A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar

In today’s gospel Jesus was “praised by all” except at home in Nazareth where the “eye of all were intently on him.” Acceptance can be hard to find at home due to unreal EXPECTATIONS. Jesus challenges us to “proclaim liberty” to anyone “oppressed” or “captive” by our EXPECTATIONS,

Reflection on the Extra Jubilee of Mercy

Especially during this Jubilee of Mercy, we are challenged to examine ways that we can live the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy respond to a person’s experience of lacking resources whether internal (food, drink), external (clothing, shelter) or suffering (disease, imprisonment, death). The Spiritual Works respond to the deficiencies suffered in our spirituality: through instructing (giving counsel and teaching), comforting (during suffering or sadness), imploring the help of God in prayer, or reacting to the disorders of actions (admonishing, forgiving, patiently bearing wrongs). Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle C (January 31, 2016)

Jeremiah starts this reading with God reminding him that, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.” Do we take time to realize how precious we are to God? Do we respect all those whom God has formed in the womb, realizing they are known to Him?

Paul takes all the gifts and blessings from God and dismisses them as dross when compared to Love. Do we take pride in our gifts and blessings without sharing Love?

Those listening to Jesus were amazed at His teaching yet rose up against him because he called a spade a spade. He didn’t pamper them with platitudes and tell them how wonderful they were. He told them work still needed to be done. How do we respond to those who try to guide us forward in God’s ways?
