2018 ADVENT PREPARATION
Sunday, December 2, begins Advent and new liturgical year in
the Church. It is also a time to be quiet, to reflect and to
prepare. This time of year can become a frenzy, and it’s easy to
lose our way. Below are some ways to prepare our hearts to
welcome Christ this Advent at Emmanuel!
Advent Giving Tree and Soup Supper—Sunday, December 2
in the morning you can pick up a gift request ornament tag. Or
come to the 5:30 p.m. service, which is a smaller, quieter
service then, stay for soup and grab an ornament.
Men’s Bible Study— as we begin Advent, all men are urged to
attend and begin a personal journey of preparation. This group
meets over coffee and breakfast every Thursday at 7:00 a.m. at
St. Louis Bread Co in Old Webster, or just come at 7:30 for the
half-hour discussion. Then you’ll be on your way with all sorts
of ideas! No registration, no commitment, no pressure. For
questions, call (or text!) Davis Allen at 314-374-0075. Or just
come any Thursday morning!
Advent Class—Thursday evenings starting November 28 and
going through December 20 meet at 6:00 p.m. Using the book
Preparing for Christmas by Richard Rohr, The Rev. Jenny Hu-
len will explore ways to reflect on how the readings help go
deeper spiritually during this season of waiting and preparation.
Please sign up online or call the office at 314-961-2393 to
register. If you are unable to attend the class, you may still
want to get the book!
Advent Wreath Lighting—At the 9:00 a.m. service during
each of the four Sundays of Advent we will light the Advent
Wreath before beginning the worship service. Each week we
will do that after the processional hymn. If you, your family or
you and a friend would like to participate in lighting the wreath,
please let the office know by calling 314-961-2393 or email [email protected].

Continued from page 1
Singing the Psalm—also at the 9:00 a.m. service during Advent, we will be singing the
Psalm each week. See page 4 for more detail. Singing the psalm is done frequently during
Advent, as are Lesson and Carol services. It is a time to prepare, but also a time to rejoice
with our voices!
Advent III—Sunday, December 16 we will change to two morning services (8 & 10
a.m.). At the 10 a.m. service our children, readers and adult choir will lead us reading and
singing as we do Lessons and Carols in the context of the Holy Eucharist. After that
service everyone is invited to join us for Miss Carol’s Brunch in the dining room. See
page 7. Also on December 16 we will offer a Blue Christmas service. See page 3.
Advent Calendars—you know about them as being for kids, right? Or maybe you know
about the ones for kids at Trader Joe’s or the adult Wine one’s at Aldi’s (all sold out!).
But, do you know about the ones at Emmanuel? Slow down. Quiet. It’s Advent….not the
typical message this time of year. Wait! Yes, it is. These Advent Calendars are in the
dining room and in the narthex. These calendars can be colored in, or you can simply
read alone or with your family. Some examples are: Friday, December 7—-”Today, be of
service to someone in need. See Christ in that person. Maybe that’s what it means to wait
for the Lord.” Tuesday, December 18—”Does silence make you uneasy? Sit with it.
Settle into it. You may find you’re more balanced and centered. You may find your
prayer runs deeper!
We hope you all take time to prepare during Advent this year!
Put this on your calendar
NOW!! Senior High Youth
Group will once again, ply us
with pancakes BEFORE you
make a New Year’s resolution!
Sunday, December 30
between the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
services come eat some stacks! This is a fundraiser for Senior High, and one we enjoy as
much as they do! There is not set cost, it’s all a donation!! Senior High will use proceeds
to help fund their Mission Trip in June 2019.
BEWARE! WATCH OUT! TAKE HEED! WARNING!
We’re changing the worship schedule on you soon! Sunday, December 16, 23 and 30 we will have TWO
morning services, 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. We will resume three morning services on Sunday, January 6,
December 2018 Angelus Page 3 Vol. 53 No. 04— November 28, 2018
DECEMBER In-Gathering We will collect gifts that will benefit
Episcopal City Mission
Nurses for Newborns
Webster-Rock Hill Ministries Holiday Baskets
Venture into the dining room Sunday, December 2 to pick
up a gift request ornament from the Giving Tree. On the
back of each ornament is a suggested gift. Please deliver the unwrapped gift, with the ornament
tag attached, and place under the tree. Gift cards are to be deposited into the mail box that is also
under the tree! Please return all gifts by Friday, December 14. The agencies need time to pick up
and assemble before donating at their various holiday events. Thank you!
GIVING TREE ALSO MEANS ADVENT SOUP SUPPER
Sunday, December 2 at 6:30 p.m. Yes, last week we told you there would not be a soup supper, we didn’t have chefs lined up. But,
never fear, Pam Penrose and Rudy Walz stepped up to cook. The menu will be:
Cheesy potato soup
Chili
Chicken noodle soup
French bread, homemade cornbread
Brownies for dessert!
We ask that you please bring fresh fruit to share! Jr. High Youths will setup and serve the meal as
part of their service hours required for the Mission trip next summer. Come share a meal and pick
up a gift request
Blue Christmas Service
For those experiencing grief, loss or hardship, the Christmas season is far from the
most wonderful time of the year. Typical holiday festivities—merry carol singing,
decorating, gathering with family and purchasing gifts—emphasize joy and cheer,
leaving little room for pain and grief.
In response, some churches offer special services leading up to Christmas that
accommodate those for whom the season is trying and difficult. These services,
called Blue Christmas or Longest Night services, emphasize the pain of loss felt by
many at this time of year, and offer a somber, gentle space to gather. Symbolically,
many of these services are held on or around December 21, the date of the winter
solstice, the longest night of the year.
Emmanuel will offer a Blue Christmas service on Advent III, Sunday, December 23 at the 5:30 p.m.
service. This service is open to anyone, feel free to share with your friends and family.

teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, or neighbor gifts! Hurry, they run out fast!!
Singing the Psalm during Advent
When we sing the Psalm during Advent, we will be using a
Simplified Anglican Chant setting (S-411 if you happen to have a
hymnal at home.) “Simplified” meaning that the number of chord
changes is reduced and the music required to get through the text is
shorter. There are no complex syllable decisions to make, there are
only 8 total chords in the entire chant. It’s notated in four parts and
was intended to be sung that way. But, like a hymn, it is just fine to
sing the melody (the top-most pitch.) The text is supposed to be sung
in the same rhythm as you would read it together. This is a tall order
and should be thought of as an eventual goal; often as one gets used to doing this the syllables might go a
bit slower than in conversational speech. But ideally there should be no artificial slowing-down or
stretching of syllables near or at the changing note.
One of the most common remarks of guests who attend Emmanuel (guest organists included) has been that
the congregation “really sings.” So we felt that singing the Psalm was an expectation well within the realm

Advent Wreath Lighting
At the 9:00 am services on December 2, 9, and
at the 10:00 am services on December 16 & 23
We will light the Advent Wreath at the beginning of the service, after the
processional hymn. Each week a different group of people will read a short
prayer and we will sing one verse of O Come Emmanuel.
Arrive on time, come into the warm, cozy nave to help us welcome Advent!

For the month of December the food center is asking for contributions of Bottled or Canned Spaghetti
Sauce to maintain our shelf stock. Please consider a donation to assist those of our community in
need.
Just drop them in the food basket as you enter the front doors in the narthex Sunday morning or place
them in the food basket outside the Food Center on the pew under the parish bulletin board.
Many thanks to the following individuals for their generous gifts to the Food Center in November.
Dorothea Bean Mary Orlando
Peter Bogetto Chuck McClary

Come help make Christmas a reminder of God's lavish, unconditional, limitless and abundant love for the children in detention during the holidays. 9th ANNUAL MISS CAROL’S BRUNCH
FOR THE HOMELESS
Following the 10:00 a.m. service Sunday, December 16
Carol Bledsoe was one of a kind. She was the friendly face at church on Sunday that always made you feel
welcome. She believed the best in people, and this was evident in her work. Carol was a member of
Emmanuel and also parish administrator at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown St. Louis. Through her
work, Carol constantly saw the many needs of the homeless that sought shelter and help at the Cathedral.
Whether it was buying gloves, finding a resource, or just listening to their stories, she would do her best to
meet their needs. Eventually, Carol convinced a local doughnut shop to donate their day old product, and a
daily breakfast club for the homeless was created. It was called “Club Cathedral.” She soon became known
as “Miss Carol,” a trusted friend of the homeless.
On December 19, 2002, Carol was tragically killed outside f her office by a homeless man she had once
helped. The next year, “Ms. Carol’s Christmas Brunch for the Homeless” was created. Originally, this
brunch was served at the Cathedral for the homeless that Carol cared so deeply for. It was a way to
remember Carol and continue her important mission.
For 6 years, the Emmanuel youth group and members of Christ Church helped at the brunch for the
homeless in honor of Carol. We continue that tradition to honor Carol with our own brunch to raise money
for the Miss Carol homeless breakfast program at the Cathedral that is held every Saturday of the year.

Festival Flower and Music Offering At Christmas, a special opportunity is made available for us at Emmanuel to
offer memorial gifts and gifts of thanksgiving. These gifts enable the Altar
Guild to adorn the church with greenery and poinsettias for the Christmas ser-
vices, and are also used to underwrite the cost of the special music. Festival
Flower & Music Offering envelopes are in the pews, and a letter containing an
envelope is being mailed explaining Festival Flower & Music Offering.
If you wish to donate in thanksgiving for or in memory of, please note name (s) on the envelope.
All names are due into the office by Monday, December 17.

Christ Church CathedralHANGING OF THE GREENS
Sunday, December 23, 2018
The fourth Sunday in Advent, after the 10:00 a.m. service we will
decorate the church for Christmas. This is something organized by
altar guild members, but done by us all! Come hang wreaths, roping
and bows inside and outside. Up high and down low!
We need a few good folks to get on ladders to hang some of the
higher wreaths. The greenery and bows will be in the chapel, labeled
where they go. This is a great activity for families to do….and it’s not
like decorating the tree at home, where all of sudden, you’re alone!
This is a true “village” event and it is worth any time spent doing it!
Anyone can help!
Would you like a different perspective (or seat!) for
worship?
Said another way, would you like to be a Liturgical Participant?
Maybe you’d like to do a scripture reading on Sunday; or
perhaps you would like to read the Sunday intercessions? Or
maybe you would like to usher and greet people on Sundays.
Maybe you interested in being a chalice bearer or Eucharistic
visitor? Are you interested in being a minister of ceremonies?
All of these positions are available to persons who wish to be
more engaged in Sunday worship. And all skills are taught to you by either the liturgical leader or a
member of the clergy. We engage liturgical participants for all Sunday morning worship services and
occasionally for funerals and weddings.
The Episcopal liturgy is special is enhanced by having a variety of people Currently, Emmanuel has over
100 volunteers who provide everything from acolyting to minister of ceremonies. Volunteers are not
limited to adults, school students are encouraged to participate as well. We use a database (with an app!)
for scheduling. Each volunteer has their own profile and can plug in dates you are unavailable and even
swap if your schedule changes. If you are interested, please let the office know by December 19 as we will
have a new liturgical schedule coming out the end of December. Call 314-961-2393 and speak to Mimi or
email [email protected].
