placed 7th, andJoshua Agpaoa placed 9th in the TechnicalPaper competition.

In May…• An award-winning autonomous hydroponicgrowing system called “Box Farm” -- designedand built by engineering students at the Collegeof Engineering -- was successfully tested at theNASA-funded Inflatable Lunar-Mars Habitat atthe University of North Dakota. The teamconsisted of students Sean Agpaoa, GaborPaczolay, James Thesken, Preston Tran, andfaculty adviser Professor Trevor Sorensen. In June…• College of Engineering students GraceHayashi, Jaymark Ganibi, Justin Pagtolingan,Amanda Achiu, Eliesse Hihara, Benjamin Liang,and Keola Wong competed in the AUVSI(Association for Unmanned Vehicle SystemsInternational) Student Unmanned AerialSystems Competition at Patuxent River NavalAir Station, Maryland, where they placed 19thout of 68 teams.• Team Hōkūlele (UH College of Engineeringstudents Jason Borgida, Efren Enriquez, NhueLac, Branden Lucas, Adam James Macalalag,Matthew Nakamura, Eric Takahashi, KobeTaylor, and Leah Toma) successfully launchedand recovered the 11.5-foot rocket andpayloads they built for the Spaceport AmericaCup Competition hosted by the ExperimentalSounding Rocket Association in Las Cruces,New Mexico.• A team of 10 UH College of Engineeringstudents took a Formula One car they designedand built to Lincoln, Nebraska to competeagainst 80 teams from the United States,
Canada, Mexico, India and Brazil in the annualInternational Formula SAE (Society ofAutomotive Engineers) Collegiate DesignCompetition. They placed 40th out of 77 teams
COLLEGE-WIDEAll of the college’s graduate programs were
ranked in the most recent U.S. News and WorldReport rankings. Civil engineering ranked 76out of 152 in the nation, the electricalengineering department was 97 out of 186schools, and mechanical engineering came inat 135 out of 181. Last fall, the college brokeinto the Best Undergraduate EngineeringPrograms category at number 146 for the firsttime since 2012.
The college launched some new degreeprograms. The College of Engineering is nowoffering a Bachelor of Science in EngineeringScience (BSES) with initial concentrations ineither Aerospace Engineering or BiomedicalEngineering. This new degree is intended toincrease the options for our students, providingan interdisciplinary education and a mechanismto cover emerging areas. Meanwhile, theDepartment of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering is offering a new Bachelor ofScience in Construction Engineering (CNST)with dedicated emphasis in the constructionfield of civil engineering.
To help students and industry partners findeach other, the college has created a jobsboard for employers to post job opportunities -- internship or full-time. It can be found atwww.eng.hawaii.edu/jobs.
